The "Barely Any Footie On Offer" Sunday
Morning, chaps - it's "Spring Forward" day in the United States, but the UK has yet to fix their clocks, so we're only four hours ahead of Blighty now for a couple of weeks. That means that today's Cup Quarterfinal between Liverpool and Blackburn begins at noon EST (11am CST). Make sure to tune for all the action with me.
145 Comments:
The footie is rather light on the ground today, with only one Cup match and a couple of Scottish Cup matches on offer.
The big news out of Blighty this morning concerns yesterday's bad tempered Brummie Cup Quarterfinal. Villa ended up 2-0 victors but the FA will be investigating the pitch invasion by Villa fans at the end. Baggies fans also shamed themselves by ripping seats up. Sounds like the bad old days.
The team news out of Anfield:
Pool - Mignolet, Johnson, Skrtel, Lovren, Markovic, Can, Henderson, Lallana, Coutinho, Sterling, Sturridge. Subs: Ward, Toure, Sakho, Moreno, Williams, Lambert, Balo
Blackburn - Eastwood, Henley, Baptiste, Kilgallon, Olsson, Marshall, Evans, Wiliamson, Conway, Cairney, Gestede. Subs: Steele, Spurr, Brown, Rhodes, Taylor, Henry, Lenihan.
In boring La Liga news, Lionel Messi scored his 32nd hat-trick of his Spanish league career in a 6-2 win over Rayo Vallacano. Luis Suarez scored a brace.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Good morning, Bob. I got a rare chance for some extra kip this morning. How about you?
Teams in the tunnel now at Anfield.
Same here, mate. Really enjoyed it. We were out late as usual last night.
I saw the last twenty minutes of that ill tempered match at Villa Park after I got back from tutoring. The two sendings off were ridiculous and I saw the pitch invasions. They started in about the 85th minute! I didn't see what the Baggies fans did. I think a lot of bans will need to be in effect.
Blackburn have a former LUFC Academy kid Matthew Kilgallon as their skipper today.
Definitely some FA action to come for those shenanigans at Villa Park yesterday.
I hope you and Kate had a great time. I stayed home as usual, but was busy tutoring, driving everyone around , and doing indoor and outdoor chores.
A bit of an evil Rovers side?
Silly Fox - the panel is talking over "You'll Never Walk Alone." They still haven't learned.
Sunnier in Merseyside than South Texas, but probably cooler than here.
They have no understanding for the nuances of the game. They need to experience the traditions and atmosphere to have any understanding.
They're off from Anfield.
Sunny here but no sign of that green stuff anywhere. We've had snow on the ground since the New Year.
And Liverpool get us started in this FA Cup Quarter Final.
Blackburn will have to snap into the tackles early doors to disrupt Liverpool's plan of action. The Reds have been in good form, led by Henderson, recently.
I saw that you are supposed to have a warming trend this week. You might see some by the end of your Spring Break.
I always hope that I can get my bike tooled up during Spring Break for the spring riding season.
YIKES!!!! Skrtel is out for the count after an awkward fall, going for the ball with Rudy Gestede.
BLOODY HELL!!!
Clash of heads there and Skrtel is in trouble.
I think you should within the next few weeks.
Looks like Toure is coming straight on - must be a bad injury for Skrtel.
Kolo Toure is about to come om for Skrtel.
Fans from both teams are visibly concerned and rightly so.
A standing ovation as Skrtel is stretchered off with a neck brace and appeared to be moving. Kolo is on in his place.
After nearly a ten minute delay, we're back on.
Play resumes . I am guessing that there will be eight minutes of stoppage time.,
I was hoping that we might have UWS around this morning. He was texting me about how nervous he was about tomorrow's clash.
Minnie misjudged the flight of the ball on a long free kick as he was staring into the sun . Fortunately for him , Getsede headed well wide./
That will be a tough clash. I actually don't blame him. It's third vs fourth.
Due to the time change and my schedule, I should be around for the final half hour of that match
It'll be tough for me to watch as I teach at 4:30 tomorrow. With the four hour time difference, I believe that kick-off time is 3:45pm, right? Might see a bit of the first half.
Sturridge did well to beat the offside trap off a nice through ball from Henderson, but the keeper was out ion a flash like Clint Eastwood to gather.
Yes. That is correct. That sounds like the correct plan based on your schedule.
Pool win a corner. The corner is cleared then Pool retain possession then Coutinho is whacked in the shin.
Now Coutinho is gimping about - this has been all-out war so far. Very little actual footie.
