Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

The teams are in the tunnel at St. Mary's:
Southampton: Stekelenburg; Soares, Yoshida, Fonte, Targett; Steven Davis, Romeu; Tadic, Ward-Prowse, Mané; Pellè. Subs: Kelvin Davis, Long, Rodriguez, Martina, Reed, Juanmi, Caulker.
Norwich: Ruddy; Whittaker, Martin, Bassong, Brady; Redmond, Dorrans, Tettey, Howson; Hoolahan; Jerome. Subs: Rudd, Wisdom, Johnson, Hooper, Ryan Bennett, O’Neil, Van Wolfswinkel.
Referee: Jon Moss
These are curious times for Southampton. They were the only Premier League team, it appeared, battling hard to qualify for the Europa League last season but on Thursday were dumped out before even reaching the group stages. They have started this campaign in worryingly rusty fashion and only Sunderland languish below them.
Norwich arrive on the south coast having made a solid if unspectacular start to life back in the Premier League, playing some attractive football but managing only four points – perhaps not the return their performances have deserved.
The Saints get us underway at a very green looking St. Mary's. And we have an early free kick chance for them.
Oh - James Ward-Prowse curls one around the wall and pulls a fingertip save out of Ruddy. Great start!
Cam Jerome is a casualty after the resulting corner.
Good start by the home side, pushing quickly up the left side. Another corner.
The ball falls to Jose Fonte on the volley - not really the player you would have wanted behind that chance.
Now - Jerome, healthy again - wins a corner for the Canaries.
Saints continue their early pressure.
Oh - Pelle nearly got on the end of that corner but Bassong put him off.
The key to a Norwich success here must be to get Hoolahan in to the game as much as possible. A couple of straightforward, sideways passes aside he hasn’t really featured yet.
Mane with a nice snapshot at goal but Ruddy smothered it well. Good start from the Norwich keeper.
The home supporters are quiet as church mice now. The home side's calmed down into a tight, attractive but unexciting match now.
Pelle tries the acrobatic - and it comes to nothing.
Oh - Cam Jerome misses an absolute sitter there - eight yards out and Dorrans had teed him up beautifully.
Whittaker is sent off for two yellow cards in three minutes. The first was a nonsense. He knocked the ball out of Tadic's hand as he went to throw it in. And now he's held Tadic back.
Norwich down to ten men!
That's the sixth red card in the Premiership this weekend. Wow!
Southampton bang up for this now.
The match has fizzled a bit since Whittaker's sending off. I thought Saints might push on...but no.
GOAL! Pelle fires the Saints into the lead.
Super combination between Mane and Pelle and the Italian slid the ball by Ruddy on the near post.
1-0!
We're back on at St. Mary's for the second half.
Oh - great save Ruddy from that drive by Mane.
Another great save by Ruddy - this time for Jay Rodriguez.
Le Tiss up in the stands enjoying this Saints display.
Good morning, Bob. Thanks for starting the thread. I was getting a wee bit of extra kip.
It appears that the Saints have dominated, but I see that the Canaries have been a man down since the half hour mark.
Pelle heads over the corner from James Ward -Prowse
Well done, mate - I'm sure that it was well deserved. How's Elizabeth?
GOAL !!! TADIC BLASTS A DEFLECTED PASS FROM MANE IN THE UPPER 90. THE SAINTS ARE NOW TWO UP
GOAL! And you've arrived just in time to watch Tadic fire home a cross from Mane.
2-0 Saints - home and hosed.
GOAL! And another. Mane is really causing havoc down that left hand side. Cedric dinks over to Pelle who produces a save but Tadic mops it up.
3-0 Saints!
GOAL !!! TADIC PUTS THE SAINTS THREE UP WITH A TAP IN AFTER RUDDY SAVED A HEADER FROM PELLE.
Norwich have been overrun here today. This might just kick-start Southampton's season.
The goal came down the Saints right where Cedric played a one two with Mane , then Cedric put in a delightful cross that was headed by Mane saved by Ruddy then tapped in by Tadic. This one is done and dusted.
