Back in Sync with the UK
I'm back on Sunday hunting down the last scraps from the weekend's footie schedule, noting that the UK is now in sync with us again with summer hours. It's Newcastle visiting West Brom at the Hawthorns next up. They have a chance to join Chelski on points with an away win. Join me to see if they can do it.

Teams in the tunnel - nice touch; they're all wearing t-shirts that read "Get well soon, Fabrice."
Good morning BD. It is a great touch. I am back home and back in sync with my routine.
The team news out of the Midlands today:
West Brom: Foster, Jones, McAuley, Olsson, Ridgewell, Morrison, Andrews, Mulumbu, Thomas, Odemwingie, Fortune. Subs: Daniels, Long, Brunt, Shorey, Dawson, Cox, Scharner.
Newcastle: Krul, Simpson, Williamson, Coloccini, Perch, Ben Arfa, Guthrie, Cabaye, Gutierrez, Cisse, Ba. Subs: Elliot, Santon, Abeid, Gosling, Shola Ameobi, Vuckic, Ferguson.
Referee: Chris Foy (Merseyside)
A moment of silence for Ray Barlow, a former West Brom player, who just passed away.
Morning, MUR - thanks for joining me. How was your day, yesterday?
Very nice - I like the round of applause much better than the moment of silence.
So Newcastle to get us underway wearing an uncharacteristic orange strip.
And We're off from The Hawthorns.
Jerome Thomas - another fan of the orange boots.
The conference was great and we had a great time in Austin. I did not get home until 10:45. How has your weekend been?
That's one for the Arsenal Academy factor.
It should be a decent match . I am surprised Thomas is allowed to wear orange boots as these fussy refs will insist that it clashes with Newcastle's orange jerseys.
Another beautiful day in England.
It's been relatively uneventful. I was out with my Amnesty International crew on Friday night. We went up to Buffalo to see a movie called "Cultures of Resistance."
Foster did well to tip over from Ba after a dangerous cross from Cisse was headed away.
The corner was headed away and now another Newcastle corner
GOAL! Cisse scores again for the Magpies!
GOAL 0-1 ORANGES AS CISSE SCORES EASILY FROM CLOSE RANGE AFTER A NICE THROUGH BALL TO JONAS WHO LAID IT ON A PLATE FOR CISSE.
Really sloppy defending from the set piece there. When the ball came back out from the corner, it was slid back out wide and in truth a couple of Newcastle strikers could have knocked it in. Easy.
0-1 Newcastle!
That goal was threatening to come after early Newcastle pressure.
Here's one for the ststs file - yesterday was the first time since 1995 (during the peak of the George Graham years) that two English players scored for Arsenal. It was Ray Parlour and Ian Wright, Wright, Wright back in '95; Gibbs and Walcott yesterday.
Useless shot by Ben Arfa that ruined his great solo run.
WOW! What a sat , BD! Great archiving. That would be a first in the Wenger era too.
Jon Champion is exposed as one of the 1% who has someone mow his lawn for him.
It is indeed a first in the Wenger era.
Due to all the Toon pressure I never had a chance to respond to your night out in Buffalo. It sounds like a great time. I am not familiar with the movie. The most discussed movie is The Hunger Games.
So Newcastle join Chelski on 50 points albeit with a strangely low +1 GD as opposed to Chelski's +15 GD.
Jon is either lazy, wealthy, or is rarely home and not able to do so since he is on the road.
GOAL! Newcastle are rampant! Ben Arfa with a lovely goal!
Wonderful team goal with some great touches between Cisse and Ben Arfa, but it was all Ben Arfa with a lovely curling finish with his left boot.
0-2!
GOAL 0-2 ORANGES AND BEN ARFA SCORES WITH A LOVELY FINISH ON THE BREAK AFTER BEING PUT THROUGH BY CABAYE AND CISSE. POOR DEFENDING BY JONAS OLSSON.
Now Morrison wins a corner off of Simpson. His corner is out for another.
Yes - a number of my students rushed out to see "The Hunger Games" at its Thursday night midnight premiere here in town. I have to admit that I haven't read the books - have you?
Olsson heads well over from the next corner
I have not, but the students did in English and they had a field trip scheduled after school that resulted in after school tutorial being cancelled.
A long day for Woy's lads , who have had a decent season.
I hear that it's quite dark and that a lot of teenagers are put to the sword in the stories.
Perch is down after getting it in the family jewels.
Olsson has a header deflected for a corner.
