A Snowy Derby Day Sunday
Good morning, gents - I'm up at the crack of dawn for a very Super Sunday in the Premiership. We start with Arsenal traveling to the South Coast, where it's been raining overnight. Then we've got two classic derby matches back to back, starting with Liverpool v. Everton from Anfield and then ending the day with the Manchester Derby from Old Trafford. Oh - did I mention it's been snowing in the UK? Right - be here sharpish for all the action.

The team news out of a sleety St. Mary's:
Southampton (3-4-2-1): Forster; Stephens, van Dijk, Yoshida; Bertrand, Hojbjerg, Romeu, Ward-Prowse; Tadic, Redmond; Austin.
Subs: Hoedt, Davis, McCarthy, Lemina, Boufal, Gabbiadini, Pied.
Arsenal (3-4-2-1): Cech; Koscielny, Mertesacker, Monreal; Bellerín, Ramsey, Xhaka, Kolasinac; Özil, Sánchez; Lacazette.
Subs: Wilshere, Giroud, Ospina, Iwobi, Welbeck, Maitland-Niles, Coquelin.
Referee: Bobby Madley
It's a trope that Arsenal don't like this kind of fixture - an away match where the weather is a bit dodgy and the ball has turned yellow. But they need a result in order to keep up their challenge.
And we're away in the first half at St. Mary's. Soton in their traditional kit and Arsenal, well, they're wearing some horrible fading blue number.
GOAL! Charlie Austin fires Soton into the lead after only three minutes!
A fourth goal in four games from Charlie, who's on fire at the moment. Lovely ball threaded to him by Dusan Tadic and Austin flicked it home with aplomb.
0-1 Saints!
Morning Bob,
I just got downstairs as the Saints take the lead.... they are all over' em!!!!
Nice graphic by the way
Cheers, mate! Welcome to the festivities.
We'll see what kind of mettle Arsenal have this season. They're starting to put some passes together.
Southampton could have scored four already!!
They have been called offside a few times when they actually weren't
Rebecca Lowe had an interesting comment on the weather in the pre-match coverage. She said that snow fall that would be considered ordinary back here is absolutely paralyzing the infrastructure in the UK this morning.
Arsenal break... The Gazette's last control blows it for Arsenal
Oh - great break there by Arsenal but Lacazette picked the wrong option in not playing Ozil in. That allowed the clearance to come in.
Little or no snow in Manchester and Liverpool...most of it stayed south
Southampton are employing an interesting tactic – when they lose the ball, Ward-Prowse drops from central midfield into the right of a back five. It’s worked well but as that breakaway showed, may be tested by quick breaks. Let’s see if Arsenal learn.
Players aren't as smart as you and I
Well, that's good to hear. I don't want to see some sort of farcical Snow Bowl footie.
That's definitely true, mate.
More sloppy Arsenal defending there. How did that not creep in the far post?
This is the same Southampton side that could score....they look very dangerous today!
Cracking good game now. End to end stuff.
Everything is being played with such pace... this is the type of game I like
Forget the damn slow possession game... sadly that is what Jose often plays
Was Austin out for a long-term injury? Why has he suddenly come back into form?
That's what I like the most about the sides that I'm enjoying this season: Liverpool and - apologies - Citeh. I expected it as well from Spurs but they've been really uneven.
I like how Charlie Austin plays
I do, too - big, old-fashioned center forward. I miss those kinds of players.
I totally agree with you.
I hate that it is Citeh and Pool that play the way I want my team to play
United started off the season like that winning 4-0 often but he went back to his old ways with the visit to Anfield.... he doesn't try to go out to beat the big teams. He goes out not to lose
United under Sir Matt, The Doc, Big Ron and SAF all went out to WIN every game.... they didn't always win but they went for it
United started the season playing that way; I don't know why Jose changed his mind.
I hate the England try and play like Spain or others... try and play like ENGLAND!!
I have been watching Youtube games of England in the early and mid 70s. They had some great players, played some great stuff, had chances after chances.... but did't qualify for any tournaments!
They wiped the floor with the Czech's at Wembley... England didn't qualify.. Czechoslovakia won it all!
Oh - good chance for Lacazette. He blew it well over the top. Poor form.
Agreed. It seemed like all of the top managers fell in love with that tiki taka approach that Barca were using, with two defensive middies and only one forward (not always a striker) up front.
Wow - we've reached stoppage time already. This half has whizzed by.
HT
Southampton deserve their lead... should have been more
Hope all the games today will be like this
Half-time - as usual, Arsenal are having trouble on the road. They go in 1-0 down at the interval.
Back to St. Mary's now for the second half.
I also hate all the talk when England are playing and all the talks is who is playing defensive midfielders(plural) when then they are playing Panama!!