Former Leeds favorite , Bradley Johnson, is on for Dorrans.
Not much that Brad can do about this shower.
I apologize for not responding. I didn't expect two quick goals. Elizabeth is doing well. The birthday party went really well. Her mother seemed to be okay, but was getting a little tired when we left. Thank you for asking. I was really tired when we got home and slept soundly last night.
What's your thinking about the United match this morning?
Would this have been a different match if both sides had the full 11 on the pitch
I'll bet you did - many happy returns to Elizabeth. I've just posted a simple birthday message to her on FB.
I don't know - Norwich just never really got into this one. Saints were already in charge, even when Whittaker was on the pitch.
I hope we don't lose our first match of the season. The Swans have been a thorn in our side in recent meetings. They are off to a good start and will be a tough test for us at the Liberty.
Thanks mate. I will do so as well.
With only Citeh looking in really good form, it gives United a chance to play themselves into a good position. What's going on at Chelski!!?
The Saints were eliminated from the EL a few days ago , so this should help them focus more on the league. This should be a learning experience for Alex Neill and his Canaries.
I saw that - not good news for them.
I'm not sure, but I don't see them retaining the title. Jose will be running out of excuses. Alan Pardew became the first manager to defeat him in three Prem matches. Will Jose win the sack race. I think he did in his first spell at the Bridge.
Doesn't look like it. Losing away to Citeh is one thing. But allowing Palace to beat them at home is another thing entirely. They're in 13th!
The next match for the Canaries will be against fellow promoted side, the Cherries. That should be an interesting contest against a fellow promoted side.
I know Chelsea can go on a run, but this isn't good enough
Very interesting. The international break should give sides a chance to breathe and reflect.
Mane gets a standing ovation as he's replaced by Juanmi. Mane would be a great signing for United, but we really need another striker , a good keeper, and a central defender.
The Koeman boys can celebrate with some Heinnes or Amstel. They look like they have done plenty of that since retiring.
The United side for the late one:
Man Utd: Romero; Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Shaw; Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger; Mata, Ander Herrera, Depay; Rooney. Subs: Hernandez, Carrick, Young, Valencia, Fellaini, McNair, Johnstone.
What do you make of that one?
That seems to be the side that United have played, so that is expected. I noticed that LVG has been rotating Carrick and the Pig Stick. I have been disappointed with the Pig Stick's start at United. They will need to be at their best to get anything from their trip to South Wales.
I'm sorry but it doesn't look like a United side; rather, it's just an assemblage of players. But no spine to the side. Do I sound like UWS?
The closest that the Canaries have come to scoring as a miss hit cross from Bardy goes inches over after his corner as headed away, but Stecklenburg seemed to have it covered.
This one is about over, so I'm going to head to the shower ahead of the late one.
You do. was UWS typing in your place? Seriously , I do agree. It seems more like a bun ch of talented individuals instead of a team , so I expect them to be a little short of winning the title due to that
Cheers mate. Three minutes of stoppage time
Bob is in the shower as this shower is over . The Saints win 3-0
I'm back and all squeaky clean for the late one. Here are the teams coming out at the Liberty now:
Swansea: Fabianski; Naughton, Fernandez, Williams, Taylor; Cork, Shelvey; Routledge, Sigurdsson, Ayew; Gomis. Subs: Ki, Dyer, Nordfeldt, Tabanou, Eder, Rangel, Bartley.
Man Utd: Romero; Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Shaw; Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger; Mata, Ander Herrera, Depay; Rooney. Subs: Hernandez, Carrick, Young, Valencia, Fellaini, McNair, Johnstone.
