Wahay - It's FA Cup 4th Round Saturday!
After a long workweek, it's a pleasure to be joining you for a morning of FA Cup 4th Round footer. United became the first side into the 5th Round draw with a hard-earned 1-3 win over threatening Derby County. Now UWS and MUR and sit back and relax and watch the others. Join us for all the action this morning, starting Colchester v. Spurs. The romance of the Cup - it's right here on the LOB!
459 Comments:
Good morning Bob. I'm delighted that United won, but unfortunately I won't be around for all the action because we have several errands to run today. I will be in and out
Sigh. It's those knuckleheads at FOX!
Yes - I keep forgetting that there is a parallel universe where Rob Stone, Lexi Lalas and Warren Barton live.
Morning, mate - I hope you'll be able to see some of the best action in between the errands.
First up is the romantic match-up between L1 strugglers Colchester and high-flying Spurs. A win over Spurs today would not only be one of the most famous Cup days for Colchester but would also take the sting out of their inevitable relegation to L2 at the end of the season.
The teams now warming up:
Colchester United: Kean, Brindley, Wynter, Eastman, Vincent-Young, Massey, Gilbey, Garvan, Ambrose, Moncur, Sordell.
Subs: Parish, Edwards, Lee, Bonne, Sordell, Kent, Briggs.
Tottenham Hotspur: Vorm, Trippier, Dier, Wimmer, Davies, Bentaleb, Carroll, Lamela, Eriksen, Chadli, Kane.
Subs: Lloris, Alderweireld, Walker, Alli, Dembele, Onomah, Son.
Referee: Michael Oliver (Northumberland).
I will try.A win for Colchester would probably be the biggest Cup day since 1971.
It looks like a mixture of starters and reserves for the Spuds, but Harry Kane starts. Is that a sign of intent that Pochettino wants to escape with a win on the short trip home.
YIKES!! Colchester are rock bottom of L1. They're really struggling.Weston Homes is a much more modern stadium than the old Layer Road.
Colchester haven't won a match since mid-October!
Gary Taphouse and Dean Aston on the mic this afternoon from the Weston Community Stadium.
And we're away in this 4th Round tie.
A cup atmosphere as they're off from Layer Road! Sorry Weston Homes Stadium
The spuds attack immediately and Chadli heads wide off a cross from Trippier
A clash of heads between two Colchester players between Eastman and Alex Wynter, who is still down and we're not talking about a rock star!
Wynter is still down and tragedy for him as his day is done just three minutes in. The main thing is that he's okay. Eatsman has yet to return as he's gone to the dressing room to get stitches.
The game has been delayed by a really nasty head clash here.
So Wynter is carted off and Frankie Kent is on in his stead. Let the game commence!
A standing ovation as Alex Wynter is stretchered off and young Frankie Kent is on. It will be a tough test as he will be marking Harry Kane.
Colchester still down to ten men as Eastman is still off receiving stitches.
Marking Harry Kane will be an early career test and help Kent develop his game.
There don't seem to be any camera angles closer than, say, the town centre.
Oh - Keane stops a sharp drive from Eriksen. This is predictably all Spurs now.
The Spuds should definitely as Kean makes a great near post save . The Colchester defenders failed to clear.
Kean makes an easy save from Chadli off a nice long ball from Bentaleb. This is like a training exercise.
Lamela has a shot blocked because he took too long to shoot.
Worm has to rush out to head clear off a long ball as Porter got behind the SPuds back four.
If Eastman can't come back on then the L1 side might as well bring on a sub becuase they surely won't match up against a Prem side being a man down
A brilliant save from Kean as he tips a swerving effort from Lamela on to the post as Bentaleb creates another chance.
Bloody hell - Tom Eastman has re-emerged looking as if he's been a WWI era trench battle.
Eastman kodak is back bandaged on for a photographic moment
So, how was your week, mate. Any highlights?
Credit to the L1 strugglers as they prevented the SPuds from scoring despite being a man down nearly ten minutes
It was a busy week. Thanks for asking. The highlight was Monday evening when I filed my taxes online and discovered that I'm getting a hefty refund. How was your week?
Dier has a shot blocked for a corner as the bandaged warrior blocks two shots Chadli heads wide off the corner from Lamela.
Now I ssee why Eastman Kodak wasn't substituted.. He seems to be the leader of this team
Jake Kean , the Colchester keeper, likes playing against North London sides. He was massive for Blackburn when they won 0-1 at the EM in the Cup a few years ago.
