Time for an International Break
Just as things were getting hot and heavy in league play, it's time for an international time-out. We've got a day of Euro 2012 qualifiers to look forward to today starting with England traveling to Cardiff to meet Wales and ending with a fairly meaningless, but hopefully entertaining, friendly between the U.S. and Argentina. Care to join me for the footie smorgasbord?

Morning Bob
How are things going with you?
England go into today's match having won two and drawn one. Here are the current standings in Group G:
1. Montenegro - Pld 4 10 pts (3 GD)
2. England - Pld 3 7 pts (6 GD)
3. Switzerland - Pld 3 3 pts (0 GD)
4. Bulgaria - Pld 3 3 pts (-4 GD)
5. Wales - Pld 3 0 pts (-5 GD)
Morning, Dave! Slightly better news out of London in that my mom has decided to go on with at least the next round of chemotherapy. She was feeling really defeated last weekend and was considering jacking it all in. So we'll see how it goes this week.
Thanks for asking.
You are in my thoughts
Send my best please
I have a Soccer Saturday link going before the match
http://uwjzt1.blogspot.com/2011/03/ch2_07.html
Will do, mate. Thanks for the link!
The SS lads are chatting about the Premiership - why?
England are 222 for 6 with one over to go
I don't think that is going to be enough against Sri Lanka in the quarters
Are Sri Lanka any good?
They've already talked about the England match
Are there any games in the Championship?
Tony Cottee thinks that Chelski will win the title - what is he smoking?!
No games in the Championship today or mid-week - matches in L1 and L2.
Champions
Cottie- Chelsea
Merson- Arsenal
Le Tis- United
Rush- United
You can't think United have called the engravers yet?
England's total in 229 from their 50 overs
Not good enogh
I don't see any other side who could win the title, can you?
I am scared of Chelsea. They need to drop some points before they visit Old Trafford
I have to admit that the qualifying campaign for Euro 2012 is a bit of a bore. Most of these groups are done and dusted.
In Group A - Germany are 5 points up. In Group D - France are 4 points up.
Wish England's group was!
Well, I don't see England slipping out of the top two qualifying spots.
England about to bowl to Sri Lanka. They need to defend 229 against the hosts to make a semi final against New Zealand
COME ON ENGLAND
Sri Lanka - 6 for 0 after two overs. Good start from them.
Not a good start for England
Sri Lanka are 22 for no loss after 5 overs
Clocks change in England tonight so we will be back to normal
The Boat Race is today
Cambridge are the favorites
Good point
iamshearer on Twitter: "Why's everyone so quick to write off Wales? Have people forgotten how atrocious England are 90% of the time?"
30 off six
40 - 0 after 8 overs - not looking good for England.
Struth... I am back from picking up Tom... 57 without loss!!!
57 for 0 after 10 overs. They're cruising it.
What's Thomas up to this morning?
He coaches a rec soccer team of 4th and 5th graders.
Apparently the teams are out
Who do you think will be out there for England?
I wonder if this link will change to the England match. I think Sky are showing the game
From Sunny in Barcelona in the TMS inbox: "Don't assume it's looking pear shaped for England. This is the 2011 World Cup version of England so there's bound to be some drama lurking around. Just think of this period as the calm before the storm."
My link has just changed to the match
BREAKING ENGLAND TEAM NEWS
Michael Dawson, Scott Parker, Frank Lampard, Jack Wilshere, Ashley Young and Darren Bent all start. Full line-ups to follow shortly.
What will the line up be???
Glad they did make the switch and no searching needed
Giggs, the Neviller and Hod in the studio for Sky
Classic... they show a clip of Giggs nutmegging Neville from the last time they played... good laugh had by all
Great to hear that Thomas is getting some experience with coaching. I can't imagine coaching kids that young - they've got to be complete pants. Very frustrating.
The full England line-up is Hart, Johnson, Cole, Parker, Dawson, Terry, Lampard, Wilshere, Bent, Rooney, Young. Subs: Green, Jagielka, Lescott, Milner, Downing, Defoe, Carroll.
Fabio hasn't learned anything. Wilshere and Lamps play in the same territory!
Glad to see no Barry......maybe Gareths aren't allowed to play against the Welsh
The England side:
Hart, Johnson, Daw, Terry, Cole, Lampard, Parker, Wilshere, Young, Bent, Rooney.
68 for none after 13
Looks like England is playing a 4 3 3
Lamps, Parker and Wilshire in the mid
Sri Lanka - 68 for 0 after 13 overs.
Hey... Tom's team won 15 to 1... all his doing
Your link changed too, right?
Presumably Parker is the holding but I don't see Lamps or Wilshere providing any width. I have a feeling that Lamps, Wilshere and Rooney will be tripping over each other down the middle of midfield.
I think Rooney will play wide as well Young
Yeah - they've switched to the build-up now; they're talking about Leeds great John Charles now. What a player!
Hoddle likes the line up
Sex Pistols!!