Referee: Martin Atkinson (W Yorkshire)
What to make of those teams? Matteo Darmian is spared the challenge of trying to stop Jefferson Montero, who is nowhere to be seen today for Swansea. As tough as the Manchester United right-back is, he’ll be relieved about that. Montero has been in frightening form this season. Wayne Routledge replaces him and it seems that Andre Ayew will move to the left. It’s still a strong Swansea team, though, and they should be confident of getting something from this match. Not that United look weak. Michael Carrick and the injured Adnan Januzaj drop out. Champions League winner and world champion Mr Stamper comes in and Morgan Schneiderlin returns, while Ander Herrera keeps his place after his impressive second half against Club Brugge.
The home faithful are chiming in with a resounding chorus of "Flags of My Father." And we're away!
United are up and at 'em right away with some early pressure. And Smalling wins an early free kick.
They're off from the Liberty!
COME ON UNITED!
fLAPPY PUHSES AWAY THE FREE KICK THEN THE sWANS CLEAR
Mata and Memphis are behind this one.
Oh - it is Memphis who strikes it low through the wall and Flappy did well to scoop it away.
Oh - Memphis is flying again and a nice lay-off from Herrera leaves Mata with a shooting chance. Well over.
I am pleased that Montero is not playing. He has been really impressive and would have caused all sorts of problems. We are off to a good start
This is more like it - now Shaw is galloping up the flank to latch on to a pass from Danny Blind. Have United been reading UWS' comments?
United are really enjoying themselves; they’ve picked up where they left off against Club Brugge.
I think Shelvey has had a good start to the season too. Routledge is a decent player, but doesn't pose the same threat as Montero. Andy Ayew is off to a good start too.
I think LVG must have read UWS's comments because they looked more like the UNited of old in midweek albeit that it was a ragged performance from Brugge.
Swansea settle things down. It’s been a tough start for them. United came racing out of the blocks, but there are signs that it’s beginning to level out now.
Swansea are a decent side, I agree. They should have no trouble staying up this season and might even push on a bit.
I agree. The Swans finished eighth last season and that's about where I expect them to finish at the end of this season.
So, which two sides in the Premiership have yet to concede a goal, mate?
Pigsticker wins a cheap free kick and United carry on with their dominance of possession.
The answer to your question is the two Manc clubs.
This is a scrappy spell, Swansea straining to get a foothold, United snapping into the challenges in midfield.
Yes, indeed - of course the difference is that you lot have scored two and Citeh have scored ten!
There was that Carrick OG at OT against Brugge, so technically just Citeh.Pool lost their perfect record with that shock result against the Hammers yesterday
Arlo just mentioned something that we had all expected. Citeh have signed De Bruyne from The VWs. The former Chelsea player should be the final piece in the puzzle for Citeh.
True. And I think only Memphis has scored in the Prem for United, right? Because the first goal was technically a Spurs o.g. by Kyle Walker.
United have a cross headed out for a corner.
Citeh have a frightening squad now; however, Kevin didn't respond well to the squad rotation at Chelski and he's likely to see more of the same at Citeh. Sterling has gotten off to a really good start and won't be easily shoved aside.
Yes. That is correct . Just goals from Memphis and the Walker OG that was actually walked in
What was that? Rooney was put through and he seemed to either hesitate or lose speed. Extraordinary. Williams was able to recover when Flappy should have been pulling the ball out of the net.
De Bruyne rarely even played for Chelsea. I don't think he was really in the rotation. I'm sure that despite his comments that Jose could really use the young Belgian's services. De Bruyne's move from the VW City means that he should be a driving force in the Citeh midfield.
Oh - Mata should have scored there - misses near post. United are definitely knocking at the door.
Better from United, but Mata shot wide from a difficult angle. Good link up play as Herrera did well to pick out Mata
We'll see - I wouldn't want to be joining a side that's flying like Citeh - why change things if you're Pellegrini?
UWS has just checked in via text from the West Coast. Guess what - he's not happy with United. No surprise there.
United have out shot the Swans 4-0. Now it's time to start tucking those away
The first shot by the Swans and the dangerous Gomis shoots well wide.
I would be surprised if he was happy. He would have wanted United at least five up by now with a few acrobatics as well.