Sounds excellent - how are you going to spend your windfall?
A massive loss for Colchester as they are forced to make a second substitution. Jake Briggs is on for Eastman
Tom Eastman eventually trudges off realizing he can't continue.
We're still deciding. Some of it may go towards Melanie's Israel trip. Kids are expensive
Now Dier is down injured. There will be a hefty amount of in jury time.
Sorry . it was Trippier , who may have tripped, but he seems like he will continue
If Colchester had played a man down for ten minutes in 1971 as they did today, would they have created a massive cup upset? Would Ray Crawford have been such a hero?
Eriksen had a chance there but just didn't have the power to get beyond the defender.
OH!!!! A great counter by the Spuds as Eriksen is released and a shot aimed for the upper 90 is about a foot over.
Shhhhh...don't mention 1971.
GOAL !!!! CHADLI GIVES THE SPUDS THE LEAD.
GOAL! Nasser Chadli slams Spurs into the lead with a cracking drive.
Great combo play from the Prem side as Chadli was well set up by Lamela and he shot from the spot that Eriksen did. Unlike eriksen, his shot was well placed in the corner.
That had been coming, and it’s almost a repeat of the Eriksen shot, 60 seconds earlier.
The L1 strugglers win their first corner of the match to the delight of the home fans
Colchester trying to strike right back. Ambrose feeding Moncur earns a corner. Comfortably cleared out.
I know that Melanie will enjoy her trip to the spiritual homeland.
Cheers mate. I sure hope so.Probably more so than yours truly
Keane makes another great stop from a Harry Kane header. He's keeping his side in this one.
Kean does well toturn around a header from Harry Kane . The corner is cleared
TThe stats tell you everything as the Prem side have out shot their opponents a baker's dozen to nil
Dier heads out for a corner and worm easily catches the corner from Owen Garvan, the former Palace player
So far, the match has gone as expected except for the fact that the L1 strugglers have managed to keep the score down, especially the keeper.
Colchester are giving it a real go now and Moncur is finally getting into the match. Ten minutes until the orange slices.
Gilbey won't impress the Prem scouts as his shot goes out for a throw, so it doesn't count as a shot
Don't forget the tea lady, mate!
A pass from Trippier is cleared by Briggs for a corner.A header from Bentaleb is turned around by Kean for another corner.
The corner from Lamela is headed away then A back pass from Massey is picked by Kane , whose shot is blocked.
Tom Caroll volleys well over off a poor clearance from a flat pass by Trippier.
Moncur goes on a great solo run on a rare Colchester attack, but is outnumbered and easily tackled.
Some signs of Colchester trying to get back into this tie. Spurs are predictably taking the foot off the gas as we inch toward the interval.
Massey is tripped as the Spuds cough up possession.
The Free kick from Owen Garvan is headed away then head to Worm by Gilbey
It's in the mid 40s and sunny at the match. I'm sure Bob would take that in a New York minute
A half dozen minutes of stoppage time due to two injuries.
Harry Kane is flagged offside off pin pong action in the box off a pass from Trippier.
What a tackle from Frankie Kent on Harry Kane!
Young Frankie Kent's confidence will increase as he superbly times a tackle on Harry Kane.
I would - it's a beautiful day here in WNY. Sunny but in the 20s.
Is he from Kent???
Well over from Bentaleb off a poor clearance from Gilby.
The SPuds are one up at the half despite complete domination . The L1 strugglers will still believe that they are still in this match
We're back on at the Weston Homes Community Stadium for the second half.
No changes from either side at the break. Colchester, of course, only have one more roll of the dice, given those early injuries.
Oh - Lamela had the goal gaping...and he put it wide.
Spurs not committing much here - they'll be happy with the 0-1 win and berth in tomorrow's draw.
Oh - how did Chadli miss that one! Fair enough, the ball was behind him but when he worked it on to his left foot, he blasted it against the bar.
So, Colchester make their final change. Marvin Sordell on for Darren Ambrose.
Well, that was inevitable. A blast of a shot, deflected badly off a defender and it's 0-2.
Hey Boys
I am back from walkies just in time to see Spurs double their lead
Modern day football and media
What is SS talking about... Leicester City and the Premier League... NEITHER SUBJECT IS ON SHOW TODAY!
Please acknowledge the Cup is big!!
Just saw the classic free kick from Huth... his free kick went out for throw in!!!
Merse is complaining that why let him take it.. the league could be decided by GD. Why let him try to score against his old team. The panel are laughing at him but he's right! He brings up that he won the league at Liverpool because of goals
I'm on Merse's side
Hello mate. Back for the remainder of the match before the next round of errands.