Oh - that would have been a delightful goal from Morrison who really caught that volley well but it was always going wide.
The corner is over cooked by Morrison, but West Brom maintain possession, and Morrison hits a long range effort just wide off the throw. I am not sure that Krul knew much about that.
I have not read the books. All I know is that it is about a futuristic society where teens are in charge.
If the Baggies keep defending like this, the Toon could vastly improve their goal difference.
I think there is some similarity in plot to the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie "The Running Man," in that there is some kind of ultra-violent game show at the center of the story.
I watched the tail end of the Old Firm match and Rangers won 3-2 , denying Celtic a chance to clinch the title at Ibrox. Rangers were 3-0 up, but Celtic scored two late goals. Two Celtic players and Carlos Bocanegra of Rangers were sent off as well as Neil Lennon. Evil Cardiff drew 1-1 with Burnley
I saw the Running Man and would say that is not appropriate for a high school class.Richard Dawson got his deserved punishment at the end.I think that one was about criminals who would go on a game show in which they would meet their demise.
Better from West Brom after a slow start for which they were punished.
You'll be happy to hear that Chesterfield have defeated Paolo Di Canio's Swindon Town 2-0 in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final today. In years past, I kept a closer eye on that one.
Paolo will not be pleased, but his priority must be promotion from League 2, which looks to be certain. A shame, but Paolo will be sulking for the next 48 hours.
Fortune heads over from a great cross by Liam Ridgewell with a free header.
Ridgewell has cross headed out by Perch for a corner. He seems to be okay after being bolloxed earlier.
Paolo is a sulky old sod, isn't he?
In the Championship, Brum and Cardiff have drawn 1-1 this morning. I suppose that would have been a good result for us if we were still in the hunt for a playoff spot.
He is definitely not a pleasant personality and I am not a fan after hearing about his fascist views a few years ago.
I checked the table and your lads are only three points out of a playoff spot thanks to that win yesterday. It's not over yet!
Bloody hell - it's 0-3!
Cisse with a brace. A great finish!
GOAL !!! 0-3 ORANGES AS IT WAS FAR TOO EASY. AGAIN ON THE COUNTER AND BA LAID IT ON A PLATE FOR CISSE TO SCORE HIS SECOND OF THE MATCH.
Ben Arfa did the damage again cutting through the Baggies defense before cheekily cutting back to Cisse.
Woy is not pleased at all.
It was actually all Ben Arfa as he played two one-twos with Ba before assisting on that easy Cisse goal.
Coloccini seems to have done his hammy - may have to come off.
Did you see my comments about the Old Firm match?
I just checked the Championship and Leeds is three points behind Birmingham with a far inferior goal difference. Birmingham has a game in hand and a draw or win by Brum would leave Leeds four points out of a playoff spot. I would say it's not over.
Jon Champion has sated that there will be two minutes of stoppage time.
Halftime and 0-3 to the Oranges as it was subdued response by the Baggies fans.
Sorry, I missed that until now. Sounds like a thrilling and feisty affair!
Half-time at the Hawthorns, then.
WOY made two halftime substitutions bringing on Irishmen Chris Brunt and Shane Long. I am not sure who they replaced. Davide Santon came on for Newcastle and I believe he would replace either Collocini or Perch as the second half is underway.
Shane Long came on for his compatriot, Keith Andrews, while Brunt is on for Jerome Thomas. Santon is on for Collocini.
I'm back just in time to see Cisse blow a hat-trick chance; good save by Foster with his feet.
Nearly another goal from the Oranges as it was yet another break, this time off a James Morrison corner. Foster did well to come and block a shot from Cisse, who was through on goal.Terrible West Brom defending.
To be fair to West Brom, they are giving it a right go but they'll also be exposed to those devastating fast breaks that Newcastle hit them with in the first half.
I noticed that there are not any early or late EPL matches next Saturday. Those are both reserved for the Championship.Toon vs Liverpool is early next Sunday followed by Spurs vs Swansea.
West Brom are back in it! Shane Long capitalizes on some confusion at the back.
1-3!
Now it's Odemwinge with a sharp shot to the near post, turned around by Krul.
GOAL !!! 1-3 AS WEST BROM WERE GIFTED A GOAL BY SUB, SHANE LONG THANKS TO TERRIBLE DEFENDING BY WILLIAMSON ON ODEMWIGIE THAT LET LONG THROUGH TO SHOOT INTO AN EMPTY NET. WHERE WAS KRUL?
