Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

The UEFA Nations League - What the Hell is It?

The UEFA Nations League - it's the footballing elites' latest attempt to confuse and annoy loyal fans. But what the hell is it, anyway? Is it a replacement for European Championship qualifying? Is it a new and superfluous tournament in off-years? Well, LOB stalwart United We Stand came across a video on the Independent of London website that answers some questions. According to the following video, the Nation's League is the attempt to solidify national teams by increasing the competition between them. Each team will be pitted against peers rather than having to play matches against minnows. There are four "Leagues," with the top teams in League A, the second-tier sides in League B and so on. Then within each league, there are four groups of either three or four teams.

England is of course in League A and in the fourth group, alongside Spain Croatia. Their upcoming fixtures are:

Saturday, September 8 - England v. Spain
Friday, October 12 - Croatia v. England
Monday, October 15 - Spain v. England
Sunday, November 18 - England v. Croatia

From there, each top team will be thrown into semi-finals to be played in June 2019, with a 3/4 place game and a final to follow.

You can find the video here: https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/international/uefa-nations-league-what-is-it-how-does-it-work-when-will-it-start-what-group-england-a8449986.html

And fortunately, the matches appear to be covered on ESPN+, making my $4.99/month investment even better value.

I'm morbidly curious about today's Slovakia Denmark because Denmark called up their Futsal fancy men because their FA and the players are in a ruck about money. Could be a gas. Could be rubbish.

so far, no keepie uppies and neck traps from the Danes. They're no fun at all.

On of the Danes has a few million views on his you.tube channel with his step-over, keepie-uppie, and neck-to-ball-to-shoulder-nonsense. The Slovakians are disrespecting him by tackling him successfully ever single time he's on the ball. I'm really happy to see this because it lines up perfectly with what I always thought about those futsal guys.

Oh that's unfair. Slovakia resort to proper football and score from a cross and a header goal. No circus antics at all.

Thanks for the tip, mate. I'm just dialing it up now.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this Nation's League nonsense. I sounds like an idea that came from some overly ambitious conference discussions after some heavy lunches in a Zurich bistro. Not sure it's going to come off at all. This match seems really poorly attended.

This match has improved since the goal. I guess there's only 1 futsal player for the Danes on the pitch. The rest are Denmark-B and under 21s.

What confounds me about this league is the relegation and promotion elements. It's overly fussy. And what gripes me is that it's going to put paid to friendlies against African, and North and South American nations. In the US, that means playing Mexico over and over and over and over again, expecting that to be the kind of preparation we need for Qatar. I say stick the Nations League.

I'm back from the bog to see Slovakia increase their lead. All very easy there. The Danes are all over the place.

2-0 Slovakia. Again, pretty team play undoing the Danes.

We're approaching half time, so I'm going to clear off home.

It's back and the same teams are on the pitch. The Slovakians are all pressure now.

It is definitely confusing, but not a replacement for Euro qualifying , which starts in March. It's sort of pre-Euro qualifying. The four group winners in League A will play in a four team tournament in June.

I don't think it takes place of the Euro Qualifying
