Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

The DNC - Day 1

Hi folks - I enjoyed chatting with a lot of you during the Trump Show in Cleveland last week. The Democrats are up this week from Philly. There will be quite a contrast. The RNC started last week with Charles in Charge, the beardy fellow from Duck Dynasty and a Slovenian supermodel in primetime. Tonight we've got Bernie Sanders and the First Lady kicking things off with a call for party unity. That's going to be necessary given the recent Wikileaks data dump, showing the rigged primary campaign process.

In any case, it's going to be lively this week - I hope that you'll drop by for a cocktail and a chat.

Afternoon, folks. It's a big day for the Democrats as their convention opens in Philly amid a cloud surrounding the latest email scandal. All eyes will be on Bernie Sanders, who ran a hard but honorable against HRC and is expected to endorse the Clinton/Kaine ticket as an obviously preferable alternative to the neo-fascist Trump/Pence slate.

A lot of today's news surrounds outgoing DNC chair Debbie Wasserman-Shultz, who was responsible for the emails deriding Sanders.

Earlier today, she was booed off the stage when she tried to address the Florida delegation. Just moments ago, it was decided that she would not be opening and closing tonight's events.

In an interview with Democracy Now, Wikileaks editor-in-chief Julian Assange compared choosing between Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton to choosing between two different infectious diseases and said that “personally, I would prefer neither.”

“Well, you’re asking me, do I prefer cholera or gonorrhea,” Assange said, in response to a question on his stance regarding Trump.

LOL!

Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, the mayor of Baltimore, current secretary of the Democratic National Committee and president of the US Conference of Mayors, has announced that she will take DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s place as the master of ceremonies this afternoon, gaveling in the Democratic National Convention after Schultz declared that she would give up the role.

Seeing outside Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia shows a larger and more fervent collection of protesters and protests then we ever saw in Cleveland.

A protest march is heading through downtown Philadelphia. Hundreds of largely Bernie Sanders-supporting demonstrators had gathered at city hall at 3pm, close to the DNC convention center, before walking south half an hour later.

“Bernie Sanders: not for sale” people are chanting, along with: “Clinton lied people died”.

One man is carrying a banner banner that says “Hillary Clinton for prison”. Earlier protesters had chanted “Lock her up” in reference to the Democratic nominee: a common Donald Trump supporter refrain.

There was the national anthem. They made it through the whole thing with no interruptions from outraged Sanders supporters. Steady as she goes...

Several speakers are having trouble getting past their introductions before being roundly booed by Sanders supporters near the stage. Steny Hoyer is the latest to get the raspberry treatment.

Kate and I are alternating between "The Bachelorette" and the convention coverage. At the 9 o'clock hour, Al Franken is giving Trump a right comedic roasting.

"As a proud alum of Trump U," Al quips. " I think we may be misunderestimating Mr Trump. Sure he’s scammed a lot of people, but did you know that Mr Trump’s school of ripping people off is ranked second in the nation? Right behind Bernie Madoff University. It’s also about learning from success experts like Scott Baio, Mike Tyson and of course a life-sized cardboard cutout of Mr Trump himself." Ba-dump!

It was amazing to see Franken and Sarah Silverman trying desperately to calm down the crowd, which is full of Sanders partisans. This is going to be a rocky week, if it continues.

Cory Booker is getting a lot of love on Facebook for his take down of Trump. It's a shame that he has been a leading proponent of charter schools. Dale Russakoff's excellent book "The Prize" is a searing expose of Booker's role alongside Chris Christie in undermining neighborhood public schools in Newark. https://www.amazon.com/Prize-Whos-Charge.../dp/0547840055

Powerful specifying from FLOTUS there. "I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves. I watch my daughters, beautiful, intelligent black young women, playing with their dog on the White House lawn."

At the first mention of Hillary Clinton, Bernie supporters start chanting "We trusted you!" Powerful moment.

Corporate profits are at all-time highs, Warren says. “There’s lots of wealth in America, but it doesn’t trickle down to hard-working families like yours... people get it. The system is rigged. It’s true.”

The line about the system being rigged gets strong applause, particularly from the Sanders sections.