Second half underway at St Mary's
Southampton better not sit back... it will be the death of them!
Soton seem to have dropped deeper and are now setting out to protect their lead. Shame. The first half was so good.
Second half has started the way modern day football is
Southampton sitting back and Arsenal passing it around
I don't get what managers think
Teams hardly ever hold on
United had a two goal lead last weekend and tried to hold on. Shouldn't have!!
Why didn't United try and score a third or fourth
If, and it is a big if, United take the lead...Jose will try and hold on to the lead...they won'!
I don't understand it either. You would think that footballers who are playing well would want to just go out and continue the fun.
There was a bank of six and three lined up just inside and outside the box.... I HATE IT
This has become a training pitch exercise, with Arsenal as the forward line trying to break down Soton's defense. It is tedious.
Southampton have a break... still look disinterested in scoring!
Did the manager say... Don't you dare score again!!!
The BIG teams don't like to be attacked.... then teams should do it!!!!
Off the bar by Soton
Big change for Arsenal - Welly coming on and Mert coming on. That is a bold move from Wenger.
Oh - Ryan Bertand should have wrapped it up there. Great lung-busting run to get into the box but his dinked shot rolled wide.
Saints should have scored again... hit the target
Look what happens when you attack
Now it's Jack Wilshere, who had a dynamite night in Europe in mid-week coming on for Granit Xhaka. More like like for like.
The Saints do have some threats on the break.
Bellerin gets booked for a cynical one.
Offside again..
Monreal looking for an Oscar, Emmy or Tony
My internet is in and out today!!
Southampton have been their worst own enemy in this second half
Now they are taking off Austin!!!!
WHY??
I wil have to take a walk in the snow after this one and before the Merseyside derby
GOAL! Olivier Giroud to the rescue for the Gunner!
There it is
Arsenal tie it up
Serves you right Southampton....they could now lose it!!
How does Giroud not play all the time?
I read that he might leave on loan to get playing time before the WC
Simple goal in the end. Decent cross in and Giroud with a glancing header into the corner. Football is easy.
1-1!
I'm actually quite glad that Soton haven't been rewarded for their tactics. They were good in the first half but just shut down in the second half. It was mad to take Austin off.
4 added minutes
Saints have a corner... don't seem to want to take it
Arsenal tried to break but it was broken up by a foul by Van Dyck. Naughty. Should have been booked. The Gunners are going for it.
Ramsey tries a flick... thought it was going in!
That should do it
I think Southampton threw away two points here
It is all over
I am off for walkies
That's it - a draw in the end when it could so easily have gone either way.
Next up, it's the Merseyside Derby. Here's the shocking team news, with six changes for Liverpool:
Liverpool: Mignolet; Gomez, Lovren, Klavan, Robertson; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Henderson, Milner; Mane, Solanke, Salah
Subs: Karius, Wijnaldum, Firmino, Coutinho, Can, Ings, Alexander-Arnold
Everton: Pickford; Kenny, Holgate, Williams, Martina; Gueye; Calvert-Lewin, Davies, Rooney, Sigurdsson; Niasse
Subs: Robles, Schneiderlin, Keane, Jagielka, Lennon, Vlasic, Lookman
Good morning, Bob and Dave. I slept in during the early match , but am here to join everyone for the snowy Derby matches.
Some interesting lineups , considering it's a big derby match
The Fake Scot and the Wee Neviller are the mouthpieces for this match
They're off from Anfield.
Hendo shoots well over after tackles snapping in like the red tide hot off the press.
Young Tom Davies down to an LUFC foul.
The free kick from Jonjo Kenny not Dalglish is just too far for Calvert-Lewin to connect.
Great block from young Jonjo off a volley from the lUFC Academy .
Then great sweeper keeping from Minnie as he made a superb slide tackle on Niasse off a long ball from Siggy.
The Fake Scot said that the snow has fallen, as advertised, but not accumulating. That sure helps with match proceedings.
Roon switches off and Andy Robertson went on a great run, but the final ball was cleared away. Then Salah and the Ox have shots blocked.
I'm back after a chat with the Gooner. He was none too pleased with the Arsenal performance and result this morning.
Morning, MUR - I'm glad to join you for this Merseyside Derby.
Salah has a shot blocked for a corner after Jonjo Kenny is tackled by Mane just outside the Toffees box.
Cheers, mate. The wee bit of extra kip will be helpful. I recorded that earlier match. Was it a decent match?
How is everything at Gooner Central?
I thought Craig Pawson was Gana bark for a foul. Mane appeared to be fouled by his compatriot.,
Things are good, mate - Steve's settling into his new routine of working from home really well.
The first half was quite good but then Soton sat back and tried to protect their lead in the second half, which was disappointing.