Olsson headed wide from the resulting corner by Morrison.
Now Cisse is down with what appears to be cramp. That would be horrible news for Newcastle.
I wonder if that's it for Cisse as play resumes.
A superb save by Foster by Ben Arfa and West Brom clear for a corner.
Foster dies well to catch the corner.
Foster saves comfortably from Ba.
Another nasty foul on Cisse. Alan Pardew will not be pleased.
Oh - Mulumbu had a chance there as the defenders back off. Cleared out.
Williamson did well to block from Mulumbu, whose shot seemed headed for the corner of the goal.
Did you see that there are not any early or late EPL matches next Saturday, just the 10 AM Matches.
I saw that. Unfortunately, I've got a conference next Saturday, so I'll have to miss those matches, including the Evil Leeds clash with Watford.
Great run from Ben Arfa there and then he nearly played in Ba.
Shane Long goes down in the D, but Chris Foy waves play on.
I wish you the best with your conference. That is consecutive conference Saturdays for the LOBers.Where is the conference?
Shen Long elbows Long on the back of the head and I am surprised he has not been booked.
He actually has been deservedly booked.
Ridgewell shoots high and wide from a poor free taken by Chris Brunt.
Cheers, mate. I'll be presenting a paper on my human rights pedagogy research. It's for our College of Education Spring Symposium here on campus.
Cabaye shoots from a free kick from about thirty yards out and as I type Paul Scharner is on for Mulumbu.
It sounds rather interesting. How did your meeting go on Tuesday evening?
Now Newcastle counter with a sub as Shola Ameobi is on for Ben Arfa. An odd substitution as Newcastle go with three strikers when they are 1-3 up on the road midway through the second half.
Oh - it was wonderful, thanks. We got about 100 people out for the movie and I did a brief introduction and then hosted a panel discussion of local teachers Oprah style afterward. Lots of kudos the next day from the right people. A feather in my cap here.
Now Cisse is down again. He should be subbed if he keeps going down as Newcastle have one substitution remaining.
Shane Ferguson will come on for Cisse as Newcastle as ech team has brought on a Shane as a sub.
This is bad news for Alan Pardew - two goal man Cisse is being stretchered off.
CONGRATULATIONS!!! WELL DONE,BD!A DESERVED SUCCESS.
Neither Cisse lasted the full ninety minutes this weekend, but for different reasons.
Now James Morrison is down thanks to a hefty challenge form Demba Ba.
West Brom have made all three changes, so they will have to play the remainder of the match with ten men if Morrison does not recover.
It was actually Brunt and he seems to be okay after that knock.
No it is Morrison. Brunt was out for a water break.Morrison seems to have broken his ankle , so the Baggies will play the remainder of the match with ten men.
Now Ridgewell is down holding his head and Woy is lecturing the fourth official. If he doesn't recover, the Baggies will be down to nine men!
Thankfully , Ridgewell will be able to continue.
Useless cross by Scharner after great work by Shane Long and Peter Odemwingie.
Shane Ferguson wins a corner off of Billy Jones from a great run.
Some head tennis in the box off a short Toon corner that is stopped due to offside.
That should be a cracker next weekend between Newcastle and Liverpool. Pool will be desperate for a win - they're 8 points back.
I agree. That is the early match next Sunday. Craig Burley says Kenny is under pressure. I disagree.
Wow - 7 minutes of stoppage time!
SEVEN MINUTES of stoppage time.
I can't imagine them sacking King Kenny now.
Chris Brunt has a shot deflected for a corner.
Perch heads out for another corner that is taken short.
Perch heads out for another corner that is taken short.
I'll be off the office, sadly, to catch up on some work after this one ends.
I agree, BD. I don't see that happening to Kenny.
I will be catching up on grading after the match due to that trip to Austin. A busy afternoon for both of us.
Perch heads out a cross from Ridgewell for a corner.
The corner from Brunt is headed off the corner flag for a West Brom throw
Indeed - teachers have it easy, eh? ;-}
Whoever says that has never been in education.
True.
Chris Foy blows the final whistle and the Oranges win 1-3 at the Hawthorns
Full-time: It was really over at Newcastle claimed a 0-3 lead inside the first 40 minutes. The Baggies got one back but they were never really in it in truth. Newcastle threatening Chelski's 5th spot now.
Cheerio, mate. Happy grading!
It should be an interesting battle between Spurs, Chelsea , and Newcastle.
Cheers BD. Have fun with the paperwork.
