Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!
198 Comments:
And of course, when you think Brazil, you think...the Emirates? Actually, it is the European "home" for the Brazilians.
Team news for this afternoon's match:
Brazil (4-4-2): Julio Cesar; Alves, Lucio, Thiago Silva, Andre Santos; Jadson, Lucas, Ramires, Elano; Damiao, Neymar. Subs: Victor, Jefferson, Maicon, Luisao, David Luiz. Sandro, Henrique, Elias, Renato Augusto, Lucas, Jonas.
Scotland (4-5-1): McGregor; Hutton, Caldwell, Berra, Crainey; Morrison, Adam, Brown, McArthur, Whittaker; Miller. Subs:
Good morning Bd . That was a creative graphic and title. Well done! The action from the EM should start in a few minutes.
The fishing show should end momentarily.
Morning, MUR! ESPN2 are favoring us with a Jock commentator and Robbie Mustoe. Fatty Ronaldo is being feted on the Emirates pitch now.
Hey Bob and Dave
I am here for a bit... bloody bass fishing just finished
Fat Ronny is the guest of honor at the EM as the teams are about to come on to the pitch and another commercial.
I agree with MUR about the graphic
I always love seeing the Brazilian friendlies. There are so many brilliant young Brazilians that there are usually one or two who catch the eye.
Good morning BD and UWS We are ready for some action. I wonder if this match will be close.
Morning, UWS. Are you two taking the piss about the graphic!?
I was not home for the U.S. match because my daughter was in a softball tournament and their team played a ridiculous four games yesterday. She was out there for seven hours. I did record the match and watched part of the first half.
ManYoo is for Charlie Adam - what do you make of that?
I love the graphic and the title.
I watched the U.S. v. Argies on tape last night when I got home. The U.S. were well under the cosh for most of the match but did well to keep the Argies at bay. Timmy was brilliant. Great result for the boys!
I like that . He will be an excellent replacement for Scholesie.
I wasn't being sarky at all!
I have to go to the loo... I'll be back ( I know, too much information)
The match kicks off from the EM.
I know this was the opening match of the '98 World Cup, but the Scots were a more talented team at that time.
The Scots get us started then. My favorite in this fixture was in the 1982 World Cup. Group stage match - Scotland scored first and then the Brazilians really turned on the flair. It ended 4-1 and every goal was a classic.
Not much friendly action there between Scott Brown and Danny Alves.
I remember that match . After that first goal, the Scots were torn to shreds.. There have been some close matches such as 0-0 in '74, the 0-1 loss in '90 and they were unlucky to lose 2-1 in'98.These are different times.
Suicidal ball there from Charlie Adam to Neymar but the chance was snuffed out.
That was sloppy by Charlie Adam , but the Scottish defense clear. Then Lucas shoots wide.
Great tackle by Alan Hutton.
The 1982 Brazil has a special place in my heart as I was too young to truly appreciate the 1970 side.
The same is true for me. They should have won that tournament.
Who is the Brazilian manager now? Is Dunga still around?
The Scots are doing well to stop Brazil from getting into any kind of gear so far. Just flashes of brilliance.
I'm surprised to see Lucas rather than the in-form David Luiz in the middle of the park for Brazil.
It has been a decent start for Scotland As Adam and Whittaker have formed a great understanding.
Dunga resigned immediately after the Holland defeat. I am not sure who the current manager is.
Okay, that answers my question. Menezes on the bench for Brazil.
I think David Luiz is a central defender. That is his position with Chelski. He would add a physical for a side lacking in that quality.
Brazil attack through the dangerous Neymar, but MacArthur made a timely interception.
David Luiz seems versatile enough to play out in front of the back four as well. I'm disappointed to see that Menezes has continued Dunga's habit of using three defensive midfielders today in Ramires, Lucas and Thiago Silva.
That should have been a booking as that was nasty by the Brazil # 7 on MacArthur.
Was that Thiago Silva with the nasty challenge.
Ramires heads over from a decent cross. Heading is not his forte.
Brazil has dominated possession, but I don't recall McGregor having to make a save.
Oh - best chance yet for Brazil. Lovely move ending with a sharp shot that McGregor bobbled. Neymar's having trouble with his boots as he slipped again when he could have nipped in to finish.
Oh - off the bar from Damiao after Elano's corner.
Jadson shot at McGregor, who fubled, but Charlie Adam cleared.Tehn Crainey clears for a corner As Brazil threatens.Tehn Damaio heads off the top of the bar from the corner.
