The Post-Thanksgiving Footie Feast
Now that we've all recovered from our turkey-induced comas, it's time for some serious feasting again, this time on some Premiership footie. We start with a fascinating encounter between an Arsenal trying to bounce back from their loss to United last weekend and a WBA side that includes young Saido Berahino who has revealed an October DUI arrest to his club. And that's just the start of things to come - join me for the usual LOB banter.
454 Comments:
Good morning, Bob. It's great to join you. I'm up early for the first time since Tuesday.
I'm watching Charlton vs Ipswich on BEIN.
Morning, MUR - how was your Turkey Day?
How has that match been so far? I'm sticking with the pre-match coverage on NBC SN.
Turkey Day went very well. How was yours. I hope you, Kate, and Phoebe stayed nice and warm.
It's 0-0 in sunny London. Charlton dominating so far.
We had a terrific time on Thursday and then did some Black Friday shopping yesterday after dropping Phoebe off at the airport.
Here are the teams lining up in the tunnel now:
West Brom - Foster; Wisdom, Lescott, Dawson, Pocognoli; Gardner, Mulumbu, Brunt, Dorrans; Sessegnon; Berahino. Subs: Myhill, McAuley, Gamboa, Baird, Anichebe, Ideye, Samaras.
Arsenal - Martinez; Chambers, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Monreal; Flamini, Ramsey; Welbeck, Alexis, Cazorla; Giroud. Subs: Macey, Gibbs, Bellerin, Rosicky, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Campbell, Podolski.
Referee: Chris Foy.
We boycotted Black Friday as you may have seen from our pictures on FB. I hope there was not any trampling or fighting. I saw online that this behavior is now occurring in Blighty. The Greater Manchester Police were called to make some arrests at a Black Friday sale at Tescos.
Kos and Giroud back in the starting lineup. Seudio still not fit and Gibbs predictably benched for that.
Arsene Wenger didn't have the selection dilemma that Alan Irvine had this morning but he's made some interesting changes, including giving Emiliano Martinez his debut in goal. Koscielny is back in the heart of defense and Olivier Giroud gets a rare start up front.
No such problems for us, mate. I understand the boycott notion but we rarely get up to Buffalo and had to take advantage.
The Gooner and dad will not like your photo. I think it's brilliant. They must be watching during brekkies.
And we're away at the Hawthorns.
They're off from the Hawthorns.
Emil;iano Martinez actually made his debut as a sub vs United and played vs Dortmund , but his first start in the Prem.
Add the comments made by Mulumbu last week, publically criticizing Alan Irvine for not picking him and all is not rosy at the NAthaniel Hawthornes.
Thanks, mate. Cazorla tries an early pop. Easily held by Ben Foster.
Caz straight at Foster
I have both matches on . Still 0-0 at the Valley about a half hour in, but end to end stuff despite that
I actually have a lot of respect for Alan Irvine. He doesn't have a lot to work with and mid-table is a decent spot for the Baggies. He handled the Berahino story with grace this week.
BLOODY HELL! Alan Irvine starts Mulumbu for the first time in ages after that attitude. Why start him. The team are in a decent run of form compared to other teams.
First chance for Alexis to stretch his legs and he drives toward Foster.
Alexis straight at Foster or as Breahinho would think; Foster Brooks!
I agree with you about Alan Irvine. I like him too. He is discovering that players will test you.
I agree with you about Alan Irvine. I like him too. He is discovering that players will test you.
Oh - good defending by Chambers and Koz at the heart of the Arse defense keeps WBA at bay, but the Baggies are controlling things so far.
You're right on top of the puns from the off this morning - well done, mate!
Someone discovered my punditry when I replied to his FB post about Everton's EL POST.
Nice tribute to Jeff Astle there.
A moment's applause for Jeff Astle and David Pleat mentioned playing against him in the Nottingham Derby.
What happened in Aussie cricket this week? The commentator just hinting at it.
Great block by Craig Dawson from Caz.
I'm not sure . UWS would know.
Talk about injuries. Nacho is hobbling and Gibbs is warming up. BEWARE, Emilio Martinez.
