Champions League - Match Day 5
Greetings from northern Virginia. It was a mixed day for the English sides yesterday, with Arsenal going down in Braga while Chelski polished off Zelina to make the knock-out stage. Today, ManYoo go north of the border to face Rangers at Ibrox while Spurs host Werder Bremen fresh from their Emirates heroics at the weekend. Join me from 2:45 EST onward for all the usual LOB fun.

Lots of talking points from yesterday's matches. It's a shame that I missed them while driving.
Was it a stonewall penalty that the referee in Braga missed for the Arse?
Did Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos pick up second yellow cards deliberately to avoid a suspension in the knock-out round?
Happy Thanksgiving Eve
I thought it was a penalty for the Arse
Those were two clinical finishes by Braga though.
Arse still should still have no problem qualifying but probably as runners up.
1850: BREAKING TEAM NEWS
Wayne Rooney starts for Manchester United
There is no Rafael van der Vaart (ankle) in the Tottenham , but Gareth Bale (shoulder) is fit to start against Werder Bremen.

I am thinking we are going to have TURKEY!!
Not much happening. Just Kathy's dad coming over. All our family are 3000 miles away in both directions
Of course, after the Champions League, we have the Ashes beginning tonight. I am looking forward to finding some links to follow it
Just turkey? I'm a big fan of the Thanksgiving side dishes too.
Glad that Kathy's dad is going to be part of the celebration.
What have you guys got planned?
Say hello to DC Dahlgrens and the rest of the DC LOBers
Tottenham: Gomes, Hutton, Gallas, Kaboul, Assou-Ekotto, Lennon, Jenas, Modric, Bale, Pavlyuchenko, Crouch. Subs: Cudicini, Keane, Palacios, Defoe, Bassong, Kranjcar, Corluka.
Ah, the preview show is starting on FSC. Believe it or this is the first Champions League action that I've seen on FSC this season. I'm usually at the office. Lovely jubbly!
We'll have my aunt over. Got the turkey in plus four pies from a local store. I'm doing my famous sweet potato casserole. Stuffing, biscuits, green bean casserole, cranberry, the lot.
I'll turn that on.
I am listening to 5Live at the moment
What did you make of the matches yesterday?
Kazan are 1-0 up and would qualify for the knock-outs with a win at home against Copenhagen today.
Shame we don't have MSG Plus for a second match today.
I am going to look for a Spurs link
I am pleased about United's line up
Both Chelsea and Arsenal didn't look to good
Is Real that good?
Did those guys get sent off on purpose?
Do the yellows carry after the group stages?
Apparently they do
These are tables going into tonight's matches
A
Spurs 7
Inter 7
FC Twente 5
WB 2
B
Lyon 9
Schalke 7
Benfica 6
Hapoel 1
C
Man Utd 10
Valencia 7
Rangers 5
Buraspor 0
D
Barca 8
FC Copehagen 7
Rubin Kazan 6

Why does Rubin qualify with a win?
Here's the Rangers line-up:
Rangers: McGregor, Davis, Whittaker, Broadfoot, Weir, Foster, Naismith, McCulloch, Hutton, Weiss, Miller. Subs: Alexander, Fleck, Beattie, Loy, Perry, Wylde.
Looks like about six at the back and only Kenny Miller up front.
Shame that Rangers weren't ahead of Valencia
Rangers very weak apparently tonight
http://mypremium.tv/
has a link for Spurs
Not sure if it works though
I think that the guys on FSC were saying that about Kazan because Copenhagen have to play Barca in the final match. Yes, mathematically, both sides are still in it.
Good afternoon BD and UWS. I am here to join you for all the action as Manyoo take on Rangers at Ibrox.
Welcome MUR
I saw David Weir warming up for Rangers. He must be pushing 40.
Afternoon, MUR! Hope you're enjoying the holiday week. How's the family - everyone feeling better?
I agree UWS. I have always liked Rangers. In a perfect scenario both teams would have been in first and second. However, my allegiance is always with United.
A lot of chatter on-line about how the sectarian Rangers crowd will react to Chicharito's usual Catholic blessing routine in the center circle before matches. Any thoughts?
Yes BD. Melanie's thumb has healed and she can resume playing musical instruments. Elizabeth is starting to feel better. The doctors think she has acid reflux and is lactose intolerant. With a proper diet and her medication her health will hopefully improve.
Looks like United will be wearing their white shirts. Does Blue clash with Red!
Glad to hear it, mate.
I think the Rangers fans should respect Chicharito's right to practice his beliefs. The Rangers fans need to show tolerance towards others who have different beliefs than themselves.
Thank you BD. How have you been UWS and BD?
How is everything at Gooner Central?
Doing alright, MUR. It was an easy drive down to the DC area yesterday. I had loads of podcasts saved up, including the Guardian Football Weekly, the 606 pods from the weekend, Sunday Supplement from Sky and Alan Davies "It's Up for the Grabs." Marvelous!
Red and blue do not clash. I guess it is more convenient for the ref to have one team wearing dark shirts and one team wearing light shirts.