So clearly it's a "Little and Large" partnership between the powerful aerial threat of Damiao and the nippy danger of Neymar on the ground.
I am back
Have Scotland made any chances?
I was reading your comments. Brazil annoy me
Only the 70 team, which I don't remember, and the 82 are their only teams that deserve the press they get.
Other than those two teams, they are ordinary in my book
It looks as if there are a few Japanese tourists who have been recruited to the Brazilian cause today at the Emirates.
A poor final pass from Ramires as Brazil threaten again.
Brazil win another corner as the cross comes off of Crainey.
Bloody hell, Dave - that was a long loo break! Are you feeling okay?
I agree with you, btw, but would add the 2002 side with Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho in the side. They were good value for their win.
The corner is headed away then crossed again as Damaio heads wide.
I always give credit to Bob standing by the 82 squad. We were watching the Brazil Italy match at one of the Dosedal's houses in West Row... we all cheered when Italy won... Bob was arguing with us asking why we wanted Brazil out.
I agree too. The 2002 side deserved their win, but were not that entertaining compared to the '70 and ' 82 sides.
I remember that match and remember feeling the same as Bob when Brazil lost. I felt an empty feeling .
Brazil have really dominated in the last ten minutes.
What is with those Brazilian's numbers???
I agree with MUR.. 2002 were the best but still got an undeserved "greatness" tag placed on them
That was nearly an opening goal after a great run by Lucas and a timely interception by Whittaker to prevent the goal.
That would have been a chance , but for a clumsy foul by Danny Alves on Berra.
Memory Lane Bob
Where did we watch the following games?
England vs France
Semi Final
Germany v France
Did we watch more together besides the Brazil Italy match?
That hair gives that bloke three more inches of height!!
I see that Webbie is officiating. Can an English ref be neutral when the Scots are playing despite the fact that it is a friendly?
Oh - Danny Alves should have hit that one.
Neymar down getting treatment now after a clash with Brown.
Germany vs France was an evening game and England vs France was played in extreme heat where a few of the English players had heat exhaustion. I was at my house for both matches.
England v. France in 1982 was at your house. You were in the bog (sound familiar?) when Bryan Robson's early first goal went in.
France v. Germany was at the Hunter's. I can still remember Stan the Man being livid over Shumacher's assault on the French lad.
I think Scott Brown has had a decent Brown.
Did you watch any games with friends MUR?
Correct Bob... did we watch any more together?
The Final?
I don't think we did watch the Final together
Good question about Howard Webb. I dunno...he's done well so far.
I was livid too. I thought the Schumacher incident was sickening and remember asking my brothers if France could be awarded a forfeit win because of that incident.
Those are the ones that I remember well.
I always watched at my house on the BBC or ITV. I usually watched with my brothers. The 1982 final should have been France vs Brazil, but Germany cheated vs France and Austria in that tournament.
Nice glancing header there by Whittaker. Closest thing for the Scots yet.
Steven Whittaker heads wide from a great free kick.
Arsenal LOST to WBA at home and only drew away... wish they played them every week!!
ooh, just wide with a glancing header
I remember pounding the coffee table during the '78 World Cup final due to the poor officiating.
I agree with Bob. Webb has done a creditable job. He must be wanting the Scots to lose, but has been unbiased to his credit.
Useless free kick from Brazil
The 82 tournament was marred IMHO by the strange round robin second stage. It was, as I recall, the last tournament with 24 teams before moving to the current 32 team format, which is superior.
Is that Lucas he is talking about the LiverSox bloke?
Never heard him mentioned with a second name
That was a dive by Ramires as MacArthur challenged and a great tackle on Neymar.
I agree with you
England drew 0-0 with Spain and Germany and were out
The group of death
Italy, Argentina and Brazil
Brazil only needed a draw because they beat Argentina 3-1 and Italy only won 2-1
Damaio is well offside after another great Brazilian possession.
The 1982, 1986, 1990 , and 1994 World Cups had 24 teams. I do prefer 32 teams in a tournament.
One nil... nice finish
GOAL! Great stuff from Neymar!
GOAL !! GREAT FINISH BY NEYMAR AFTER A GREAT RUN BY ANDRE SANTOS DOWN THE LEFT. 1-0 BRAZIL.
Are you sure about those numbers. 82 was the last year of of Round 2 games being round robin
What a pass to Andre Santos, but Alan Hutton was caught out of position and Brazil took advantage.
The '82 tournament was the last round robin tournament , but the next three tournaments had the four best third place teams advance with weird brackets.
