Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Burnley vs the Brummies is BEIN shown on the telly and it's 0-0 just a few minutes in
Morning, MUR - thanks for getting us started this morning. That's an excellent image for today.
The team news out of St. Mary's today:
Southampton: Stekelenburg, Cedric Soares, Yoshida, Fonte, Targett, Steven Davis, Wanyama, Tadic, Long, Mane, Pelle.
Subs: Romeu, Rodriguez, Martina, Ward-Prowse, Reed, Juanmi, Gazzaniga.
Everton: Howard, Coleman, Stones, Jagielka, Galloway, McCarthy, Barry, Kone, Barkley, Cleverley, Lukaku.
Subs: Robles, Mirallas, Naismith, Besic, Deulofeu, Osman, Browning.
Referee: Michael Oliver (Northumberland)
Good morning Bob. Thank you very much.
I go back to work on Monday , so I might as well get used to getting up early.
They're off from St. Mary's
Everton is wearing a bizarre away kit.
The Brummies take the lead at Turf Moor. Good news for me as they are one of my picks for promotion. Bad news for the bookies. HEE Hee !
Yeah, we start gearing up on Monday again.
Jon-Miguel Toral with the Brummies goal.
Mane wins a Saints corner.
First big call for referee Michael Oliver as The Chunk goes over just outside the box. Free kick - spot on.
The corner from Steven Davis is headed away by the first man then thew chunk sprints on a break and is fouled just ootside the box by Matt Targett and receives a yellow, not a red.
Barkley fires into the wall and out for a corner.
The free kick from Barkley is deflected for a corner.
Targett heads away the corner.
Kone wins another corner - The Toffees on the front foot early doors.
Kone has a shot blocked for another Toffees corner.
The next corner is far too high and heads out of play
Ronnie Koeman is back on crutches as his brother was in charge last Saturday
Did you see that Leeds is the early Championship match next Saturday?
I saw that; should be another BEin broadcast. Lovely.
Nice football from the Saints , but the angle was not on Mane's side as he shot harmlessly wide.
Morning boys
I am around this morning but not fully at the races. I will pop in when I can!
Busy getting ready for guest tonight
Busy getting ready for Hawaii next Friday
Busy getting fit.. have to do my five mile walk.
PS United suck
It's a Big Yorkshire Derby vs Not a Big Club. You should definitely be up for that one. You are at Ashton Gate on Wednesday. Definitely a tricky start for Uwe.
Morning, UWS - great to have you at least half on board. Sounds like you've got a busy morning - get crackin', mate.
Really annoys me that Everton are wearing green.... does blue shirts and white shorts clash with red and white stripes and black??
Good morning UWS. Bob and I go back to work on Monday while you will be in nice cool, Hawaii.
I'm a bit fearful about it after our not to special start to the season.
I referred to their away kit as bizarre.
Uwe needs to realize that more than a great hairdoo is required to be in charge at ER.
Agreed - he's got to pull his finger out.
LVG needs to watch this match as his compatriot and archnemesis has an entertaining side on show today.
Everton still enjoying the spoils of possession here.
Ozzy Osbourne told me to tell you that's a trip down the Crazy Rails tomorrow for Leeds. I don't think that's BEIN televised because the really early match is.
Watching SS... talking about yesterday's match... and the stonewall penalty Villa should have had. I agree.... Richards was wrapped around the neck by Darmian... don't know how ref didn't call it
The refs have to start stopping this
They did early doors , but the Saints have been in control the last few minutes.
I agree, UWS. I was surprised that Darmian wasn't called for the rugby tackle. Was it that horrible haircut by Micah Richards that cost him?
Mane has a shot blocked by Timmy for a corner off a nutmegged pass by Pelle after a back pass by Coleman lacked the mustartd.
GOAL! The Chunk nods home Everton's opener.
GOAL !!! THE CHUNK GIVES THE TOFFEES THE LEAD ON THE BREAK OFF THAT CORNER.
The GREENS score on a break from a Sotton corner
Wow, that's what happens hen you attack fast going forward and crossing the ball... are you watching LVG
Classic counterattacking goal there down the right hand side after a corner. Kone stood up a lovely ball and Lukaku merely guided the ball back across the goal into the corner.
0-1 Toffees
There was the LUFC influence there as Ross Barkley led the break off the Saints corner and found Kone down the right and his superb cross was superbly headed in by the Chunk at the far post. A textbook counter
Lukaku was my pick for top goalscorer two seasons ago, as I expected him to start for Chslski. He's never quite fulfilled his early promise at Everton. Perhaps this is his big season.
LVG should watch because he's calling his style a Dutch style , but Ronnie is Dutch and puts out an entertaining side. This is more like the Dutch style I'm used to seeing.
This is a critical season for him as he had a poor season last season. Someone must be delighted.
