The LOB GOP Debate Drinking Game

Join me tonight for the only way I know to maintain my sanity whilst doing my civic duty and watching the GOP debate - with a few drinks on hand. It's Rick Perry's first turn at the dance, so it could get feisty. Here are the rules:

Take a swig of your favorite beer whenever:

* A candidate tips his/her hat to "the Job Creators."

* Rick Perry reminds the audience that he's from Texas.

* Newt Gingrich complains about the MSNBC hosts' "Gotcha Questions."

* Mitt Romney says the phrase "career politicians."

* Ron Paul threatens to burn down the Federal Reserve building.

Take a shot of your favorite spirit whenever:

* The MSNBC moderators ask the candidates if they believe in evolution.

* Michelle Bachmann claims that she has received a message from God.

* Rick Santorum tells people not to Google "Santorum" (seriously - do Google "Santorum!")

* Herman Cain blames Obama for the jobs crisis.

* Jon Huntsman gets a chance to speak.

Bottoms up if the issue of education comes up or anyone proposes a stimulus plan that would actually add jobs to the economy.

• Feel free to add your own rules!

The debate starts at 8pm on MSNBC - see you there!

Not sure I can actually give time in my life to watch it but will have this up to watch. Does it start at 8 or is that just pre-ramble to b/s

Hi Simon - I'm back with my evening's libations. The debate does start at 8pm sharpish. I'm watching the preliminaries as I type here.

7:44 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

We're in the Reagan Library tonight so of course Nancy Reagan is getting a huge ovation as she enters the hall.

7:45 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The candidates are taking to the stage now. As usual, the media hacks have lined them up with the front runners in the middle and the lesser candidates at the fringe.

7:49 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Here we go then. Coverage of the debate is about to start.

8:00 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

It's NBC Nightly News host Brian Williams and Politico hack John Harris asking the questions tonight.

8:02 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

First question up is for Perry, the new front runner. He's being asked about his record in Texas. So a quick swig or two of the Octoberfest straight away.

8:03 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Interesting format already, almost like a dialogue between Williams and Perry.

8:04 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Now on to Romney. He's also being asked to defend his record in Massachusetts.

8:05 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Pretty close to the "career politicians" line there from Romney. I'm going to pass on another swig - it's early doors after all.

8:06 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Now it's degenerated into a back and forth between Perry and Romney on the difference between Texas and Mass.

8:08 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Now we're finally on to Rick Santorum, who is highlighting his social positions.

8:09 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Herman Cain makes a pitch for his crazy 9% flat tax plan.

8:12 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Uh oh - Huntsman gets a chance to speak.

Shot!

8:13 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Ouch - Huntsman having a real go at Romney here. "47 just won't cut it." Nice sharp line.

8:13 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Bachmann - the forgotten one - is up next. "Obamacare is killing jobs." Yuck.

8:14 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

Boom - I like this. Are they given the questions in advance? They're eobviously tailored to each candidate.

8:14 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

23 foster KIDS - thats a drink

8:15 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Ron Paul's turn next. He's asked a reasonable question about appropriate regulation.

"Regulation of the marketplace takes care of things."

8:16 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm right with you, mate. Already killed one Octoberfest and a shot of bourbon.

8:17 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

Pumpkin beer WILL get me through this. I forgot Newt was running. Surely the final days.

8:19 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Now it's Newt Gingrich with his version of "I Love the 90s." He should have The Cardigans playing in the background.

8:19 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Nice choice with the Pumpkin Ale, Simon.

8:21 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

It's back to Mitt v. Rick again. John Harris with the questions now.

8:22 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Bloody hell - Medicare should be "block granted back to the states!" says Perry. Wow!

8:23 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

Newt looks really old. I guess he is. I love Romney slagging off Health Care. I'd wager Day 1, he does nothing of the sort. Best of a bad bunch.

8:23 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

I hope we can all live like Utah. Thanks Mr huntsman.

8:25 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Obama's got to hope it's not Romney, though, as it will be harder for him to distinguish himself from Mitt.

8:25 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Perry and Bachmann on the "Repeal Obamacare" tack now.

8:26 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Gingrich with a stab at John Harris there. I'm taking a swig even though he didn't say it was a "Gotcha Question."

8:27 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Add Newt to the "Repeal Obamacare" crowd.

8:27 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

Wont be Romney I feel. Ship has sailed and healthcare will kill him at the base. The media seems to be backing Perry and I cant see it changing. It will be straight red v blue if that happens.

8:28 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Does it seem to anyone else as if half of this crowd is running for a spot on either the Romney or Perry-headed ticket?

8:29 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

Newt: We all love each other. He's angling for VP. No-one will pick him.

8:29 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

Totally agree Bob! 100% Or 8% in Mass apparently :

8:29 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Perry's a loser in the General IMHO. Easy stuff for Obama if that's the case. Social Security is a "Ponzi Scheme?" That dog won't hunt.

8:29 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Santorum also in favor of "block grants." He wants on that Perry train.

8:31 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

Perry will cling to job creation and the average Hun will only see that and not read the editorial. I prefer Romney of them all.

8:32 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Perry gets a tricky question about Black unemployment and he plays it off with a sense of glibness.

8:32 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

Channeling JFK now??? Surprising.

8:33 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

Channeling JFK now??? Surprising.

8:33 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Uh oh - now it's questions from the Twits.

8:33 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I can't stomach the thought of having any of these creeps in the White House.

8:34 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Romney pitching in his support for dirty energy sources including fracking now. Can I suggest opening up some mountain top excavation in his backyard in NH?

8:35 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

I dont know. I can see Obama getting the Carter kick out. The problem for me is the US political system. Its designed to be a series of checks and balances. Now its just a series of Yesses and nos and there's never enough of either.

