Russia 2018 - Day 12!
After the extended lunch break, we've got the Group B matches. Iran, who play Portugal today, are still in this one, after their opening victory over Morocco, who have been eliminated. Spain play Morocco and will want to continue their good form, which sees them joint top with Portugal. Most odds makers are predicting that the Iberian duo will move on, but who will top the group? Those matches start at 2pm EST.
Join me today for these crucial matches!

Morning Boys
A little confused with your picture used today. The Argies aren't playing today!
Kick off times are the same as normal except for no early match.
I will be having one match on my TV and the other on my laptop
Of course, the first set of matches will have the Hosts and Uruguay on the TV and the pointless match on the computer
Not sure about the second of the double headers
Lexi already being the idiot saying he's gifting England 5th in his power ranking
Explain to me why Belgium are #1 and England #5... they have IDENTICAL records against IDENTICAL opponents!
What a numpty
Very confused with telly schedule for BBC and ITV
It seems to say that the same channel has both games...that's not possible!
Just checked it out
Uruguay Russia is on ITV and the other game is on ITV4
Iran Portugal is on BBC1 and the other game on BBC4
Why on earth are they doing that!! Why not one match on BBC and the other on ITV!!!
Very strange
I think my website still have those channels
Just checked..... both BBC and ITV 4 are on my website
Fox showing a long pre-game than both BBC and ITV
Morning, UWS - Sorry, I'm used to using the images on the Guardian WC site. That was their lead image for some reason. I'll swap it out.
I'm in a meeting during most of this morning's first matches, but I'll try to sneakily check in via my iPad.
No need...just wondering
Meeting shmeeting
I have to dig a hole out in the backyard today..
93 degrees at kick off
Bob was right about the kick offs
They are at 10 and 2
Good morning, Bob and Dave. Slept in, went walkies, ate brekkies, and fed the pets. Just the liter box left to empty
Just tuned in ITV4 for the other match on the computer
So, who will win this group? Russia only need the draw
Finally, we will be able to start filling out the brackets
Morning MUR
I'm watching the match on the local FOX, which is Russia vs Uruguay from a hot Samara. It's 81 with little breeze. Hot for spectators as well.
Sorry. I meant 91 and little breeze
I think Russia will win the group. The Senegalese ref gets us underway from Samara.
They are off in important game
My second link just started too... behind.... but it is delayed on line anyway
Uruguay with the first chance and a long range effort from Vecino is not too far wide.
When are you staying in WNY until?
Cavanio down. It didn't appear to be a malicious challenge. Cavani gets up and the ref tells him to shut it. The challenge was hard, but would have been fair in the Prem
Why oh why aren't Russia wearing red!!
RED AND BLUE DON'T CLASH!!!
United and City can play each other
Liverpool Everton
Chelsea Arsenal
I will be leaving around 5 AM on the 8th.
Agreed, UWS. It is a great way to sell extra jerseys to make a few extra Bob.
DAMN
I was hoping you guys could come out here
You should change your flight and leave from Albany!
FS 1 has the Red Sea Derby . Moses did fail to part the Red Sea for those two.
5 a.m.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will try to do that. I will see if there are any seats still available. Great idea.
It was almost $200 extra to fly later in the day. Not many flights available
Free kick for the SAs inside the D
Vecino fouled in the D off a deflected pass from Suarez.
Gazinsky booked for that
Suaraz to take....ONE NIL!!
keeper side
33rd game in a row with a goal
GOAL !!!SUAREZ SCORES WITH A TRADEMARK FREE KICK
Wall pushed out of the way
Why would they review it? Looked perfectly fair. It's allowed.
Cherries Off to take a Russian free kick.
I fear the nothing game could be scoreless
Of course, why no go out and entertain...got nothing to lose!
ITV4 just showed the goal split screen
Free kick deflects off a Russian player then cleared.
Russia go close down the other end
Shot saved and rebound just cleared
Cherries Off blasts a close range effort straight at Muslera . The rebound cleared for a corner.
Corner...keeper collects
Muslera catches the corner from Samedov
This ref doesn't appear to be doing any favors for the Russians.
First true test for both sides.
Cherries Off has a pass cut out for a corner.
