Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Southgate's First Squad

England's new caretaker boss Gareth Southgate picked his first England squad earlier this week and it was full of surprises. The big news was Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard's recall from the U-21 squad up to the senior squad for the next two qualifiers. Stoke defender Glen Johnson was also inexplicably recalled after several years in the wilderness but then crocked himself and has been replaced by Burnley's Michael Keane. Raheem Sterling is another notable injury loss with Andros Townsend stepping into his spot.

So - you know the question - what's your starting XI for the match on Malta on Saturday and the match away to Slovenia on Tuesday of next week.

Goalkeepers - Fraser Forster (Soton); Joe Hart (Torino on loan); Tom Heaton (Burnley)
Defenders - Ryan Bertrand (Soton); Gary Cahill (Chelsea); Phil Jagielka (Everton); Michael Keane (Burnley); Danny Rose (Spurs); Chris Smalling (Man United); John Stones (Man City); Kyle Walker (Spurs).
Midfielders - Eric Dier (Spurs); Jordan Henderson (Liverpool); Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal); Michail Antonio (West Ham); Jesse Lingard (Man United); Andros Townsend (Palace); Theo Walcott (Arsenal); Dele Alli (Spurs).
Forwards: Wayne Rooney (Man United); Marcus Rashford (Man United); Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool); Jamie Vardy (Leicester).

For Malta, I'd put Forster in goal, pair Smalling with Keane, with Bertrand and Rose flanking.

Then I'd put Dyer in the sole holding spot, with Alli and Chamberlain in a 3-man midfield, with a front 3 of Vardy, Rashford, and Theo.

I'd be looking to involve Lindgard and Sturridge later on.

For Slovenia, I'd leave Forster in goal, I'd keep Smalling, paired this time with Stones, and flank them with Walker and Rose.

I'd still have Dyer but would partner him with Henderson, with Lindgard and Antonio running the flanks.

I'd have Rashford and Sturridge on from the start, and look to sub in Vardy, or Theo if we run into trouble.

You can see, there's no room for Rooney in either match for me.

I'm not impressed with Gareth's squad selection. Basically similar to Woy and Fat Sam other than one or two additions. I agree with the Gooner's selections, but Roon will probably feature in both matches. Sigh

If Brazil can have a Sideshow then surely Gareth should know better than to play the horror show that is Gary Cahill. Hopefully, he has a Hart to Hart about dropping with him about being dropped.Wishful thinking.