Looking at the list of Premiership fixtures, it's not the most impressive day, is it? No Chelski, no Citeh, no Arsenal, no Liverpool, and obviously no Arsenal.
Stecklenburg pushes out a near post effort from MccCArthy after he got too easily past Yoshida.
Correct. The better matches are tomorrow. Pool host the Cherries on Monday.
And no late match today. I think the top ones today are this match and the Hammers vs the Foxes, who both had big wins last week.
Everton should have doubled their lead there.. awful attempt by Barkley... England star of the future? Hit the ball straight at the keeper... still better than United. Three shots in 180 minutes. Both goals... off a defender
The Toffees nearly went two up as the Chunk superbly found Barkley , whose shot was well saved by Stecklenburg , then Not so Clever Boy shot the rebound wide when he should have scored.
I agree. I'm not too fond of watching one nil to the United. This Dutchman has a more entertaining side than out Dutchman's side.
Targett is off seeking treatment but looks to be able to continue.
The possession is Even Steven, but not the score.
As for me, while Kath and I are in Hawaii, I will miss three United matches
Newcastle at home
Club Brugges away
Swansea away
Will we have more than double figure shots in all of them combined
BTW, Kathy has told me I can't be so negative toward United. She's right but they aren't the United I love
Bob will be interested to hear that there are two Evil Championship fixtures, both BEIN televised.
Everton have moved into second spot behind United on 4 points now. Who is your pick for tomorrow - Chelski or Citeh? Who do you fear more this season?
Barry heads away a free kick from Tadic.
To be fair, i have been negative to the entire modern game
Again, not the game I love
Wanayama heads over from the corner.
So does that mean that you won't be waking up at 2 in the morning to watch United? For shame!
I think I fear Citeh more because Jose seems to have lost the plot and it will impact the team, IMHO.
Tomorrow will be a draw of course.. Neither team will want to take a risk and try and win!
Kathy is absolutely right - and she makes a lovely coffee cake!
That will suit United just right, eh? They'll be three points clear of Citeh and four points clear of Chelski early doors.
It will be more like 1:30 AM, which I did for the Japanoria WC. I agree with Kathy about us needing to be more positive about United, no matter how challenging that is.
Stones has a problem now; physio on to help him.
I will have to record the matches vs Brugges since I rertuen to work on Monday, but will look forward to seeing lots of goals while UWS is in Hawaii.
The Kone and Lukaku double act seems to be working for the Toffees. I do agree with UWS that the modern game is too conservative so it's refreshing to see a side and a manager who's willing to go with an actual strike partnership. Both have scored already this season.
I know she is... I have to stop
I am just not going to comment when I am so upset
I know, top of the league, no goals conceded, 100% record BUT it isn't the United way... the United of old
Pelle is booked for a naughty challenge.
I am pleased to see the Brummies one up at the half at Turf Moor. They Brummies are one of my picks for promotion.
I think the Hammers vs the Foxes may be an entertaining 10 AM match. It is being shown on USA.
Bob is correct as United vs the Toon is the early Prem match next Saturday. Kickoff is at 1:45 AM HST. Leeds vs Not a Big Club kicks off at 1:30 AM HST. UWS will need to set the Strawberry Alarm Clock for those.
That's a decent shout - Brum could do well this season.
GOAL! Another break and another Chunk goal!
GOAL !!! THE CHUNK SCORES HIS AND THE TOFFEES SECOND
Toffees two up... Lukaku with a neat finish
That might just kill off Soton today - great time to score. And a lovely finish from the big man. He's got a header and a left-footed strike. Now he only needs a right footed goal for a classic hat-trick.
tHREE MINUTES OF STOPPAGE TIME.
One more comment and I am done
Will the game go back to the way we knew? Just with Old Trafford in mind...
I know it won't go back to the times before we were alive where the formation was 3-2-5 with a left wing, inside left , center forward, inside right and right wing BUT what's wrong with have a partnership up top. Cole and Yorke, Sheringham and Solskjaer with Giggs and Beckham providing the width and quality crosses, VNR and Rooney with Ronaldo and Beckham providing width and quality crosses, Hughes and Cantona with Giggs and Kanchelskis providing width and quality crosses Greenhoff and Pearson... with Hill and Coppell providing width and supplying the crosses
Did I mention the the holding midfielder pair?
Wing backs?
A diamond?
Bob will be pleased that Ross Barkley played his part in both goals as he's shown what he learned at ER. The Chunk won a tackle in midfield then played a lovely one two with Barkley before scoring with a great finish
I'm sorry to say that those formations are a thing of the past. sorry, but the Ace of Diamonds is here to stay
Barkley is booked for a foul just outside the box seconds before the halftime break. Timmy punches away the free kick and the Toffees are two up at the half.
Someone must be delighted.
