Blogging the Democratic Debate!
Evening, folks - it's the night of the last Democratic Party Presidential debate before the Iowa Caucuses on February 1 and I couldn't be any more giddy with excitement. The DNC has done its level best to dissuade people from watching these debates scheduling them on Saturday nights and evenings before major holidays when NFL playoff games and "Downton Abbey" are going on. Still - I'm here tonight Feeling the Bern and blogging. It's snowing outside but I'm warm and toasty inside The Cottage. I hope you'll join me for all the political banter tonight.

I'm Berning Up here at The Cottage with less than half an hour to go until the big debate. I'm watching the pre-match show on MSNBC. The main event is on NBC at 9pm. Come on by!
The candidates are coming out on stage now. Go Bernie Go!
The coverage has started on NBC now, with Chuckie Todd doing the preliminaries.
Lester Holt is kicking us off with the opening statements from the candidates, beginning with Hillary Clinton.
Now it's Bernie's turn - it looks like he's got a fresh haircut. Nice on, Bern!
Now it's Martin O'Malley's turn - Martin who?
Now all the candidates are being asked for their top priorities. Sanders says Wall Street reform, the minimum wage and crumbling infrastructure.
Clinton: creating new jobs, clean and renewable energy, equal pay for women. She wants to build upon the ACA.
Now Holt is asking Sanders to respond to Clinton's charge about being a reliable vote for the gun lobby. He does a great job responding, hitting all of the major points. He just needs to close the daylight on this issue.
Clinton now really going for the throat on the issue. The quicker this one goes by, the better.
Now on to the issue of police violence. Clinton is asked about Black Lives Matter. This is another strong topic for her.
Here's the first YouTube clip question. The first question involves the Black Lives Matter movement.
Very strong response to the Tamir Rice case.
We hit the first tv commercials. The topics haven't favored Sanders yet, with most of them directed toward Clinton's strong areas (guns and race).
That's better. Now Clinton is asked whether her characterization of Sanders as wanting to kill the ACA. She waffles.
Awesome! Sanders points out that Clinton didn't answer the question.
Bernie's getting fiery now - yowsa!
Another great point from Bernie - he cuts against Hillary's hatred for Republicans and states that the real problem is that Congress is owned by corporations.
They're letting Hillary go on and on. Martin O'malley isn't getting any time, and Bernie has to fight for time.
He's killing Hillary (and O'Malley) on the issue of Superpacs.
Just tuned in on Youtube . . . Bernie throwing haymakers and Hillary ducking and weaving with the soft jabs. Is MOM playing the referee?
That was a much stronger section, with Sanders really rocking Clinton back on her feet. Great stuff!
Welcome, WHR - great to hear from you. I thought that the first section of the debate - on guns and race - really played into Clinton's hands. But the second segment allowed Sanders to score a lot of points. The crowd sounds partisan Clinton to me but Sanders is getting lots of applause too.
While we are on commercial, how did Leeds do this weekend?
Good - Clinton is hanging her hat on Dodd-Frank.
Interesting line here. Hillary tying herself to Obama.
You are right. Crowd seems pro-Clinton.
Ah - we lost 2-0 away to Sheffield Wednesday. That's two losses on the trot for us, but against superior opposition. We lost to Ipswich in mid-week.
This is really weak terrain for HRC.
Why is MOM on stage? It makes no sense.
Now O'Malley is taking some swings at HRC - excellent!
Agreed - he should be back in Baltimore.
Pathetic - now HRC is having to try to attack Sanders on taxes and fiscal responsibility.
Have prior Democratic debates been this contentious among the candidates?
Another YouTube question - this time on climate change. Another great one for Sanders.
OOOO, a cartoon!
No - the first two were really chummy. But HRC has gotten increasingly more desperate as Sanders' numbers have held and/or improved. I think she's being visited the Ghost of Campaigns Past now. This smells like 2008.
Great line about Trump thinking that Climate Change is a hoax invented by the Chinese. Bernie is killing it!
Next up after the ads - foreign policy. Could get spicy.
We're back and Sanders gets the first question about Iran. This is strong terrain for him.
Not going to be able to post for a bit . . . Kat and Maggie watching with me now.
Is the whole family watching? Cool!
Bernie is killing it on the issue of regime change and Iraq.
Great - HRC was forced into a position of not fully supporting Obama's Iran deal. She's clearly running to the right of Obama on foreign policy.
Now Holt is taking a poke on HRC on the issue of Putin.
Now another YouTube question - privacy v. security. Another good one for Sanders.
Sanders gets a chance to take a shot at the PATRIOT ACT, which HRC voted for in the Senate.
Now HRC is being asked about the role that Bill Clinton will play. She plays it off playfully.
Sanders rises above the muck by saying that he's going to stick to the issues and not talk about Bill Clinton.
Closing remarks now.
MOM rambles on about a number of issues that no one is interested in. He also plays the ref, complaining about the lack of time he's gotten tonight.
Clinton ends on the water issue in Flint, Michigan. That's a strong one.
And that wraps it up. I'm not sure that anyone was watching that one but if they were, Sanders did well by them. I couldn't be more excited about his prospects for Iowa in a couple of weeks. Bring it on!
