My Favorite Day of the Season!
It's my favorite day of the season: FA Cup 3rd Round Saturday. Back in the day, all of the matches started at 3pm GMT. Now they're spread out from Friday to Monday evening. The action starts early this morning with Jamie Vardy's Leicester City returning to his former club Fleetwood Town for one of those romantic match-ups that only the Cup delivers. Join me for all of the fun, won't you?

Here's what destroys the magic, though - modern managers. Claude Puel of course is resting nearly his entire first team, so Jamie Vardy? Not even on the bench today. Disgusting.
Here are the sides out on the pitch at Fleetwood now:
Fleetwood Town: Neal, Coyle, Eastham, Bolger, Bell, Schwabl, Glendon, Dempsey, Burns, Cole, Hunter.
Subs: Jones, Pond, Hiwula, McAleny, Cairns, Biggins, Sowerby.
Leicester City: Jakupovic, Amartey, Dragovic, Benalouane, Chilwell, Barnes, King, James, Adrien Silva, Slimani, Gray.
Subs: Iheanacho, Albrighton, Hamer, Maguire, Okazaki, Ndidi, Choudhury.
Referee: Simon Hooper (Wiltshire).
Good morning, Bob. I'm up to join for what is my favorite day of the season too.
Fleetwood about to get us underway in their biggest match of the season - both sides playing in their traditional colors. Kevin Keatings and Matt Jackson on the mics, whoever they bloody are.
They're off from Highbury
Morning, MUR - thanks for making an early start to your day with me.
Your mate, Kevin Keetings , stated that Jamie Vardy is out injured and would havestarted because it would have been against his former club
Cheers. Glad to enjoy the pleasure of your company and to be around for the occasion.
Slimani heads wide from the free kick from Damari Gray
A nice bright start to this game. Fleetwood rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck in.
Did you hear the pre-match music that was playing?
What would you bet Jamie Vardy will be magically cured by the next Premiership match?
Also, one of your old mates is in charge of Fleetwood. Remember him? He has a great haircut 100.
I did - a bit of Fleetwood Mac for the punsters in all of us, eh?
How could I forget Uwe? He was in charge at ER for a nanosecond under Cellino. What memories!
Nearly a real balls-up at the back for Leicester. That would have been interesting if it had flown in.
Fleetwood have a corner and the header is way off target. It's cl;eared, but your old mate's side is getting stuck in, as you stated.
Hunter has a long range effort that is merely catching effort for experienced reserve keeper, Jakupovic.
Harvey Barnes win the Foxes first corner of the match
Chris Neal easily catches the corner from Damari Gray
I agree. Vardy should be back quick as a fox next weekend.
How could we not go for Fleetwood after they used on of my puns. UWS will not be pleased.
Early problem for Rosler - Easton is going to have to limp off. Nathan Pond, a world record holder for playing in eight different leagues, is coming on. Cor!
David Eastham will be devastated to go off injured. He is replaced by Nathan Pond, who hold a world record for Fleetwood Town. I know what it is. Should that be an LOB quiz question?
Now it's Slimani who's down for the count. It's the sub Pond who's done him in.
I guess you do know the records, but I believe it is seven different divisions. Sorry for being picky!
It probably should be one of these days. I should really start the puzzlers up again. We used to do those regularly when the blog was young.
Bob will not be pleased to see Jamie Vardy in the stands playing with the baby instead of watching the match, definitely looking none too interested. Pathetic!
Was that what Keeting said? Well - he is the man with the microphone, even if I've never even heard of him.
Vardy looks like he's really suffering today. My condolences go out to him and his family.
Nathan Pond must have skill as well. You don't increase by the levels of difficulty you have by just being a thug. Mental strength is required as well to obtain that recorsd. Well done to him.
I think BT Sports is doing the FA Cup instead of SKY . That might explain us not recognizing the announcers.
Leicester have enjoyed 61% of possession so far. They haven’t done a great deal with it. Uwe Rosler will be very happy with his team’s start.
Damari Gray goes on a long solo run and wins a corner after being too fast for several of the Arsenal players. Sorry. I mean Fleetwood.
Oh - Andy King had a free header from a corner there. Put it over.
Andy King heads well over from the corner. The first real chance of the match for either side
Well, it is Highbury Stadium, isn't it?
To be honest, other than the header the only events of note have been the world record holder coming on and Vardy playing with his baby in the stands while his wife is trying to be like Vickie Becks.
Yes. You're on top form this morning. Well done.
A shame that aren't more footballers like Nathan Pond. He's a throwback to our time at Lakenheath
I don't like the fact that the Foxes are trying to play like Barca instead of their own style. It's completely taking the fun out of this match
It hasn't been a classic, has it mate? Andy King's header over the top and that wayward backpass that the Leicester keeper had to turn around have been the only chances.