Half time and everyone in Toffeeland are on Cloud Nine
Off to get dressed and walk Shadow
I'll be back when I get back
The Brummies nearly went two up as Donaldson had a cross headed out then a volley was inches wide as Gary Rowett looks pleased at the way his side is playing.
Cotterill is called for a foul on Michael Kightly, who went down too easily and
BUGGER! BURNLEY TIE IT UP AS THE FREE KICK FROM KIGHTLY WAS HEADED ON BY NICO VOSSEN AND FORMER UNITED TRAINEE , MICHAEL KEANE HEADED IN AT THE FAR POST
Clayton Donaldson was through for the Blues , but his shot was saved by Tom Heaton from a narrow angle.
I am none too pleased about that Burnley goal as Kightly was barely touched and went down as if polaxed , then hen Burnley score off his free kick. It should never have been a free kick in the first place.
Scott Arfield shoots inches over from about 25 yards out as a Burnley free kick was headed out./
Burnley win a corner as they are starting to take control
A battle between a pair of former United players as Kusc lost the ball on the corner and headed wide by Michael Keane.
The second half is underway from St. Mary's
Ronnie makes a substitution as Romeu is on for his Saints debut in place of Tadic.
Mane has a cross blocked by Coleman and headed out by Clever Boy for a corner taken by Steven Davis and headed wide by Wanayama.
A spell of Saints pressure ends with a foul by Romeu on McCarthy and he's booked three minutes into his Prem debut.
Back on for the second half - what can Soton possibly do. I'm in the kitchen using our new mixer to make brekkie.
Wanayama wins a corner off of Barkley after doing well to get past young Galloway Davis takes it short. Mane wins another corner, thier third of the half.
welcome back . I will have brekiess at the conclusion of this match.
WAY HAY! The Brummies are back in front at Turf Moor, now leading 1-2.
Pelle has a close range effort blocked by Timmy after a cross from Mane bounced off of Coleman
Clayton Donaldson, who assisted on the first goal, was fouled in the box and Paul Caddis scored from the spot.
Justice was served as Burnley scored off a free kick that never should have been given.
Galloway is done as he overran the ball and collided with Romeu.
Sorry. Down, not done.
Cedric is down off an awkward challenge from Barry.
Man wins a corner off a back heel after a back heel from Pelle. Pelle heads inches over off the corner from Steven Davis.
The Chunk wins the Toffees first corner of the half.
Pelle heads away the corner then Barkley wins another corner.
BUGGER !!! IT'S DESMOND AT TURF MOOR.
Matty Taylor with the Burnley goal.
Jay Rodriguez is on for Shane Long after a sixteen month layoff.
Coleman wins a corner off of Yoshida.
Stecklenburg juggles out a header from Jags for another corner. Not So Clever Boy is offside off the next corner.
I'm back from the breakfast prep. Burnley are a decent side - I expect them to be there or there about.
Just as I expected, this one was over at half-time. Soton trying to press but no luck as of yet.
I am back from Walkies
No comments on my rant at half time!!!
McCarthy is booked for a foul on Pelle on a Saints break.
Welcome back Bob and Dave.
Agreed. Both Brum and Burnley should be up there
I commented on your rant at the half.
I do think that the game will swing back in a more attacking direction. It may not go back to a W-M formation, as you say, mate. But it will only just take one attacking side that's successful to show the way, as Barca did for the tiki taka possession nonsense that's ruining the game.
Timmy does well to push away a long range effort from Mane as James Ward-Prowse is on for Steven Davis.Naismith is on for Kone.
Naismith to come on for Kone now - he's had a good match.
The corner from Ward-Proswe is headed away then shot well over by Wanayama.
Ten minutes for Sotton to get something
I hope you are correct, but unfortunately, I don't see the game changing any time soon. I hope I'm mistaken
Who will babysit Shadow while you are in Hawaii?
The Chunk has a shot blocked for a corner.
The corner is headed away
The Chunk looks gassed but he'll be happy with his efforts.
And that's 3-0! Ross Barkley!
It finishers Desmond at Turf Moor. A decent result for the Brummies, but is that two points dropped as they had the lead?
Three nil
Barkley with a nice finish
GOAL !!!! THIS MATCH IS DONE AND DUSTED AS ROSS PUTS THE TOFFEES THREE UP WITH A CURLING EFFORT.
Nice build up there as they sliced through Soton's back line. Koeman not best impressed by their efforts.
Bob... you seem to be ahead of me!
Kathy's brother lives here and the Tom, Matt and Jon will be here
It all started with a throw and Coleman played a nice one-two with the Chunk then Coleman found Barkley , who scored with a nice finish.
Matt has officially been accepted to Siena this week. He is leaving St. Rose and transfering ...hence the change of name
Naismith could have put the Toffees four up, but for a timely tackle.
Congratulations to Tom. Is that a good move for Tom?