United need to make sure the Swans controlling midfield because I have noticed that Gomis is only as good as the service he receives.
Oh - Siggy had a great chance against the run of play. Dragged wide.
OH!!! Inches wide by Siggy. The closest the Swans have come to scoring
Now Shelvey tries a long range volley after a poor clearance from Romero.
Oh - now Gomis has hit the outside of the upright. United have switched off suddenly.
Gomis received a p[ass from Shelvey and clipped the outside of the past
Both chances have come from Shelvey and Gomis combining. United need to somehow stop Shelvey from controlling the midfield.
Roon volleys over, but it was always going to be difficult as he had to stretch just to make contact.,
Smalling dives in a bit rashly there.
I take back what I said . Now I agree with UWS because Swansea is now dominating. United need to pull their fingers out
Poor by Roon despite the difficult angle. A soft chip was easily caught by Flappy off a nice through ball.
Rooney is played through again but tries a tame chip. What's up with him? He was explosive in mid-week but now he's back to the old Rooney mode.
A long range effort from Herrera goes well wide.
The rain starts to teem down in South Wales.
Johnno must be delighted that his team surprisingly Hammered Liverpool at Anfield yesterday. I'm sure UWS and Someone must be pleased too as is Yours Truly.
Schneiderlin is the first player booked as he fouls Cork.
I'm sure he is.
Romero fumbles the free kick from Shelvey then catches it at the second attempt.
I would still like to see another striker up alongside Rooney - perhaps a more orthodox one like Lewandowski. Are you lot still in for him?
I didn't see that result coming. The announcer said it was the Hammers first win at Anfield since the early 60s. Slaven will be delighted since he is a former Toffee.
Idon't think so. I know we are linked to Mane, but Lewandowski is needed more than him. We also need a top keeper.
Memphis is booked for pulling down Andy Ayew.
Routledge is the first Swansea player booked as he pulls down Darmian
Coming down to the last few moments at the Liberty. I'm not sure that 0-0 is a fair score at the moment - United should be ahead.
Is Twilight definitely off then?
Useless from Blind . A minute of stoppage time.
A deal hasn't been made, but I would be surprised if he's a Real player by tomorrow afternoon.
It's 0-0 at the half. I guess that's a fair score based on the run of play
That's half-time, then. What do you reckon, mate?
The Swans get us started again at the Liberty.
The second half is underway and it's been a tough test for United as I predicted.
The answer to your question is that as the match progressed, the Swans looked more likely to score. United will have to improve if they want to get anyhting out of this match.
Damian gives us a silly free kick that now gives Swansea an advantage.
Darmian fouls Routledeg just outside the box and is fortunate not to be booked United are fortunate that Routledge tamely curls the e free kick to Romero
GOAL! Juan Mata is Johnny on the Spot at the backpost to roof home United's first.
0-1!
GOAL !!! THEN MATA PUTS UNITED INTO THE LEAD AS THEY GO STRAIGHT UP THE PITCH AND SCORE.
Great ball over from Shaw that caused all sorts of problems for the Swansea backline. It ran right through to the lucky Spaniard.
United literally did go straight up the pitch and score seconds after Romero caught the free kick from Shelvey. He threw it out to Schneiderlin, who found Shaw . He went speedily down the left , put in a great cross that Roon flicked on and Mata did well to finish at the far post.
One of the best saves of the season as Flappy prevents United from going two up. A miss hit cross from Memphis was nearly put in as an OG by Ashley Williams and Flappy made an acrobatic save to keep the Swans in the match
Routledge is off for Ki, who will be hoping to unlocking the United defense, BOOM BOOOM!
United should have gone two up as Mata shot straight at Flappy with just the keeper to beat. Great combo work between the two Spaniards, Mata and Herrera.
Bugger - Swansea are back in it - sorry mate.
BUGGER!!!! THE SWANS TIE IT UP WITH A HEDAER FROM ANDY AYEW.
Thanks Bob. United have only themselves to blame for giving Ayew a free header in the six yard box.