Header from a corner.. headed down and over
Great corner from Cherries Off that is headed into the ground by Dzuyba and over
The pushing in the wall was by the Russian moving two Uruguayans
Russia has woken yup since conceding the goal and has been the better side since.
That extra push sure didn't help them
For the most part, teams have been going forward a lot more than I thought they would. Thankfully not as much possession crap
Liverpool reject, Coates , in the heat of the Uruguay defense. Not a good feeling about that
Agreed. it was really horrible in the 2016 Euros. The teams playing deep have almost been entirely eliminated. Good riddance.
Golovin with a foul,
GOAL
Salah opens his WC account
Game 34 with a goal
Free kick headed out for a Uruguay corner.
TWO NIL URUGUAY!!
GOAL !!! URUGUAY GO TWO UP.
Salah with a one on one with keeper and chips it wide!
tHE CORNER WAS HEADED OUT AND A LONG RANGE EFFORT FROM lAXAT TOOK A WICKED DEFLECTION off of Cherries Off , who appears to be credited with an OG
Well done, Salah
How will Russia respond two down against a team that's really strong at shutting up shop.
Smolinikov booked for a rash foul on Cavani . Fans jeer, but theior side is not exempt from the rules.
How did Uruguay not go three up????
Betancur has his close range effort blocked wihtth just Akinfeev to beat
Second goal now being credited to Laxalt. His first ever for Uruguay
So it looks like Uruguay will play the second of the Iberians
Russia to play the first
Betancur with a clumsy foul just outside the Uruguay box,
Terrible free kick for the Russians... too deep
Horrible free kick from Samedov. Even the Jolly Green Giant would have failed to have reached that.
Free kick nearly cleared the stadium
Russia will need to play quite a bit better against the Iberians.
Now credited as an OG to Cherries Off.
Some of these Russian players could do a decent job for LUFC, but not necessarily in the Pre,
Oh dear... Russia down to ten men
A second yellow
Stadium is silent
Russia's big day turns into a nightmare as Smolinikov gets a second yellow and off in his first World Cup match. Russia will have to come from two down , being a man down
Free kick too high. Hard to see Russia coming back.
Fernandes on for Cherries Off ion a change of formation.
I know that was only the second red of the tourney but yellow and red cards are used too much in my book
If you watch vids of games from the past, a yellow card/name in the book was rare
Russian fans look stunned. They didn't see this coming.
Penalty to South Korea... being checked by VAR
Given
I don't think it was... hit back arm...where is it supposed to be
I think this was the third red. Boateng and the Colombian were sent off. Agreed though that too many cards are given
Saved
Great save... by the old man
Do you mean Saudi Arabia?
Saved on to bar
WOW! The 45 year old? Oldest to ever play in a World Cup.
Yes... sorry
Seemed a soft foul by Betancur on Samedov.
No probs, mate
I have a busy day so we are going on our 3 miler at half time
I'll be back before the end of the match
Russia looking like the side in last Summer's Confeds Cup.
Have a fun run. Looking forward to chatting later today
A pair of stoppage time minutes
Russia with pointless passing just outside the Uruguay box and the ref blows the halftime whistle Uruguay two goals up and a man up.
The Saudis have a second penalty!!!
Pulling arm but the Saudi was pulling arm
VAR looking
Ht in main match
Ref sent to screen to have a look
Taking too long
Penalty given and card shown to someone
Penalty number two...in the 50th minute... goal
1-1
Makes no sense to give a yellow if you didn't at first
I am off for our 3 miler
Keep the home fires burning
Second half underway from Samara.
Suarez chopped down about 30 yards from goal. Should have been a booking
Into the wall by Cavani
Sure will. Have a fun run!
Uruguay should easily see this one out.
Russian fans look stunned.
Second half underway in the Red Sea Derby
Russian free kick. Fans trying to lift the team..Samedov with another atrocious free kick
Long goal kick headed on. Not sure why Cavani was called for a foul,.
Hiya, boys - I'm back from my boring meeting and I see that Uruguay are putting the hosts to the sword. The other match is a draw right now, so Uruguay and Russia will still go through in that order, right?
Nice one touch Uruguay passing then Betancur wins a tackle in the Russia box and has a shot blocked off a one two with Cacares.