There will be a minimum of two minutes of stoppage time.
Craig Mackail-Smith of Peterboro will make his debut for Scotland at the start of the second half.
Thanks Stats!
Fregie Jr. must be proud despite the fact that the striker was born just down the road in Watford.
Half time
off to the shower
So Brazil lead 1-0 at halftime thanks to a great finish by Neymar.
Anything for the cause, UWS! :0)
Half-time: Predictable match so far with Brazil showing the style. 1-0. Time to catch up on the news.
The most surprising results were Georgia beating Croatia with a last minute winner and Bosnia beating Romania.
The second half kicks off from the EM.
Nearly a second from Neymar as his long range effort skims the top of the bar.
A great double save by McGregor from Damaio and Neymar. Where was the Scottish defense?
The Scots start the second half by being under the cosh. I am surprised it is still 1-0.
I am back from a shower and taking the dog out
Brazil make wholesale changes?
I have not noticed any changes. I know that Craig Mackail-Smith of Peterboro will make his Scottish debut some time in the second half.
Did you see that Terry, Cashley, Dawson, Lampard and Rooney have all been released by England to go back to their clubs today?
Did you also see that Rooney was clueless that he was suspended for the Switzerland match?
Ramires shoots into Row Z to the delight of the Scottish fans.
Ramires shoots into Row Z to the delight of the Scottish fans.
How could Roon be clueless? That is common sense. It shows what a moron he is.It does make sense that those players were released to their clubs as there is no need to play in a meaningless match.
Brazil had several scoring opportunities early in the second half.
I know it makes sense to release them but why do you think Fabio would do it!!
James Morrison has had difficulty imposing his presence on this match.
I am not sure. I wonder if it is due to the fact that there are important club matches ahead and there was pressure from SAF, Ancelotti, and Harry.
Bannon, who is on loan to Leeds from Villa, is on for MacArhtur. Bob will like that substitution.
Just back from chatting with my dad.
Elaino shoots straight at McGregor with a weak free kick.
I haven't had much of a chance to see Bannon. If anything, I think that the loan moves have upset the squad. Eric Lichaj has not done the job - I'd prefer to see Lubomir Michalik back in the position.
How are things going?
Hello BD. Welcome back.
How is everything?
Damaio heads wide again. He has had lots of chances, but cannot hit the target.
You asked earlier about Charlie Adam and United. I saw that rumor. I don't think he should be good enough for United
Another decent header there from Damiao. Kenny Miller was attempting to mark him. Have I mentioned my pet peeve about strikers marking strikers? I think so....
I agree, UWS. He's also nearing the end of his career, no?
Speaking of him... he is hurt
Doesn't look good... he looks in pain and upset
I think Charlie Adam would do a decent job for United. I have been impressed with his performances for Blackpool. He has been their best player this season.
Looks okay...good
Holloway is yelling at the screen to get him off!!!
I think Charlie Adam is in his mid twenties, so he should be at the peak of his career.Morrison wins a corner off of Ramires.
I think he has been good but I think he is a player that belongs on a team just below the eilte... like LiverSox... I love typing that!
AS I was praising Charlie Adam , he takes a horrible corner, but that may be due to the knock he picked up.
I think he should stay at Blackpool.
Kris Commons is on for Steven Whittaker.
Where's Chris Iwelumo - he's been quite a consistent goalscorer in the Championship this season.
You may be right , BD and UWS. He might need another couple of seasons at Blackpool before making that move. It is hard to believe that he couldn't make it with Rangers. As I talk he shoots well over as he goes for glory.
I am not sure. He couldn't score in the EPL. I wonder of that is why he is not playing.
I was watching the US match last night at Buffalo Wild Wings so I didn't hear any commentary. Who was the bloke that came on born in Frankfurt, Germany (like me) and who was their goalscorer?
When the US scored there was one guy that cheered "go USA" I think it was sarcastic too
Is Barry Bannon on loan to Leeds.? He came on as a sub, so you have two Scottish internationals at Elland Road.
Where's Snoddy?
Jermaine Jones was born in Frankfurt. His dad was in the US Army and mom is German. The goal scorer is some eighteen year old with the Red Bulls.
Jones is currently on loan at Blackburn form a Bundesliga club.
Two Scottish internationals in the Leeds side?
Not exactly the days of
David Harvey
Billy Bremner
Eddie Gray
Frankie Gray
Peter Lorimer
et al
Damaio wins a corner off of Crainey as there is some Blackpool representation today.
