England v. Albania Live!
TGIF, chaps! I've got my week's work done and am looking forward to this afternoon's festivities. We've got some football to attend to. Gareth Southgate's England side need four points from two matches in the next few days in order to book their flights to Qatar for the 2022 World Cup. Today's it's a home match at Wembley against Albania. Ordinarily this would be an occasion for England's strikers to fill their boots, but I suspect that it might be a more nervy affair, with Southgate running out a defensive starting XI, as a loss would be disastrous. I'll take a professional 2-0 win.
Come on, England!

England’s all-time record against Albania is played five, won five. Goals for: 14. Goals against: one. Records are there to be broken, and runs are so easily snapped, but it would be something of a shock should England not at least get the point they need to effectively secure automatic qualification from Group I for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
I've got the Angola v. Egypt qualifier up on ESPN+ as an amuse bouche for the England match now.
Our LUFC chum Helder Costa has just put Angola ahead.
Good Afternoon, Bob. Here to join you for the match. Thank you for getting us started
Afternoon, David - great to have you on board. How are things your way?
The team news out of Wembley:
England: Pickford, Walker, Maguire, Stones, James, Henderson, Phillips, Chilwell, Foden, Kane, Sterling.
Subs: Mings, Abraham, Ramsdale, Saka, Johnstone, Alexander-Arnold, Coady, Bellingham, Grealish, Smith-Rowe.
Albania: Strakosha, Ismajli, Kumbulla, Veseli, Hysaj, Bare, Gjasula, Bajrami, Trashi, Cikalleshi, Uzuni.
Subs: Berisha, Laci, Cekici, Roshi, Doka, Hoxhallari, Selmani, Mihaj, Balaj, Ramadani, Dermaku, Lenjani.
Referee: Felix Zwayer (Germany).
As Dave noted, it's a decidedly defensive line-up, with only Foden, Kane and Sterling at all forward-looking. Lots of firepower off the bench, though, if needed in the guise of Tammy Abraham, Bukayo Saka, Jack Grealish and the debutant Emile Smith-Rowe.
Wahay - the ESPN steam has started for the match!
Doing well, thank you for asking . How are you?
About time. They waited until five minutes before kickoff
England fans all bouncy before the match having a good old singalong to "Sweet Caroline." And why not? It's a great tune.
Not sure what Gareth is thinking? Why not put out a full strength attacking lineup?
Yeah - doing okay. I'm officially a month away from the end of the semester and the start of my sabbatical leave. I can't wait - I've got a load of fun projects lined up for it.
Italy vs Switzerland is on TUDN
Hiya boys
Drives me nuts that England are wearing BLUE at Wembley!!
Here with Three Lions on my Shirt! C'mon England!
I figure he's just a bit nervous about Albania possibly nicking one. I also expect that the full-backs will attack as wingbacks and provide the width that players like Grealish and Saka might have otherwise. Still - I agree - he should have been more positive in his outlook.
WOW! That's fantastic. A well earned sabbatical leave. Congratulations
News in the manager merry-go-round... Lamps has said to the Canaries
Welcome, Dave and Steve. Let's have a bit of fun this afternoon, eh?
Good afternoon, Dave and Steve. Great to be part of the four musketeers
Great news Bob... enjoy!
Let's hope so
Absolutely. An early couple of England goals please.
What country has the same tune as GSTQ?
Is the Albanian national anthem Old Lang Signe?
Northern Ireland if they want a ruck
Roy Keane's comments on Sky before the match: "“Harry Kane has to liven up. He’s got to look at himself and say: get over these disappointments. Listen, he plays for Spurs, he should be used to disappointment. It’s not as if they win stuff.”
LOL!
Is it one of the Commonwealth countries in the Caribbean - maybe Bermuda?
With all the players we have on yellows, his lineup may make more sense.
Declan Rice has been doing great for West Ham this season....is there anyone else from the Euros that isn't having hangover?
I think it is a European country... Leicht/Luxem...something like that
Sounds like a fair number of Italian based players for Albania. Top scorer, Armando Broja, on loan to Saints from Chelsea, out injured
Why does anyone listen to Keane anymore. Leave him to bitching at kids on his lawn. Shut it, Roy!
England 66 Squad member from Wolves died today....nice touch bringing out shirt
A bit of Remembrance Day bugling to come and then we'll get started.
I can't say that I've ever heard of Ron Flowers, have any of you?
