Soccer Sunday Plus
It's already been a terrific Sunday morning of Premiership footer with Chelski slipping up at St. James' Park. Next up - the Scousesox travel to on fire Tottenham for the big match of the weekend. Join me for the action from 11 am onward on FSC. And stick around for the draw for 3rd Round of the Cup immediately following the match.
295 Comments:
That earlier match leaves the table looking quite bright for those of a Mancunian perspective:
1. Man Utd 31 pts
2. Chelski 29 pts
3. Arsenal 29 pts
4. Man Citeh 26 pts
5. Bolton 23 pts
6. Spurs 22 pts
So Spurs could leapfrog Bolton into fifth with a win at Shite Fart Lane today against Pool.
Here are the teams for this afternoon's match-up:
Tottenham: Gomes, Hutton, Kaboul, Gallas, Assou-Ekotto, Lennon,
Palacios, Modric, Bale, Van der Vaart, Crouch.
Subs: Cudicini, Pavlyuchenko, Defoe, Bassong, Kranjcar, Corluka, Sandro.
Liverpool: Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Skrtel, Konchesky, Kuyt,
Meireles, Lucas, Maxi, Torres, Ngog.
Subs: Jones, Aurelio, Jovanovic, Kyrgiakos, Babel, Poulsen, Shelvey.
Referee: Martin Atkinson (W Yorkshire)
Morning BD
Very pleased about the earlier match.
Could have been better!
Top of the Crop!!!
Norwich hammer Ipswich this morning 4-1 and move up the table and dropping Leeds
One of the good things about yesterday's result... United caught Chelsea on GD and we've scored more
Remember, Chelsea started something like 19 for and 1 against
Morning, Dave! So that must be curtains for Keano, wouldn't you think?
Good morning BD and UWS. That earlier result was great news.
Did you see the Ashes?
England were in trouble after being 221 runs behind after the first inning.
They have responded with a second innings score of 309 for 1
Morning, MUR! Great to have you on board for the late match.
I missed the Ashes - can only keep my mind on one sport at a time.
It seems as if we may no longer be talking about the Tractor Roys.
Just a reminder. The 3rd round draw is after this match.
The match kicks off at Shite Fart Lane.
Alrighty then, Pool get us underway at Shite Fart. I know what the Gooner is hoping for, but what result do you lot want?
The announcers are Jon Champion and ex Spurs manager David Pleat.
David Pleat is highlighting the battle between Bale and Johnson.
I want Spurs to win.
I was reading your comments that I missed from yesterday and wanted the MK Dons vs AFC Wimbledon in the Cup. They were drawn against each other in Round 2 but MK Dons lost their replay so it didn't happen.
I don't know if I want FC United in the next round. On 606 yesterday their fans said they wouldn't go to OT and put any money in Glazer's pocket
Thank you for humoring me with my juvenile scatological humor with Shite Fart Lane, MUR.
I want Spurs to win... they will probably be more of a danger to United in the league but living in the UK in the 70s and 80s makes me want Liverpool to drop as far as they can
Lennon sprinted down the pitch, but his back heel found nobody.
What about a match between the Uniteds at FC United's home patch in the 3rd Round? I'd love to see it.
I want Spurs to win for the same exact reason as UWS.
Oh - Modric with the first real chance but he bobbled his shot into the ground after a lovely ball back from the Leeds Utd. academy boy Aaron Lennon.
Do you guys not like Spurs?
I know why Steve doesn't. I guess Bob has an excuse for family reasons. MUR?
I think they play attractive football.
I have always liked them since the Hoddle, Ardiles and Villa days.
FC United play their home matches at Bury's Gigg Lane. If the FC United fans boycott then I guess they miss the chance to see the most important match in their club's brief history.
No - I quite like Spurs, especially with the ex-Leeds connections but I tend to keep it under my hat when I'm visiting the Gooner. He has no tolerance for it.
The odd thing is that my dad used to support Spurs back in the 70s when we were kids but he's done a treacherous turn-around and is an Arsenal supporter now. Shocking behavior!
I don't have anything against Spurs. I stated that I want them to beat Liversox.
Oh - Maxi was just inches away from opening the scoring there.
I can understand that.
Of course, you do have a name for their ground!
My brother-in-law Jon hates Spurs because of Phil liking the Arse.
Maxi shoots wide after a scramble in the box. Spurs have been brilliant in the CL,but shocking in the EPL.
SHOCKING WAYNE... SHOCKING!