Hiya MUR
Good morning UWS.
The SPuds are two up. Colchester should be proud that this has been a contest
OH! That was a big chance for Colchester as Marvin Sordell should have pulled one back. He dispossessed Dier and then had a shot come off the outside of the post with just Worm to beat
Josh Onomakh is on for eriksen as Colchester win a corner. The out swinger is headed away
Despite being two down Kevin Keen's lads can take a lot from this match. The former Hammers assistant can be proud of his lads and perhaps ue this as a springboard towards L1 survival
GOAL !!!CHADLI PUTS THE SPUDS THREE UP. GAME, SET ,AND MATCH
Three nil Spurs
Moments after Colchester hit the bar, Chadli sneaks in to head home #3 for Spurs. They're safely into the 5th Round draw now.
SS actually talking about the Cup right now!!
The Mouth derby!
2008 Pompey win the Cup and Bournemouth in League 2
HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGE!!
Colchester get a goal back
GOAL!!!! COLCHESTER PULL ONE BACK AND MASSEY HAS A SHOT COME OFF OF BEN DAVIES FOR AN OG
Well, that's something. Massey does well to take and poke a shot at goal that hits the bar and then goes in off Ben Davies.
Bournemouth make 11 changes
Sorry for my rant before
Hiya, UWS - I was busy eating my brekkies and didn't see you pop on. Welcome!
4-1!
I think I cut my rant
GOAL !!!! TOM CAROLL PUTS THE SPUDS 1-4 UP
Here it is
Top teams are making a lot changes to their line ups today
It drives me crazy. Its the clubs and PL at fault. Why schedule league games midweek after your precious Saturday was taken away. It used to be a time for replays!
I don't understand the English Football men in charge
It used to be run by the FA and the Football League. Then in 1992 a new animal was born.... The FA Carling Premiership. Both the league and Football as a whole were run by the same entity. At some point, the FA stopped running the league. When and how did this happen?
Both competitions can co-exist
Spurs are 1-4 up now - Tom Carroll sliding in for a jammy finish.
A close range effort from Carroll was diverted in off a pass from Chadli after great link up play
Sorry to bring this up, but didn't it start with United refusing to defend their Cup title because they wanted to make a bit of dosh off the bogus FIFA World Club tournament.
It doesn't help that for the second consecutive round that a full matchday of Prem matches is scheduled three days after cup matches, creating fixture congestion. I don't remember this type of scheduling when I lived in England
I know what you mean but United were asked by the FA so they could host the World Cup in 2006
No . It did not. UNited were forced into that position due to a ridiculous schedule. I agree with UWS that it started back in'92.
That's my point about the idiots!
There is no reason to have a full slate of matches
Should be like the old days.. have the replays midweek right away
Back to the Colchester goal. Josh Onomah was tackled deep in the Colchester half and a long pass from Moncur, who passed to Massey and his shot went off of the post and off of Ben Davies for an OG
I agree. It gives teams an incentive to win their cup matches at the first attempt, making it easier for managers to put out a full strength lineup.
Back to the third Spuds goal. A long possession culiminated in a cross from Trippier and a header from Chadli that deflected off of Frankie Kent for a goal.
The FA was in charge of the Premier League. When did this stop?
I have a t-shirt from the first season... it says
FA CARLING PREMIERSHIP INAUGURAL CHAMPIONS!
I read a Terry Venables book talking about making sense to have the FA take over the League. He said it made no sense to have to entities
Confused
The announcer seems impressed that the Spuds are dominating the bottom side from L1. Isn't that the bare minimum requirement when you're fourth in the Prem?
Two minutes of stoppage time.
It sounds like a power struggle where the fans are punished
I agree with you, mate. I miss the old days when all the matches were at Saturday at 10am, replays on Wednesdays at 7:45pm and the Champions League was actually played between league champions.
It's over and as expected a comfortable win for the Spuds as they easily win 1-4.
Well stated, Bob.
I can't find any reason
Let's just stop the Cup right now
I'm pleased with the two teams that have reached the 5th round are Spurs and United... just play the Final now
How about Citeh vs Pool in the Capital One Cup Final? You seem to be quite the cup expert.
Last time Arsenal lost in the Cup was in the 5th Round at home to a Lancashire club(Blackburn).... could history repeat itself... Lancashire club(Burnley) up next
Something of interest for Bob. I think Bolton vs Leeds is on FS Plus, which means it should be on Fox Soccer 2 GO.
