Soccer on Central Standard Time
Greetings from the Windy! I'm in Chicago for the History of Education Society meeting, but I'm hoping to be able to skip a couple of sessions this morning in order to follow the matches. First up, we've got high-flying Newcastle against Everton. Another win for the Magpies and who knows? That's followed by the usual 3pm GMT kickoffs. And at the end of the afternoon, we've got the fascinating encounter of QPR v. Citeh. Join me for the usual LOB action.

Wahay! The ESPN2 coverage has come on. Nice preview of the match, emphasizing the dream of many Toon fans.
It's fake Scot Derek Rae alongside Macca this morning.
My son has early swimming but I should be back for the second have of the Everton/Newcastle.
Just saw the lineups. Moyes playing not to lose means their chances of winning are slim.
The line-ups out of St. James's today:
Toon: Krul, Simpson, Coloccini, S. Taylor, R. Taylor, Marveaux, Cabaye, Guthrie, Gutierrez, Best, Ba. Subs: Elliot, Santon, Ben Arfa, Lovenkrands, Perch, Gosling, S. Ameobi.
Everton: Howard, Hibbert, Heitinga, Jags, Baines, Coleman, Little Neviller, Rodwell, Drenthe, Osman, Saha. Subs: Mucha, Bily, Stracqualursi, McFadden, Distin, Cahill, Vellios.
Morning, Someone. Yes - first team coach Alan Stubbs has just confirmed that the Toffees would most definitely take a draw. That shows you how much respect the Prem teams have for this new Toon side.
Newcastle can go second with a win over the Toffees today. It's kick-off time.
A minute's silence now for a horrific traffic accident on the M5 near Taunton this morning.
Wow - St. James's looks marvelous today. The pitch is like a billiards table - and at the beginning of November too!
First threat from the Toon's main scoring threat Dembe Ba. Baines did well. Guthrie hits one straight down Timmy's throat from the resulting move.
Oh dear - Coleman gets behind the Newcastle backfour but he shanks his shot, with some derisive whistles from the Toon faithful resulting.
Everton have done well to quieten the crowd early doors.
GOAL! What a calamity! Own goal by Heitinga!
Everton have thrown away their good start there. It was a fairly routine move from Guthrie out to Simpson. Simpson whipped in a decent ball and Heitinga seemed to ignore Timmy's shout and tipped the ball by him into the net.
1-0 Toon!
Everton seemed to be rattled after that calamity. Not clicking now.
Better now from Everton. Some decent possession. Hibbert had a chance to swing one in but was caught offside.
At second look, perhaps Heitinga was confused by Timmy's cammo gear?
Good morning BD. I am late because I dropped Melanie off at a tennis tournament then had a long trip to the loo.
Saha blast miles over when he should have scored after being put through.
Saha blasts wide after Rodwell had a shot blocked. where are Saha's shooting boots.
Toon fans are laughing at Luis Saha but Everton are definitely knocking on the door.
Rodwell fouls Demba Ba and The Magpies have a free kick in a decent position.
Morning, MUR - great to have you on board this morning. Unfortunately, I'll have to abandon you lot in a few moments for the opening Saturday morning session. A friend of mine is speaking.
Marveaux curls the free kick straight to Timmy.
Timmy clears an awkward back pass into the stands
GOAL! Ryan Taylor out of the top drawer!
GOAL !!! 2-0 NEWCASTLE AND A SUPERB FINISH IN THE TOP CORNER.
I hope you are enjoying your stay in the Windy City. I agree that it was out of the top drawer. Pure class.
If the first goal was a bit fortunate for Newcastle, this one wasn't. Ryan Taylor with a corker of a volley with the outside of his right boot that gave Timmy no chance.
2-0 Toon!
I guess Newcastle are the real deal. They won at Stoke and are defeating a decent Everton team.
Having a grand old time. I'm peeled off from the group last night and took in some avant garde jazz. Saw the saxophonist Tim Berne, who I last saw in about 1988. He's got greyer and thicker around the waist as have we all. Sounded as great as ever though.
Now Newcastle have another free kick.
I think the 2-0 lead flatters Newcastle a bit. Everton have played well.
As I type that, Saha has one off the post!
Great to hear BD. As I type Saha has a shot come off the post after a tame effort by the Neviller, then Drenthe shot into the side netting.
I'm off for the session, then. I should be back for the 3pm GMT kick-offs. Enjoy the match, mate!
