The LOB GOP Debate Drinking Game
Join me tonight for the only way I know to maintain my sanity whilst doing my civic duty and watching the GOP debate - with a few drinks on hand. It's Rick Perry's first turn at the dance, so it could get feisty. Here are the rules:Take a swig of your favorite beer whenever:
* A candidate tips his/her hat to "the Job Creators."
* Rick Perry reminds the audience that he's from Texas.
* Newt Gingrich complains about the MSNBC hosts' "Gotcha Questions."
* Mitt Romney says the phrase "career politicians."
* Ron Paul threatens to burn down the Federal Reserve building.
Take a shot of your favorite spirit whenever:
* The MSNBC moderators ask the candidates if they believe in evolution.
* Michelle Bachmann claims that she has received a message from God.
* Rick Santorum tells people not to Google "Santorum" (seriously - do Google "Santorum!")
* Herman Cain blames Obama for the jobs crisis.
* Jon Huntsman gets a chance to speak.
Bottoms up if the issue of education comes up or anyone proposes a stimulus plan that would actually add jobs to the economy.

Hi Simon - I'm back with my evening's libations. The debate does start at 8pm sharpish. I'm watching the preliminaries as I type here.
We're in the Reagan Library tonight so of course Nancy Reagan is getting a huge ovation as she enters the hall.
The candidates are taking to the stage now. As usual, the media hacks have lined them up with the front runners in the middle and the lesser candidates at the fringe.
Here we go then. Coverage of the debate is about to start.
It's NBC Nightly News host Brian Williams and Politico hack John Harris asking the questions tonight.
First question up is for Perry, the new front runner. He's being asked about his record in Texas. So a quick swig or two of the Octoberfest straight away.
Interesting format already, almost like a dialogue between Williams and Perry.
Now on to Romney. He's also being asked to defend his record in Massachusetts.
Pretty close to the "career politicians" line there from Romney. I'm going to pass on another swig - it's early doors after all.
Now it's degenerated into a back and forth between Perry and Romney on the difference between Texas and Mass.
Now we're finally on to Rick Santorum, who is highlighting his social positions.
Herman Cain makes a pitch for his crazy 9% flat tax plan.
Uh oh - Huntsman gets a chance to speak.

Ouch - Huntsman having a real go at Romney here. "47 just won't cut it." Nice sharp line.
Bachmann - the forgotten one - is up next. "Obamacare is killing jobs." Yuck.
Boom - I like this. Are they given the questions in advance? They're eobviously tailored to each candidate.

Ron Paul's turn next. He's asked a reasonable question about appropriate regulation.
"Regulation of the marketplace takes care of things."
I'm right with you, mate. Already killed one Octoberfest and a shot of bourbon.

Now it's Newt Gingrich with his version of "I Love the 90s." He should have The Cardigans playing in the background.

Bloody hell - Medicare should be "block granted back to the states!" says Perry. Wow!
Newt looks really old. I guess he is. I love Romney slagging off Health Care. I'd wager Day 1, he does nothing of the sort. Best of a bad bunch.

Obama's got to hope it's not Romney, though, as it will be harder for him to distinguish himself from Mitt.
Perry and Bachmann on the "Repeal Obamacare" tack now.
Gingrich with a stab at John Harris there. I'm taking a swig even though he didn't say it was a "Gotcha Question."
Add Newt to the "Repeal Obamacare" crowd.
Wont be Romney I feel. Ship has sailed and healthcare will kill him at the base. The media seems to be backing Perry and I cant see it changing. It will be straight red v blue if that happens.
Does it seem to anyone else as if half of this crowd is running for a spot on either the Romney or Perry-headed ticket?

Perry's a loser in the General IMHO. Easy stuff for Obama if that's the case. Social Security is a "Ponzi Scheme?" That dog won't hunt.
Santorum also in favor of "block grants." He wants on that Perry train.
Perry will cling to job creation and the average Hun will only see that and not read the editorial. I prefer Romney of them all.
Perry gets a tricky question about Black unemployment and he plays it off with a sense of glibness.

Romney pitching in his support for dirty energy sources including fracking now. Can I suggest opening up some mountain top excavation in his backyard in NH?
I dont know. I can see Obama getting the Carter kick out. The problem for me is the US political system. Its designed to be a series of checks and balances. Now its just a series of Yesses and nos and there's never enough of either.
Ron Paul advocates for getting rid of the minimum wage. Ouch.

I agree with you that Obama is in trouble, but largely of his own making. We needed a truth and reconciliation process when he came in. Unfortunately, he decided to move along rather than laying blame where it was deserved. It's come back to bite him. The center won't hold right now so we may well see a period where incumbents are in untenable situations.
Perry was clearly stung by the Ron Paul ad - he's having a go at it now.
I dont know. You are mor eof an expert than me but as an ousider looking in i liked his idea of a "team of rivals". Ultimately - the economy/his health care plan and financia stimulus (largely supported by GOP at the time) will be his undoing? I hope not as I like him but now the other side is so out to get him and say no that I dont know if having him in charge is even worth it. Obama will still carry the Af/Am voting block but if the GOP put up someone orf quality he's in trouble.
Obama's post-partisan approach was interesting. However, having people such as Tim Geithner has meant that it's been difficult for him to play the populist card at a time when people are rightly pissed off.

Romney cutting a fine line against Perry on the SS issue. That might be a key issue in some of the primary states. That's a loser for Perry IMHO.
I like Romney view on SS. He's still the best of a bad bunch.

Ron Paul's having another dig at Perry now. The Texan v. Texan dynamic here is fascinating. Paul may well be able to chip away at Perry's support over time.
It's remarkable how quickly Bachmann seems like yesterday's candidate. What's happened? She hasn't changed one iota from the high point at the Iowa caucuses. It's just that the media has decided that Perry is the frontrunner.
Paul unfortunately has sailed so many ships. I think some of his views are well thought through but he has the odd zinger.... no way Fox will get behind him and that's his problem. Still think Perry (barring skeleton) will win overall.
Now Santorum's having a go at Perry for the Gardisil HPV issue from his social conservative angle.

Yes and no. He was hitting a key point and refusing to talk about a policy he'd have been presented with years earlier.
We're on to foreign policy now after 90 minutes.
This is an interesting rift - isolationism v. imperialism.

It has been a fairly lively debate and the differences are stark.
Huntsman again now on evolution and climate science. Far too reasonable for this crowd.
I agree - HUntsman a shining light here. Probably hated by his neanderthal colleagues. Sad that smarts = votelessness.

I almost forgot that Herman Cain was on stage. He, Santorum and Bachmann have been completely hosed by NBC tonight.
Well, that's it, then. A fairly decent exchange but I still question the way that NBC isolated Bachmann tonight.
As usual, the Drinking Game helped enormously to keep my spirits up during a lot of conservative blather.