I agree UWS. The internationals are Barry Bannon and Snoddy.Your statement is 100% accurate.
Cambiasso scored for the Argies in the first half and Columbian-born Juan Agudelo equalized for the U.S. in the second half. It's the second goal in two appearances for the 18 year old Red Balls forward. Great Roy of the Rovers story.
Why are friendlys such dull affairs these days. Surely there were friendlys played when we grew up and were exciting
The fizz seems to have gone out of this match.
I saw both goals while I was there
Di you hear that Lucas will be joining Chelski. He is not the Lucas on Liversox. When Chelski play Liversox Lucas could be marking Lucas.
Why did the Blue Devil not show for one of your comments?
Absolutely - Scots were the heart and soul of the Revie side as well as the Shankley Liverpool side and many other great English First Division teams of the era.
Danny Wilson is on for Christophe Berra.
Sorry - that happens when I change Google accounts on my email. At least it doesn't pop up as "Lauri in the Shower" or "Eric the Half a Bee" though, right?
I was at a bloody softball tournament during the Us vs Argentina match and watched part of the first half when I came home. I will watch the rest of the match today.
Well stated, BD!
Still too bloody cold up here for softball. It was really parky last night.
Penalty for Brazil!
What was Adam thinking as he tripped Neymar for a penalty? AN easy decision for Webb.
New ManYoo prospect Charlie Adam hacked Neymar there for the pen.
Neymar to take.....
2-0 Brazil!
Two nil
I agree with you about Lauri and Eric
GOAL! 2-0 to Brazil as Neymar sends McGregor the wrong way from the spot.
SNODDDDDDDDDY!!!!!!!
Just as BD ordered, Snoddy is on the pitch.
Shame Scotland didn't do anything internationally during that era too
They have never qualified for the second round of any tournament!
This match is done and dusted. as Brazil has two goal lead. Di you make that prediction, Nostrabobus?
Finally a bit of LUFC class for the Scotland side. Go on, lad. Dazzle em!
More Leeds players on the pitch than United ones
Where is Darren Fletcher by the way
Did he play?
I didn't but I would have predicted something like this. Very professional outing from the Brazil boys.
I'll bet that Fletch picked up an "International Break Injury."
Any bets on him getting sent off in the last ten minutes?
That is better than now because they are not even qualifying for tournaments. They came close and I am not sure why this happened as they had the talent to progress past the first round.
Fergie has fallen out of love with him lately
Fletch has not played today.
We have not loved Fletch either.
Even though Neymar's got the two goals today, the jury's still out on him for me. I still prefer Pato.
Either striker could start for Brazil. This was the perfect match to test his abilities in a Brazil shirt.
Those were two great tackles by Gary Caldwell. am impressed with his commitment.
That could easily have been a second penalty for a Caldwell handball.
That was a great run by the young Lucas before a deflected shot goes straight to McGregor.
Nearly another goal as the header beats McGregor and hits the top of the net.
Bloody hell - a striker from Peterboro is coming on now! Is their squad really that thin?
Did you see the violence in London over night?
Here is some video of it from Sky News on the Sun website... no... there is no Page 3 girl included!
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3493079/Riot-cops-arrest-201-in-cuts-demo.html
What's the point of all the damage?
Craig Mackail-Smith of Peterboro is on for Kenny Miller.
I did not hear about that UWS. Was that caused by Scottish fans or were the incidents not related to the match?
It is all to do with budget cuts
So it is Peterboro 1 Man Yoo 0 in terms of Scottish participation in this match.
Bannon shoots the free kick straight at Julio Cesar.
Is that to do with the increased university tuition. I do not advocate violence, but I wish we would protest against increased college tuition and draconian budget cuts.
Two minutes of stoppage time. I agree with your statement about the violence,UWS. There are other ways to protest.
I totally agree with you about the protest but both of the videos on the link I sent you just show mob mentality
Jonas misses another chance as he shoots over with just the keeper to beat, as he makes his debut.Don Cowie of Watford is on as a sub.
I will definitely need to watch those videos to see what happened.
These guys are probably just Millwall and Cardiff fans with nothing to do on a Saturday because of no matches
Game over
bit of a bore
Brazil win comfortably 2-0.
That could be true as those teams played a week ago in London.
Cheers everyone. It was great chatting. I will probably chat with everyone next weekend as the EPL resumes.
Full-time: Very professional outing for the Brazilians. The Scots are a wee bit better than the Welsh but not much.
Throw the lot in jail
Cheerio, lads!
Take care everyone