I don't necessarily want the Scousesox to be relegated. It would be bad for the league. I'd prefer to see Wolves, Wigan and Blackburn go down.
VDV tries another back heal and he damages his hammy again
Surely, Defoe will be coming on
Oh dear - VDV has pranged himself and he's done for the day (and perhaps for some time). Wee Jermaine Defoe to come on in a bit.
Bob came up with the name for the ground. I find it humorous and figure and have no problem as long as he is not mocking OT .
It is unrealistic for them to be relegated but I would love them to end up in the bottom half or ESPECIALLY out of Europe
Understood
Yeah - here comes Jermaine then.
Dafoe is on as UWS stated. VDV had hammy problems.
I agree with UWS. regarding Liversox.
LiverSox are passing the ball well.
Their problem is that they are playing well against the big teams and then not beat Wigan
Decent volley there from Defoe after Modric's cross.
Dafoe volleys straight at Reina after a great cross from Modric.
When are you leaving for the Empire State?
David Pleat, you are a Muppet!
Mireles took a shocking corner and Lucas did an impersonation of someone who has not been taught how to head a ball.
I'm off down the road after the 3rd Round draw, hoping to get back by 9pm or so. We've had a couple of days of snow up in my patch, so I may run into some slippery areas. I'll take it easy.
Did you like how Rooney played yesterday? What I saw, he looked energetic, could control and pass the ball and was pleased when his teammates scored!
I did a Wikki last night and discovered that FC United play their home matches at Bury's Gigg Lane. They are going to have a 5000 seat stadium built at Newton Heath.
Please drive carefully
Crouchie goes close with a touch at the near post
Oh - Maxi draws a good save out of Gomes.
I agree UWS. It seemed as if he Drac reversed roles from last season where Drac was the finisher and Roon was the provider yesterday.
Cheers, mate! I would love to see that match up at Gigg Lane.
I heard a bloke talk about Newton Heath... the original name of United!
I second UWS. Please drive carefully on the way home.
Spurs are currently level fifth with Bolton on points but with an inferior goal difference.
These guys that formed FC United have deserted United because of Glazer. Could you turn your back on United MUR?
Do these guys still cheer for United during Match of the Day?
So is there a connection between the anti-Glazer folks who wear the green and yellow Newton Heath clobber at OT and the FC United venture?
Yes we were originally Newton Heath and even wore different uniforms at that time. Do you remember our original colors, UWS?
Bob, I know you are probably holding off 606 for your drive home but one fan said the Bradley Johnson wants to leave ER for a bigger club. Did you know that?
I would never turn my back on Man Yoo. They have given much joy over the years. My allegiance is always with them.
I saw a bit of the FC United match on FSC last night. Their fans were going really potty. The Brighton ground was really strange looking with no stands at one end and a big athletic track around the pitch.
Green and Yellow. We had that shirt for the 93-94 season as our third strip.... I think they actually made them wrong. They put the wrong color on the wrong side! NUMPTIES!
Yeah - I did read that one the "To Ell and Back" bulletin board about Bradley. I think we could absorb the loss, honestly. The one I'm worrying about is our skipper Jonny Howson. He's attracting some attention.
Yes, Brighton's moved to the Withdean Stadium after the Goldstone Ground was demolished. They have spent years trying to get a new stadium. I think it is in the works finally
Than you BD.You answered the question abut Newton Heath's colors.
A few Toffee Fans were saying that JB is not Premier League standard
Thank you UWS.
I did like the FC United kit, with a thin black vertical stripe up one side of a mostly red shirt. Very tasteful.
I always wondered that about JB. He never even had a chance to play much in the Championship. It's a huge jump up in standard.
Hutton should be booked for that nonsense.
Never a pen
Did you give BD credit for my Newton Heath answer?
Crouch misses the header from the corner . Hutton should be booked for diving. Definitely not a penalty.
Is the draw after his match or at half time
I actually gave both of you credit as you and BD answered at different times. Thank you BD and UWS.
I'd like to see the Prem Predictions table right now
MY TEAM IS ON TOP!!!!!!
The draw is after the match at 6PM GMT which I believe is 1 PM EST.
ah, I missed Bob's Norwich City comment
I predicted Man Yoo to be on top as well. We should move up the Predictions Table.
Now Konchesky is booked for a foul on Bale just outside the penalty area.
Yeah - you lot are really going to jump up in points this week with United on top.
Bale hits his free kick straight into the wall after he's brought down by Konchesky.
Oh - great save from Carradona as Gomes was prone. Should have been 1-0.
