It's Time to Watch Football
Yesterday's matches nearly put me to sleep - not a Super Saturday at all. But today promises much, much better. We start with Manchester City, who have recently been going through a slump, up against a faltering Southampton side. Something's got to give. Then there is a big one from Stamford Bridge. Matches between Chelsea and United tend to bring fireworks - let's hope this one doesn't disappoint. Join me for all the usual banter here on the LOB.

Good morning, Bob. I'm up to join you and sure agree that hopefully, the matches are much better than yesterday
Some very interesting team news out of the Etihad:
Manchester City (an incomprehensible 3-2-4-1): Bravo; Stones, Kompany, Kolarov; Fernandinho, Gundogan; Sane, Silva, De Bruyne, Sterling; Aguero.
Subs: Fernando, Nolito, Caballero, Jesus Navas, Clichy, Otamendi, Iheanacho.
Southampton (a cohesive 4-3-3): Forster; Martina, Fonte, van Dijk, McQueen;
Clasie, Romeu, Davis; Tadic, Redmond, Austin.
Subs: Yoshida, Rodriguez, McCarthy, Ward-Prowse, Boufal, Hojbjerg, Stephens.
Hunk: Mark Clattenburg (Tyne & Weary)
Morning, MUR - I know that your presence is going to bring us some luck and better matches. Thanks for joining.
Vinnie Kompany and Aguero are back in the starting lineup for Citeh, which should help their chances against the Saints.
Thanks, Bob. I appreciate that. Hopefully I can be more motivational than yesterday. We can combine our superpowers and perhaps that will work. If UWS comes on board then that may be the clincher.
It sounds like an overly cautious variation of a 3-6-1 because Pep likes to overload the midfield against such attacking powers as the Saints.
They're off from the Etihad.
If Citeh avoid defeat then they will remain top of the pops as will you. Otherwise, Liverpool go top.
Did you see any of the Champions League match with Barca in mid-week - I heard it was quite the demolition.
Actually - I think it's Arsenal at the top, as Liverpool conceded that late goal against WBA. They needed a clear two-goal win to take the top spot.
Correct. Thanks for the clarification. My apologies to Gooners. I think Citeh do go top if they avoid defeat.
Southampton are likely to try to break through Tadic and feed Austin up front.
Romeu left a mark on the Ginger Winger there and he's still hobbling a bit - worrisome for Citeh.
I DVRED Barca vs Citeh and the Gunners vs LUDO. I watched Barca vs Citeh and it was a demoliition, but it was only 1-0 when Bravo was sent off on the hour mark for hand ball outside the box. Also, Messi had a hat-trick and without him I didn't think there was much difference between the sides.
This has been a quiet start, City pushing the pace but Southampton standing strong. I think we’ll be enjoying a fair few fouls in centerfield.
I watched the first half of the Gunners vs Ludo and will be watching the second half today
Unfortunately, it seems a lot like yesterday
Back from a short trip to the bog . Did I miss anything?
Fernandinho goes on a run down the right and just fails to pick out Sterling at the far post.
Not a lot, mate. The Guardian has described it as "sedate as a sedan."
I've been texting with our handyman who has been really erratic recently. We're trying to get some odd jobs done before the snow starts to fly.
Silva intercepts a poor ball from Clasie insdie the centre-circle and immediately releases De Bruyne on the left. He sees Sane making a run across the face of goal so tries a low cross, only for Van Dijk to stab behind for a corner which comes to nowt.
Interesting that Citeh have Sane and Liverpool have Mane in essentially the same position. Coincidence?
Classie sure didn't live up to his name with that wild finish
Definitely not coincidence. It's the way the universal energy flows, mate.
Great tackle by Van Dijck on De Bruyne
Tadic wins a corner off of Stones.
The corner from Tadic is headed away by fellow Serb, Kolorov, who has seen those over the years
GOAL !!!!REDMOND GIVES CITEH THE LEAD THANKS TO SOME REALLY HORRIBLE CITEH DEFEMDING
GOAL! What a calamity for Stones and Citeh and Redmond has snuck in to round Bravo and score.
Southampton are 0-1 up!
It's really simple to describe . Citeh were safe in possession when all of a sudden, Stones made a crazy back pass towards Bravo that was picked up by Redmond, who was less than a Stones throw away . He easily rounded Bravo and easily slotted home.
Gooners must be delighted. I guess whomever picked them to win the title would be in pole position in the PPP.