It didn't look like much of a challenge on Dorrans , who was sniffing out some nachos.
I've just looked it up - Phillip Hughes, an up and coming Aussie cricketer died of injuries sustained after having been struck by a ball. I did catch that briefly on the news - terrible story.
It's clear that Gibbsy had been dropped after too many mistakes this season. Now he'll be thrust back in at the deep end. Watch up, Martinez, indeed.
I have both matches on at the same time and it's hard to distinguish the two because Charlton's kit looks just like Arsenal's
Thanks for the update. I had not heard about that. That is a tragic story indeed and shows that the players do risk their life playing cricket since they don't wear a helmet.
I can imagine. Got to be close to half time in that one, no?
Coq Au Vin is in action for Charlton? Do you remember him? The Gonner is trying to forget about him.
Oh - Welly got around the back of the WBA defense but Norman Wisdom did well to get back and "it all turned out very well!"
The half just ended and it's 0-0 an entertaining match. Charlton were the better team, but the Tractor Boys came into the match the last fifteen minutes of the half.
I do remember him - is he on loan or did Arsenal shed him?
BOOM BOOM . Wisdom, but none too wise!
I would need to do a wiki to check that one out. Good question.
Dawson is off with a nosebleed while WBA are defending a free kick now. Lescott deals with it well.
Cheers, mate!
He's on loan from the Gunners. Two others on Charlton include the Gooch and Tal Ben Haim.
Finally Monreal trudges off and is replaced by Gibbs.
Gibbs is on for the injured Nacho. I hope the Gunners third choice keeper is warming up.
Gardner upends Giroud and Arsenal have a great chance now. A bit soft.
I agree with David Pleat. That didn't look a foul by Mulumbu on Giroud.
Alexis steps up and drills one into the wall. A waste.
And then Foster saves well from Welly!
Into the wall by Sanchez, but given away by Pocognoli then a great save by Foster from Wellie.
Pleat now saying some glowing things about his new love Ben Foster.
I answered your question and then some about Coq Au Vin. Cheers!
Someone was unwillingly involved in my punditry on Thanksgiving on FB as his Toffees were away to Wolfsburg in the EL>
Commentator's curse there - just after being praised, Ben Foster gives away a suicidal clearance straight to Giroud, who wastes it.
The commentator's curse as Foster got tackled by Giroud who shot wide from a very narrow angle.
You did some fine anoraking as usual, mate. Thanks!
Some more Charlton info . Their away colors are gray shirts with charcoal gray sleeves and charcoal shorts . Third choice is amber shirts with yellow sleeves and yellow shorts. Your thoughts?
Cheers mate!
I told Someone on FB that I hope his Toffees drive like a VW to victory and that they drop the opposition like a sack of potatoes on Sunday.
Comfortable save by Foster from Wellie.
This match needs a goal desperately.
The Gunners have a free kick. The free kick from Caz is headed by Lescott back to Foster.
That would be satisfying, especially to the Gooner, who hasn't responded to my texts yet. I wonder if he overslept?
Another home draw for the Baggies. Both teams drawing blanks so far.
I thought he would be with your dad watching. Surely that photo of the Baggies flag is there to irk him!
I can see WBA just about getting enough points to stay up.
Three minutes into the second half and an interesting stat from the American announcer, who uses a ratio to describe the number of shots on goal. He says Charlton have outshot Ipswich at a 2 yo 1 clip. I don't care for that at all.
The early ones are more difficult for the two of them to watch together as Dad likes to hold court in the breakfast room at his place.
Curled just wide by Tyrone Mings, who nearly gave the Tractor Boys the lead.
Sounds like an Americanized commentary track there. I'm glad to have this one on, despite the dirty old man Pleat.
I see. Surely, he could watch in the living room or basement unless he's recording the match. He will be irked at the photo.
Not sure - maybe he's given up on Arsene.
I agree. I have the Prem match as the main one. I switched over briefly to look at the clock . Pleat has been on his best behavior today.
I don't think so. He told me he was cook a hoop after the victory over Dortmund. They're in the knockout stages, so that has bought Arsene some time.