Damari Gray has a shot deflect into the side netting for a corner off a long possession.
You would think that the likes of Damari Gray and Slimani would want to use this opportunity to seize a chance to force their way into the first team.
The corner is headed out for a Foxes throw.
Gray has been a regular since Puel took over and has probably been the greatest benefactor of him taking over. Slimani and Andy King should be taking advantage of this opportunity.
There is one other Cup match being played and it's a NE Championship Derby. The Teesiders are one up vs the Black Cats thanks to a goal by Rudy Gestede.
A free kick from Damari Gray is headed out and young Harvey Barnes volleys well wide.
No wonder why Fred was getting into mischief.
Adrienne Silva is down for the Foxes in a rare start. Not a good debut for him.
He picked up the injury , fouling Scwabbl.
What's Fred up to this morning?
I just heard a flock of Seagulls in the background.
He ate brekkies and is now napping next to the computer.
Chillwell wins a corner off a goal kick from Jakupovic
A complete waste as a Foxes foul is called off the corner from Gray.
Highbury is definitely the classic lower league stadium
Should be lots of injury time at the end of this half.
That sounds like the usual Saturday morning hijinks for Fred. How will he celebrate a Black Cats Cup win?
A pair of minutes of stoppage time.
The Black Cats are currently trailing , so he's probably not a happy camper.
Slimani tried the acrobatics from that late corner - didn't really come off.
It's 0-0 at the half to the delight of the home fans. Not exactly a classic.
Half-time arrives at Highbury. Not a classic. Leicester are honestly there for the taking if Fleetwood can muster a half chance in the second half.
Danish international, Braithwaite has put the Teesiders two up vs the Black Cats.
Morning Boys
I am here for the second half
Looks like I didn't miss much
Terrible that Vardy isn't playing against his old club!
He's not injured!
Back from the bog for the second half. About two minutes in and still 0-0/
I'm back with an onion bagel and a cuppa for the start of the second half. It can only get better.
Good morning, Dave. I agree with you 100%
Welcome back., Bob. The Teesiders are two up vs the Black Cats at the half.
Great to hear you survived your first week back, Dave. Did you have any snow days?
Fleetwood win a corner
We had a two hour delay yesterday. Hardly anyone came which was great
The Fleetwood fans are making a good day out of it, come what may.
It is so cold outside!! -2 with a wicked windchill
These Premier League sides really bug me with their treatment of the FA Cup A mid table team with no chance of relegation should want to win silverware. EVERY team apart from City can't win the title... they better all want to win the Cup
This day used to be so great... now you have youth teams playing!
Athletico Madrid defeated Getafe 2-0, but played part of the second half with ten men as Diego Costa received a second yellow for excessive celebration once he put Athletico two up.
ooh, Fleetwood Mac almost take the lead. Almost an OG
Morning, UWS - glad to hear that you're keeping warm out there on the tundra. Welcome!
Yikes about Costa!
He'd scored two in two
Cole wins a Fleetwood corner as Belllouane nearly turned the cross into his own goal.
Agreed, Dave. The Cup needs to be taken seriously as it was when we were in high school.
I'm with you, UWS. Modern managers have no respect for the traditions of the game.
Albrighton on for the disappointing Harvey Barnes.
Burns wins a a Fleetwood corner off of Chillwell.
Bolger heads wide from the corner.
UWS will be interested to note that they were playing a Stevie Nicks song prior to kickoff. Why would that be?
Oh - now Schwabel has a chance off the volley. Straight at the keeper, unfortunately. Fleetwood are going for it Come on!
The next corner is headed away by VChillwell then a long range powerful volley from Schwabbl is straight to Jakupovic. Now Fleetwood have another corner.
The next corner is fisted away by Jakupovic and Schwabbl heads well wide.
The halftime highlights showed that Fleetwood should have had an indirect free kick in the Foxes six yard box because Jakupovic turned around an intentional back pass to avoid an embarrassing OG
Teams really need to go out try. to win... both teams just running around on a pitch
I'm worried that Thomas Christiansen won't take the Cup tie tomorrow morning seriously and won't play a first team.
Okozaki is fouled by Schwabbl about thirty yards from the Fleetwood goal.
That was a horrible free kick from Albrighton. What on earth!
Haven't seen much from Ashley Cole's son Devanti this morning.
I wonder why the Leeds match is a bloody early kickoff. I will try to get up for that one.
Close thing for Leicester. Gray hangs up a cross and Slimani was inches away.
A cross from Gray eludes the keeper and Slimani volleys into the side netting.
So what's the rule on these matches. Do they play any extra time these days or just straight on to a replay.