It seems like Everton have had a decent amount of the possession.
Cheers BD! As it type a mis-hit cross by Ryan Taylor comes off the bar fooling Timmy.
Norwich City vs Arsenal will be the early match in two weeks . It sounds like a cracker.
Dan Gosling , the former Everton player, is on for the injured Cabaye.
Demba Ba wins a corner on the break and The Little Neviller is down holding his hammy. His day may be over.
Distin is on for the Neviller and is booed because he is a former Magpie.
Newcastle win a free kick in a decent position.
Ryan Taylor shoots into the wall.
Danny Guthrie is applauded for his effort when making a great tackle.
Distin commits a clumsy foul on Leon Best.
A great position for a Ryan Taylor curler.Timmy punches the free kick clear.
There will be two minutes of stoppage time.
The Toffees win a corner.
GOAL!!! RODWELL SCORES OFF THE CORNER WITH A GREAT HEADER AND IT SHOULD BE AN INTERESTING SECOND HALF. iT'S NOW 2-1.
It's halftime and Newcastle lead 2-1, but Everton must be confident , scoring with virtually the last kick of the first half.It should be an interesting second half.
I am back after taking Elizabeth and Jacquelyn to Wal-Mart and see that it is still 2-1 to Newcastle.
Leighton Baines is booked for basically what amounted to accidentally bumping into Danny Simpson. That seemed harsh by Andre Marriner.
Drenthe dribbles the length of the pitch off the Newcastle corner, but the Magpies recover
Leon Osman hits the ball with the wrong part of the boot and a decent opportunity goes well wide.
I forgot to mention that Melanie and her partner won the first round of their doubles match 8-0.
Seamus Coleman slips off the corner when he had a chance to put in a decent cross. The Toffees will have to do better if they hope to get anything out of the match. Of course, the fans loved that.
Ben Arfa is on for Leon Best, who gets a standing ovation.
The curling free kick from the Toffees goes horribly wrong as Tim Cahill was not amused and David Moyes is starting to be fed up with the poor deliveries.
I'm back, and not pleased. Should be Velios time shortly. Moyes only has one sub left.
Danny Guthrie is booked for a trip from behind on Leighton Baines. The free kick from Baines is headed out
Sell Heitinga for some new boots for Saha.
Hello Someone. Everton trail by one goal so there is plenty of time for them to get something out of this match.
Sounds like a plan to me. I will second that!
McFadden over Velios. You have got to be kidding me.
Good morning
Hey Boys,
I am back from Rec Soccer to see the last few minutes of ANOTHER Newcastle win!
How did the scoring go?
James McFaddden makes his first appearance of the season as he is on for Hibbert. It's his second spell with Everton. i thought he was inconsistent in his first spell.
Good morning UWS. All the goals were in the first half. Newcastle went 2-0 up through a Heitinga OG and a wonder goal by Ryan Taylor, then Rodwell scored with a header off a corner in the last second of stoppage time.
I have just got the PremTV link for SSN for SS
How was the Rec Soccer?
Thanks for the quick sportscenter update
I think this has been a fairly even match.
Leaving strikers on the bench for McFadden, who is nothing but a question at this point in his career.
Moyes would rather lose 2-1 that try to get a point.
Cold!
Jon's team won 4-1... he scored a hat-trick
No problem. It should be an interesting final few minutes. We play the other Northeast team at OT today.
Velios was hurt in warm up, I've been informed.
Why aren't Everton wearing blue??? IT DOESN'T CLASH!!!!
Well done! You should come down here. we are having beautiful weather. Not too hot, not too cold.
I am not sure. They might not be selling enough yellow jerseys and need to promote them.
I think Kenwright likes Coldplay.
That makes sense Someone, but I agree that McFadden never really lived up to his potential . I guess he there for depth and some cameo appearances.
Rio and Vidic in the back
Hernandez and Welbeck up front
Roon in the mid
My daughter is playing doubles in tennis and they won their first round match 8-0.
Is Fergie playing his CC team. He said Rio is no longer first choice. I expect nothing less than three points from today's match.
Rio's bruv is not around to score any last second OGs to help us out like he did to help us get a 2-2 draw.
4 added minutes to be played
I think Man. U. is going to be taking out a couple of weeks of frustration on the Black Cats today.
Four minutes of stoppage time. Will Everton score another stoppage time goal?
I hope so, but SAF is not playing his first choice side.