WI have a quiz question. What do Mane, Niasse, and Gana all have in common? Other than playing in this derby match.
I'm jealous. It would be fantastic to work from home.
Fat Sam has some of the coaching staff from the Foxes championship team in the form of Craig Shakespeare and Steve Walsh.
I know possession stats are sometimes meaningless, but 82%. CRICKEY!
It's snowing like the Dickens here in Fred-town now, and they're getting some of the white stuff at Anfield as well.
Joe Gomez Addams lucky not to be booked. Even Morticia would have been mortified.
Can you Adam and Eve it? It snowed here Friday morning , but yesterday it was sunny and 70. How is that for a rapid warm up?
I am back
Enjoyed listening to 5Live during the walk
They were talking about Klopp's strange starting line up
Could have been the team talk Big Sam in a nutshell
Hibs and Celtic drew Desmond...that is 6 goals that Hibs has scored against Celtic.... HALF of the total goals conceded by Celtic
Morning MUR
Snowing at Old Trafford apparenlty
That is quite a rapid warm-up, mate - one for the history books.
Welcome back, mate! Snowing here in Fred-town - how about at your patch?
We have a couple of inches on the ground
Jonjo Kenny was schooled by the LUFC Academy of excellence, committing a foul just outside the Toffees box.
Sunny today tho
Welcome back, Dave. Hope you're dressing warmly.
I just checked. It's 36 and snowing in Liverpool. Shouldn't be sticking to the ground. Sound correct?
Pickford was unable to prevent a deflected LUFC Academy effort going out for a corner.
I just checked . It's 35 with mixed precipitation in Manchester . Sounds like a lovely day.
Fat Sam was the last visiting manager to win at Anfield.
Sounds like it.
Yeah - too warm for it to stick.
Salah walks like an Egyptian and dances like Fred Astaire, but is tackled by the big blue wall.
It's 29F here in Fred-town where it is most definitely sticking.
Everton are all over the shop. It's surely just a matter of time, eh?
Siggy is the first player into the book on this derby day.
Siggy the first player of the match booked as he followed through on Hendo.
You know, this is a big day for The Ox. He's got the chance to really prove himself with the absence of Coutinho and Firmino. Not surprisingly, he's not rising to the challenge.
Harlingen
SUNNY SUNNY PTCLDY PTCLDY MOCLDY MOCLDY MOCLDY

The Harlingen forecast between today and Monday.
It's Gana be a long afternoon now as he goes into the book for a chop on Sane.
Goal...... great goal by the Egyptian Wizard!!
GOAL !!! SALAH GIVES lIVERPOOL A DESERVED LEAD WITH A SUPERB CURLING EFFORT.
Unstoppable!!
GOAL! It's that man Mo Salah again, curling a lovely shot into the top of the net to put the Reds in front.
Gana had been booked for a foul on international teammate, Mane. The free kick was taken short and quick . Several passes later , Salah turned Cuco Matrtinia inside and out then beat Pickford with a superb curling effort.
Who do Egypt have in the World Cup...glad England don't have them
That's Mo Salah's 13th of the year, one ahead of Harry Kane, who had a brace against woeful Stoke yesterday.
Ashley Williams heads out a shot from Salah for a corner or else it could have been 2-0. Then the Ox is not tot far off with a long range effort off the corner.
They're in Group A with Russia, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.
A pair of stoppage time minutes and Mane oh Mane as he drags his shot horribly wide with just Pickford to beat . A square pass was a much better option.
I think Egypt can finish second behind Uruguay.
Half time
Everton really needs to try harder and do better!!
Half-time arrives at Anfield. Liverpool go in 1-0 up and it's difficult to imagine the Toffees getting back into this one.
The Red Tide is deservedly one up at the half.
The second half is underway from a snowy Anfield.
Morgan Schneiderlin and Aaron Lennon on for the second half - Fat Sam has seen enough.
A double substitution from Fat Sam as Schneiderlin is on for Tom Davies and Lennon is on for Niasse.
Some clarification: Lennon is from the LUFC Academy, not one of the Merseyside Beetles.
Jonjo Kenny heads out a cross from the Ox for a corner after a nice back heel from Salah
Salah goes so close with header at the back post
The ball broke out to Milner and a superb LUFC Academy cross was headed by Salah, who had a free header.
I really wanted Liverpool to lose some points for dropping two of their best players
Each side has an LUFC Academy winger on the pitch/
A tame effort from Clavert-Lewin on a rare Toffees attack off a nice pass from Roon.
Jonjo Kenny has performed better than some of his experienced teammates.
A corner from Salah goes through a sea of players and last goes off Holgate Street for a corner.
Does Klopp really need to throw Coutinho and Firmino into the mix now? Debatable. Everton aren't really pressing their claim yet.