The goal started with Ashley Williams winning a tackle just outside the box. He went on a long solo run , found the wide open Siggy down the right and he put in a cross for the unmarked Andy Ayew to head in . He did take a goal away from Gomis.
Still - that's the first goal conceded in four Premiership matches - not bad for the new look United backfour.
Also, why was Luke Shaw caught upfield and how did Blind , the makeshift central defender not keep an eye on Ayew, leaving him so wide open
I agree. I just was a really bad goal to concede for multiple reasons.
DAMN IT!!! GOMIS SCORES AS ROMERO HORRIBLY FUMBLES IN A SHOT AT HIS NEAR POST.THE SWANS LEAD 2-1.
Oh dear - it's a second for Swansea and a bit of a howler from Romero. The ball from Shelvey was good alright, but Gomis should not have been able to beat the Argentine keeper at his near post.
That shows why United need a top class keeper. I could have saved that tame effort from Gomis who shot under the dive of Romero. Shelvey found Ayew. This time he was provider, which makes up for the goal he took away from Gomis
It does indeed.
He looked more like Cesar Romero in goal because he was playing like the Joker!
That prompts a double switcheroo from LVG as Yashley is on for Mata and Carrick is on for Scheniderlin. Just what we need . Two holding middies when we need an equalizer.
I think this is the first time that Pig Stick and Carrick have been on the pitch at the same time.
Yashey's first involvement was to cross right against Shelvey and his second weas to cross straight to Flappy, who unlike the Joker, has not.
COME ON DESMOND. He was visiting Fred yesterday afternoon.
The final roll of the dice for LVG as Hair Bear is about to come on.
WTF!! An obvious foul throw by Darmian
There it is as Hair Bear is on for Herrera. One CL scorer is on for another as Hair Bear scored off the bench that time too. More of the same please!
Boom boom, mate - nice Batman reference.
United are going all Route One now with Hair Bear on the scene.
I think United got away with one their as he was flagged offside , but looked on with just Romero to beat. Eder is on for Gomis
I know it's not their style, but they really have to since they are chasing the game.
A United loss would put them in fourth behind Citeh . Palace, and the Foxes. Also , that would leave Citeh , the Foxes , and the Swans as the only undefeated teams. I think Bob would agree that there are some early season surprises.
Actually, the Swans are in fourth and United fifth. That puts the Swans in a CL spot along with Palace and the Foxes. I'm sure nobody predicted that
Oh - Roon was through and seemed to have it under control but was then bundled over by Williams. No pen. I'd have to see that again.
I'd have to say that that was a fair challenge. It's another instance where Roon wasn't sharp enough to take his chances. He's had three of those today.
I know United could have used a spot kick, but the tackle by Ashley Williams on Roon was never a pen. Roon did well to control a long diagonal and beat a defender, but it was a superb tackle by Williams.
A deserved ovation for Shelvey as he's replaced by Kyle Bartley, the former Arsenal academy player. Four minutes of stoppage time.
Into stoppage time - come on, United!
I see that Leeds are a point outside a playoff spot. Not bad, mate.
I always knew this would be a stiff test for United. They haven't passed it topday
Thanks, mate. Even after this one, you're the same way - a point out of the CL spots.
That's that - sorry mate, not to be today. UWS will be furious out there on the West Coast. Everything started well but Roon didn't take his chances.
It's over and the Swans defeat United 2-1 , handing them their first loss of the season. I felt that the Swans deserved to win .
UWS is right to be furious about the performance today
That puts us behind Palace, the Foxes, and the Swans in the standings. Whop would have thought?
Now it's off to the international break. England are away to San Marino next Saturday with the match kicking off at noon Eastern.. Surely, Roon should get a couple against the minnows
I'll have a cracking International Break Footie Trivia question for you on Tuesday. Look out for it.
That's it for me. it was great chatting with you. Have a great week. I guess we'll chat next on Saturday unless there is something before then . Cheers!
I will be looking forward to that. Cheers!