Devanti , like his dad, is a left back wearing a red shirt with white sleeves, but the younger Cole it's more defensive minded than his dad unless it's due to the opposition/
Yeah - really bloody early for you. Quite a sacrifice.
McAleny on for Burns for Fleetwood Mac now.
Uwe seems to be settling for a draw as midfield player, McAleny, is on for Burns, a striker.
They have replays up through the Fifth Round. Starting with the quarters it must be settled in one match.
Three out of the five goals yesterday were scored really late. Will the same pattern follow in this match?
I know there is a replay for the third round. I think it might change in latter rounds this season
What's on the menu at 10 AM
Citeh vs Burnley on FS 1
The Cottagers vs the Saints on FS 2
Exeter vs the Baggies on the link
starting last season they did away with replays starting with the quarters. There are replays up through the Fifth Round.
I would love to see Nathan Pond score the winning goal.
Which one are you planning to watch, mate?
Nathan Pond getting stuck in as we would expect after working his way up through the leagues. Started his career at virtually pub level.
It's Three Degrees Fahrenheit here in Fredonia. Calls for a song, eh?
Probable Citeh vs Burnley on the telly with Exeter vs the Baggies on the link.
I didn't know that there were that many tiers to English football. Great shot of Highbury there from the air.
It's supposed to be sunny and 70 today. Why not visit Harlingen?
Slimani comes off after a less than impressive display. Former Citeh man Ienacho on for him.
Fleetwood have won a surprising amount of corners this half.
Would love to see one in off the bum for Fleetwood right about now - come on!
That was the final roll of the roulettte wheel from Puel. He played for Monaco so he should have plenty of experience with that
Andy King concedes yet another corner to Fleetwood.
Bolger heads well over as it bounced off the roof of the small stand.
I found a fascinating link on Wikipedia a few years ago about the English Football Pyramid. It's a great read. There are more levels than you could ever imagine.
Free kick for Fleetwood now - fizzes across the area.
Not much happening is there??
Modern day football!
What did they say about the tiers of English football?
Seven?
Would a team like the one UWS played on - Safepac - be on that pyramid? I never considered that.
Not a single shot on target for the Foxes. Rather pathetic against L 1 opposition.
Apparently Nathan Pond, a sub for Fleetwood today, holds the world record for playing at seven different levels of English football. I doubt that he's played above this level, so there probably are more levels than even that!
Safepac would probably be about the twelfth tier.
Good old Safepac!!!
No. This is the highest level. Other than a brief spell on loan at Grimsby he's played his entire career at Fleetwood. He should be proud of his record. Quite an achievement , IMHO.
I'd even take a dodgy penalty call right about now.
That's an accurate description of Pond's world record, Bob. Spot on.
Everyone looking forward to this match but it has just been dull
The Prem teams complain about the matches... why not play the first teamers...get a lead and then rest them
Now, they have another 90 or more minutes added to their schedule
The footballing tradition in Britain is amazing.
Only a pair of stoppage time minutes. Why so few?
Not a chance of a dodgy penalty. The Dean of refs is not officiating this match.
That's always the risk. I thought that Liverpool and United were going to have that added fixture at one point yesterday. I'll bet that Arsenal play a second team against Forest tomorrow and they might come a cropper. Forest have just replaced their manager and are playing a lot better.
What are your thoughts on keepers just guessing a side.
They should never guess. They should react!! Every shot during the entire match they react so fast... for a pen...let's just dive and be lucky!!
If the pen is good enough it will beat you but why not try and save!
OH!!! Nearly a flukey winner as Jakupovic was nearly beaten at his near post . The shot from Burn came off the post and into the keeper's arms.
All over
Useless
Fox just as bad as ever
What is the World Cup going to be like!
It finishes 0-0 a, but Bob nearly got his wish of a late winner from Burn
Oh - off the post from Fleetwood. So close to a Fleetwood winner.
And that's it - a disappointing 0-0 result to start the day.
Off to take Sparky walkies ahead of the 10 AM matches on a lovely South Texas Day.
I'm off clear the driveway. I'll be back for the 10am kickoffs.
Just noticed that Boro are two up at home to Sunderland heading into added time
I am going to try and take Shad for a walk...if we can handle the weather
Back with Sparky from walkies to watch three matches.
Credit to Alan Pardew for naming close to a full strength lineup away to Exeter
They're off from the Etihad and the Cottage./
I'm back for kickoff after some serious shoveling in the driveway. I've had my workout for the day and now it's the 3pm GMT kickoffs!
And now from Exeter in a battle of stripes. The Gooner will not be pleased to see Lee MAson in charge at Exeter even though L2 may be his level.
GOAL !!!! RUNNED ON GIVES THE BAGGIES THE LEAD 71 SECONDS IN WITH A CRACKING FINISH FROM THE D. GREAT MOVE DOWN THE LEFT.
