(Not So) Super Sunday

I can't say that I'm that ensued about this morning's offerings, as all of the big sides played yesterday. So, today we've got newly-promoted Championship winner Wolves, who've had a good start to the season, against boring Burnley. Later, it's disappointing Everton against train wreck West Ham. Could  have been a morning to get some Sunday chores done, but I'll be here nonetheless. Join me?

Wolves go into this one feeling pretty darn happy after getting one over West Ham – the continuation of whose death march you can follow later on – and have made a very solid start to life in the top flight.

Burnley’s problems are a little bigger. It’s probably a relief that a squad this stretched has gone out of Europe but that doesn’t automatically bring Premier League results.

Wolves come into this one in 12th. Burnley are mired in the drop zone in 19th, with West Ham playing later.

Wolves are all over these mugs. Burnley have clearly deteriorated since last season, where they qualified for Europe!

8:41 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Not sure we’re in for many goals today but Wolves look very assertive when they step the pressure up. They’ve asked the questions so far.

8:44 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Burnley don’t look very good on the ball at all, thus far. But they’re not being given much time on it. Looking like a tough afternoon on early evidence.

Better from Burnley int he last five minutes but Wolves are surely going to break the deadlock soon. Costa should have pulled the trigger earlier a moment ago.

Morning, UWS - how are you mate?

9:07 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I agree with you about Wolves' kit. I don't like how these sides are starting to wander from their traditional colors. When, for example, did Watford start wearing vertical stripes? They now look like Hull City.

9:09 AM

Let's be honest, this one hasn't been much to write home about. I've been reading the Sunday paper while watching it.

Blogger United We Stand said...

I'm surfing the web more than watching!

9:11 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Half-time - No one could be blamed for skipping this one. It hasn't been one for the purists. Burnley with the usual blood and thunder rearguard action that Sean Dyche demands. And Wolves didn't quite have the quality to press the advantage of their possession.

0-0 at the interval.

I was coaching Siena soccer yesterday at Berkshire CC

A strange incident happened. A foul was called on the field but somewhere else one of our players started walking out of his position and saying to the referee that someone was going to hit him. Everyone just watched as he was walking and the running as the other guy starting going after him!

9:40 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Well, the guy was sent off but wouldn't leave at first. He then just jumped over the fence and was technically off the field. He kept saying he was going to go after him after the match.
"Security "was called and he came... a guy in a Safety Patrol jacket!!
The guy did say a few things as we were walking to the bus but nothing came of it

Not sure what Burnley's Plan B is now. Actually, I do. In matches I've watched, they tend to put Chris Wood on for Sam Vokes. One big lad for another. But never the two of them together for some reason. Do they dislike each other?

9:49 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Weird to think that these two were the top two in the land!
They said earlier that Burnley's championship season of 1960, Wolves hit Burnley for six. Wolves were defending Champs

Nuno is still going to throw Adama Traore on, even though they've just scored. Well done - keep going for goals.

9:50 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Seems like Sean Dyche prefers a little and large partnership up front. That may be why the two don't play together.

9:51 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I remember even in the 70s that these two were First Division regulars.

9:51 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Adama Traore on for Helder Costa. The last thing Burnley want to see is a well rested tricky player running at them/

9:52 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - Vydra nearly equalized there from the free kick!

Gudmundson gets the referee's attention and a booking for that cynical tug back. He's the fourth Burnley player into the book this afternoon.

9:53 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Long Burnley fee kick headed on and Vydra has a volley deflected for a corner. Wolves counter and Gudmunsson booked for a professional foul on the counter.

9:54 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Yep - cue Chris Wood for Sam Vokes. I could be the Burnley manager!

9:56 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Like for like and as Bob stated a normal switch for Dyche . One former Leeds big man on for another as Chris Wood on for Sam Vokes.

9:56 AM

Near post save from Traore by Hart off a pas from Jimenez as Burnley were sliced apart.

Jota goes into the book there for sliding in on Bardsley.

9:58 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Jota booked for a challnege on Bardley . din't see anything wrong with that challenge.

9:58 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Traore has always struck me as a player with a one-track mind. Wherever he is on the pitch, he just thinks, "Run with ball!"

10:02 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The final roll of the dice for Sean Dyche in what has been a really flat performance from his team Ashley Westwood on for Gudmunsson.

10:05 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Wolves can't get a shot off, but keep possession .Then well wide by Bonatini.

10:06 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

10:09 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Tarkowski has been really good today; you can definitely see why Southgate has included him in the England set-up. He's saved several near goals.

10:09 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Burnley merely holding on as they are being outclassed.

10:10 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I can't really see Wolves beating United at OT next weekend. They're strictly a mid-table side, doing well at home but not a lot away from home.

10:10 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The Wee Beetle fouled twice . The advantage was played then a free kick. Neves booked.

10:12 AM

It'll still be a worry for Nuno that going into the last ten minutes, Wolves have struggled to put a relegation threatened side away at home. Burnley could still nick a point with one in off Chris Wood ample bum.

10:21 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Hart lumps it up the pitch in a last ditch attempt to get an equalizer.

Nothing doing - Wolves have won it, albeit by one goal. Peter Dreary liked it but I'm hoping for better from the late one.

10:22 AM

Back for the late one now. These are two sides that aren't very good - that goes without saying. Still - given the stakes - this could be an interesting fixture.

10:52 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

For West Ham, things can surely only get better. A winless, pointless and pretty worthless start to the season for a team that splashed out almost £100m on nine new signings this summer. Another defeat would usher in their worst ever start to a season.

10:52 AM

The headline at Goodison is that Manuel Pellegrini has made six changes (!) to his side today. It's a gamble, but they've been shite, so why not?

West Ham United: Fabianski; Zabaleta, Balbuena, Diop, Masuaku; Noble, Rice, Obiang; Yarmolenko, Arnautovic, Felipe Anderson. Subs: Cresswell, Snodgrass, Adrian, Sanchez, Ogbonna, Lucas Perez, Antonio.

Great work by the Hammers, but ball watching by the Toffees. Valbuebno won a tackle in the Hammers half, passed to Arnautovic , who received a lobbed pass from Obbiang and got behind the Toffees defense. passe across the face of goal for an easy tap in for Jarmalenko for a first Hammers goal.

Bernard , the tiny Brazilian on for Schneid , who may not be in the right frame of mind since his dad passed away this week. An attacking move as well.

Perfect timing as the Toffees trail 1-2 on the stroke of half time and now it is halftime. Should be quite a second half.

Superb team goal. Nice long possession that culminated in Gana playing a ball wide right to Kenny. His superb cross was met with a superb header from Siggy.

Back on at Goodison. It was all looking really peachy for the Hammers until that late Siggy header.

Yarmo earns himself a yellow now. Very eventful debut for him now - two goals and a booking to boot!
