Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Footie Trivia Question of the Week

The Champions League is back this week, so here's one to whet the appetite:

"There have been nine American internationals who have played in the Champions League to date. Name the Yanks and the teams that they played for."

Good luck, lads!

That's one, mate. And actually DaMarcus is the only Yank to ever score for two different Champions League sides.

Any others?

Did Jonathan Spector play for United? I think he did

What about the keepers? Tim Howard for ManUSA, Brad Friedel for Liverpool . . .

Good ones Sir Trev.
I was thinking about Brad but completely forgot about Tim?
Trev is correct with Tim, how about Brad?

Jovan Kirovski for Bayer Leverkeusen, and I bet Landycakes as well, in a qualifying round.

Maybe Freddy Adu for Benfica this year?

Guessing that O'Brien guy for Ajax?

Barring an injury between now and Wednesday, Jermaine Jones for Shalke though he might not be capped for the USA yet.

Kirovski might have been with Dortmund. Can't remember, but I'm pretty sure that he was the first Yank to score in the CL. Dortmund, Leverkeusen, one of them.

What about Earnie Stewart with PSV?

Benny Feilhaber with Hamburg? In the squad for sure, but not sure about an appearance in the CL.

All great guesses, lads. Thanks for playing. Let's start with the keepers. The only one who has played in the CL is Timmy Howard for United. Friedel never appeared for Liverpool.

Kirovski appeared for Dortmund in the 96/97 CL campaign.

Donovan made one appearance for Leverkusen, a performance recently described on the Guardian podcast as the worst in CL history.

John O'Brien made several appearances for Ajax in the CL between 1999 and 2005.

Benni Feilhaber made several appearances for Hamburg in 05-06.

Unfortunately, Earnie Stewart never quite made the big time in Holland. Most of his time was with Willem II in the 90s. If he were still around today, he'd almost certainly be at a better club.

And Freddy hasn't made his debut in the CL for Benfica. In fact, I've heard that he's already a bit unsettled by not getting a starting spot at the club. I hope that he can get stuck in and earn his place.

So, we've got:

1. Beasley
2. Donovan
3. Feilhaber
4. Howard
5. Kirovski
6. O'Brien
7. Spector

Still two that you haven't got yet. Keep on keeping on.

Bob,

I was pretty sure about my Freddy guess, so I checked.

On 14 August 2007 Adu made his debut with Benfica against FC Copenhagen in a UEFA Champions League match, coming into the game in the 37th minute as a substitute.

Obviously because he's a United old boy, (in more ways than one, IMHO) the event was ballyhooed in the WPost.

My bad. Then there are ten Yanks who'd played in the CL. Still two to go.

Excellent joke at Landycakes' expense on yesterday's WSD:

Did you hear that Landon Donovan's favorite band is Radiohead?

Yeah, his favorite tune is "How to Disappear Completely!"

Quality stuff.

Yeah, just finished watching the Chelsea Shalke match and that Jones guy didn't look very clever at all. He's supposed to be a destroying midfielder and he wasn't having that effect at all. The Germans can have him.

Reyna for Rangers, and Frankie Heyjuk for Leverkeusen.

It was driving me mad so I looked them up.

Right you are. Now get stuck into this week's puzzler.

Thanks for playing.
