Scolari Sacked!
I was just about to put on a token thread about the Millwall-Leeds match when I noticed that Big Phil Scolari has been sensationally sacked at Chelski this afternoon!
That follows the sacking of Big Tony Adams at Pompey over the weekend; by my count, that's six Premiership managers sacked this season, with Gareth Southgate and Sparky Hughes sure to follow. A record?
Oh, and I will be monitoring the Leeds boys this afternoon if you can be bothered.
106 Comments:
Here's the Leeds side for tonight's match:
1. Casper Ankergren
22. Andy Hughes
5. Rui Marques
36. Richard Naylor
38. Carl Dickinson
18. Andy Robinson
4. Jonathan Douglas
15. Fabian Delph
23. Robert Snodgrass
35. Lee Trundle
9. Jermaine Beckford
And we're off!
This is the third time I've seen the Whites this season. I saw their fourth round Carling Cup loss and a 0-0 draw in the first round of the FA Cup. Let's hope for better tonight.
It's all a bit ping pongy so far.
First chance whipped in by Andy Robinson and Lee Trundle wasn't far away.
Oh, Richard Naylor rippled the outside of the net from the resulting corner. Good stuff from us in the first five minutes.
First chance for Millwall here. The free kick came in and bounced worryingly through the box to Ankergren.
Oh, Beckford was surprised that he wasn't flagged offside and couldn't readjust and shoot.
It's settled into a real cut and thrust end to end encounter. Neither defenses are inspiring confidence.
Beckford is the first player since Peter Lorimer back in the 70s to pass the 21 goal mark at this stage of the season. Terrific strike record, particularly given his injuries.
Rui Marques is going to go into the book for a cynical foul. The Millwall lads are going barmy claiming that he was the last man back. Ridiculous.
I was listening to BBC Radio 1 this morning . . . The morning DJ, Chris Moyles, is a Leeds United fan . . . he's not my favorite DJ, but he had a good bit about how the Leeds and Millwall fans can't be bothered to get into a punch up given how bad it is to be in League One. . .
And now Richard Naylor has gone into the book. Our backfour is starting to creak a bit here. Millwall's David Martin is really causing some problems out wide. One was just scrambled off the line just then.
That is troublesome. If they can't bother to have a ruck in the pub before the match, what point is there? Sad times for the Elland Road boys.
Any thoughts about the Premiership management merry-go-round, Trev?
Half an hour gone and still no breakthrough here at Elland Road.
After finishing Bloody Confused, I was wondering what the Big Blue Bear thought of the Adams sacking. It's all about expectations, if you are expected to take home trophies and you don't then your head is on the chopping block. For West Ham, as long as we don't go down, we've done well.
YESSSS!!!!!
Beckford with an absolute cracker there. He received the ball out wide right, cut inside and then curled it into the top corner. That's some finish.
1-0 Leeds!
GO ON, YOU WHITES! GET ANOTHER!
That's a good point. That book was written during a purple patch for Pompey when they had Benjani, Sulley Muntari and so on. A really exciting team. Unfortunately, Pompey will always be a selling side. With Adams out, though, they should be able to buy a relegation dogfight expert out there who should guide them to safety. I think there are plenty of more rubbishy sides in the Prem this season.
Speaking of books, do you fancy trying to pick another one to read maybe over the summer months? I would suspect that Betsy is up for it. And you know me...
The other day I was watching some random youtube vids of West Ham fans destroying a couple of Millwall pubs. Ridiculous.
That 22nd goal for Beckford's got us within two points of Millwall in 7th.
That's got to be one of the most vicious street firm matchups around.
My resolution this year was to read 52 books so I'm happy to commit to a book club read. I'm in the middle of Team of Rivals right now. It's massive.
Beckford has another chance there but he slices this effort.
Yeah, stay away from Doris if you want to plow through that number. She's a wee bit long-winded. I'm getting through some of my brother's picks right now and on to David Sanger's book "The Inheritance" next.
I'm counting the chapter books I read together with Cal. We've done Charlotte's Web this year and are now on to The Tale of Desperaux. I'd like for us to pick a quality piece of new fiction.
Half-time: Simon Grayson will be delighted to see his side go in 1-0 up in this qualification six pointer.
Let's have more in the second half, eh?
Hey Bob and John
Sorry about yesterday John
Keep it going Bob
As for Scolari, Chelsea must want Tony Adams!! They made their move right when he became available!
Sounds good. I'm definitely up for that and I'm sure that Betsy and the Gooner will be too. Dave - maybe not. Who knows - maybe we can pull JDLC into the LOB web?
Just turned on the Leeds liink on Atdhe.
Nice and clear. Is it Sky coverage? I am listening to Five Live's Monday Night Club
Yeah, good one, Dave. Lumper's going to need to drop into the lower divisions to learn his craft, I suspect. I hear that Chelski are considering having Avram Grant back!
Congrats on your win yesterday, Dave. Our Manager has said the title is yours.
Yeah, it does seem to be Sky coverage, although it's strictly the B-team for commentary.
Just reading your comments
I have read Team of Rivals.
I enjoyed it
I just finished reading Presidential Courage by Michael Beschloss. Another interesting read.
Michael Bridges in the commentary booth. I'm surprised that he got into Elland Road unscathed!
Maybe I'm selling math teachers short, Dave. Are you up for reading a good novel this summer?
Nice goal by Beckford!!
Where are all the fans?
A couple of my friends and I have decided to read. They normally read but they knew I didn't.