McQueen fouls Silva just outside the box following a corner.
GOAL !!!STONES REDEEMS HIMSELF AS HE SHOOTS IN THE FREE KICK FROM DE BRUYNE AT THE FAR POST.
No. He's ruled offside. I guess not.
GOAL! Stones gets immediate redemption with an easy tap in from a brilliant ball by Ginger Winger.
The goal has been ruled out for offside as Sergio Aguero was in an off-side position when he went to head the ball. Shame - both players needed a break there.
Romeu with a long range effort that is well wide, but great passing leading up to that attempt.
Stones does present Gareth Southgate with a problem. He's just about the complete central defender, but he is prone to crazy mistakes from time to time.
Morning Boys... what a lovely pass by Stones!
Missed his redemption piece. Was very confused when you announced a goal and it was still 0-1
Two wins for teams in red would do me good today!
Congrats for your lot yesterday
Gundogan drags a shot from just outside the box well wide.
I have to pay attention to my Giants too this morning
They are playing at Twickenham at 9:30
Good morning, UWS. Great to have you on board.
Hello guys . Hope you are all well . Watching the football on the iPad at the pub . Might put the NFL from Twickenham on as well because it's on BBC 2 .
Morning, UWS - thanks for joining us. I know that What's App is easier but we miss you over here. Sorry to nag.
Welcome Bruv
You have to change your icon...especially today!!
I have the NFL on my phone
Morning, Chelskilad! Great to have you on board, too, for the big one coming up next.
NFL....I know not what you speak of?
LOL! I'm looking forward to the banter between the Nocito brothers today. What are your predictions?
As the half ends, Citeh look a bit lost. They're front line has not been clicking at all.
Romeu really looks and plays like an assassin.
The Saints are one up at the half amidst boos from the home fans.
Drives me nuts
City down... 10 secs to go...passing the ball around the back
Hate modern day football....like City doing it though
Sad news. I don't know him but Daryl Upshaw, LHS Class of 1979, has died. RIP.
Good morning, Tony. It should be interesting in the late one with two United fans and a Chelski fan aboard.
I never heard of him, but my condolences.
What team will Jose pick today
Is he going to have the players stay on coach and just park it at the top of the box?
Is he going to attack?
Are United going to get to the stadium on time unlike their trips to WHL and UP last week
Rooney didn't travel down to London
More bad news for Pep Guardiola. De Bruyne has been subbed for Ihenacho. Must have picked up a knock.
The second half is underway
Is Jose paving the way for Rooney leaving the club in January?
He did put on an extra striker, so Citeh should be more attack minded.
There were rumors that he would be moving to a Chinese club last summer. I could see him moving at the end of the season.
Kolarov picks up a yellow for obstructing Charlie Austin as he flicks the ball beyond him.
Kolorov booked for obstructing Charlie Texas off a long ball from Gordon McQueen
Makes sense - I don't think he could even do a job in the MLS at this stage - his game has deteriorated that much.
Davis plays it out wide to Tadic and his cross has a lot of hang time , which is easily caught by Bravo.
Sterling has switched sides to play the Ginger Winger role out wide right now. I prefer De Bruyne in that role.
Im back from a trip to the loo
I wouldn't be surprised if it finishes 0-0 at the Bridge. I expect Jose to pick a cautious lineup. A shame as United showed that they can be entertaining when the played on Thursday
Welcome back. I had two trips in the first half. Fortunately, none of us missed a goal.
Giants already losing
bugger.. 1-1
GOAL! Ihenacho comes good almost immediately!
GOAL !!!!IHENACHO TIES IT UP WITH A GREAT FINISH . IT'S 1-1
Great cross ball by Fernandinho to Sane and he feeds the youngster for an easy finish.
1-1 Game on!
City will win this easily now!
It was all ticky tacky when out of the blue , Fernandinho played a long diagonal down the left to Sane . He mad e run and passed to Ihenacho, who got in front of a defender , who was playing a lot like Dick Van Dyke and scored easily from six yards out.
Naughty by Aguero on Charlie Texas.
Now it's Aguero into the book - he's getting frustrated.
Teams sit back too much.. what do expect to happen if you don't try to go forward.... I just don't get it
Did anyone see the EL match on Thursday vs Fenerbache? It was a return to OT for RVP, boos for Skrtel, the pantomime villain, and hisses from Fred for their manager Dick Advo CAT.
I agree, UWS. It was even worse yesterday.