Second Russian change Small Off on for Miranchuk
Welcome back, Bob. You are correct.
It was pretty even until Russia had the player sent off. Since then Russia have not been able to break down this Uruguyan defense.
Arrascaeta on for Betancur , who was booked.
Nice through ball to Cavani and a superb last ditch tackle to prevent a third goal
Cavani well wide on a counter
Dzuyba looking frustrated as he's not getting any change from the Uruguayan defenders or the ref. Now VAR checking an elbow he received from Diego Godin./ Nothing doing
Second Uruguay change Cristian Rodriguez on for Nandez.
First defensive error from Uruguay. Dzubya turns two defenders then shoots well wide.
Sounds like Russia have finally been found out in this match, after two relatively easy opponents in Saudi Arabia and Iran. I expect them to be tonked by either Spain or Portugal.
I am back 3 miles in 39:20
missed nowt!
Egypt, not Iran, that is.
Have the dig the Erie Canal in between matches
Suarez really tried to set up Cavani...just missed him
LOL! Good luck with that one, mate! Are you putting in a French drain?
Digging up to the septic pipe
Suarez through on goal as the ball was gifted to Cavani in midfield. Horrible final return pass intended for Cavani
Wish you guys could have done my idea...bloody 5 am flights
Akinfeev forced to fist away a shot from Cristian Rodriguez then cleared for a corner
I can change the flight . Bob, what do you think?
You did not miss anything. That septic pipe must wreak . Do you smell like a skunk?
Great run... modern day crappy cross!!!!
They are working on pipe tomorrow. I am just digging it up myself to save $$
Typical Russian attack. Get into the box and can't break down that Uruguayan defense.
Let me toss out some ideas later this afternoon when I get home. I'm very flexible about it all.
Cavani with a shot deflected for a corner.,
Akinfeev fists the corner.May have skimmed the bar.
My idea was you come on Friday and leave on Sunday
Cor - what a pong! ;-)
That's a possibility. Let's chat about it with Gooner through the email thread.
Russia will struggle to break down either of the Iberian sides playing like this . Russian coach none too pleased about his side's performance. He shouldn't be
I can check and see if there are even any flights available.
Decent effort well saved
JPDLC says it was high and wide... it was a nice save...what a numpty
From the corner... Cavanhi scores
akinfeev tips over a powerful shot from Cristian Rodriguez.
GOAL !!! CAVANI PUTS URUGUAY THREE UP FROM THE CORNER.
This group seems to be petering out here to the inevitable Uruguay top and Russia second result. I think that many of us will pick up the full 6 points for this one.
If I had to miss a group this morning, I'm glad that it was this one. This afternoon has more promise with Group B still somewhat up in the air. I'd love to see an Iran win!
Into stoppage time. A minute in
Nice! I'm glad that Russia are getting those noses slapped today. Too bad that there wasn't a chance of them being knocked out.
I have turned it over to the other match
This group ended how I picked it..... I AM ROCK BOTTOM!!
Hard to blame Akinfeev. Superb save from a Godin header and Cavani easily put away the rebound
Decent effort of an bicycle kick by an Egyptian..why didn't he just walk!!....went over the bar and it was offside anyway
I get three points for picking Uruguay to top the group.
Maxi Gomez on for Cavani
Didn't you pick Russia to come second, or did you plump for Egypt?
It's over and as in 2010, Uruguay defeat the hosts 3-0.
Uruguay have won 3 nil and are group winners
4 added minutes in the other match
Can there be a winner?
I picked Russia
I'm off home for lunch and then I'll join you for the Group B action.
I picked Uruguay, Russia
A quartet of stoppage time minutes in the Red Sea derby.
GOAL!!!
Egypt have scored a 94th minute winner!!
GOAL !!! SAUDIS WIN IT IN THE FINAL SECONDS .LEAD 2-1. FIRST WIN SINCE 1994
Nice finish...side netting
Not Egypt... Saudi!!
Sorry
I was saying Saudi Arabia... and typed Egypt!!
Last kick of the game!!
The final kick as the Saudis win 2-1
Can't blame the 45 year old. Superb finish just inside the post as the Egypt defense was static.
