United vs. Lille Recap
I know it's a bit dated now, but here's a really good recap of the Lille vs. United match from last week. After looking at it again, I'm still convinced that the goal should have been called back but that Lille should be thrown out of the competition for their behavior. I fart in their general direction!

The ref does not need to blow the whistle unless they ask for 10 yards. I would be annoyed if it was scored against United but it was totally fair.
Look at the FIFA rules again, mate. Refs are really sloppy on this point, but it's there in black and white:
"Referee is to raise one arm over his head to indicate a direct free kick and to blow once sharply on his whistle before the kick is taken."
The problem with what you're suggesting is that the only way to prevent this happening to have someone stand over the ball and risk a yellow card.

Nah, I think it should have been a 0-0 draw. The Lille goal was clearly a push on the back of Vidic.
I do hate ManYoo but I can still be reasonably objective when it comes to watching the footage. You can also accuse me of having a defender's perspective, if you like. I just think that it's unfair for some referees to wait until the wall is set and others to let a kick be taken. Where's the consistency?
That said, Lille should be kicked out of the tournament and ManYoo given a bye. In any case, it's a moot point. Whether a 0-0 draw or a one-goal advantage to you lot, ManYoo were always going to win the home leg and go through to the quarter finals. You should pick your battles when it matters.
And I'm not nuts - Robbie Earle is a prawn!
