Champions League - Gameday 3!
It was a great day for the British teams yesterday in the CL. Let's hope for more today as ESPN2 broadcast the Chelski-Shalke, while Liverpool are in Istanbul to play Besiktas and Celtic play in Lisbon in the anniversary year of the "Lisbon Lions" triumph. Should be an excellent day. I'll be around for the afternoon's fun and I'll be looking for your company.

Bit negative from Avram tonight, with just Drogba alone up front.
Chelski are lucky that Kuranyi has been left out of the Shalke side. I'm not a fan but you have to admit that Kuranyi does rattle them in for his side.
The Shalke fans are making some great noise, far out-singing the Chelski Blues. You have to imagine that they're some Octoberfest fans, eh?
Apparently Chelski dropped the ticket prices to £25 for tonight's match and they've been rewarded with a sell-out.
Oh dear oh dear, the Shalke keeper's had a shocker there. One for the blooper reels but Chelski are one-up in the first five minutes through a shot from Malouda that's gone right through the keeper's legs.
1-0!
Quite a few early goals flying in here this afternoon. Raul has stuck one in for Real Madrid in the second minute against Shahktar. And Gilardino has put AC Milan in front in the sixth minute against Olympiakos.
Shalke are getting more into the game since that clanger by their keeper.
Olympiakos have pegged back Milan. It's 1-1 there.
Big shout for a penalty there from the Shalke fans. I'd have to see it again. Looked to me to be 50/50; two players tangled up in each other.
Uh oh, Liverpool have fallen behind in Turkey. Ozcan with the goal for Besiktas in the 13th minute.
And Gilardino has popped a second goal in against Shahktar.
Still 1-1 between Real and Olympiakos.
Shalke are really giving this a go. You'd think that Chelski were the away side, pinching an early goal and sitting back on their heels.
Apparently Shalke have a kid named Jermaine Jones, who's got U.S. Army parentage. Bradley should cap him post haste.
Shalke have the ball in the back of the net, but it's been ruled offside.
Essien playing in the center forward channel puts a delicate header on target but the Shalke keeper is equal to it. He's redeemed himself now.
Werder have taken the lead against the odious fascists of Lazio.
The Besiktas goal sounds like a real Keystone Kops affair, with the final shot deflected off Hyppia into the net. That's two own goals in two matches for poor Sami.
Half-time: Chelski 1 Schalke 0. Apart from that moment of madness from Manuel Noya, Chelski could really be in trouble here.
And Liverpool are really under the cosh. After a difficult start to the CL campaign, they need a win tonight and after trailing at half time.
Hey Bob, I am here for a little while. I have to go to Thomas' last game of the season.
What is with this lot all struggling. The other three from yesterday are steamrolling.
What a comical goal against Costa del Pool
What's the deal with Bolton and Megson?
First, Milan fires Martin Allen because he wants Megson. Now Megson quits because Bolton want him. What's the big deal with Megson? What has he done? Brought up West Brom and that's it!!!
Heya, Dave. You're just here to see Drogs stick in the killer blow against Schalke. Good for Chelski.
Yes, comical indeed from Pool. It has officially been changed to a Sami Hyppia own goal.
Yup, and now I have to go.
Talk to you Saturday.
ooh, Real are losing 2-1 and Besiktas' goal has been awarded to Hypia. His second OG in two games.
Cheers.
I don't get the love for Gary Megson either. He strikes me as an old-style relegation dogfight scrapper who likes to chew gum vigorously and yell at the fourth officials. I don't get it.
Cheers, Dave. I'll be in Cleveland over the weekend, but I'll check in from time to time on the matches and the blog activity.
Julio Cesar has added a second for Olympiakos against Real, so the Spanish champions are really up against it at home.
Shahktar have pulled one back against Milan. It's 2-1 there now.
Very lucky thing there for Chelski. Great cross over, Laurson gets his head to it, it's rockets off the post and nestles into Cech's grateful hands.
Werder Bremen have added another goal against the Lazio Nazis.
Another shock score coming in here. Rosenberg are two in front of Valencia, who are in real trouble if they lose again tonight.
Robinho has leveled it for Real against Olympiakos. Can they find a winner now?
