This should be a fascinating encounter between two perennial big clubs. Here's the team news out of the Emirates:
Arsenal: Cech, Bellerin, Chambers, Gabriel, Monreal, Coquelin, Ramsey, Ozil, Cazorla, Sanchez, Giroud.
Subs: Debuchy, Gibbs, Arteta, Ospina, Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Flamini.
Liverpool: Mignolet, Can, Lovren, Skrtel, Clyne, Milner, Coutinho, Lucas, Gomez, Firmino, Benteke.
Subs: Sakho, Moreno, Origi, Ings, Ibe, Bogdan, Rossiter.
Referee: Michael Oliver (Northumberland).
Arsenal start tonight in 13th, with three points from two matches. Liverpool are in 5th, which two wins on the trot. They have a chance of extending a perfect record with what would be a significant away win against a title contender.
We're off at the Emirates. The Guardian blog is having a lot of fun with the existence of a lot of those horrible split scarves in attendance tonight, indicating that this is not a regular group of punters at the Em.
Liverpool so unlucky! Milner feeds Benteke down the right. Benteke bombs into the area and pulls the ball back for Coutinho, who rattles the crossbar from the edge of the area while looking for the top-right corner. Such a wonderful effort, and a very pretty flowing move from Liverpool. Arsenal haven’t got going yet at all.
This continues to be wide open, with both teams going for it. Neither defence looks particularly enamoured with the way it’s panning out tactically, it should be said.
Good afternoon, Bob. I am relieved to have basically made it through another first day of school. How have you been?
Good work down the right by Clyne, and it’s another corner for Liverpool. The ball’s hung up for Benteke, who loses an aerial duel with Cech. It’s Liverpool who are threatening early on. But then they should have taken the lead here last season, too, and look how that panned out.
Almost half an hour in and still 0-0 at The EM
Afternoon, MUR - it's been a crazy day here and I'm just hanging on for dear life. But enjoying this match - it's been absorbing so far.
As you stated, both teams are attacking without really making the breakthrough.
Benteke bullies Chambers down the inside-right channel, and nearly busts into the Arsenal area. Coquelin and Gabriel come to the rescue.
I'm delighted to be joining you after spending the day reviewing rules and regulations. I have to do it all over tomorrow since we are on an A/B block schedule. I hope you go back to a feeling of normalcy after today
Agreed - but Liverpool look the more likely. Benteke has been a real handful for the Arsenal backfour.
The first day is always a madhouse with disorganized students trying to change their schedules at the eleventh hour.
More good work down the right by Clyne , but a great cross is met with a poor header by Beneteke.
Hopefully the dust is all settled by tomorrow. We had some of that early this morning, but everything seemed pretty settled by the afternoon.
OH!!! Beneteke should have scored , but Cech did well to block a close range effort that's out for a corner.
The corner was not properly headed away and Cech blocked another close range effort. The next corner is short and Firmino shoots high and wide Arsene is livid.
Lucas concedes a cheap free kick.
The free kick from the Beaker is easily caught by Mignolet.
Liverpool should easily be one up if not two up. Arsene will have to rattle the teacups at half time.
Young Joe Gomez has been a threat down the left as he laid a chance on a plate for Beneteke.
The home support is not especially pleased.
Agreed. Arsene will give them the hairdryer treatment, and if not him then the Gooner.
OH!!! Off the post by Coutinho. A great curling effort. Liverpool can count themselves unlucky not to be in the lead.
A minute of stoppage time
It's 0-0 at the half, but Liverpool have dominated and really should be ahead. It's Cech for the Gunners , but not Cech mate, mate.
Not sure how this one is still at 0-0. Arsenal had one ruled out, while Coutinho hit the frame twice and Benteke missed a sitter. Great match, though.
The teams are out and Arsene looks as if he's read his players the riot act. The second half is underway.
The Gunners have somehow kept Liverpool in Cech
Giroud has a shot blocked for a corner off a pass from Alexis . The corner is headed away
Boom boom! Nice one, mate.