I'm always ahead of you, mate. I know the future, don't you know?
Hi Bob,
Alex here. Sofia just vomited, so I wanted to let you know about that. If you guys want to exercise caution in case this is some type of virus, perhaps we should postpone tonight's dinner?
Matt not Tom
Tom is student teaching this semester and then he will be done. He is student teaching local so he will be living at home
As for Matt, I think it is a good move for him
One youngster on for another as Browning is on for Galloway. Looks like a decent Toffees youth Academy. The final roll of the dice from Roberto as Deulafeu is on for the Chunk.
Great to hear. My apologies for the case of mistaken identity.
I wasn't invited to any dinner... were you Dave?
I feel shunned
I'm delighted to hear that Shadow is in great hands so that you can get some cat naps ahead of the Prem matches while in Hawaii.
No I wasn't either. I think the two Daves will be missing out.
UWS - unless you could motor up to Fredonia by tonight, it would be a bit tough. ;)
Someone should be delighted at this impressive result in what looked to be a difficult fixture prior to kickoff.
I hope Southampton don't struggle this season. I hope this is just a blip
It would be even tougher for me because I would have to catch a last minute flight immediately and would be fortunate to make it on time.
It's only five hours from the Capital Region...I'll be there!
PS, Blue Devil,
Better that you respond over regular mail, or you can give me a phone call, as I won't be monitoring the blog. I just knew that it was the quickest way to find you this morning.
Hi Alex - thanks for checking in. Sorry to hear about little Sofia. I think that maybe it's wise to postpone for tonight. I was a touch under the weather last night. We'll have plenty of time to catch up in the weeks to come.
I have a feeling that the Saints will sort things out.
At least there was an invite...that's all I'm saying.
No discrimination on LOB
it's over as the Toffees win 0-3 at St. Mary's
Everton win 3-0... keep it up for next week against Citeh... of course... I won't care sitting on Waikiki Beaach!
I'm not bothered. I was just kidding. I hope it is a great dinner.
Duh.. of course we were just kidding!!!
You will probably be waking up around the end of the late match.
Think of me as I return back on Monday.I will be suffering at work while you're in paradise.
Next is The Spuds vs the Potters on NBCSN and the Hammers vs the Foxes on USA. The one on USA looks the better match.
That is bad.. I feel for you!
After I get back from Hawaii/San Diego, I have to teach at the college that evening and then go back to the day job the following Tuesday
Looks like we will have two games on network telly every week!!
take care lads,
If there is a real crackerjack of a match in the weeks to come, I might drop by at the Blue Devil's. For now, I downloaded a bunch of vintage World Cup matches off of youtube, so that will have to satisfy my soccer urges.
I have made the move from kitchen Mac to the couch on a hand-me-down PC. I am listening to SS on wireless headphones.
Hope it works... this PC is crappy btw
Cheers Red Devil. It was great chatting with you.
Thanks , UWS. I am using the PIP option on the telly, so I can watch both matches simultaneously. I should have done that earlier as there were four goals at Turf Moor and I missed three.
You are quite the modern day techy. well done. I guess Mac has taken the early lead vs PC
My Bundesliga pick Bayern, started in style yesterday making Hamburger meat out of the opposition, defeating Hamburg 5-0.
Upset that Stoke didn't get anything from Pool last week
Here they come out at White Hart Lane
Hugo Lloris is back in goal for the Spuds after an injury layoff.
That match vs Pool was almost a carbon of our match vs the Spuds. when I watched it I thought I was watching a replay of the match at OT.
not sure which match I should watch. I have NBC and USA but the choice of the other matches in the 400s... oh the choices these days!
I prefer the one on USA, who hasn't switched over yet.
They're off from SFL.
As they are from Upton Park
And we've kicked off at Upton Park!
CYOI
Mark Noble is fouled by Andy King just outside the box.
Chance for Spurs to put in a dangerous kick... hopeless delivery!!
Last ever opening day at Upton Park... sad
Off the crossbar . . . should've been a corner.
OH!!! Sakho headed off the bar from the free kick and it appears that a corner should have been given. Kasper made a mess of that one.
Welcome Sir Trev
Good morning John. Great to have you on board. How have you been?
West Ham with a bright start. Leicester will look to press the ball. Should be a corker!
You must be delighted about that excellent result last week. I hope you didn't give the Gooner too much stick.
Back for the Spurs v. Stoke. Morning, WHR. We've got the full lot on today. Great to have all your boys around.
Morning. Davey G. I've been exhausted. Too much travel. How've you been?
I agree. I think this is the better of the two televised matches.
Jack Butland pushes around a near post effort from Eriksen.
WHelan fouled Dier just outside the Stoke Box and is booked.
I'm doing well. Thanks Johnno. Unfortunately I'm back to work on Monday
