The Big Ones!
It's been a bit quiet around the LOB home front recently, which I can only think is because we've all been anticipating a quite epic day of blogging today. It all starts at 2:45 on GolTV with England's crucial away tie with Ukraine. A win there and England can start buying their sunscreen for the Copacabana trip. Then later on we've got the US v. Mexico from Columbus. Again - a win assures US qualification (and puts Mexico in a right pickle!). Drop on by for a natter, eh?

Home at the Cottage after my morning teaching and getting set to watch the first half of the big one this afternoon. I'll need to pedal off to class at half-time, sadly.
Here's the England team for this afternoon's clash and it's a fascinating selection from Woy, keeping in mind that Roon, Welly and Sturridge are all unavailable.
Hart, Walker, Cole, Gerrard (c), Cahill, Jags, Theo, Lamps, Lambert, Wilshere, Milner.
Subs - Defoe, Young, Sterling, Townsend, Fraser, Smalling, Ruddy, Baines, Caulker, Carrick, Clev, Barkley.
It'll be interesting to see how England set up then. I suspect that it'll be Ricky Lambert alone up front but it might also include a more central attacking role for Theo, with LUFC Academy bringing the width down the left side. Wilshere and Lamps will bring the attacking creativity through the middle of midfield and Gerrard will be the holding middie.
In some earlier action, Russia have put Israel to the sword 3-1 today to put more pressure on the brittle Portugeezers who don't play today. Luxembourg and Norn Ireland have just kicked off.
In the match that just ended on GolTV, Sweden have won again, away to Borat's lads 0-1. They're now in pole position to pip Austria and the Republic for that second qualifying spot in Group C. Those two sides meet today in a titanic clash.
Come on, GolTV - get the preview going. They're still advertising the match but no coverage yet.
Hey Boys
My day at school is just ending
I actually have a damn faculty meeting so I won't even be able to listen to the radio. After the meeting, I am rushing off to Matt's game!
COME ON ENGURLUND!!
Finally - it's 2:40 and the coverage has started. It's distinctly C team stuff though with some random gringo with a slight accent doing the announcing. It's as if some intern wandered into the studio in New Jersey and picked up the mic.
Heya, Dave - are you at least sporting your red England kit at the tedious faculty meeting?
I can't do that!!!
Never wear the team colors when they're playing!
Have they started yet?
I have to leave now!
Alright, that's a bit better. It's an English voice commentating. England about to kick off in red. Come on!
Just starting now - I'm wearing the red.
Oh dear - a shaky moment there with Hart diving in on the Ukrainian striker. I thought the ref might blow for a pen but fortunately he's given a corner. Steady, lads.
Ukraine clearly trying to punk England early and we'll have to weather the storm for a bit.
Stevie G. did well to win the ball back in midfield and relieve the pressure for a moment.
Oh - sweet hit from distance from Gerrard but a decent height for the Ukraine keeper to grab.
Oh - now it's Theo who got behind the defense and nearly scored an early one. The keeper was taken out by his own man.
For a fixture that usually doesn't produce many goals, this one has started as if fired out a cannon.
Now - Cahill has a free header but puts it over. Another corner. And yet another. Three in quick succession for England. Good stuff.
Good pressure from England. Theo has switched sides and doing damage down the left side now.
Goalkeeper Piatov is still feeling that shoulder gingerly after the clash with his own man.
Hart looks really jittery as if he's really feeling the pressure.
Oh - Lambert had a chance there but he didn't react quickly enough. Corner.
Oh - Cashley was out of position and Gerrard missed his defensive header. Ukraine might have scored there.
More desperate defending by England there, Cahill clearly as the left winger got behind Milner.
This one has the crackling atmosphere of a good Cup tie but it's making me really nervous.
Nearly a quarter of an hour in and we could have had a hat-full of goals already.
Gerrard can pump a free kick into the box now. We could use a cheap one. Punched out.
Another free kick now, from a slightly better position won by Jack.
A left footer might try a shot from this range but Gerrard is over it. Swung in and Jags wins another corner.
Ukraine corner now - end to end stuff, not great on the dodgy ticker, this match.
A definitive answer to the earlier question. Lambert was the only player not back defending that last corner. He's up alone.
Milner instead of providing more width, is dropping in as another defensive middle.
A bit of a lull in the match now - that'll suit England.
Ukraine crowd now going into an "Ole" shout at every touch - steady on, lads. It's still 0-0.
Big Mert has put Germany 0-1 up over the Faroes.
Woy looking a wee bit pensive now.
Inswinging cross by the right=footed Milner - always going to be a keeper's ball. I don't get playing him there. He's never going to whip a cross over with his left peg.
Half an hour in and you'd have to say that 0-0 is an absurd scoreline given what we've seen. Not bad for England but it's been shaky stuff.
Oh - Gerrard tried a curler there from distance. Why not?
Oh - Jack nearly played Theo through there. Theo is definitely the danger man for England so far. They can't handle his pace.
Lambert is already looking leggy and lumbering.
Poland are at 1-3 with San Marino at the moment.
Cahill can launch a free kick into the Ukraine box now - ponderous.
Lambert looks really exposed today for what he is - a journeyman striker at the end of his career.
Oh - Zazulia was nearly in but Jags did well holding him off so that Hart could collect.
Coming down to the last waning moment of the first half - still 0-0. That will suit Woy.
England have a late chance now as Jack is hacked down from behind. I'd like to see a Leighton Baines have a go at one like this.
Lamps over it...deflected out for an England corner.
Peep peep - the half-time whistle comes and England will be cautiously happy with a 0-0 scoreline.