Lallana is tackled for a corner off pass from Markovic after great combo work with Can
Oh - Lallana had the first real half-chance. Kllgallon with a priceless challenge.
Sturridge is offside as Loveren headed on the corner from Henderson.
The KOP end wanted a penalty , but it was a fantastic tackle by the former LUFC Academy defender. Her learned well.
Bob will be proud of that tackle on Lallana.
Dundee United now have a chance to knock Celtic out of the Scots Cup. They're a goal up and Celtic are down to ten men after a penalty incident.
Great defending by Kolo on a Rovers counter, then Glen Johnson chests out a cross for a corner. That was nearly an OG.
Now this match sprung to life. A ball in looking for Gestede came off Johnson and could easily have gone in the near post.
The corner is headed away then the return cross is by Kolo.
I'm having trouble seeing the action on the far side of the pitch because of the sun. I wonder if it's having an effect on the players as well.
Then Kolo clears a cross from Marshall. Getstede heads on a long throw from Marshall, but this time Minnie catches the ball.
I'm having the same problem. I believe it is as the players haven't received much Vitamin D the past few months.
Some of the Liverpool passing has been sloppy the past few minutes. They are reminding me of United.
Marshall cut inside and crossed for Gestede , who was called for a foul on Sterling.
Coutinho makes room for himself for a left footed shot but it's bent well over.
Coutinho curls a left footed shot high and wide.
Oh - Conway was through after Gestede let it run on to him. Blasted well over.
OH!!!! Craig Conway should have given Rovers the lead as he shot over with just Mignolet to beat. Gestede laid off a pass to him .
Great combo work by the two former Cardiff City strikers.
Oh - Toure has the ball in the net but it's ruled offside - and rightly so.
Kolo Toure has a goal disallowed for offside off a free kick that was nicely headed on by Sturridge. The replay showed that it was the correct decision.
May have come off Gestede's hand as well - but nothing given. This match has livened up. And the crowd are loving it.
Kolo Toure seems to be playing as an auxiliary striker.
Liverpool have notched it up a gear. If they core first then it will be hard for Rovers to comeback.
Actually I've just noticed that Dundee Utd. also had a player sent off in the incident so it's 10 v. 10 there. But Dundee Utd are 1-0 up as the second half starts.
Crikey - I do believe that Dundee Utd are down to 9 now!
Yes - Paul Dixon got himself sent off for handball and Celtic have a chance from a penalty early in the second half.
Penalty saved!
I just checked . Spot on mate. It's ten against nine and Celtic have missed a penalty/. Dundee United are in the lead because they scored theirs!
Should be about 10 minutes of stoppage time to come.
Both Dundee United players taking an early bath are named Paul . Not very Pious?
And the two players - Paton and van Dyck were sent off for fighting. Sounds like the 70s. I can't remember the last time I saw a real fight and not just handbags on the pitch.
I think eight.
8 minutes of stoppage to come.
Emre Can picks up the first yellow card for hauling back Cairney as he burst forward.
Emre booked for pulling down Conway because that CAN NOT be allowed.
Is Gestede Belgian? Dutch?
I am correct . It's eight minutes of stoppage time.
Boom boom!
I think he's French
How about Lee Bowyer and Kieran Dyer , who were on the same team? That was an actual fight . I remember Norman Hunter and Frannie Lee.
He seems built for the Championship.
Hibs ,as expected , easily dispatched Berwick Rangers defeating them 4-0.
Yeah - and I was at Wembley with Gooner and Dad for the 1973 Charity Shield when Bremner and Keegan got sent off for a real fight and then ripped their shirts off in disgust. Classic moment.
Markovic wins a corner.
The last thing the Reds need is a an extra weekday evening replay at Ewood Park. Rogers will have to change things up. One striker up front is not working.
I think that was 1974 , but I remember seeing it on youtube and reading about it. I think Bremner started it.
Sturridge has a shot beaten away by Eastwood.
A powerful shot from Sturridge , rifled at the keeper was beaten away by Eastwood.
I'm off to the bog ahead of half-time and lunch.
Liverpool are out of Europe, but have a Monday night match in South Wales the week of the cup replays that would have to be rescheduled.
Cheers mate. Wishing you the best. See you in the second half.
it's 0-0 at the half at Anfield.
Celtic have taken advantage of their one man advantage as Leigh Griffiths, who missed a penalty earlier , has tied it up for Celtic.
The second half is underway from Anfield.
Back for the second half with a spot of lunch. Blackburn get us going.