I'm expecting Gooner to step in the door at any moment. He had a half-day at work this morning. I brought a 12 pack of pale ales from a Western NY brewery down, so we'll be tucking in shortly.
It will be a homecoming for SAF as he is a Glaswegian and a former Rangers player. He must be looking forward to this.
I disagree with Warren. It's always a "Nani-game."
I would love to have some pale ales. My wife bought me some Heineken's .How appropriate. They sponsor the CL. I should have one to honor that.
Rubin Kazan have ended at 1-0 over Copenhagen. So, that group is now:
Rubin Kazan - 9 pts
Barca - 8 pts
Copenhagen 7 pts
Pana 2 pts
Wouldn't it be great if Barca got knocked out!!
It would UWS. Unfortunately, I don't see them losing to lowly Panathanaikos. It would be great though .
Luv it!
Drac looks cold. He's got the silly hat on.
This Spurs is working
http://www.justin.tv/caughtoffsidefootball#/w/583620144/2
Well it is it Sky Sports News... not sure if it will go to the match
If it is just Soccer Special I will keep it going
I'll be back in a tick
Have to to take the boys somewhere
Anon via text: "Just showed the Bremen line-up to some Germans on the train to Tottenham... White flag, was their response. They aren't happy."
I would love to see Inter knocked out of the CL. I wonder what would happen to arrogant Benitez.
The teams are out of the tunnel as the CL anthem is played.
United and Rangers coming out of the tunnel and greeting each other.
The match kicks off at Ibrox as former Celtic player Davie Provan is one of the announcers.
Off we go then - best of luck to United!
That could have been an early penalty as Steven Davis appeared to foul Drac.
Oh - that must be a pen! No, the ref doesn't want to know. I think that was dead on for Drac.
United are really going after Rangers from the off.
The fans jeer Roon as he dribbles out of defense then cheer as he misplaces a pass.
Good movement here from United. Rafael dinks a cross in and Drac heads to the keeper.
Fabio showed great skill on the left wing then crossed for Drac to head straight at the keeper.
Not sure why the Ibrox faithful are booing Roon. The boy can't get a break.
Nani was caught by Weiss' arm. It seemed unintentional.
I am back
Spurs have scored!
I did notice that. He sure is unpopular north of the border.
Welcome back UWS.
United wearing red... good
Yes - Kabboul, the hero from Saturday, has hit the opener.
How have United started?
ROONEY JUST CONTROLLED THE BALL AND PASSED IT TO A TEAMMATE!
They've got to get my boy Roon into the match more.
Of course, it was in the center circle
United have been on the attack. We thought they should have had a penalty in the third minute when Drac was fouled in the box.
I think United have been useful, but Rangers are playing five at the back and two defensive middies.
Glad to see United with an attacking line up
Rubin have taken the lead against Copenhagen. They are now tied for first place in their group with Barca.
Spurs could win the group which would make Inter runners up in the group. That would be a tough draw for a group winner. The other Milan team could be another!
David Weir concedes a corner.
Corner to United, played short just to spite UWS.
Schalke take the lead against Lyon
Weir concedes another corner. The corner is easily caught by McGregor.
Glad to see Giggsy back
That was dangerous from Rangers. I thought I heard a whistle... I guess not
Get a hat-trick Wayne
Oh - Miller came close there with the header after the knock-down. That's where Rangers are most dangerous.
Rangers had their first chance as Kenny Miller headed wide.
Get in the box Wayne!! He was in the left midfield position!
Gooner says: Rangers nearly missed out on a Wolves Kenny Miller special there.
Roon clueless on the left wing... can't dribble...sigh... he hasn't changed!
Gers fans having a right old sing-song in the cold in Ibrox.
Now Roon is on the left wing and easily tackled. Why is he playing out of position?
Bloody Kenny Miller... reminds me of the reunion in '04
Valencia are winning
Valencia have taken the lead against Bursaspor. That makes Group D very interesting.
Jenas already coming off injured...never liked him
If Rangers lose then they look like finishing in a Europa League spot.
Shalke are leading 1-0 against Lyon.
Nocito Sportscenter already announced that
It is now 2-0
Even a draw now won't help Rangers. I wonder if Ally will change the formation in the second half.
What on earth is Roon doing out wide left?
Berbatov starting to sulk at his teamates
Roon playing left wing!
I agree BD. I was thinking the same thing.
Valencia are two up
BRING ON CHICHARITO!!!
Oh dear, my boy Nani with a real chance after Whittaker's poor clearance.
Nani with a whiff at the top of the box
Rangers have to win to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages.
Roon with a swing and miss as well
Roon with a big whiff on that cross. At least he's in at the deep end.
Drac is playing on the right wing and Roon on the left wing. Who is the striker?
Weak shot by Roon... what has happened to him!
This is becoming more than a blip
Roon shoots and it is deflected off of Broadfoot for a corner.
Haopel beating Benfica
O.G. is running down the middle for United as usual with Dodgy Penalty and Fergie Time backing him up.