Nacho wins a corner.
Cheers mate
The corner is headed away as the Gunners keep possession.
It's not often that Arsenal are outplayed in the Premiership, but this is certainly one of those occasions. I've picked Arsenal for the title but I'm not confident about that choice now. They haven't looked good yet this season. I won't be changing my picks but I don't feel good about them.
I'm not feeling good about them either.I thinks it's more of the same from the Gunners. I think Liverpool are better than I originally predicted.
Benteke looks to burn off Bellerin down the left, but his touch isn’t so great and Cech is able to come out to gather. This is shaping up to be another half of end-to-end entertainment.
Better from the Gunners as a pass from Ramsey deflected off of Alexis then Giroud volleyed wide.
It seems similar to the first half, but not as one sided. It should be an interesting second half.
Could well be. In any case, at almost the hour mark, Arsene should be considering a few changes. Alexis hasn't been at the races yet this season, and Giroud has been absolute rubbish. I'd have either Theo or The Ox on at this point - or possibly both?
That was odd - it almost seemed like Mignolet was time wasting. Surely they're not satisfied with a draw at this point? Arsenal a bit more on the front foot for a moment.
oH!!!Off the side of the post from Alexis from close range after a nice build up from the Gunners
More signs of life for the Gunners, eh?
Cech easily saves a long range effort from Coutinho that lacked pace.
Skrtel is booked for a clumsy bfoul on Alexis
Firmino is called for a foul on Alexis after a tussle between the two.
Jordan Ibe is on for Firmino
Milner fouls Ozil
First sub - Firmino, still not quite match sharp after his post Copa America break, is swapped for Ibe.
The home fans seem encouraged by the last few minutes
Loads of end to end action now - hard to call this one and perhaps a 0-0 is a fair result.
OH!!! Giroud failed to make contact from a nice pass by Ramsey that should have given the Gunners the lead.
A draw seems a fair result, but it seems more like a 5-5 match
Emre Can is booked for a foul from behind. Not nearly as graceful as the Can Can
OH!!!! Mignolet makes a Gordon Banks type save from Giroud. The best save of the season.
Milner shoots straight at Cech off a break started by Joe Gomez.
Mignolet does well to grab a curling effort from Ramsey
Theo is on for Giroud.
That's a good move, IMHO.
Some fifteen minutes left to break the deadlock. I don't see it happening.
Rossiter is on for Lucas, who trudges off slowly as if Liverpool seem to be content with getting a draw.
It's hard to say. One of these chances may eventually be sucked in.
Coq Au Vin clears a pass from Coutinho for a corner.Chambers heads out for another
The next corner is cleared as the Gunners attack and Joe Gomez is booked for a foul
I'll bet that Coutinho would go for a spot of Coq au Vin right about now.
Cech pushes away a powerful effort from Coutinho
He will if he scores a winner.
The Ox is on for Coq Au Vin as the Gunners search for a late winner.
I'm off home, mate - great chatting with you!
I wonder if Brendan will do the Can Can if Liverpool score a late winner.
Cheers mate . It was great chatting with you.Enjoy the rest of your day
Mignolet just about grabbed an effort from Ramsey, now Skrtel clears for a Gunners corner that is punched away then headed away, then shot wide by the Ox. Skrtel nearly put into his own goal that led to the corner.
High and wide by Caz
Chambers is down , holding his head as he got a stray elbow from Beneteke. He gets up as play resumes.
Alberto Moreno is on for Coutinho as Brendan is obviously content to settle for a draw.
Great slide tackle by Skrtel to prevent a goal then Mignolet punches away a cross from Nacho.
Four minutes of stoppage time.
Alexis gave the ball away to Moreno, who ran the length of the pitch , but was stopped by a timely tackle as he was about to shoot.
Mignolet pushes a long range effort from Ox around the post.
The corner is headed away then Gabriel heads the return cross over as it finishes 0-0. It was entertaining despite the result.
That's it for me.
CHEERS!
