Footie Trivia of the Week
As we enter our first interminable International Break of the season, I thought it might be fun to tackle another brain teaser, this time European Championship themed.
"In the 55 year history of the European Nation's Cup (now the UEFA European Championship or simply Euro), there have been 32 competing nations from across Europe:
1. Two sides have competed a record nine times; three sides have competed eight times - name those five sides.
2. Name the five nations that no longer exist that have competed in the tournament.
3. Which European nations have never competed in the European Championships?
Good luck, folks!
11 Comments:
USSR, Czechoslavakia, and Yugoslavia don't exist any more.
Northern Ireland, Wales, Malta, and trick question, Coventry City have never competed
LOL! Well in, Gooner. You just made me spit up my morning cuppa.
Correct on USSR, Czechoslovakia and Yugo as three that no longer exist - what about the other two, you lot?
Also correct on Norn Ireland, Wales and Malta never having competed; however, with the tournament expanding to 24 sides in 2016, there is renewed hope for the minnows.
West Germany and East Germany are the other two nations that don't exist that competed
Albania, Finland, Iceland, Cyprus, Israel, The Faroes, Belarus, San Marino, Luxembourg,Liechtenstein, Slovakia, Bosnia, Belarus, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Gibraltar, and Andorra have never competed in the final stages of the Euros.
Italy, England, Spain, Holland , and France are the five nations that have competed eight or nine times.
Well done, MUR. You got the five nations who have competed the most number of times.
You also got a load of the minnows who have never competed. I wonder if any of them will make Euro 2016.
And you got West Germany. However, while the East Germans did compete in the World Cup, they never made the Euros. There is still one more nation that doesn't exist that's out there.
I forgot that Georgia has not competed either. It is a country and a state in our country.
Also, Lithuania and Estonia have never made the Euros.
The CIS no longer exists, but competed at the 1992 Euros. Is that the elusive fifth nation?
That's the one mate - it was the only tournament that the Confederation of Independent States ever competed in before being disbanded.