The corner from Giggs is wasted thanks to a foul in the box.
Ally McCoist wearing a wooly hat... and shorts... what a silly billy
O.G. seems to be our best hope for a goal unless Chicharito comes on.
Is Ally McCoist in charge of Rangers or is it Walter Smith?
LOL from both of us, UWS.
Did you see that Saurez has been banned for 7 matches for biting an opponent!
Suarez is an idiot. Are you talking about the Uruguayan international who plays for Ajax?
again... I am getting frustrated with the performance again!
Still haven't lost all season but I am still very disappointed
Bloody hell - I had not heard that.
Yes. LOL regarding Ally.
Happoel have taken the lead against Benfica.
Fabio is called for a foul on Broadfoot.
Long range free kick oppo for Gers now.
Vladimir Weiss crossed for David Weir , but he missed the header. I thought a shot was on .
BOB... pay attention to the NOCITO SPORTCENTER!!!
Giggs wins a corner for United.
BOB... another score here
Valencia are 3-0 up
Hopeless corner by Giggs
Sorry, mate.
Hopeless pass by Bob's mate
Barcelona have taken the lead
Can I just say that Valencia are 3-0 up? No, there isn't time...
I'll let you off
Pedro with that Barcelona goal.
Kenny Miller is arguing with the ref about something.
Berba yelling at teammates...either Nani or O'Shea
Berba - lay off my Nani.
McGregor struggled to punch away the cross from Giggs.
Nice passing move from United and then Nani hits row Q
Neat little one-two there between Nani and Carrick but then into Row Z.
Nani shoots high and wide. I am sure UWS will comment about that shot. I am not so sure if BD will criticize that shot from his favorite player.
Blimey - 4-0 Valencia!
Oh - Rooney with a looping header just onto the bar.
ooh, Roon off the bar
Still he made a mess of an attack twice a few minutes ago
Valencia are now FOUR up
Roon nearly scored as his header bounced of the top of the bar after a great cross from Fabio.
I guess Bursa is waiving the white flag.
Bloody Hell.. Miller was in there!
United defense just let him come in... thank god he went for the shot!!
VDS did well there as Weiss played Miller in. Why didn't he pull it back?
I was worried for a moment as Miller was through, but VDS did well to narrow the angle. The corner is cleared by United.
Graham Sharp and Dion Dublin both agree with me about Miller should have passed
Merson says that after the first 20 minutes... Inter are shocking.. is Rafa done?
I agree as well. It was really difficult for Miller to score from that angle.
Hiring Rafa was the biggest mistake that Inter could make.
Martin Tyler: "Softy softy...catch a monkey." ????????
Gooner says: For a match without much incident, it's flown by.
Two nil to Spurs!!!
Modric with Spurs second!
I am definitely not a happy chappy
Half time.... CRAP!
Looks as if Spurs will top the group with Inter second, eh?
Half-time at Ibrox.
The halftime score at Ibrox is 0-0. United need to improve in the second half to avoid a second consecutive 0-0 draw against Rangers.
Who have United got in the final match?
I think they play Valencia at OT.
How are United still undefeated this season??
United have many draws, but have not lost a competitive match this season.
Yup, that is our last match
United haven't lost since Munich
Merson talking about the Real players being sent off...he thinks they should be banned for four games... I agree. The ref had to book them but there should be more punishment
I thought our last loss was against Chelski at OT in April.
I thought Munich was after Chelski... I'll take a look
If the Real players intentionally got themselves sent off then the ban should be a minimum of four matches.
Rangers about to get us underway in the second half. Come on, United!
The second half kicks off.
COME ON UNITED!!!
My boy Nani picks up an early free kick opportunity. Come on!
Hutton concedes an early free kick giving United a great opportunity.
The Chelsea match was on April 3
You're right
The match in Munich was the midweek before that
Rooney....not too far away.
Second half underway
Roon hits a decent free kick wide
The free kick from Roon was just wide. That was actually a decent effort.
Miller is flagged offside and kicks the ball away, showing his frustration.
Everyone is saying it is a matter of time before Roon comes good....when is that time??
I think that's wishful thinking.
United about to take a corner after Weir conceded one form a Nani cross. Broadfoot clears.
Bale hits the crossbar from a free kick
Giggs crosses for Berbatov.. hopeless
Drac with a Roon-like finish, didn't time the volley wall at all.
Giggs crosses from the left and Drac mishits the volley wide to the delight of the Rangers fans.
Penalty for Spurs
Nani is called for a foul on Foster when he was hoping for a corner.
Bale to take.... missed!!
Nani has apparently been studying at the Wayne Rooney school of English language acquisition.
Carrick with a shot... best chance for United
Oh - Carrick was in on goal but hit it straight at the keeper.
United nearly scored with thier best cghance of the match as McGregor saved superbly from Carrick.
Hopeless touch from an overlap run from Fabio
There is a goal in Italy... Inter take the lead Cambiaso with the goal
Valencia are five up
Roon wins a corner after great defending from Whittaker. The corner is cleared.