We've got an exceedingly tough fixture today, at home to table topping Derby. I don't expect much from it. And another loss could easily drop us perilously close to the dropzone.
I just looked out the window and have seen that the early morning fog has lifted and it looks set to be another lovely day, Indian summer yesterday and more of the same the rest of the weekend.
I was thinking about that . It will definitely be a toughie as the Rams lock horns with your Whites!
It was a good win for the Gunners; however, they can't reasonably expect to win the CL. And qualifying for next year's competition is looking increasingly remote.
Snow on the ground here but not a lot of it. Very cold here this weekend.
We have consecutive matches at OT vs teams managed by former United players. we should win both. we face The toothless Tigers today and Stoke on Tuesday. Both on MSNBC.
Stoppage time, then. Neither side will be especially satisfied with that goalless first half but Albion might be the slightly happier.
Halftime and 0-0 at the Nathaniel Hawthorns as it is currently at the Valley.
I would think Albion will be content. I expect them to me mid table this year, especially if they can turn those home draws to victories.
Hey boys,
Sorry I have been bit of a no show as of late.
I'm afraid it is going to happen today as well.
I have been asked by a friend to entertain his soon to be son-in-law. There is the bridal shower today and he didn't really know what to do with him. He is Chilean and loves footer so he asked me to join him. We are going to the new Biergarten opened in Schenectady... we actually have a soccer bar in town
I have such great memories of Summers in DC that weekend
Good morning UWS. You will be missed. I was at a Biergarten with Gooner in DC . It should be a great day. How was your Thanksgiving?
The match at the Valley desperately needs a goal too as Daryl Murphy shot just wide for the Tractor Boys.
A great Charlton counter and UWS will not be pleased that it was wasted as the striker took too long to shoot and by the time he shot he had three defenders back so that the shot was blocked.
Ping Pong action in the Charlton box off a free kick from Stephen Hunt and a snap shot from McGoldrick was straight at the keeper then at the other end a last ditch clearance off a charlton cross as the Ipswich defense was caught out.
WBA get us started in this second period.
The second half is underway from the Nathaniel Hawthorns.
Did you see that UWS chipped in with a comment. He will be entertaining a new Biergarten in Schenectady. I presume it will be indoors.
AN all Irish swap for the Tractor Boys as Connor Salmon is on for Stephen Hunt. It sounds a little fishy!
Fishy indeed, no goals yet in either match. It's a goal drought this morning.
so far. Hopefully United can end that as the fizz has gone out of both matches.
Arsene is watching his team run into a cul-de-sac as Ramsey has a shot blocked.
Dorrans booked for a shirt pull on Gibbs.Foster drops a free kick from Caz and shot well wide by Merte.
Berahino with a shot into the side netting when a pass was a much better option.
Great run by Gibbs ans a timely headed clearance by Dorrans then Baggies fans none too pleased as Merte clatters into Berahino.
Arsenal trying to turn the screw now, mostly through Alexis.
Brunt has a cross deflected by Chambers for a corner as Martinez just fails to prevent it.
Merte heads away the corner by Dorrans then a long range effort from Dorrans is wide.,
GOAL! Welly breaks the deadlock!
GOAL !!! FIRST OF THE DAY AS WELLIE FIRES THE GUNNERS INTO THE LEAD.
In the end it was a very un-Arsenal like goal, with Caz racing down to the by-line and chipping one up on a plate for Welly to attack with his head.
0-1 Gunners!
Time for some more puns !!!! Cometh the hour cometh the man or at least a dozen seconds early as Wellie heads in a cross from Caz, who made a great run down the left getting past wisdom who looked none too Wise !
An hour in and Alan Irvine needs to make some immediately changes.
Into stoppage time at the Valley and still 0-0.
He's about to make one as Anichebe is coming off the bench.
Did you see that I used two puns to explain one goal? Your thoughts?
An attacking move as Anichebe , a striker , on for Mulumbu, a middie , as Alan Irvine goes with two up front.
An injury in stoppage time and one that will please Bob as the match is stopped due to a nosebleed by Noel Hunt. Bob will want to forget him. Now I know why they call it injury time.