Ameobi wins a Newcastle corner. They take it short to run down the clock.
Well done with the tennis!
We'll have to find a link for United. They are on FSC + today
No urgency by Everton. Just rolling over and submitting. Pathetic.
Got to give it to Newcastle this season though. Flying start for them.
Thanks , UWS. We will definitely want a link as we don't get FSC plus.
That's it. The Toon have won again and remain unbeaten and have now leapfrogged United into second!!
My SS link keeps jumping to another webpage... very annoying!
Newcastle win 2-1. I am very sorry , Someone. I thought Everton played well enough to get a draw. Many teams will struggle to get a result at SJP this season.
Alan Pardew must be a hero!!
He probably is. I am impressed , considering I never really rated him prior to this season.
Lindegaard in the goal for United
SAF celebrates 25 years in charge. The best ever as far as I am concerned. What a milestone on his silver anniversary.
There looks like a few links for United through Justin.
I haven't opened them up yet
Bloody hell... it changed websites again!!!
1440: MAN UTD v SUNDERLAND (1500)
Man Utd: Lindegaard, Jones, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Nani, Fletcher, Rooney, Park, Welbeck, Hernandez. Subs: De Gea, Evans, Berbatov, Carrick, Fabio Da Silva, Valencia, Diouf.
Sunderland: Westwood, Bardsley, Brown, Turner, Richardson, Larsson, Cattermole, Colback, Sessegnon, Bendtner, Wickham. Subs: Carson, Gardner, Ji, Meyler, McClean, Elmohamady, Egan.
Referee: Lee Mason (Lancashire)
This United's reserve team. I don't understand why as they will have a two week break. Is he trying to help his pal, Brucie?
firstrowsports.tv usually has a link for EPL matches. I can check.
What did you think of Rooney's midfield performance during midweek?
I know Bob is dead against it but he plays too deep any way! If we can still have two strikers and Roon there... it could work. I think he could be a Scholsey
Blackburn vs Chelsea is on FSC. That must be the worst EPL match on today. Why are they showing that match?
I think Blackburn Chelsea are on FSC at 10
I agree... maybe Blackburn can do the same to Chelsea as they did to Arsenal!
Bloody Hell... the website changed again!!!
I didn't get a chance to watch the match yet, but I did see his deflected goal. I think he should do a good job in midfield.I'm all for it.
Just saw the Ryan Taylor goal... nice hit!
I think I found a link. It is
www.firstrowsports.tv/watch/90106/watch-manchester-united-vs-sunderland.html
Again, Bob will disagree but.... when Roon is upfront, he doesn't stay there. Have two people up there and Roon as well!
I made a mistake.It is
www.firstrowsports.tv/watch/90106/1/watch-manchester-united-vs-sunderland.html
ooh, Everton should have had a pen!!
Blackpool are unchanged for today's game
WONDER WHY?
There was an interview with SAF about his playing days with Rangers and about a player he signed for 100 quid that is now the general manager with Ross County. he talked about winning his first trophy as a school boy when his first trophy , scoring in a 6-0 win.
Preview for a SAF special on ESPN right now.
I saw it on the computer... I hope they do show it on US TV
SAF gets a standing ovation as both teams form a guard of honor.what a tribute! Well deserved for the best ever on his 25th anniversary.David Gill is the emcee.
Maybe it isn't a preview.
I do hope they show the show!
Wow, they're naming the north stand at Old Trafford after SAF.
He is up against the player who was the skipper when he won his first EPL trophy. Could you plan it any better than this? Gordon Strachan is in the stands , which is a surprise, considering the two are not the best of friends.
It's the least the y can do for SAF as they name the North Stand The Alex Ferguson Stand.
Blackburn are in a slump and Chelsea with a surprisingly weak defense have lost two in a row. Something has to give, but there could be lots of goals.
Scholes and Neville are on the subs bench with Giggs. A great shot of the great Sir Bobby Charlton.
A moment's silence for the Veterans
Where did you hear that?
The announcer on my link.
Send me your link please
The Orangge, who won several EPL title with United and Kieran Richardson are two two other former United players playing on SAF'S 25th anniversary.
Chelsea almost in there
They have lost two on the trot... anyone for three?
It is www.firstrowsports.tv/watch/90106/1/watch-manchester-united-vs-sunderland.html
Cheers
Did you hear that FIFA have banned England wearing Poppies on their shirt for the Spain match on Nov 12
I would like to see three. as Connor Wickham , the recent signing from Ipswich, is down injured. It looks like Wong will be on for Wickham.