David Pleat wants to have Gareth Bale's children.
Kabboul's a bit winded after blocking that Torres thunderstrike.
Maybe Kabboul's got a bigger problem than sore goolies. Bassong is going to replace him. Harry won't be happy about too forced substitutions before half time.
Now Bassong is on for Kaboul.
Thinking of Pleat is enough to make one nauseous.
Gomes tips one round from Mereiles.
Mireles shot from long range and Gomes somehow fumbled the shot around the post.
This one's gone off the boil a bit since VDV came off. Spurs don't have quite the craft without him.
Caradonna is booked after fouling Modric on the break.
A bright Modric run is stopped illegally by Carradona. He's booked for his trouble.
Bale with a long range effort that Reina would surely have covered.
That was a decent free kick from Bale that went wide.
LiverSox score!!!
GOAL! Martin Skrtel cleans up the crumbs after what seemed like a routine free kick.
0-1 Pool!
GOAL 0-1 Liversox as Skrtel scrambles home after Spurs fail to clear the free kick from Mireles.
Palacios with a routine shot into Reina's arms.
Palacios shot straight at Reina.
So the Scousesox jump up to 8th, level on points with Spurs but with an inferior goal difference.
Two minutes of stoppage time.
The UK better knock off all this cold weather and snow before I get over there. I'm not having it!
Oh - Maxi wastes a beautiful chance after a brilliant ball through from Torres.
How did Maxi miss as he had just Gomes to beat? That was some great passing.
The fans are singing about Liverpool being the the greatest team the world has ever seen....I'm not sure about that!
Maxi should have double their lead though
Torres breaks but a great saving tackle by Bassong
Great recovering tackle from Bassong when Torres looked to be in on Gomes.
Torres was through and Bassong made a world class tackle.
Half time and Spurs are behind... they're used to that... can you say last week! This week should be a doddle! Only one down at home!
Half time then. It got very lively at the end of the half. Liverpool and Woy will be very happy as they troop off.
Halftime and as much as it pains me to says this, Liversox deserve to be 0-1 on top at the Lane.
Sunderland vs West Ham is next Sunday's game... not a classic
United's match is the late game on Saturday at Blackpool.
We follow that up with Monday Night at home to Arsenal and then the Sunday match against Chelsea
We could have the league won by Christmas!!
Brilliant play by Alex for Chelsea!!!
That was comical defending by Alex. I loved the mounds of snow behind the goal and the snow flurries during the match at St. James' Park.
If we defeat Chelski and the Gunners then it would be difficult to say that we won't win the league.
That's what I'm heading into this afternoon. Unfortunately without the undersoil heating at St. James'.
I'm really not enjoying this Heeltastic ad. Bring back the ShamWow guy and Jennifer Love Hewitt's zit cream. All is forgiven!
I noticed two SPL matches were canceled. Was that due to the weather or the referees strike?
We're back at the Lane for the second half then....no further changes.
The second half kicks off at the Lane.
More likely to be weather-related. I'm sure that there are some Maltese refs that they could have bring in.
Torres is through, but make Bassong makes another excellent tackle.
Torres was noticeably slow on that break. He's allowed defenders to make up a few steps on his twice now.
Now Pleat wants a snog with Fernando Torres. What will Gareth Bale think?
Bale beats Johnson to get in the cross that Crouch lays back to Dafoe to scuff harmlessly to Reina.
I think Pleat would prefer Bale because he is quicker.
Oh - Crouch knocks it down well but Defoe missed his chance.
Oh - great save this time by Raul Mereiles from Bale's bobbly shot. Close call there!
Spurs are really on the front foot here.
That was nearly 1-1 as Reina missed the cross . I did not see who shot or who cleared off the line.
Bassong makes a tackle that leads to a Liversox corner.
Coming up on the hour mark. Both managers will be thinking about some changes. Harry only has one more.
Spurs pick up a dangerous free kick after a one-two. It's Bale time again.
Spurs win a free kick as Lucas is called for a foul on Dafoe.
Into the wall again, but Martin Atkinson has blown for something. Penalty? Surely not! It is!
PENALTY!!! Bale shot into the wall. How was that an intentional hand ball? Lucky Spurs.
David Ngog seems to have committed the offense but Skrtel's being booked for lip.
Oh - Defoe's missed it! Blimey!
I am back from the shower just in time for Bale to take a free kick and just like against Arsenal... penalty from a handball in the wall.
MISSED IT
Hit the target DEFOE!!