Exeter were caught down the Baggies left and a poor clearance off a cross did not help matters.
I have to give it to him - Pep Guardiola has put out a decent side against Burnley:
Bravo, Danilo, Stones, Otamendi, Zinchenko, Gundogan, Fernandinho, Silva, Sterling, Aguero, Sane.
Burnley: Pope, Lowton, Long, Mee, Taylor, Gudmundson, Cork, Westwood, Barnes, Hendrick, Vokes.
Wigan take an early lead at the Cherries. They won there in the Third Round the year they won the Cup, but the roles were reversed from what they are today.
Will Grigg's on fire!!! The Northern Ireland international has fired Wigan Athletic ahead at Premier League side Bournemouth after just four minutes.
Looks like Sean Dyche put out a decent side too as has Alan Pardew.
J Rod wide with a long range effort similar to the move that led to the goal
Poor show by the Black Cats this morning - is Fred hiding under the bed now?
Ridsdale's lads take the lead at Wycombe
First real chance now for Citeh - Silva and Gundogan can swing this one in from either foot. Silva drives in and its scrambled out for a corner.
Nearly a second for the Baggies as Krustkowiak led a counter and found J Rod down the right . He made a nice pass to Chris Brunt , whose close range effort was kick saved by the keeper. Looks like along afternoon for the L 2 side/
Kieran Gibbs is down injured with Hal Robson -Kanu warming up.
Leeds United get a shout-out. Of course, it because we sold Charlie Taylor. Burnley are my least favorite Premier League side because they've poached so many players from us recently.
Sadly, Gibbs is led towards the tunnel.
Oh - Aguero worked his way to the by-line and somehow Burnley got the ball cleared again. It's all hands to the pump already.
Charlie Taylor assisted on on the goal Monday against Liverpool.
Gooner will be all broken up about that.
You will be pleased that Barnsley have taken the lead at the New Den
Hal Robson-Kanu on for Kieran Gibbs
Seabourne booked for a foul on Runned on.
High and wide by Krystkowiak as the L 2 side could not get a free kick clear.
Westwood pushes over Aguero right outside the box. Dangerous one here.
Ashley Westwood fouls Aguero in the D after pass from Gundogan and Silva
Citeh players lining up to take this one.
Gundogan takes and it's straight into the wall.
Is he broken out about Gibbs going off injured or Lee MAson given his assignment at Exeter.
Ashl;ey Barnes heads Burnely's first corner across the box then Citeh counter.
Villa take the lead vs Posh
Westwood with another foul. This time on Silva
Kieran Gibbs getting injured. Not sure that Gooner will be that sympathetic.
IS it true that Kate is not starting against the Saints due to a hectic schedule?
By the way, Gooner is en route to the in-laws making a treacherous drive down Route 95 to NC today. He's hoping to be able to put his feet up with a cuppa tomorrow when Arsenal take on Forest.
Kate says that that is the "official" reason that she is giving for not playing in the Cup this weekend.
Rochdale take the lead at Donny Trump in an all L1 Cup tie.
GOAL! Ashley Barnes scores a shocker to take the lead at the Etihad!
GOAL !!!! ASHLEY BARNES GIVES BURNELY A SURPRISE LEAD AT THE ETIHAD.
What a clanger by John Stones there, allowing Barnes in to romp through on goal and beat Bravo at his near post.
0-1 Burnley!
It was a route one goal with a horrible error from John Stones. A long clearance from Nick Pope was headed on then a horrible slice by John Stones led in Barnes , who scored with a great finish past Ederson.
Mark Hughes has put out an understrength Stoke side today and he might pay the price for it. Coventry are 1-0 up at the Ricoh (I got it right this time!) through a Jordan Willis header.
GOAL !!!! J ROD TAKES ADVANTAGE OF POOR DEFENDING FROM THE L2 SIDE . A CROSS FROM ROBSON-KANU WAS HEADED STRAIGHT TO J ROD , WHO FINISHED EASILY PAST THE STRANDED KEEPER FROM SIX YARDS OUT
Runned on thought he had his second and the Baggies third, but was called for a foul
Sorry. Bravo, not Ederson.
I am back as City fall behind
It won't last
Listening to Talksport as they are going around the grounds
Bournemouth are now TWO down at home to Wigan
GOAL !!! JWP GIVES THE SAINTS THE LEAD AT THE COTTAGE.
The Toon take the lead vs the Hatters
It started from the back and pass from Boufal was not cleared and JWP finished easily past David Button./
The Evil Blades take the lead at Portman Road.,
Blades one up at Portman Road
Free kick to Burnley...why do players ALWAYS grab the shirt...just defend!!