Who's hurt right away for Sunderland?
Connor Wickham.. ex tractor boy
I did not hear that . Do they think that England is promoting drug use with the poppies. It sounds ridiculous.
Wickham being taken off the pitch on a stretcher. You hate seeing that.
I agree. I fell badly for him.
Link struggling to open... COME ON!!
All Chelsea at Ewood
Mine is doing okay. Just lots of bloody ads.
Morning, chaps! I'm back momentarily to check on the scores. Newcastle continue to surprise then. They've got United and then Chelski up next so we'll see how good they really are.
To add to the anniversary theme, Wellbeck was on loan at Sunderland last season.
I agree. Welcome back,BD.
Mine is working okay now
I have four bloody windows going!
SS, BBC, United and LOB
We are watching United on a link . Do you want the link?
Hi Bob
HOW DID THE YAK MISS THAT!!!!!!!!!!!
Great job, UWS! The Yak was nearly in to score for Blackburn, But for a last second tackle.
Cech looks hurt.
He was hit by Cashley... I think
The Yak had a chance but fired wide. Collided with Cech and the goalkeeper is down.
Yes it was
United stinking it up... very slow
His own defender ran in to him.
United should be ripping into Sunderland... it is Fergie's anniversary!
I wonder if Cech is done for the day.
Welbeck ran down the middle there but there was NO ONE running down the left
I agree. It's his silver anniversary, but no cutlery please!
I noticed that. Welbeck was triple teamed.
12 minutes in and it is the same United as the last month... not impressive... what happened to the United of early season!
Sunderland almost in there
Cech's nose appears to be busted.
Broken nose for Cech!
That was a chance for Sunderland as Richardson broke down the left, Rio headed away and Seb Larsson had a shot deflected into the side netting. The corner is cleared.
Great save by Lindegaard from Big Nik.
Bendtner with a decent effort
There will be tons of stoppage time at Ewood Park.
Looks like Cech is going to continue
How much added time will this be?
It was a brave effort by Cech. I think he will be okay as he changes his jersey.
SHould you allow players to take this long
So far I calculate about eight minutes. It will probably end up being ten minutes.
They have to because goalkeepers don't have to go off the filed like outfield players.
Finally off again at Ewood
A brilliant shot of the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand! He was involved in the building of the stand. Magic!
If they take too long , they should have to be replaced
There should be ten minutes of stoppage time at Ewood Park.
Roon should have had a yellow there
That's a good point, but goalkeepers seem to have special privileges.
Sunderland have been the better team. I am not pleased.
Cech'a still bleeding, he should not be out there.
I don't understand this
United were all over everyone at the beginning of the season. Even in the Charity Shield , they were better than Citeh.
Now it has been many games in a row that they have been very unimpressive!
I think it is has been since the end of the first half of Chelsea
Ipswich losing at home to Doncaster
Cech drops the Blackburn corner. He is pretty shaken up.Rochina shoot well over.
No goals in the prem so far!
Never a pen
That is very accurate UWS.Perfectly stated.
I agree. Blackburn players were upset. I do not blame them . Poor by Sturridge.
Neville , Giigs, and Scholes are not amused.
I think the Arsea have taken the lead
It is RVP with the goal!
United can't seem to be able to create anything!!!
Poor clearance from a Lampard corner, then finally cleared. United have a free kick as Nani was fouled by Sessignon.Larsson clears the free kick.
I agree. I expected better on Fergie's 25th anniversary.Great defending by Phil Jones on Sessignnon.
Did you see that. A plane is flying a banner that says Steve Keane out
Missed it
A draw against Chelsea would be a decent result for Steve Keane.
Bob doesn't like RVP as a striker but he has scored eight goals in four games and has now scored 29 goals in the calendar year
Brucie is not about to do United any favors on the silver anniversary.
That is a good return by RVP. Cattermole fouled Roon.
HE SHOULD!!!
Free kick chance for United... hopeless
I see the plane now... why are the TV showing it!
There is no need to show it to everyone!
Norwich have taken the lead at Villa Park
They are doing well!
Roon into the wall. Then Kieran Westwood catches a cross on his debut. He will want to be in the Ireland squad for the playoffs against Estonia.
Luv to see the Swans get a goal soon too