Leighton James... I remember him
77 for 0 off 15. What are England playing at?!
Getting to the showers early?
Come on England... at least get ONE wicket
Not yet - 79 for 0 off 16 overs.
Bloody hell - 87 for 0 off 17. It's all over!
Giggsy is asked if Wales most fear Rooney and of course he answers "yes." Very diplomatic but why would you fear Roon in current form?
94 for 0 off 18 overs!
Too many Leek Eaters in the studio for my taste.
Neville says how Roon has improved but they showed video of last season!
Sri Lanka is going to collapse all out for under 170... MARK THIS COMMENT TIME!
DId you get my emails during the week?
Am I send stuff to the right email?
There's one!
He is flanked by two Englishman... don't diss Ryan....EVER
Wonder if Neviller is going to mention it was Gary Speed's tackle ruined his career!
Speed says the turf isn't that good.. too much rugby!
The ball has arrived... from London by FOOT!
Don't they use multiple balls!!!
I remember an FA Cup build up on the beeb had a boy make the Cup Final ball in the days of one ball... after 10 minutes they had to replace it because it was flat... the beeb never mentioned it!
Dropped catch by England!
Yeah - fredoniabob@gmail.com.
Sorry, I don't always have time during the week to look at my home emails. Too bogged down with work.
Good morning Uws. I am a lazy bones since I just woke up. The match from Cardiff will air on ESPN2 in a few minutes.
108 for 0 after 20 overs. So much for the Sri Lanka collapse.
Morning, MUR. Good for you catching a little extra kip this morning.
Good morning BD. I missed most of the pre-match banter due to my laziness. Did anyone watch Spain vs Czech Republic yesterday? It was a decent match.
THE GAME IS ON THE TV???
WOW... I DIDN"T KNOW THAT!!
Sorry, I missed it. What was the result?
Yeah, it's on the Deuce. Not much build-up though. Starts at 10:55.
Spain came from behind to win 2-1
IN HD!!!
Also there's USA v. Argentina at 7pm EST tonight. I may be out with friends at the movies, though.
Spain from behind to win 2-1, but they dominated the match.
119 for 0 off 22 overs. Both Tharanga and Dilshan have their half centuries now. Struth!
Just over a 100 to go for the Sri Lankans.... still time to collapse!
I will watch the US if I back in time from my daughter's softball tournament.
Bob, I wish nothing but the best for your mom. She is definitely in our thoughts.
"The Dragon's Den" - bit of a silly intro there on Sky.
Bob.... did you know it was on the tellie?
Thanks for telling me
Thanks, David. I really appreciate it.
I am going to leave my link on for half time stuff
Yeah - sorry, I thought that you knew. I would have mentioned it as we got closer to kick-off, I promise.
I saw the lineup. I knew Capello was going to pull this nonsense. England win and they top the group on goal difference ahead of Montenegro( Spanish for black mountain). I don't think Spanish is the official language of Montenegro.
125 for 0 off 23 overs.
I don't understand this TV stuff... ESPN UK shows it, ESPN USA doesn't and vice versa
"England have finally ran out of Luck, Opportunities, Strategies and Energy. Four words which spell LOSE!"
We're talking Cricket not Football
No problem. I was hoping we could watch the match on the telly, after the baseball show on ends.
Finally the footer is on.
Teams in the tunnel. England being led out by new skipper John Terry.
Why isn't it being shown in HD? I have those annoying bars at the sides!
Teams at the tunnel on the link
The coverage has started on ESPN2 now, UWS. There...I told you!
Ta very much
Bob, I disagree with your statement about the groups as eight out of nine second place teams will be in the playoffs. Those places are hotly contested. You are correct about first place though.
Surely, England have to win.... Wales have no points!
Any predictions for the score-line? I'll 1-2 England.
COME ON ENGLAND... hey... I predicted an England win in the cricket... I'll shut up for the football
127 for NONE!
Teams coming out
That's a fair point about the groups, MUR. It just seems as if the big teams - Germany, France, England, Italy, Holland - all have relatively easy paths to the tournament.
Wow - a Shake Weight ad! I thought that they had taken those down after having the piss taken on SNL. It's too easy really.
Miss Wales singing the national anthem for Wales
TV ahead of my link
Glad that ESPN are showing the anthems
Anthems now.....
She's a bit tasty...and a nice voice.
Opera trained Miss Wales
COME ON ENGLAND!!!!!
Wales are full of singers!
Sounds like a great atmosphere at Cardiff today.
132 for 0 off 25 overs.
I just wished the fans would show some respect and be quiet during the anthems.
Changed to HD
ESPN still at the stadium... Sky at commercial
Aaron Ramsey is the Welsh skipper today.
Here we go then. England to get us underway.
Come on, you Three Lions!
We're off
The match kicks off from the Millenium Stadium.
My link is a couple of seconds ahead of the telly.
Roon and Bellamy with some early handbags.