Seedorf has put two quick goals in for Milan and now it's a comprehensive hammering of Shahktar on the cards at 4-1.
Marseilles have taken the lead against Porto. It's 1-0.
Celtic still drawing 0-0 in Portugal, which would be as good a result as that Rangers draw with Barca last night.
Kalou coming on here, no doubt to give Drogs a breather.
And the officials have completely missed a blatant foul on the edge of the box by Alex, which certainly should have been a red card. Nothing given.
Now Drogs wants a penalty and gets nothing. I reckon the referee evened things up there.
Bobo has added a goal for Besiktas and it's curtains for Liverpool tonight and perhaps for their CL campaign. How long can Rafa last with these kinds of performances?
Benfica have broken Glaswegian hearts tonight with an 87th minute goal.
And Robinho has won it for Real. It's 3-2 and surely they can see this one home now.
Lazio's SS Brigade have got a goal back but surely it's too late for them.
Liverpool mounting a mighty comeback challenge in Istanbul now, with Stevie G. knocking in an 85th minute goal. Can Captain Fantastic carry them on his back?
Final scores coming through now:
Chelski have been flattered by a 2-0 scoreline. Schalke were actually quite good and deserved better.
Real have won 4-2.
Liverpool have gone down 2-1 against Besiktas. Bad result for the Reds.
And Celtic have lost 1-0 in Portugal.
So, not a good night for the Brits.
You really thought Shalke were worth a point against Chelsea?
First of all, I think the keeper was horrible. Dozy on both Chelsea goals.
Rafinha had exactly one good moment in the match when he stopped Kalou dead on the wing. But Malouda murdered him.
Drogba keyed on the center back that wasn't Bordon, and made him look very uneasy. If Chelsea were more interested in going forward with Drogs instead of letting him forage by himself up front, IN THE HOME LEG, NO LESS, they could have had two or three more. Should have, Essian's missed header, that ball that Drogba dummied wide and then crossed back for Frank Lampard to waste, and a dead cert penalty.
I thought Shalke were useless. I counted three free kicks meant as crosses that Cech collected unmolested. Larsen was anonymous apart from his header that bounced off the post into Cech's arms. And Assamoah, jezus, he's busy to no particular purpose at all. Raketic made a bit of difference when he came on, but still hit worm burning corners that troubled no one. Tommy Smyth liked the cut of Grossmuller's gib, but really, apart from that nice take and disallowed goal for offside, can you remember anything else.
Nah, I've seen Shalke with Kuranyi in the Bundesliga and they can play much, much better. They were pap tonight and that's why Chelsea playing as negatively as they do, beat them soundly.
I just saw the Liverpool highlights. Doesn't that just look like Rafa's lost the team?
For both Turkish goals, did you see any Liverpool player trying to put a boot in front of the ball? Apart from Hypia with his second own goal in as many games?
I'm not sure that Gerrard's form isn't down to an unhealed broken toe, but to me it also looks like the players are fed up with Rafa. And it couldn't happen at a better time than when a certain North London club are packing their boots in bags and heading their way on Sunday!
Shame for Celtic. 90+ minutes of backs to the wall before conceding. That's a gutbuster what with 'Gers escaping with a 0-0 draw with Barca.
No, I didn't think Schalke were good enough to earn a point, but I thought 1-0 or 2-1 might have been a fairer result. They did have a reasonable penalty shout and that header that went off the post and straight into Cech's hands. In terms of Chelski, I thought that they were a bit flat given that they were at home. Without that almighty fluff of Malouda's innocuous shot, they might have gone in at half-time 0-0 and then might even have struggled to break the deadlock after half-time.
I agree that Rafa's lost the team, apart from perhaps Stevie G. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't get sacked fairly soon, but Martin Jol will go first. I'm in the middle of watching Spurs struggling to knock off Getafe in the UEFA Cup. They could easily be out of the UEFA, Carling Cup and in the relegation zone in a couple of weeks. Jol will go.
By the way, really hard supporting either Chelski or Shalke, eh? One, the plaything of a Russian gangster, the other sponsored by Gasprom? Strewth, what a choice.