I'm off to work and will be wearing the lucky red shirt while teaching.
Hello Bob. I'm here for a natter just back from Open House at Jacquelyn's school.
It's 0-0 at the half from Columbus and it's also 0-0 at the half between Jamaica and Costa Rica
Hiya, MUR - I just got home from class. Looks like it was a fairly uninspiring first half.
GOAL! Eddie Johnson scores a gigantic header from Landy's corner!
1-0 US!
Double T is talking about "setting picks" in the box. What on earth is he talking about - that's basketball talk. It's called "obstruction" in football.
GOAL !!!! 1-0 U.S. AS EJ HEADS IN A CORNER AS CORONA, THE MEXICAN KEEPER, WAS COMPLETELY OUT OF POSITION.
The US will qualify for Brasil 2014 if they win and Panama fail to win tonight.
At the same time, this result would put Mexico in a right pickle.
Hello Bob. Welcome back. It was a dull first half. The U.S. can qualify for Brazil with a win and a a Panama loss.
I agree with you, mate. Corona looked poor on that EJ goal.
The new Mexico manager is having kittens over in the technical area now.
It sure will . I will be back and forth as I am also helping Melanie with Geometry homework.
It was about bloody time that they sacked Chepo De La Torre.
My friend with Jordan is on cloud nine as they played Uzbekistan in a two legged playoff and won 9-8 on penalties. They will play the fifth placed South American team in a two legged playoff in November. Either way his small birth country has had a tremendous run.
Good on you, mate. You are the Super Math-Dad.
Ta, Bob. I try. I was also the open house dad at Jacquelyn's school just before this match started.
Yeah - right now it looks like that might be either Ecuador or Uruguay. Tough one.
Well in! I love an Open House.
I'll bet you could teach me some bloody Geometry. I was hopeless in high school.
My friend doesn't expect much from that , but is proud of Jordan for getting this far.
Looks like Mexico are rolling the dice one last time. Jorge Peralta to come on.
Absolutely - it's a terrific achievement.
We finished just in time at the Open House. I will teach you Geometry any time you would like. Ms. Dear was my Geometry teacher.
Jamaica and CR are at 0-0 in the 70th minute. They would also qualify tonight with a win.
She was mine too for Algebra and Geometry. She was great but I had no natural affinity for the subjects as you obviously do.
Mexico look totally out of ideas. I've never seen a worse Mexican side.
Wahay - Honduras have scored against Panama. The US would qualify in about 20 minutes if scores stay the same.
As things stand , the U.S are top of the pops and about to clinch a place in Brazil.
Actually , Honduras vs Panama kicked off an hour later than this match, so we won't know until an hour after this match ends.
It could prove costly for Mexico as Carlos Costly gives Honduras the lead vs Mexico. Also , Costa Rica have taken the lead in Jamaica. The Ticos back on top and would also clinch a spot in Brazil if the scores stand.
Mexico look set to stay in a playoff spot and may play New Zealand in a two legged playoff in November.
Jurgen looking really happy and why not.
Diskerud on for EJ , who had a blow to the head a few minutes earlier.
Mexico is fortunate that Panama is also losing.
GOAL! Landy at the back post makes it 2-0!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!
LANDY PUTS THE U.S TWO UP WITH A TAP IN. THE CROSS CAME FROM DISKERUD SECONDS AFTER COMING ON FOR EJ.
I really like this Diskerud kid - he should be a shoe-in for the US squad come next summer.
As things stand, Mexico is five points behind third place Honduras and the best they can hope for is to pip Panama for a playoff spot and hope to defeat the Kiwis in a playoff.
Looks like CR and the US will both clinch WC qualifying tonight.
I would think that he would for sure.
That's easier said than done - on current form, I'd have to favor the Kiwis.
I think they will and Honduras will be one win away from qualifying if they win tonight.
I agree 100%. The Kiwis are definitely not a pushover. Mexico probably would have preferred a playoff vs Jordan.
The U.S. and Cr. will not clinch their place until an hour after this match ends because Honduras vs Panama kicked off an hour later than this match
Engerlund are in a great position to qualify with two winnable home matches remaining. They have only themselves to blame if they do not qualify
Holland and Italy qualified for Brazil. Jamaiaca have tied it up vs CR in stoppage time. Will CR qualify with a draw
The Argies take the lead in Paraguay and will qualify with a win tonight/
We can no longer call San Marino , San Marino Nil as they scored vs Poland despite losing 1-5.
Jamaica vs CR has finished 1-1.
Should be a doddle tonight for England now, as we've got superior goal difference to Ukraine and Montenegro. Just need to win the last two.
Stoppage time in Columbus
Jamaica have equalized and CR now drop to second place behind the US. Loverly.
CR qualify if Panama lose , but the U.S are now top of the pops.
Yes - Jamaica and the Ticos have drawn. That's an excellent result for us.
Honduras lead Panama 1-0 at the half.
Good solid result for the US - humiliating for El Tri.
Bloody hell - it's a penalty right at the death!
LOVELY !!!! CLINT WINS A PEN AND AS IAN STATED, THE U.S. HAVE A CHANCE TO RUB IT IN!
Dempsey to take....
And a terrible miss! After the one the other night and this one - he shouldn't be taking any more.
CRIKEY . CLINT SHOOTS IT WIDE. It doesn't matter as the U.S. win 2-0.
2-0 in the end and it could have been worse on El Tri. Chicarito looks really despondent.
That's it for me, mate. Great chatting with you.
Cheerio!
We will discover in about an hour if the U.S. have clinched a World Cup spot.
Cheers mate. Great chatting with you. I look forward to chatting on Saturday.