I'm going with Northern Ireland
Answer to my google question
The simple answer is that Liechtenstein doesn''t use God Save the Queen, it does however use the same melody.
I've heard of Ron Flowers . I think he was a fullback with the Wolves team of there fifties. Did he play for Saints too?
What are you thoughts about my hangover comment?
Right then - let's get down to business. An early goal would certainly settle the nerves.
Away we go
COME ON ENGLAND
COME ON ENGLAND
COME ON ENGLAND!
Albania are third in the group
They're off from Wembley at the second attempt.
COME ON ENGLAND
Come on England.... start on the front foot
Alas, we are going backwards
To be honest I didn't see the hangover comment
I can't think of anyone, Dave. Kal Phillips certainly hasn't been in the same sparkling form this season. Do you think that they're all knackered?
Italy vs Swiss started two minutes earlier
I've heard the name Ron Flowers but I don't think he was playing at top level in the '71 Derek Dougan era Wolves that I recall.
Good on the ref; the Albanian tried to con him and he wasn't having any of it. Good start for him.
Oh - good touch from Kane but he wasn't able to find Sterling. Good open stuff from the start. That's promising that the Albanians aren't just trying to park the bus. Should provide us with some space.
Flowers played in the side that was the best in the land after Munich Air Disaster. United had one two on the trot and on the way to a third. Wolves won it in 58 and 59 and the Cup in 60
Poland has taken the lead in Andorra as has Hungary vs San Marino
Sterling went down there - it certainly looks like he was sandwiched.
Sterling with a bit of a dive there...why do players still act...VAR will check it
I think he went down too theatrically then Pickford with great sweeper keeping seconds later
Pickers quick off his line and laid one on the Albanian for good measure.
Poland now a point behind England
A Trashi bit of defending there.
I thought I'd get that in before our Punmeister got to it.
The rain is fairly teeming down now.
Harry Kane fouled from behind. Should have been a booking. It is. The player is suspendedfor the next match
That was a nasty tackle on Kane
He is in the book....the guy has the nerve to argue!
First yellow card goes to Giasula. And England have a free kick opportunity.
YESSSS!!!!! Old Slabhead onto it! 1-0!
YES!! Maguire gives England the lead!!
Why don't United score goals like that!
He's on
WAY HAY ! HARRY MAGUIRE HEADS IN A FREE KICK FROM REESE JAMES
Seconds earlier the Swiss took shock lead in Rome. Switzerland top their group be three pints ahead of Italy.
High and wide by Foden after he collected a stray Albanian pass
Oh - Foden found a bit of room and should have at least worked the keeper.
Foden with a lovely run....why doesn't he finish like that for City
As Gerry Harrison would say....high, wide and horrible
The injured Lacmi replaced by the Bare
Traci describing the level of the Albanian team?
Corner. Let's have another Harry!
The Swiss nearly went two up in Rome. Long range shot just wide
Oh - that could easily have been #2. Albania look all over the place from set pieces and England seem in the mood.
Speaking of commentators from your youth....Did you see that Gerald Sinstadt passed away today at the age of 91
He was the main voice of Granda TV...Manc and Liverpool teams
STRUTH...what was Walker doing.... phew.... well done Pickers
Oh - Walker played a suicidal backpass but Pickers rescued him. Great save!
Poland two up in Andorra, who had a player sent off in the first minute
Great save. Horrible back pass
Oh - Kane nearly played Sterling in there. Just behind him.
England has to win. Don't see Poland failing to win against ten men of Andorra as they were going to do the same against eleven
Danes on top vs the Pharaohs.
Albania with three sibs remaining?
I can't really see Albania scoring unless we kick one in our own net.
San Marino are have no points... scored 1 conceded 33
I think England might win on Monday!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
KANE!!!!
Great move and cross
YESSSSS!!!!
HK sticks in #2! He's been in rotten form, so that's a tonic for him.
WAY HAY! HAAY KANE AND ABEL TO PUT ENGLAND TWO UP WITH A HEADER FROM A FOOT OUT. NICE CROSS FROM HENDO OFF A ONE TWO AFTER A RUN AND PASS FROM REESE JAMES
Great cross from Hendo and it's #42 for Kane in an England shirt.
"Harry Kane from that range is 100%"
I think all of us from that range would be 100%
Northern Ireland on top vs Lithuanina. OG with the goal
LOL, Dave! When will Harry Kane be Abel to score for the Spuds
Did you see that Spain were in trouble to win the group being behind Sweden.... they get a luck penalty to beat Greece and Sweden lose in Georgia!