Off the to dig the Erie Canal
I'm home and have eaten lunch and now settling in for the Group B matches. This one is a bit more intriguing as there are three sides still in this one. Most oddsmakers would have Portugal and Spain going through but Iran are still in with a chance. They'll need a win against Portugal in order to progress. Both Portugal and Spain have an incentive to finish top as they'd much prefer to play hosts Russia than the dangerous Uruguay with an in-form Bitey Suarez.
I've just responded to UWS' email with some ideas about the birthday weekend. Let's hear from everyone about it.
I'll be watching the Portugal v. Iran match on the Fox channel. That one has more at stake. Here's the team news:
Iran: Beiranvand, Rezaeian, Hosseini, Pouraliganji, Hajsafi, Taremi, Jahanbakhsh, Ezatolahi, Ebrahimi, Amiri, Azmoun. Subs: Mazaheri, Torabi, Mohammadi, Shojaei, Ansarifard, Khanzadeh, Ghoddos, Montazeri, Ghoochannejhad, Dejagah, Abedzadeh.
Portugal: Rui Patricio, Cedric, Pepe, Fonte, Guerreiro, Quaresma, William Carvalho, Adrien Silva, Joao Mario, Andre Silva, Ronaldo. Subs: Beto, Bruno Alves, Fernandes, Joao Moutinho, Bernardo Silva, Dias, Ricardo Pereira, Bruno Fernandes, Goncalo Guedes, Gelson Martins, Mario Rui, Lopes.
Referee: Enrique Caceres (Paraguay).
Nocito's Ditch is dug.... not brilliantly but it will me some dosh
And team news out of Kaliningrad:
Spain (4-2-3-1) De Gea; Carvajal, Pique, Ramos, Jordi Alba; Busquets, Thiago; Silva, Iniesta, Isco; Diego Costa.
Morocco (4-2-3-1) Munir; Hakimi, Da Costa, Saiss, Dirar; El Ahmadi, Boussoufa; Amrabat, Belhanda, Ziyech; Boutaib.
Referee Ravshan Irmatov (Uzbekistan).
So, how much do you pong now?
Teams in the tunnel for both matches now.
Great atmosphere in the stadium in Saransk tonight for this crucial clash. Now the anthems....
Just replied
I've got the Portugal match on
I have my BBC4 link going but it is on closedown til 2... get your fingers out BBC
Could we end up with a result of having to draw lots for top vs. second tonight? That could be interesting.
I saw that. It makes sense to me, but I don't want to speak with the others. Haven't heard anything from Gooner yet, as he's stuck working today, poor sod.
Iran with Carlos the Portugal man in charge
Sven vs Sweden
Fab vs Italy
I think the manager should be bound by nationality just as the players
BBC4 link has started
Very strange having it on that channel and not ITV with one and BBC with other....stupid
Portugal get us underway in Saransk; both sides in their traditional kits. Derek Rae and the awful American woman on the mics.
Spain wearing their red for the first time.... chilly apparently
So, who can still qualify?
Mor out?
What do you mean by "bound by nationality" - that people should only manage national sides of their own nation?
Ronaldo for the first shot.. saved and rebound collected
Oh - Ronaldo latches on to a nifty back heel and shoots on sight. Bobbled but held.
You're right that Carlos Queiroz should know all about this Portuguese side.
Wonder how Ronaldo would have been if he stayed at United?
He was the best player with the best team in Europe... never should have left!
He is a record holder in Madrid even after his career at OT
Yes, that's what I mean.
Kathy always thought it was terrible that England were managed by a Swede and Italian
If the players have to be from the country... so should the manager
Conflict of interest
Iran with a shot...nice break..useless effort from the top of the box
Handbags
Sergio Ramos involved of course
Back for the late ones . Have the PIP . Handbags between Sergio Ramos and Amrabat then Pique got the ball , but two footed. Looks like the Moroccans are out, so they are trying to get Spanish players sent off.
Wow - big confusion between the Iranian keeper and a defender gives a free shot to Joao Mario who blasts over. The two Iranians then square up against each other. Extraordinary!
Pique went in two footed... Mor not happy...all the studs were showing but a little low. He'll never get anything...he's from Spain!
Ramos and Pique always complain but do it themselves
Man down... ref doing nothing
I would love to see Sergio Ramos banned.