GOAL !!!!! THE TRACTOR BOYS HAVE WOM IT WITH A SUPER LATE GOAL BY NOEL HUNT ON HIS TRACTOR BOYS DEBUT AND WITHOUT A JERSEY NUMEBER
He has as It's 1-0 to the Tractor Boys at the Valley of the Shadow of Death. I'm sure Bob wishes Noel Hunt did more of that at ER.
A description of the goal. Jay Tabb won the ball in midfield. It broke to Connor Salmon, who passed to Tyrone Mings. He played a long diagonal ball down the right to McGoldrick. He cross was cut out and found an unmarked Noel Hunt who shot in the corner.
I wonder if Bob has fallen asleep on the magic sofa as it's 1-0 to the away teams so far.
Giroud wins a corner for the Gunners
One fullback for another for the Baggies as Cristian Gamboa, the Costa Rican international , is on for Poconnoli
The final roll of the dice for Alan Irvine as he know has three up front. Samaras is on for Sess, who gets a standing ovation. Some of the locals are not pleased with that change.
Ox on for Giroud , who is not pleased about being subbed, but he may not be quite fit to to last ninety minutes.
Nope - I'm still here, after enjoying a delicious bagel with Katie.
Sounds more entertaining than this match. Now come to life as Berahino now has a shot come off the bar.
Berahino was left with a free header off a superb cross from Gamboa seconds after a superb block by Merte,
I guess Arsene is looking for 1-0 to the Arsenal as it was for the Tractor Boys in the other match
Well, at least The Ox on for Giroud was a positive move.
Gamboa booked for a foul on wellie.
You may not want to read how the Tractor Boys won it late on. You will not be pleased.
Gooner is enjoying the many ways in which Pleat is pronouncing Anichebe's name.
Ox down injured and I'm not sure how as it was minimal contact by Samaras in the clash of subs. The last thing Gooners want to see.
Anxious moment now as The Ox is down holding his knee.
He should be enjoying the score too
The Ox trying to run it off now as he has no doubt noticing Sir Sometimes a Goal warming up.
The Tractor Boys won it late in stoppage time, but the sad part is that it was scored by another ER flop.
Arsenal trying to pass it around for the rest of the match now.
More like Sir Once in a While!
I did notice that - I hadn't realized that Noel Hunt had left Leeds. I'll have to mark him off my squad list.
George Graham Don Howe, and Terry Neill would be proud.
Sorry mate. It was on his debut. Your Whites are at Portman Road next Saturday. A tough stretch.
Four minutes of stoppage time as Craig Gardener nearly tied it up, but for a timely block by Ramsey.
Oh - Gardner nearly did the biz for the Baggies. Still on a knife's edge now, despite WBA fans leaving.
If goalscoring is a problem for the Baggies, why is Berahino in the England squad?
Martinez does well to gather a teasing cross from Samaras in traffic.
Into the four minutes of stoppage time.
Ben Foster up for the corner.
He is scoring, but other than him, who else is scoring for the Baggies? I think he's in because he get some in a team that rarely scores.
The Ox picks up a late, late yellow card for preventing another WBA attack.
Isn't Berahino up against his former mates. I think he's a product of the Arsenal Academy.
Steady defending so far, but the Baggies are packing the box.
That's it - Arsenal hang on for a good win for them. They're up to sixth now ahead of the 10am fixtures.
Chris Foy blows the final whistle and rolling back the years as it's 1-0 to the Arsenal
Berahino , a graduate of the Arsenal Academy , fails to score vs his former mates.
The televised 10 AM fixture is United vs the Tigers and yet another return to OT for Brucie , who has poor record on his visits as a gaffer. Long may that continue.
Stevie G is benched for Pool vs Stoke on the 16th anniversary of his Pool debut. Michael Carrick starting in the center of defense and Yashley out left for the injured Luke Shaw. He did have a decent match last Saturday
Since RVP is out of form then why not bench for him for young James Wilson?
Diame in place of Fatty for the Tigers . The correct decision by Brucie as the toothless Tigers are in a slump. I hope that continues today.