All Spain now
BTW... my last match at Wembley(the old one)
England beat Georgia in '97
And that's Cikalleshi into the book now for a bit of saucy backchat.
Albania with another booking and another suspension. As things stand it's meaningless as they are eliminated and will have to look to the NL to qualify
WOW! Didn't know w you had seen a match there in '97
Our last match at the old Wembley was the Euro 2006 final. Germany v. Czechs.
Nice move and run by Sterling.... fails to do anything with it
Hungary two ups vs San Marino
I'm not complaining about the side but SGate can't say anything about picking on form
Maguire has been awful
Stones hardly plays
Sterling hardly plays
Kane has been awful
I think remember that you and Steve had watched some of Euro '96 live
I'm back. I had to take a message from Gareth Southgate to Dave. Short one, "Defensive lineup? Get stuffed!"
As things stand, Italy all but in the playoffs to make the WC . Does anyone remember how that worked out four years ago?
Welcome back, Steve. You missed the first Harry Kane goal in ages It was a header from an inch out
And now it's Ismaeli into the book - they're certainly racking these up.
We visited England in 97 during Spring Break
Tom was almost 5 and Matt was just under 1... Jon didn't exist
We stayed for a week and Tom got an ear infection...the doctor said he shouldn't fly. I had to stay another week!!!
That was when England were playing... my brother-in-law Jon was going to the match with Mike and Phil....he got some infection in his leg and was in hospital...I got to go!!
I also went to see Ipswich beat Man City at PR
Albania with a hat-trick, of bookings and suspensions that is
LOL, Steve - well in!
WOW! That was an interesting visit. That match at PR must have been a Championship, match ,. not a Prem match
Gareth rang off with a song. "I'll play who I want.... I'll play who I want.... Dave Nocito.... I'l play who I want."
Sikalleshi has a go but Pickers it behind it. Credit to Albania for trying to play a bit tonight.
WAY HAY ! HENDO PUTS ENLGAND THREE UP. GREAT ONE TOUCH PASSING
YES!!!!
THREE NIL!!!
HENDO!!!
YESSSS!!! Hendo slots home a great effort for #3!
Good point Steve
VAR checked for offside...it counts
Israel takes the lead in Austria. it doesn't matter
ooh....Kane could have made it four!!
Oh - Kane nearly in for 4-0. England are rampant! Wow!
England scoring more against eleven man Albania than Poland against ten man Andorra
I've tuned my computer to ESPN2
Still so upset looking at the Italians after this summer...especially Bloody Jorginho
Switzerland now top the group... Italy would go into the playoffs...could they not make the WC for the second time in a row?
OH! Long range curler from Harry Kane well turned around by the keeper
Kane with another effort...saved!
Maybe Kane will wake for the Prem
Oh - how is that not a pen for Sterling!
And then Kane curls one toward the top corner. The keeper claws it away.
Switzerland are three points ahead of the Italians
Italy visit N. Ireland
Swiss host Bulgaria
If that score holds then the Swiss would need a draw Monday vs Bulgaria to clinch WC qualification
KANE!!!
FOUR!!!!
YESSSSS!!!!
HK slams home #4!
GOAL !!! HARRY KANE PUTS ENGLAND FOUR UP AFTER A LESS THAN STERLING ALBANIA PASS WAS PICKED YUP... NICE FINISH
Italy ties it up vs the Swiss. Italy top the group on goal difference ahead of the Swiss
Let's have some more, lads!
Italy hit the net.... VAR checking for offside....it counts
Where is Kane in the England goal scoring now?
Finally, he scores what I think is his his classic kind of goal and it's not Arsenal and Calum Chambers looking a mug for showing him the incide.
Italy now on top on GD... by two
Alabania's 76 year old Italian manager feeling more like 90. I haven't know a manager that old at this level. Have any of you?
So, how far is HK away from the record now? I think he's on 43 and Roon scored 53, right?
Germany scored NINE yesterday...Come on ENGLAND
Kane has at least 41 goals. Nearly 42
OH! Volley from Harry Kane just wide. Nearly a hat-trick and nearly put England five up
So, who is still behind?
Lineker, Charlton and Rooney?
Didn't he equal or pass Greaves recently
He almost adds another
Oh - Kane is a whisker away from his hat-trick.
Any answers to my question asked at 3:25?