Craig Conway wins a corner off of Emre Can after picking up a stray pass from Markovic in midfield. Minnie superbly tips over a header from Alex Baptiste off the corner. Rovers retain possession off the next corner. Both were taken by Craig Conway
Welcome back, mate. Glad you made room for lunch and that you are back to match fitness.
A great block by Alex Baptiste from, Sturridge then Coutinho is wasteful.
It's hard to believe that not a single first half goal has been scored in an FA Cip quarterfinal match this weekend and so far only two in total.
The latest on Martin Skrtel is that he seems to be recovering at the hospital.
Another big penalty appeal - Stevie G. felt that it should have been given.
Naughty by Craig Conway on Sterling as Balo is on for Markovic. Will Balo prove to be the trump card in an evenly balanced tie.
Oh - Toure with a header onto the Sunday Roast!
OH!!!! Kolo nearly gives Liverpool the lead off the free kick as his header grazes the outside of the post from five yards out.
An hour has been played and Liverpool's two best chances have been from Kolo Toure off free kicks! Pool have created little against a stubborn, well organized Rovers side.
A feisty Scottish Cup tie has ended all square as the final score is Dundee United 1 Celtic 1. Those two will have to go at it again at Celtic Park.
I see that that Scots Cup match ended up 1-1 in the with a 71st minute goal.
Dundee Utd squandered a big chance to knock out the holders in my view.
Sterling is visibly showing his and Liverpool's frustration after a fair tackle by Craig Conway.
A free kick chance for Liverpool just outside the box.Into the wall by Sturridge.
Dundee United were up against it once they were outnumbered ten to nine. Actually, I thought there was chance that Celtic would win it today due to their one man advantage.
Chris Taylor is coming on for Blackburn to mix things up a bit. Marshall trudging off.
Chris Taylor is on for Ben Marshall.
If this tie ends up going to a replay then the big question will be whether the replay will be before the international break or right after the international break in early April.
Only two Fa Cup quarterfinal goals have been scored this weekend , both by English players.
I'm feeling a trifle goal-starved from this weekend - you?
The last thing Liverpool need as Kolo Toure, another central defender , appears to be injured as he hobbling.
Yes. I am definitely famished. This is definitely against FA Cup protocol.
Oh - bloody well - what was that from Sturridge?
Strange weekend - why not have a full Premiership schedule if only a handful of Prem sides are still in the Cup?
I agree. I think the Prem teams have been off the weekend of the Cup quarters the past few years. Is this to avoid the excuse of them fielding reserve teams due to the fact that the teams left in the Cup would have to make up a missed match in what could be a congested schedule? I think it's that as much as anything else.
I agree with Stewart Robson. Liverpool need to take risks. They need to start tot try to win this cup tie.
Craig Conway pulls down Balo. He's begging for a card.
Ball needs to come good here. Coutinho wastes a perfectly good free kick opportunity. Should be club fine.
An absolutely horrific free kick from Coutinho finds a lucky fan.
The replay showed that Alex Baptiste grabbed Balo's shirt in the box. I've seen those given.
Balo shoots straight at Eastwood as he makes the keeper's day, shooting blanks.
A poor cross from Lallana fails to find Sturridge.
Chris Taylor concedes a corner then Eastwood saves from Henderson as the rebound is cleared for another corner.
Coutinho is greedy off the next corner as a shot from a really narrow angle lands in the side netting as a cross was a much better option.
Coutinho tries one from an impossibly acute angle. Another waste. Not sure why Stewart Robson is full of praise.
Liverpool have about ten minutes to avoid a replay, which will not help their league campaign one bit.
Liverpool are scheduled to be away to Swansea the Monday night of Spring Break. I guess a replay would have to be that Wednesday with the league match moved back to Saturday or Sunday. Your thoughts?
The Gunners are the last team that need an FA Cup replay. Their only option would be after the international break.
Cairney is booked for a foul on Balo. it was a bit naughty.
Ball got clipped there by Cairney who gets a booking.
Balo has been bloody useless.
Nearly into stoppage time. It hasn't been a classic.
Into stoppage time. One Minute? That's it?
As it stands, only Villa are into a Wembley semi final. We'll need smelling salts to get us through the Reading v. Bradford replay.
That's that - on to a really unnecessary replay for Reds. Rogers doesn't look happy.
It's over at Anfield and Pool have been held 0-0 by Rovers. A replay will be at Ewood Park. Your guess for the date is as good as mine.
Rodgers should be. Rovers deserved their draw. The Reds came out of this match with very little credit.
I'm off to the shower, mate. Have a great week. Cheerio!
cheers mate. You too. It was great chatting with you.