Dafoe shoots wide with a shocking penalty. Spurs did not deserve that.
Not a good penalty record for Spurs.
I think it was a penalty
Spurs surely deserve to be level at this point, if not ahead.
Billy Gallas has played for three London clubs now. I wonder if there has been another player who's done that - discuss.
Never a foul there on LiverSox
Lucas should have been booked for a dive in the box. Eventually Liversox get a corner.Spurs clear the corner.
GOAL! And it's Skrtel who scores again, albeit at the wrong end this time. Spurs deserved that. It was all about the Modric run.
1-1 Game on!
Spurs tie it up... made by Modric and scored by OG
Skrtel scores at both ends
GOAL 1-1 a SUPERB RUN BY MODRIC AND SKRTEL PUTS IN TO HIS OWN NET TO SCORE FOR BOTH SIDES.
And still no further changes at the 65th minute mark. What exactly is Woy doing to earn his corn today?
More history for the Premiership. All clubs scored this week.
First time in a Prem League season that ALL 20 clubs have scored!!
40 goals so far!!
I think Jimmy Greaves played for Spurs , Chelsea, and the Hammers.
The love affair between Pleat and Bale is back on again. "Save the dates" to come out soon.
Great job BD and UWS.
Nice anoraking there, MUR. The Gooner has also suggested that Clive Allen played for Arsenal, Spurs and QPR.
To your previous question
Clive Allen played for QPR, Crystal Palace and Spurs
Remember, he signed for the Arse as well but never played and was swapped for Kenny Sansom
Bassong is called for a foul on Torres. That was rather late.
I just looked it up... he also played for Chelsea, West Ham and Millwall!!!
6 London clubs plus the Arse
Was that a pen for LiverSox?
Ball Hog Defoe shoots
Oh - big shout there for a Liverpool pen. Martin Atkinson clearly has given out his quotient of pens today.
Thanks BD. Great anoraking UWS. How about Ian Wright. He played for the Gunners,Palace, and Hammers.
I guess Gallas isn't that special!!
I would think no one could beat Clive Allen
WOW UWS!!! I don't think anyone will top Clive Allen's seven London clubs. Great work !!!
Wow - on the Clive Allen issue! He must have gotten booed all over the capital when he played.
I guess Clive Allen has more London "clubs" than a professional golfer.
Pat Jennings played for the two big North London clubs and Watford. Do they count as London?
It is strange with all the animosity between the clubs that so many players have played for Spurs and Arsenal. Managers too
Ngog has gone off injured and Woy makes the "attacking" move of putting Fabio Aurelio on in his place.
Ngog hobbles off injured and will be replaced by Fabio Aurelio.
boom boom Basil MUR
Nice one, MUR!
Looks like Torres and Rooney are both coming back to their best
It just feels as if there will be a winner in this one.
Thank you UWS and BD.
I'd say that both Torres and Roon are still to come back to their best. As Fergie said in mid-week, "He's got a bit to go."
Before we forget, we must congratulate UWS as Pompey played up with a fantastic result in South Wales on Friday.
Clive Allen also played for Bordeaux, Citeh and Carlisle
He only played 5 games for England... even though he had that 49 goals in a season in '87? They lost to Coventry in the Cup Final that season
Too late Jon. I knew about the draw yesterday evening.
I remember the 49 goals. I don't think he came anywhere close to approaching that figure again. Is Clive Allen an assistant with a team at this time?
I missed that result - what was the score between Portsmouth and Swansea?
Reina missed another cross, but recovered in time to block a Bale volley.
Torres has a tumble with the linesman.
Send him off!!
Torres hacked down the linesman!!!
Pompey came from behind to win 1-2 at the Liberty Stadium.
Pleat's in love with Bale's "deep balls" now. Get a room!
Pompey won 2-1
Swansea took a first minute lead through James Beattie. They were all over them but Pompey equalized before half time and won it in the second half
Torres is flagged offside. Hopefully he won't get in any fights with the linesman.
oomph.. that was close
That was a decent long range effort from Mireles that went just over the bar.
Inside the last five minutes now - will there be a late winner?
Modric volleys wide after a headed clearance fell for him.
Carradona may have to come off here with a shoulder injury.
Now Caradonna is down injured.
This is a link from Justin for the Cup Draw.
I think it is ITV and will change to the Cup Draw
http://www.justin.tv/motownmike#/w/596463008
Krygiakos isn't changed yet and that's irritated Carragher as he troops off.
I think Krygiakos is on for Caradonna. Carrie is not pleased.