Kane is a goal behind Jimmy Greaves now.
On October 12th....
Rooney 53
Charlton 49
Lineker 48
Greaves 44
Kane 41
Owen 40
Sterling.... wide open...chance to cross...fails to find someone
Rats
Wouldn't mine nine England goals in San Marino. Will they come from behind to win 1-7 after conceding seconds after kickoff?
Were any of you at the match with me at Wembley when England beat Luxembourg 9-0?
Sorry Dave. Two sugars and a little milk in mine. Ta.
I can't remember a manager that lasted even into his 80s, David.
OH! Harry Kane heads a cross from Reese James just wide.
Oh - Kane again just a inch or two away. Some great work again from Reece James on the right.
No I wasn't, but listened to England vs Luxembourg on the radio. it seemed like they scored every few seconds
Ten man Andorra pulls it back to 1-2 vs Poland.
COME ON DESMOND
I just looked it up
It was EXACTLY 8 years before I got married
Dahlgren boys were stateside but David you were a senior
Dec 15 1982... I think I went with Stef and Host Nations
Goal scorers
1st half
OG, Coppell, Woodcock, Blissett
2nd half
Blissett, Chamberlin, Blissett, Hoddle , Neal
So to answer Dave's question, the England scoring chart is now:
1. Rooney - 53
2. Lineker - 48
3. Greaves - 44
4. Kane - 43
5. Owen - 40
BUGGER! Poland now makes it 1-3.
Why didn't you go David? Maybe I didn't go with Host Nations but went with Stef and Todd O'Neil...I think
A pair of stoppage time minutes
HT in Rome
1-1
Not sure why I didn't go to be honest
Almost an OG
Oh - that was nearly an o.g. for #5!
GOAL!!!
KANE WITH HIS HAT-TRICK!!!
GREAT SCISSOR KICK GOAL!!
FIVE NIL!!
What a hit!!! Kane with the spectacular.
He has tied Greaves
WOW!~ WHAT A VOLLEY ! HARRY KANER AND ABEL; TO GET A first half hat-trick as he puts England five up off a corner from Phil Foden
YESSSS!!!!!
What a goal for Kane's hat-trick!
And he's level with Jimmy Greaves!
It got a deflection but who cares!
England five up at the half
Strewth. I hope this hat-trick doesn't translate into a return to form for the Spuds.
England have played really well
More again in the second half!!
Germany didn't let up... same from England please
Matt sure does...he's killing him in Fantasy
FIVE BLOODY NIL
I can't believe it!
Kane.... a perfect hat-trick...left foot, right foot and header
I'm going out on a limb....England will win this one
Bob, your list was missing Bobby Charlton
Kane would like to use the second half and Monday's match to overtake Lineker and Charlton!!
Kane has scored more competitive goals than anyone else
Overtook Rooney with 38
Sorry for missing out Bobby.
Well, that was quite a romp. Let's have some more in the second half, eh?
Agreed. let's double that score.
Second half underway from Roma
Harry Kane with Enlgand's first perfect hat-trick since David Platt in the 1-7 win in San Marino in 1993
We're back for the second half now. It would be hard for England to improve on that first half performance, but let's have a go, eh? Should be a fun match for the likes of Saka and Grealish to come into as well.
No changes from England?
Two changes for Albania? That makes a total of four changes
We are off
More of the same please
Albania with two more substitutions. One remaining
England faffing about at the back and a long range shot picked pout by the England keeper
That's the match England fell behind after 10 seconds!
San Marino is next for England
Sterling with a nice run.... again... poor final decision
Arnautovic ties it up for Austria vs Israel with a spot kick
From Scott Murray on the Guardian blog:
"So when Maguire scored the opener, he celebrated by cupping his ears, then putting his fingers in them. A rebuke to the criticism he’s been copping. ITV entertainer Roy Keane wasn’t impressed, to say the least, calling the gesture “embarrassing ... he’s been a disgrace for Manchester United.” Straight back at you, Harry."
Oh - Kane was in there but skied his shot.
Harry Kane moire like John y Wilkinson with the shot from just outside the box that nearly went outside the stadium
Better scoring rate from Greaves. Not surprising.
England new boy Smith-Rowe getting some instruction
Harry Kane wins a free kick wide right
Roy Keane is the disgrace.
Another free kick chance now. Let's have this one, lads!
Diamaku with a nasty trip on Harry Kane. Should have been booked
