San Marino vs England World Cup Qualifying
England needs merely a draw tin San Marino to clinch a spot in WC 2022. However, England should win handily , but the job needs to be done. A professional performance is the minimum requirement. Join me for the match on Plus. Also Northern Ireland vs Italy , near neighbors of the teams we will be watching, is on TUDN in a key match for the Italians. The Italians win the group as long as they don't have a winning margin to fewer than the Swiss. Any questions?

The Arsenal numbers in this XI are exciting, and I hope they do well today. More than anything though, I hope Ramsdale, Saka, and ESR come through unscathed. Thanks for getting us going, MUR.
Afternoon, guys - thanks to David for getting us started with this thread. I'll be tuning in for the first half before heading down the hallway to class.
The big Premier League news out of Blighty today is that the managerial merry-go-round continues with Dean Smith, who was only sacked a week ago by Villa, is the new boss at Norwich.
Good Afternoon, Bob and Steve. Glad to help. How is everyone this afternoon?
I read about Dean Smith taking charge at CR. I thought Lamps was going to take over.
I reckon that's a pretty shrewd move for Norwich to pick up a guy who has kept a underperforming team up for years. Smith needs about a player in each important position as well. I hope it works for him.
Afternoon Boys
I join just as Plus does
Like Bob, I will be here for the first half...hope it is all done and dusted by then
San Marino haven't won a game in 29 years
And Smith is so much less of a prima donna than Lamps. He'll get down to straight away to survival rather then Fwanks trademark whinging and whining. I hear Rangers might need a manager, so throw him up there in Jock-land
I second that , Steve. There's a slim chance of him keeping the Canaries up, but it's possible. They need to be more solid defensively and as you stated a few good signings and /or loans in January
Hi everyone on this sunny but blustery day.
Good Afternoon, Dave. Ready for a big England win
I have the match from San Marino on Plus and the one from Belfast on TUDN
What a start that was when Psycho assisted SM to their first minute goal...I think an Arsenal man scored quite a few after that one.... Wrighty
England XI: Ramsdale, Alexander-Arnold, Maguire, Coady, Mings, Saka, Phillips, Bellingham, Foden, Smith Rowe, Kane.
How about that shock Serb win in Lisbon? All of Bob and Kate's hours of working with Mitrovic paid off for the Serbs.
I'm a bit surprised to see Kane start today. Conte might be breaking plates back in the benighted half of north London.
As I said on the text, I am not sure what the playoffs mean
Who goes in Path A? Path B and Path C
All 3 Path winners go thru
But who goes where?
Same national anthem playing in Belfast as in San Marino
Kane wants to over take Lineker in the first half
Kane is captain of England and not of Spurs
I remember Robson being captain of England and Wilkins being captain for United
Surely, it doesn't happen often
I can post a thread this evening about the paths if that helps. It will basically be a continuation of the text I sent. Tomorrow may be better after all the European teams have played their WC qualifiers
Not happy at all to see the number of starters, including Kal Phillips, being risked tonight. Here is the team news:
San Marino: Elia Benedettini, Manuel Battistini, Fabbri, Rossi, Fabio Tomassini, Lunadei, Enrico Golinucci, Mularoni, D’Addario, Nanni, Jose Hirsch.
Subs: David Tomassini, Zonzini, Michael Battistini, Simone Benedettini, Conti, Vitaioli, Ceccaroli, Grandoni, Marconi, Zafferani, Censoni, Alessandro Golinucci.
England: Ramsdale, Coady, Maguire, Mings, Alexander-Arnold, Bellingham, Phillips, Saka, Foden, Kane, Smith-Rowe.
Subs: Stones, Abraham, Chilwell, James, Johnstone, Walker, Pickford, Gallagher.
Referee: Rade Obrenovic (Slovenia).
We are off
England taking on Motherwell?
They're off from San Marino and the hosts wearing a bizarre maroon and orange kit
I think San Marino normally wears sky blue and white?
And we're away in San Marino tonight - let's have an early goal, boys!
The Sammarinese got the short end of the stick with their Galatasary cast off kits.
San Marino had already scored way back when in '93
So, England wear blue at Wembley and white in San Marino tonight. Huh?
Peter Dreary says the kit is too commemorate the 90th anniversary of the San Marino FA. Surely there are better ways to commemorate
I remember that match, Dave - poor backpass from Psycho, right?
In the playoffs, I'm guessing Portugal will be the top ranked team and in Path A. If Italy finish second to the Swiss they will be the top ranked layoff team and join Portugal in Path A
Oh - first chance for Saka to get down his side. Didn't have anyone running in on his cross.
England finally get it in the box but Saka's cross was far too hard
Do the playoffs happen next month or in the springtime?