LUFC Academy in the house!!
Salah has a shot come off of Roon for yet another corner.
Mo Salah threatens again and it's Wayne Rooney back defending. Not a good sign for Everton.
The corner is out for another. The shot from Salah is halfway to Manchester.
Yes. It's Lennon. Not the one married to Ono.
Welcome back, Bob. I agree. Fat Sam picked an inexperienced side for such a big match. He should be blamed too. So should wee Sam , who has played in many of these derbies/.
Aaron hasn't had a sniff yet.
Solanke has a shot come off of Siggy for another Pool corner.
Agreed. He's been a spectator because the ball has been camped in the Toffees half.
Line ups announce
United: De Gea: Valencia, Smalling, Rojo, Young; Matic, Herrera; Rashford, Martial, Lingard; Lukaku
City: Ederson; Walker, Otamendi, Kompany, Delph; Fernandinho, De Bruyne, Silva; Sane, Jesus, Sterling
Typical...last week The Gazette definitely out... starts
This week, Silva out.... starting
A win for Liverpool today will see them leapfrog Chelski into third place. They deserve it - they've been much better than the Blues recently.
Arsenal, despite dropping points away to Soton this morning, will stay in 5th, a point better than Spurs.
Oh - great effort from The Ox there to fizz a ball over to Mane. Any kind of touch would have directed it in.
Agreed. The Toffees have been "frozen" out
As I texted earlier in the week, the Premier League gets FOUR automatic spots in the group stages next season
I read Lacazette earlier this morning and did not read about him playing in the Manc derby.
Oh - great free kick there and Joe Gomez had a great chance. Needed to keep it down.
Wow - that's a big change - no playoffs for the 3rd and 4th sides?
OH!! Nearly 2-0 as Gomez Addams heads inches over from a free kick. The Toffees playing a lot like Morticia and Puggsly.
Correct, Bob. No playoff for the fourth placed team. All four automatically qualify for the group stage.
Goalscorer Mo Salah comes off to be replaced by Firmino.
A standing ovation for Salah, who is replaced by Firmino. Not exactly what Fat San wants to see.
Klopp looking pretty clever as Fat Sam doesn't have anywhere near that quality on the bench.
It was only 4th that had to have a play off
Any changes in the EL format?
Siggy heads out a cross from Gomez Addams for yet another Pool corner
First real chance for Lennon to swing a cross in and he earns Everton a rare corner. Fat Sam urges them forward.
Sorry. Other way around as Minnie punched away the corner.
I was looking at the Toffees bench and almost took the two Sams for the two Ronnies.
Fifteen minutes left for Everton to try to get something here.
Oh my - Everton have a penalty!!!
PENALTY TO THE TOFFEES AS CALVERT-LEWIN APPEARED TO GO DOWN EASILY UNDER THE CHALLENGE FROM LOVEREN. SUPERB LONG BALL FROM ROON.
Phil Neville is a paid up member of the Defender's Union and he thinks it's a soft penalty but there was contact.
Roon, the pantomime villain, to take.
Wayne Rooney steps up and....roofs it!
1-1 in the Derby match!
just out of loo.... ROONEY!!!
DIdn't Roon enjoy that moment.
GOAL !!! ROON BLASTS IT DOWN THE MIDDLE TO TIE IT UP CLEARLY AGAINST THE RUN OF PLAY.
The Little Neviller is still complaining that there was "no contact whatsoever." He is blind.
Craig Pawson will be in the Liverpool doghouse and Klopp will be barking at him once this match ends.
Don't get it... he's a blue half and red in Manc
Just pushed him in the back
Coutinho came on for the Ox.
Pool for punished for not taking their chances when dominating the match
Rooney must have loved that!!
Must be his first derby goal?
He is the highest Manc derby scorer of all time
It must be - he's waited his whole career for that moment. Everton blue through and through.
Euro draw tomorrow at 6 am est
I have a question. They were showing pictures off previous Mersey Derbies. Who was the player marking Keegan?
First derby in 13 years... his first goal
Where's the picture?
The final roll of the dice from both managers .Danny Ings on for Solanke for his first match in ages. Fat Sam shutting up shop as Jags is on for Roon.
The had the picture on during the halftime show. Big blond player marking Keegan.
Schneiderlin booked for a challenge on Milner. Booked for being a flop at United or for fouling an LUFC Academy player.
Free kick chance.. Coutinho... over the wall... saved
The free kick from Coutinho is Picked Ford out of the air.
Decent hit there but gathered by Pickford.
Andy Robertson with a poor cross. Time for John to come out of retirement.
Coutinho has a shot deflected for a corner.
Loveren heads the corner from Coutinho well over.