Bellamy screams right into Rooney's face
Bellamy is a nut
Brilliant as Cashley is bundled to the ground by Bellamy and Roon exchanges words with Bellamy.
Brilliant as Cashley is bundled to the ground by Bellamy and Roon exchanges words with Bellamy.
I wouldn't have had Bent up top... Carroll in my books.
I know Capello said he isn't 90 min fit... bring him off
Gary Speed - Leeds hero - on the bench for the boyos.
Gary Speed should know about handbags. Not much about managing based on his experience at Bramall Lane.
134 for none and ANOTHER dropped catch
Bent has been scoring for England. I don't mind having him in the side.
Will England get any wickets?
I would have played Crouch and Dafoe up front.
Cagey opening to this match.
The pitch is really cutting up
I agree, MUR. Roon actually is hugging the touch-line. Why play him out wide?
That was a decent move by England until Glen Johnson slipped.
I never get putting Rooney out wide
Half of this Welsh team plays in the Championship.
YES!!
PENALTY!!!
YESSSS!!!!!!!
Ashley Young earns a penalty!
I: think it was a dive!!!
PEANLTY TO ENGLAND AS THE PORTUGESE REF AWARDS ENGLAND A PENALTY AS COLLINS WAS JUDGED TO HAVE TRIPPED DAFOE.
Lamps to take... YES!!!!!!!
The Sky bloke thinks it was a pen
That's the start that we wanted. Frankie Lampard with a cool finish.
1-0 England!
LAMPARD SENDS HENESSEY THE WRONG WAY TO GIVE ENGLAND A GREAT START WITH A 0-1 LEAD.
I thought that the penalty was a bit soft too.
If the keeper didn't guess... it would have been an easy save! I don't know why keepers guess. It it is a good enough penalty, they won't save it anyway. Why not react!
Wasn't it Ben that that was fouled/.
On the replay, it looked like a better decision by the Portuguese referee.
I feel for the Welsh as I felt that was a soft penalty. My mistake. J Collins was accused of fouling Ashley Young, not Dafoe.
I thought it was Ashley Young who went over, no?
Perhaps it was Bent that was fouled, but still seemed a soft penalty.
If they don't guess, will they have enough time to react even if the pen isn't that good?
Yup... it was Young
Don't you think that pen could have been saved? It was two feet from where he was
So England top Group G now, level on points and games played but four goals better on GD.
All England pressure now. This is good.
Roon looks like a man without a position
I think he should be a new Scholes
I think Roon is in debt to the Chinese gangster bookies.
I'd like another goal please
Corner swung in by Lamps and well collected by Hennessy.
YES!!!
TWO NIL!!!
YOUNG TO BENT!!
GOAL! YESSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
0-2 England as Ashley Young feeds Darren Bent. Easy peasy.
GOAL 0-2 to England as the Welsh defense was caught out by a long ball and Ashley Young crossed to Dareen Bent for a simple tap in.
Why are Wales so rubbish? They've got good players. I don't get it.
Great pass by Johnosn
Great cross by Young
Great finish by Bent
Half the Welsh is good players and half is journeyman Championship players.
Who played the ball out to Young there. That was a lovely ball.
Then Johnson must have taken the free kick.
Yeah - but this lot don't even look Championship level. It's like watching England against San Marino...or Aldershot!
146 for NONE
Oh - Young found Roon in the box but he didn't have time to get the volley right.
Of course... Rooney misses his chance
I'd like to see Ashley Young go to Old Trafford
At least the footballers are doing right by England today. The cricketers are stinking it up!
So who would you get rid of - Valencia or Nani - to make room for him?
nani
Did you see that Nani said that SAF won't let him do his tricks
BBC Test Match Special's Michael Vaughan
"This is a hammering. England are having their pants pulled down."
The Guardian bloke doing the play by play on the cricket has gotten so bored that he's commenting on what he'll be cooking tonight.
151 for 0 after 31 overs now.
If you lot get rid of Nani I won't have any players that I like at Old Trafford.
USA vs Argentina is on at 7 from New Jersey... I should have gone
It is currently Armenia 0 Russia from Group B where the Irish host Macedonia at 3:45. Only two points separate first place from fourth. An Irish win and Russian loss would leaver this group wide open.
Well... what is he cooking?
I agree with your assessment of the Welsh, Bob.
A curry. Of course.
Wilshere is down injured.
duh
I love curry.
Haven't had one for yonks!
Hopeless long ball from Collins easily knocked back to Hart by Johnson. Wales are useless!
Northern Ireland lost 2-1 in Serbia yesterday after being in front. I am not sure about the Scots this weekend.
Every once in a while, I'll drive up to Buffalo for one.
Johnson and Young combining well... Becks and Neville like
Hope Young doesn't go to Anfield
165 for 0 off 31 overs. Bloody hell!
The Meadowlands only a 3 hour drive
It is still Armenia 0 Russia. A draw would actually be a good result for the Irish.
Oh - Roon might have made better contact with that Young corner.