Burnley is third in the Championship , so they won't be a pushover. They , like United , defeated Derby County this week.
Of course, Arsenal had no problem in the 6th round against a Lancashire club away from home last season... United were muppets
They're better than United... they beat the Rams 4-1 and not 3-1
United went out to the winners. If they don't make it to the final then the same might happen again
Lexi looks like Sean dyche.
To underscore UWS' point about modern managers, here's the line-ups for the next one up on the box - Arsenal v. Burnley:
Ospina, Chambers, Gabriel, Koscielny, Gibbs, Coquelin, Elneny, Iwobi, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sanchez, Giroud
Heaton, Darikwa, Keane, Mee, Ward, Boyd, Jones, Ulvestand, Arfield, Vokes, Gray
My eyes will be firmly on the match at the Reebok between my beloved and lowly Bolton. MOT!
I can see the resemblance.
No cheating... can you name the 22 clubs in the inaugural season of the Prem?
do you like the modern day half and half scarfs they sell now
I like the one I got from my brother-in-law for Cambridge v Man U but I can see the little ones would like it but why are Villa selling half Villa/ City scarfs!
Maybe they think they won't meet each other for awhile after this season
I'll give it a go once this one gets underway. Here we go!
Off at the Em
Does Claret and Blue clash with Red and White?
Good luck Robert
I don't have on FOX 2Go
I can only imagine buying one for a true exhibition match but not for a real match with anything at stake. The split scarves are an atrocity of the modern game.
Tomas Rosicky is on the pitch for the first time in 255 days
Chances at both ends at the start of this one - both sides are looking to start quickly.
I wouldn't think that Burnley's first strip would clash with Arsenal's.
Can understand the Cup match in Cambridge last week
Are Arsenal going to be the first club in history to get a hat-trick of Cup wins?
Citeh has taken the lead after 3 minutes at Villa Park
Sad that I think it is good that Citeh only made FOUR changes
Of course, the SS panel are watching the league matches
Why... I know they don't have the rights but having some bloke watching it on the box and talking about it isn't breaking any copyright laws
Charlton take the lead at Rotherham.
GOAL... Mighty Leeds take the lead after nine minutes!!
Burnley are getting some chances!!!
7000 Leeds fans have made the trip
Well done
Plymouth fall behind at home to Wycombe
Eastleigh, instead of playing Leeds, have taken the lead at Wrexham
Cambridge take the lead at Orient
Oh - how did that not go in!?
Wahay!!!!!!!!!!!
Rotherham tie it up against Charlton
It's Souleyman Doukara again on the scoresheet for us. He's been on a real tear recently.
Are you watching the Arse match?
Was the scorer of that scorcher of the shot in the last round
He's on loan?
No - I think he's ours. He's been with us for a couple of seasons.
Hull take the lead at Ryan's place in the Cup
Bury 0 Hull 1 at Gigg Lane
West Brom 1 Peterborough 0
Yeah - I am. Just a bit distracted by the missus.
I heard on Talksport during my walk that the draw is actually tomorrow and not Monday
Who's the bloke on loan from Boro...I think
Goal... The Arse take the lead
Chambers with the goal
Nice finish!
GOAL! Chambers scores - he loves scoring against the Turf Moor lot.
Great strike - 1-0!
Palace take the lead against Stoke
Ex Red Zaha with the goal
Wednesday score on Saturday at Shrewsbury in the Cup
Dunno who the Boro bloke is.
Mustapha Carayol #18
He's scored for your lot
Citeh two up from the spot
Iheanacho with a brace
Okay, here goes:
1. Arsenal
2. Chelsea
3. United
4. Leeds
5. Blackburn
6. West Ham
7. Everton
8. Aston Villa

15. Newcastle
16. Sunderland
17. West Brom
18. Middlesboro
19. Leicester
20. Derby
21. QPR
22. Blackpool
Still goalless in Mouth derby but chances at both ends at Fratton Park
Yeah - he scored for us in midweek against Brentford. Well in.
If we manage to get through this one today, I'd take a big pay day in the 5th round against one of the big boys. Fancy an Old Trafford rematch?
1-1 at the Em!!!!
GOAL! Our old boy Sam Vokes with the equalizer for Burnley!
What a mess for the Arse. Three chances to clear and it just went back out to a Burnley player. Finally a good ball came in and Vokes made no mistake with the header. Super finish!
And now Burnley have another corner. Arsenal have a fight on here.
Missed quite a few