8:36 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Ron Paul advocates for getting rid of the minimum wage. Ouch.

8:37 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

a dime for gas... :)

8:38 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I agree with you that Obama is in trouble, but largely of his own making. We needed a truth and reconciliation process when he came in. Unfortunately, he decided to move along rather than laying blame where it was deserved. It's come back to bite him. The center won't hold right now so we may well see a period where incumbents are in untenable situations.

8:39 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Perry was clearly stung by the Ron Paul ad - he's having a go at it now.

8:39 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

I dont know. You are mor eof an expert than me but as an ousider looking in i liked his idea of a "team of rivals". Ultimately - the economy/his health care plan and financia stimulus (largely supported by GOP at the time) will be his undoing? I hope not as I like him but now the other side is so out to get him and say no that I dont know if having him in charge is even worth it. Obama will still carry the Af/Am voting block but if the GOP put up someone orf quality he's in trouble.

8:41 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Obama's post-partisan approach was interesting. However, having people such as Tim Geithner has meant that it's been difficult for him to play the populist card at a time when people are rightly pissed off.

8:45 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Wow - Perry doubling down on the SS "Ponzi Scheme" line.

8:48 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Romney cutting a fine line against Perry on the SS issue. That might be a key issue in some of the primary states. That's a loser for Perry IMHO.

8:51 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

I like Romney view on SS. He's still the best of a bad bunch.

8:51 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

Americans know that its a Ponzi Scheme... :) Mug.

8:52 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

He certainly sounded a bit more rational on the issue there.

Now Cain wants a private account SS system. No thanks, mate.

8:52 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Ron Paul's having another dig at Perry now. The Texan v. Texan dynamic here is fascinating. Paul may well be able to chip away at Perry's support over time.

8:53 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

It's remarkable how quickly Bachmann seems like yesterday's candidate. What's happened? She hasn't changed one iota from the high point at the Iowa caucuses. It's just that the media has decided that Perry is the frontrunner.

8:55 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

Paul unfortunately has sailed so many ships. I think some of his views are well thought through but he has the odd zinger.... no way Fox will get behind him and that's his problem. Still think Perry (barring skeleton) will win overall.

8:56 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Now Santorum's having a go at Perry for the Gardisil HPV issue from his social conservative angle.

8:57 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Romney with the cheap applause line there. Drink!

8:58 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

Can only take so much booze. Typing suffering, plus 3 open windows :) Too hard.

Newt's back :) Yayyyy!
No, he's gone again.

8:59 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

If Paul wants to get rid of the TSA, that's one tick in his column from me.

8:59 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

My God- RP just said let the airlines regulate their terrorism. cant have that.

9:00 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

TSA yes.... but seriously , letting Delta/AA and anyone other than El Al do their own is asking for it.

9:00 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Brian Williams asks the obvious question about FEMA.

9:00 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

I love RP clever A/C line - will go over heads alas.

9:02 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Paul is getting more of a chance to speak tonight.

Huntsman again...I'm on to my third Octoberfest.

9:03 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Brian Williams brings up education! Oh goodness - down the hatch!

9:05 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

Education - wow. That has no place tonight. Its 9/11 week. Ron Paul being given more showing than Bachmann which I find surprising.

9:06 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Charter schools magically eliminate school violence, according to Newt. He's singing that 90s Clinton tune again. Strains of Swing Out Sister in the background.

9:07 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

It is pretty shocking. After all, she came #1 in the only polling so far. NBC are treating her as if she's on the fringe.

9:09 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

I dont get it - she has a big TP following who though mindless are vocal. Did you see Waiting for Superman? Actually let me FB that to you as i am interested in your views.

9:10 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Romney turning hard right on the immigration issue there. He seems to be against the guest worker program that both parties have supported for yonks.

9:11 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Yes. I led a discussion of Waiting for Superman here at a local arts cinema in town.

9:11 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

Newt my man.. English the languaage of governemtn, of kids, of the TSA, of Canadians, of churches.. blimey.

9:12 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Bloody hell - Bachmann finally has a chance to speak and she goes with "Narcoterrorists" and "The Bay of Pigs."

9:14 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

To be fair, I saw Scarface...its an issue there and we must keep Pacino out.

9:14 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I agree - killer dolphins!

9:21 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Bachmann with a craven appeal to Reagan lovers. Yuck!

9:24 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Perry tips his hat to Obama. Drink!

9:29 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

Yes and no. He was hitting a key point and refusing to talk about a policy he'd have been presented with years earlier.

9:30 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

We're on to foreign policy now after 90 minutes.

9:30 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

This is an interesting rift - isolationism v. imperialism.

9:33 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

Must say this has been very good - I am sure this will be much more sterile next time...

9:35 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

It has been a fairly lively debate and the differences are stark.

Huntsman again now on evolution and climate science. Far too reasonable for this crowd.

9:36 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

I agree - HUntsman a shining light here. Probably hated by his neanderthal colleagues. Sad that smarts = votelessness.

9:37 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Romney: "Tax the poor, not the rich."

9:42 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I almost forgot that Herman Cain was on stage. He, Santorum and Bachmann have been completely hosed by NBC tonight.

9:46 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Well, that's it, then. A fairly decent exchange but I still question the way that NBC isolated Bachmann tonight.

9:49 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

As usual, the Drinking Game helped enormously to keep my spirits up during a lot of conservative blather.

Thanks for keeping me company, Simon. Cheerio!

9:51 PM
Blogger WhatsupWheaton Simon said...

And you fella. have a good night. Bachmann will be reborn I assume.... Fox debate will be interesting when it comes up.