Th teams come out of the tunnel at OT.
United have nine consecutive wins vs the Tigers in all competitions. Let's make it ten.
Some results from yesterday:
In League one:
Table toppers, Bristol City won 0-3 at Young Fergie while the Evil Blades drew 1-1 vs Notts County.
In League Two Exeter made the long journey and won 2-3 at Accrington Stanley
They're off from OT!
COME ON MAN UNITED!
COME ON MAN UNITED!
COME ON MAN UNITED!
Di Maria wins a corner from the off.
Th Tigers clear the corner from RVP and United keep possession.
United playing a back four instead of LVG's beloved back three.
Di Maria leads a United break, but Jake Livermore is back to prevent a possible goal.
UWS will not be pleased that Tranmere have taken the lead vs Pompey or that the Real Dons do the same vs Cambridge. Bob will be pleased that Argyle Sweater have taken the lead vs Dick York.
I'm back after a natter with the Gooner, who's delighted with that win.
Here is the team news for this afternoon's affair:
Man Utd: De Gea, Smalling, Carrick, Rojo, Valencia, Mata,Fellaini, Di Maria, Young, van Persie, Rooney.
Subs: Falcao, Januzaj, Lindegaard, Ander Herrera, Fletcher, Blackett, McNair.
Hull: McGregor, Davies, Dawson, Chester, Elmohamady, Diame,
Livermore, Brady, Robertson, Ben Arfa, Jelavic.
Subs: Rosenior, Bruce, Meyler, Jakupovic, Aluko, Quinn, Huddlestone.
Referee: Anthony Taylor (Cheshire)
Roon cuts inside and shoots just wide . A decent effort.
welcome back mate!! Congratulations to the Gooner. A decent result as most teams leave there with a draw.
Cambiasso has fired Leicester into a 0-1 lead at hapless QPR.
WAY HAY! Cambiasso gives the Foxes the lead in a relegation six pointer at Loftus Road.
Rooney has scored!!!
For Queen's Park away to Clyde, that is.
DiMaria has gone off for treatment. Looks like it might be a hammy.
Bayern take the lead at Hertha,
That would be a huge loss for United. Not nice to tease me like that.
PNE take the lead at Yeovil
Ander Herrera come s off the bench as he is about to replace Di Maria. Just not the same.
Arbroath five up at Boness in the Scottish Cup. Dundee defeated Aberdeen 2-1 earlier in the same competition.
Herrera is now on for Di MAria.
Queen of the South take the lead vs Broara while St. Johnstone are two up vs Ross County early doors.
Brum take a surprise early lead vs Forest whole evil Cardiff take the lead at Watford.
Valencia has a cross headed out by Michael Dawson for a corner.
GOAL! One for the goal-line technology as Smalling scrambles one in from an acute angle.
1-0 United!
YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!
UNITED TAKE THE LEADAND IT'S SMALLING WITH A REAL SCRAPPY FINISH. THE TIGERS DIDN'T CLEAR THE CORNER, MCGREGOR PUSHED AWAY A HEADER FROM RVP THEN WHILE ON HIS ARSE, MCGREGOR PUSHED A SHOT FROM SMALLING MILLIMETERS OVER THE LINE BEFORE PUSHING IT OUT. THANK YOU FORO GOAL LINE TECHNOLOGY.
The Swans take the lead vs Palace.
Brum have taken the lead against Forest in that Midlands derby.
The Canaries take the lead vs the Reading Railroad.
The latest out of Harlingen :
Fred is moire interested in a chest rub than the late match vs Chelsea and Sparky just came in from barking at the neighbors.
The Reading Railroad tie it up at CR.
A free kick to the Tigers.
The free kick is headed to Michael Dawson and he volleys into the ground and straight to De Gea.
The Fake Dons take the lead vs Colchester and Port Vale due the same at the Gills.
1-1 at Norwich now.
Arbroath have won 0-5 at Boeness United in the Scottish Cup while Alloa take the lead vs Hibs
Partick thistle take lead vs Hamilton
Ander Herrera tries a pop and it's deflected out for a corner. Hull really poor so far.