Van Dijck is down injured. He defended more like Dick Van Dyke when Citeh tied it up.
I do think that there are more goals in this one.
Just saw the goals from Thursday
Rangers and Celtic playing in the League Semi Final today
Scoreless in the 35th minute
Winners meet Aberdeen in the Final
Ihenacho has a [ass come off of Fonte for a corner that is cleared.
That Final sounds like a real classic, LOL.
Is it another CL and EL week this next week? Should be able to watch more this week.
The Saints can't pass the ball to each other any more
Fred said that Advo Cats lads played like a bunch of girl cats. He used a word that has the same meaning. Harsh from Fred
Hoijberg is on for Classie, who really hasn't been in the second half.
Nice save by Forster
Forster with a great save from Gundogan
End to end stuff now at the Etihad. This match has really opened up.
Why isn't Forster England's #1?
United sitting in SEVENTH.. a win today would only take them up above their hosts into 5th..
A Sotton win would drop United to 8th
It's EFL Cup matches in midweek then the following week is a CL/EL week, followed by an international break at the end of that weekend.
That's a bit sexist from Fred. Is he a Trump supporter?
Oh - even better. I'm hoping that my Leeds boys can extend their EFL Cup run this season with another win.
I agree, Bob. I think Forster is in form keeper, but politics prevents him from starting.
Don't think this week is a European week. There is a fortnight between the matches agains the same opponent in the CL
It is League Cup this week I think. Manc derby and all
Not at all. He's just advocating for Advo CAT.
Correct, UWS. There will be a MAnc Derby. I think Leeds hosts the Canaries.
Tuesday
Arsenal Reading
Bristol City Hull
Leeds Norwich
Liverpool Spurs
Newcastle Preston
Wednesday
Southampton Sunderland
West Ham Chelsea
Man U Man C
LOL!
Can't wait for those fixtures - Tuesday seems like a good day for me.
Agreed, UWS. United are about the same in the standings , if not worse than when LVG was in charge, but I am definitely not advocating a return to his tactics.
Great save by Bravo from a shot by Austin.
I hope the matches are not ruined by reserve teams being fielded.
Austin with a shot.. he was wide open... should have done better with that attempt.... hit it away from the keeper!
Bravo pushes a way a powerful shot from Charlie Texas.
That shows that Citeh are not guaranteed a win today
Sorry. I meant to say NOT advocating.
Be better Southampton with getting the shot off
Look dangerous until it really counts
Sane wins a corner off of Fonte.
My brother was very wordy on here this morning, wasn't he?
Taken short to Sane and headed wide by Aguero.
I know City will score... of course.. I knew Arsenal were going to score yesterday
I hope I'm wrong twice
Where did Chelskilad go? Is he worried about the match?
Navas on for Bad Kompany as Pep appears to be going for it.
Goalless at ht at Hampden Park
He was a real chatterbox, LOL.
A little over ten minutes for Citeh to win this one. Seven of the top eight dropped points this weekend.
He's not really a Chelsea fan anymore
He's a Jose and Klopp fan
Just shows that those OLD Firm matches are classics. I think Celtic won 5- 1 when they met in the SPL.
I guess he was happy with the result on Monday
Teams are out for the Bridge Battle
Bad Guys
Court
Az
David Luiz
Cahill
Moses
Kante
Matic
Alonso
Pedro
Costa
Hazard
Good Guys
De Gea
Valencia
Bailly
Smalling
Blind
Herrera
Fellaini sigh
Lindgard
Pogba
Ashford
Ibra
Who would you have in Fellaini's spot, UWS?
Claude Puel shutting up shop as JWP is on for Charlie Texas.
Overtime Fellaini is in the side it means we are going for the draw
Stopping the other team and not trying to score
Carrick played well on Thursday. Defended well and was good with the pass
Fellaini will foul people, get booked and act like a moron
Ageuro goes on a nice solo run , but is pushed out wide and drags his shot wide.
Carrick
Where's Mata instead of Rooney?
They are both not in the side!
Martial?
I agree. I would prefer to see Carrick starting, but Jose prefers someone like Hair Bear in the lineup.
That makes sense.
Saints with a modern day corner... front post... easily cleared!
I think Lingard is replacing Mata. Is that correct?
Quite a good top of the table if this stays as is
City 20
Arsenal 20
Pool 20
Spurs 19
A win for Chelsea would put them on 19
A United win would put them only 3 points back
I think United host Burnley next Saturday
Nolito is being prepared to come on - why?