Everyone will be interested to note that Italy is wearing what looks like and England retro kit from the 60s and 70s
GOAL! Slabhead strikes again! 1-0 England!
YES!!
Maguire gives England the lead!!!
Wahey! Slab-head coasts into the mix and finishes with a stonking header.
That was a superb header from Harry Maguire . Great start for England off a great corner. England have clinched their WC place
That'll settle the nerves. Maguire's sixth in England colors.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/sportsnews/article-10203101/Premier-Leagues-TV-rights-set-sold-2BILLION-doubling-income-Stateside.html
NOT CBS!!!!!
I'd like to see NBC and ESPN share it
Cross from Saka out for a corner . He's causing the Dan Marinos lots of problems
With the way that this San Marino boys are defending corners, Maguire could get a hat-trick tonight! Are you watching Roy Keane?
Top scoring England defender EVER!
Harry Maguire top scoring defender for England. Is that what is meant by Slab Head?
Arnautovic loves Austria the lead vs Moldova. Austria already in the playoffs through the NL , so it means naught
oooh ESR....header...didn't make to the net...bugger
Oh - that was a lovely sequence. Kal out to Saka who floated a great ball in toward Smith-Rowe.
ESR with a clever run that just deflected into some Sammarinese.
OH Emile Smoith should have Rowed England to a two goal lead . Great cross and wide open but his header was wayward
For some reason England's attacks have all gone down the left
Bit of heading practice for the England backfour.
Well, Saka is proving to be a potent weapon tonight.
And that's 2-0! Looks like an o.g.
Two nil!!
Saka with a weak effort deflected...three times!
GOAL !!!! SAKA PUTS ENGLAND TWO UP WITGH THE HELP OF A WICKED DEFLECTION. ENGLAND THRUGH TO THE WC
Saka's shot gets tapped in by some Sammarinese.
Qatar beckons....
Fabio Tomasini booked for a short pull. Not Fab by him
Poor ball there from Maguire; might have been punished by a better side.
Poland will be one of the dime a dozen in the playoffs.
Long range shot by Hey Jude straight to the keeper
Bellingham has a go from distance - and why not - if the San Marino boys are going to help out by diverting balls beyond their keeper.
I guess there's a chance CR might not play in his fifth WC. Would become the first player to play in both five WCs and five Euros
Very leisurely stroll for the England boys right now.
Austria goes two up vs Moldova, but it's meaningless
Oh - Foden tries to emulate Kane but doesn't quite get it right.
Foden with a scissor kick...just wide
OH ! Nearly 0-3. Foden volleys just wide off a cross from Saka
VAR check for a penalty there - I don't think that the bloke actually touched it.
VAR checking for a penalty for hand ball. England have a shot for a penalty
VAR checking for a handball...that should be given...it did touch hand ..... he's going to have a look
Ref going to the monitor . I think It will be a penalty
Well, well - the ref is having a look. Must be closer than I thought.
PENALTY! It did touch his fingers. If it's harsh then change the rules
Come on... don't give this...it has been given and a card!!
RUBBISH
Common sense!!
And it is a penalty! What about the card for the San Marino bloke? Yellow. That's enough.
Harry Kane steps up to take - this one will bring him beyond Greaves.
And it does! 0-3 England!
England deserve that penalty shout because that blokes hand was up claiming offside or something. What a prat. No surprise who lines up to take the pen.
Kane to take....3 nil!
GOAL ! SMASHED DOWN THEW MIDDLE AS HARRY KANE AND ABEL TO PUT ENGLAND THREE UP
It was Rossi who conceded the penalty. To add insult to injury he's booked and suspended for the next match. Does it matter? They'll still be thrashed
45 goals...now ahead of Greaves
Only Rooney 53, Charlton 49 and Lineker 48 ahead of him
Not as straightforward for Italy. They can't break down the Ulsterman. Frustrating evening for them
Kane in the top four England scorers now. His next target is Lineker.
Oh - Saka nearly in there for #4. Got it on target though.
What do the Italians need tonight, David?
That's it...I am going out on a limb..... England have qualified for the World Cup Finals.... sorry I didn't want to break it too soon but I've done it
They need to match the Swiss score
Kane.... Gary...he's coming!!
4-0
GOAL !!!! HARRY KANE AT GTHE DOUBLE AS HE PUTS ENGLAND FOUR UP. NOT A CLEANLY HIT VOLLEY BUT IN THE CORNER . EMIL SMOITH ROWED OVER A GREAT CROSS.
Kane again! He's on fire right now for England. On a hat-trick and England are cruising it 0-4.
There's another one for Kane. Not the cleanest contact, but more than enough to beat the candlestick maker in the nets for the Sammarinese tonight.
Ooh.... The Gunner keeper has to make a save!!
Oh - Nanni actually make Ramsdale work for a moment.