We first decided to read Team of Rivals. We read one or two chapters a week and we talked about it at our breakfast. We usually meet at a diner once a week before school.
We then watched HBO's Adams and PBS's Civil War
As I said, we just finished reading Presidential Courage.
The book talks about Washington, Adams, Jackson, Lincoln, TR, FDR, Truman, JFK and Reagan. Some of them are not always shown in the best light
Italy vs. Brazil friendly tomorrow afternoon live on FSC.
That sounds like fun, apart from the early morning sessions. Before school? You must be up with the chickens!
We meet at 7 and I have to leave for my school by 7:50. We meet 2 minutes away from my school. I just show up at the bell that day!
Second half underway
Second half starting...
Come on, you Whites!
Really? I don't remember Simon Grayson playing for us. Must have been during the 80s when I couldn't follow the lads as closely.
Andy Robinson has been in the wars all afternoon. The Millwall lads are really putting the boot in.
You said it was the B team of commentators.
It is Alan Parry.
He is big time
Trundle went for a cheeky little chip over the keeper. Nice idea, but it didn't come off.
Yeah, I was talking about the geezers in the studio. Somebody I've never seen before and Michael "bloody" Bridges.
I had to slog through the early years, but once we got Honest Abe into the White House and the blood starting spilling the reading pace has quickened dramatically. I want to have breakfast with you at the diner. And then I want you to go off to work, while I get goof off all day.
I've always like Alan Parry. I can't make out the color guy though.
Go on, Trev. Take a walk in a teacher's shoes one of these days. You'd love those kiddies!
You would enjoy watching me have to leave
I'd like to see someone really chop down that David Martin - he's a threat down the wing!
That was a clinical pull back by Douglas
I'm really shocked that we got through another transfer period without losing Beckford and Delph. That should give us the impetus to go for a qualification spot.
A Premiership referee at Eland Road
Douglas clearly trained at the Norman Hunter academy.
Why not - it is a Premiership stadium!
Sixty minutes in and we're looking good for this one. Millwall really haven't threatened as much in the second half.
Five Live just said that Luke Young out of the squad
Yellow card for Beckford. He's a lucky boy there because he clearly elbowed the keeper right in the gob.
Beckford was a naughty boy there! Lucky to still be on the pitch. Could he be in trouble for that through video?
Elland Road does look empty tonight. Must be cold. We've been averaging over 20K per match. Only Leicester have better attendances.
Maybe the fans wanted to keep away from the dreaded Millwall fans
Would Leeds move up if they win?
Five Live just had Dean Windass on, They said hello and he said " This isn't Deano Windass, it is Deano Zoff" Very clever
The Argie comes on.
Doesn't he normally start?
If Carlton Cole can play for England, I can play for England.
If Carlton Cole can play for England, I can play for England.
If Carlton Cole can play for England, I can play for England.
Well, not really, your parents weren't English!
Of course, my mom was born in Portsmouth
Do I need to send my reply THREE times?
15 to go at ER
What????? My Mom was born and raised in Brixton.
Where's Bob buggered off to?
They've got to close down Martin!
Speaking of mums and dads . . . Bob D . . .are you any relation to the Dahlgren featured in the Team of Rivals?
I had a student pop in for a moment. I agree with John - I'd pick him before Carlton Cole for England.
You're right, there was a Dahlgren in that book
No, but it's a common question. That's John A. Dahlgren, who designed the "Dahlgren gun," a sort of prototype howitzer that was used during the Civil War. No relation. It's a fairly common name, to be fair.
Free kick chance for Leeds.
Who is their specialist?
Go on - stick this one in!
Straight at the keeper
Snodgrass. Straight at the keeper. He's the one who usually takes them but not a specialist on that evidence.
Five to go.
Hold on Leeds... for Bob's sake
Millwall get a shot off but saved
Another shot from distance hit just wide
Down to the last five minutes or so now. Looking good. Nice save there from the big Dane.
Never a penalty
Never a penalty there. Bollocks.
No, we wouldn't move up with this win. We'd be on 48 points, two behind Millwall in 6th on 50.
Leeds wasting time now
Corner to to the Lions.
How much of added time?
Lovely corner there. Ta very much.
I hadn't noticed that Becchio had come on. He must have replaced Trundle at some point.
ooh, he should have put it away.
Oh, Beckford should have had his second there. Becchio knocked it down nicely and Jermaine blasted over. Picked up a knock on the follow through too. Not good.
Well done, Leeds get the second goal.
I actually heard it was coming before I saw it. Five Live is ahead of the match
Oh dear, my picture's frozen up with four minutes of extra time to come!
He was definitely on side. Nice decision by the linesman
16th league goal
Yes! It's Beckford again with his 23rd of the season. Lovely jubbly. We're home and dry now. 2-0.
Did you get the picture back before it was scored?
Your lot scored, Bob, start dancing!
Ashley Grimes plays for Millwall. I wonder if he is a son of the Ashley Grimes(the perm boy sub that played for United)
No, but I saw the replay. I'm dancing now. Full-time. Leeds 2-0!
I'm off, nice chatting with you both. I'm heading to West Palm Beach for a Board meeting Wednesday through Saturday. See you on FB, Bob.
I love it. The mascot's getting in on the congratulations as if he'd laid on the second goal.
Game over.
Well done! Two points behind but have played more games
GET PROMOTED, WILL YA?
Take care fellas
Dave
Thanks for the company, lads. I'm off home. Enjoy West Palm, Trev. Talk to you tomorrow, Dave.