5 added minutes
Why?.... I know why.... big club not winning
This is a good time for United to meet City in the EFL Cup. They're definitely not firing on all cylinders.
Sane trots off to be replaced by Nolito for the remaining minutes.
Every time the ball goes in the box... i fear a blue is going to fall and they will get a pen
Of course, City would miss it
Both teams will play the reserves, so its' hard to predict the outcome.
Five minutes of stoppage time and I agree with UWS as to the reason why,.
It's possible. Citeh are that desperate that they may resort to doing anything to win a pen.
Forster is booked for time wasting - Soton just hanging on for the draw now.
Great tackle by Fonte for a Citeh corner.
City's last five matches
Celtic 3 City 3
Spurs 2 City 0
City 1 Everton 1
Barca 4 City 0
City 1 Sotton 1... hopefully
A slump?
2 minutes to go
Ihenacho has a shot blocked off of Vamn Dijck for another that is cleared as Citeh continue the late onslaught.
miscue by a Saint... will that cost them
The Pep effect, just like laughing gas, is starting to wear thin
Last chance saloon for Citeh now.
Will the streak continue in the League Cup at Old Trafford?
A definite slump for Citeh - they were flying in September. I don't know what's happened to them.
BLOW UP REF
Nice long pass from Bravo to Silva
BTW... why are Leeds matches almost always the last to finish??
Hard to predict the Manc Derby if the reserves are playing.
It happened to City last season too.
Strong start and then down
YES!!!
Ends 1-1
Mark Clattenburg blows the final whistle and Citeh are held 1-1.
An excellent result for Soton there, who finish 8th. Citeh drop another couple of points.
Off for walkies in a chilly Scotia
I'll be back for kick off
Might have to change my name soon . Don't like the way the club operates nowadays. Will have my full support behind United today . Sorry to disappoint those of you looking for a Bro v Bro banter thing .
No disappointment here, Chelski - just glad that you're on board today. Have a good pint for me.
I'm back from walkies with Sparky on a pleasant morning. I second Bob's statement.
I am back from a windy walk... come on Man U, Come on Man U Come on Man U
Teams in the tunnel..here they come
United have not done well vs Chelsea as of late
Please change today
Teams coming out at the Bridge.
Welcome Tone
Jose has gone to the correct bench... habit must have been tough to break
What kind of music are they playing?
Where is the Blue is the Colour
Well done Bruv... now make your mojo work
Jose was sacked by Chelski on my 50th birthday and was told to get out, stay out, and not come back. Is he permitted to be out on the field if given those instructions?
There it is after coming back from break
Rash or Lindy should roast Moses
We are off
Here we go, then - let's have a good one chaps!
BLOODY HELL
30 SECONDS!!!
They're off from SB
COME ON MAN UNITED!
Bloody hell - 30 seconds in! Sorry, chaps.
what they hell were United doing
BLOODY HELL!! CHELSEA TAKE THE LEAD 30 SECONDS IN
What were Smalling and De Gea doing
Terrible mistake there from Smalling who didn't realize that Pedro was slipping in behind him. Should have attacked it.
BTW, Celtic take the lead in the 87th min
What the hell... Bailly with an atrocious effort to clear.... do they know the game has started?????
so weak of an effort from Lindy
Wins a corner
I'm asking the same question on what is a nightmare begin for Jose. Not a single United player touched the ball as an innocuous long ball caught out Smalling and De Gea as the two couldn't figure out whowould get the ball. The answer was Pedro , who greatfuly walked the ball into an empty net.
Early doors, lads. Early doors. That should open things up. This has started with a crackling atmosphere.
Sorry . I'm a jinx . I needed Arsenal to win yesterday for my football thing at the pub . Now none of the Gooners are even talking to me .
USELESS corner by Blind
Why kick it there when there was NO RED SHIRT there!!
The corner was cleared as United are doing their level best to tie it up.
Sorry about the Gooners Tony
De Gea and Smalling sure looked like clowns , trying to defend a routine long ball. They were the Side Shows for which I am not interested.
Great movement from the United front line now. This is absorbing stuff.
Just over by Ibra
A decent cross by a modern day footballer....stunning
BLOODY HELL1 tHE ONE TIME vALENCIA PUTS IN A GOOD CROSS AND zLATAN HEADS OVER WITH A FREE HEADER FROM TWO YARDS OUT.