Ramsdale turns around a Sand Marino chance > I think it was headed wide
Aaron has to put down his teacup and direct a Sammarinese shot wide.
Israel takes the lead vs the Pharaohs . They did that several thousand years ago
Mings has to knock it off back there with the grabbing....lazy defending!!
The candlestick maker in goal - LOL! Nice one, Steve!
Here's a stat. England 4 Everyone else combined 3
I'm bored. When are England going to score again?
Harry Kane's first goal was a record goal
The captain breaks a 113-year old record by scoring his 13th international goal in a single calendar year.
Why couldn't he have added that by one at Wembley in July...for England AND my sake
Wahay! It's another penalty!
Scotland lead vs Denmark
England get another pen!!
Kane for a hat-trick
PENALTY ! Another hand ball, but the booking was harsh off the header from Harry Kane
He is going to take it..... back to back five goal first half goals...back to back first half hat-tricks....up he comes... FIVE NIL
Kane's header was blocked with a hand.
And he's got another chance to score a first-half hat-trick.
Into the roof! 0-5 up! And he's onto 47. Are you watching, Gary Lineker?!
Enough of the yellow cards. This Slovenian ref is ridiculously punitive. No prizes for guessing who takes the ensuing pen.
And it's hat-trick Harry again. 5-0. Before the half.
GOAL ! SUCCESSIVE FIRST HALF HAT-TRICKS OFF HIS SECOND PENALTY OF THE MATCH. BLASTED IN THE UPPER 90 AND FIVE UP IN CONSECUTIVE FIRST HALVES
Brilliant penalty!!
Why doesn't everyone take it like that...top bins at 100 mph
Equals Everton great Dixie Dean for back to back hat-tricks
First consecutive hat-tricks since Dixie Dean in the 1927
Nasty one from Daddoria on Kal. Don't like that one bit.
Great kick save by BPF from Chiesa to keep it 0-0 in Belfast
Tommy Taylor...Busy Babe... scored in successive games of his own...missed a match in between
Not seeing Kane equaling Dixie Dean's league goal scoring...he scored SIXTY in one season
Good lord! Kane has his fourth!!!!!
GOAL... KANE SCORES AGAIN!!!
He is going to overtake Lineker tonight.... but he will be pulled off before hand
GOAL ! HARRY KANE WITH FOUR GOALS AND ENGLAND HALF A DOZEN UP
Kane again? Ruddy Nora, this feels like the old days with Channon, McDonald, and Keegan.
Meanwhile Hungary takes the lead in Warsaw , but it doesn't matter
I've never believed that record any more than I believe that Pele scored a thousand in his career. Some of those must have been in training, surely.
Scots on top vs the Danes but again it doesn't matter. John Soutar assisted by Mini Cooper
No wonder Kane wanted to play tonight!
These games are pointless really
It is so embarassing for the winners and losers.
The lower clubs should be playing in a qualifying round with teams of the same caliber... they'd have a chance in games
England 6 Everyone Else combined in the Euro matches being played 5
I think it matters for the Scots with seeding...I heard
I agree, Dave. it's a waste of time. There teams in name only. They;'re a joke
Poland losing at home to Hungary...I guess we can still go thru if we concede seven!
A pair of stoppage time mi notes
Then well done Scots!
When Tyrone Mings is backheeling it in the opponent's penalty area, you know that there is something extraordinary going on.
From the BBC
Football could take a look at how cricket and rugby nations qualify for World Cups because having teams like San Marino & Andorra compete against the likes of England is embarrassing and probably very demoralising for those on the end of a constant drubbing. There should be a pre-qualifying round where the 20 lowest ranked nations compete for eight spots in the main qualifying. That way they play games they stand a chance of winning and the other nations have less qualifying games to play. Everyone's a winner.
Northern Ireland 0-0 vs Italy at the half
Great stat, Dave
I like that idea, Dave
Oh - Saka was in there but a touch greedy in the finish. But why not?
Half-time. England romping it 0-6.
Half time
6-0.... that's it for me boys
Talk to you guys at the weekend
TTFn
England half a dozen up at the half. Harry Kane with a Barber Shop Quartet of goals with Steve doing the singing in that genre.
Cheers, Dave. Great chatting . Enjoy the rest of the day
Franco Varrella's side with a mountain to climb in the second half.
Agreed, Steve. It's higher mountain than Everest. Do you concur?
BPF and his family may not want to take a vacation in Italy anytime soon. He's made several decent saves to keep it 0-0 in Belfast
I think it's more likely that FIFA will give a qualifying berth to Cornwall and the Isle of Man before they do a pre-tourney round of no-hopers like Gibraltar, San Marino, Andorra, Kazakhstan.
If John Menditto was playing for San Marino, he'd have left to go watch Jackanory by now.
Three changes coming for England. Connor Gallagher, who nearly came to Leeds in the summer is on for his debut. Tammy Abraham and Ben Chilwell also on.
Tammy Abraham for Foden, Chilly for Maguire , and Connor Gallagher for Kal for his international debut. San Marino with two changes as the second half is underway
LOL, Steve. That Johnny is a clever one.
Steve will be interested to note that Harry Kane was Abel to score four first half goals because the opposition is so Spursy
LOL! That's a great Menditto story.
Is England thirsty enough to go seven up? I think they are
Kane's still on the pitch? That's a bit naughty Gareth.
I think The Isle of Man , Cornwall, and Jersey would be more competitive than San Marino and Gibraltar for sure
Northern Ireland nearly took the lead. Nice save by Donna's Ruma . Donna will be pleased
I'm hoping that England don't slack off in this second half the way that they did against Albania the other day.
The Swiss take the lead vs Bulgaria and as things stand Italy headed for the playoffs. Your thoughts.?
I'll bet that Harry threatened to kill Gareth's dog if he took him off at this point.
Eleven goals in two first halves. None too shabby
Oh - Smith-Rowe with a chipped effort. Audacious!
Cheeky lob from ESR didn't come off. I want Saka to get a goal more than him anyway.
Italy and Portugal in the payoffs. Swiss and Serbia through. Those are shockers ion these scores hold
Poor back heel from Harry Kane. That's his Spurs form
Batistini booked for Zrowing down Emil Smith. Which will be higher . SM card or England goals?
Yeah, that challenge on ESR is what I'm worried about. Sub him.
OH! Tammy Abraham misses a sitter. trying to be too cute with the chip and over with just the keeper to bear off a nice through ball from Harry Kane
Austria three up vs Moldova. Arnautovic at the double, this time from the spot
Oh what a miss for Abraham. Served on a plate by Kane. Abraham impresses me at an under-21 aspirant.
GOAl! ear puits england seven up. nice finish off a pass from tammy abraham
ESR!!! That's how you do it Tammy.
That's the best goal of the night. ESR on the end of a superb team move.
And I'm off to class. Now, then - let's have no conceding eight goals while I'm teaching.
Swiss two up vs Bulgaria . Italy in trouble
Cheers, Bob. Enjoy the class. Great chatting with you
Steve you must be delighted py that last goal. Started by Saka with the great and pass , nice finish from ESR, and nice back heel from Tammy Abraham
Cheerio, Bob. Leave it on vibrate for distracting updates for me and David. :}
Israel two up vs the Pharaohs. Moldova pulls it back to 3-1 in Vienna
Very happy. What would make my night complete is for Saka to get a goal. I'm concerned about his Euro hangover.
The Pharaohs pull it back to 2-1 in Israel
Reese James on for Harry Kane . Is Gareth shutting up shop?
I'm confident Saka will regain his club form
Connor Gallagher volleys straight to the keeper off a nice chipped pass from Chilly.
Poland ties it up vs the Magyars. Too little, too late
Commanding defending from Mings to shut down an unusual foray out of their own half.
Saka takes a hack. Looks ok but that's heart in mouth stuff at mine.
Not sure why Gareth has two right backs and a left back on the pitch. Is Reese James an out and out winger this match?
Swiss three up vs Bulgaria . They look like winning the group
I thought that odd too.
Dante Rossi off for his second booking for a foul from behind on Connor Gallagher. Stupid as he had been booked for the hand ball for the offside appeal
GOAL ! MINGS THE MERCILESS PUTS ENGLAND EIGHT UP OFF A NICE HEADER FROM A TAA FREE KICK. HIS FIRST ENGLAND GOAL
Rossi gets a welcome early bath for that hack on Gallagher. TAA wafts one in and Mings heads it home. 8-0. Wow.
Swiss not three up. Still 2-0 vs Bulgaria. The goal was disallowed for offside
San Marino should be banned from international competition if they intentionally cheat because they're getting thrashed
GOAL ! HEY JUDE ! ENGLAND NINE UP , MATCHING THE RESULT VS LUXEMBOURG IN DECEMBER 1982
VAR CHECKING? FOR WHAT?
Possible foul by Tammy Abraham . I think this may be called off.
It's disallowed. Still eight up. Why was Tammy Abraham booked? He barely touched the guy
Johns Stones on as Emil Smith is Rowed off
Gallagher is so unlucky as it hits the post, but the ball is recycled back in and Bellingham hits an unstoppable shot.
Hold up. Thie fussy ref has wiped Jude's goal out for something inscrutable.
Bobby Mane looking none too pleased in the manager's hot seat. Steve , you must like that
Abraham booked for probably asking WTF. This ref, we shouldn't complain up 8-nil, but he's astonishingly fussy. I don't want to see him again.
