A Big Night for Concacaf Qualifying

Evening, chaps - it's a big night in Concacaf qualifying tonight, with the US hosting El Salvador in Columbus, while Mexico and Jamaica square off as well. This is an eminently winnable match for Greg Berhalter's side, as El Salvador currently lie seventh in qualifying. It'll be vital for them to pick up all three points heading into the critical top two match up with Canada at the weekend.

I'll be a bit in and out of the action tonight what with dinner and such, but join in if you're watching on ESPN2.

Evening, David - great to have you on board. The coverage has just started and it looks like ideal conditions for the US to take on El Salvador. Subzero with a bit of snow coming down in Columbus. Lovely.

The US line-up for tonight:

Tuner, Dest, Zimmerman, Richards, A. Robinson, Adams, Musah, McKennie, Pulisic, Weah, Ferreira.

6:35 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The big gamble appears to be playing Ferreira instead of Ricardo Pepi tonight.

6:39 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Thanks, Bob.Glad to be around . Great conditions for playing a team from Central America.I guess Pepi is dropped because he hasn't scored the past few matches.

Great memories of the SnowBowl match against ES in Denver a few years back. One of my favorite US matches.

Teams out on the pitch now enjoying the anthems.

6:54 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The Salvadorans desperately need some singing lessons.

6:56 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The commentary team of Champ and TT will be a test off endurance for the LOB bloggers. Champ complaining that 25 degrees is too cold. we have colder morn ing than that here in the Mountains of North Carolina

6:56 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Also 25 degrees celsius which is 77 Fahrenheit would not be the hottest WC as Champ stated. He seems to exaggerate for effect

6:57 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Steve will be interested to hear that Matt Turner, who plays in goal for the US tonight, is close to a move from the Revolution to his beloved Arsenal.

6:58 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I reckon that those 1994 matches in Orlando and Dallas will still be the hottest WC matches on record.

6:59 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed about the 19954 WC. Those were really hot matches

7:00 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Steve will be delighted. Its will be at the end of the 2022 MLS season, so I guess just under a year from now. Probably just before or just after the 2022 WC

7:01 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

They're off from Columbus, Ohio.
COME ON USA!

7:01 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

And we're underway in Columbus, El Salvador kicking us off wearing all white. US playing in an atrocious MC Escher inspired blue and red number.

7:01 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

If Champ thinks Columbus is too cold he should try out WNY

7:03 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I'm not a fan of the USA kit. I think they debuted the kit in November

7:03 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Indeed - we got another six inches over night and are expected 8=10 inches tonight. Windchill of -25 today.

7:04 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Jon Champion has gotten a wee bit too accustomed to Southern California weather.

7:05 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Uneven start for the US so far - not really clicking yet.

7:06 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

YIKES! We were thinking a windchill of 5 expected tomorrow night while cold compared to South Texas not nearly as cold as what you are expecting

7:06 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

It's what the people around here are used to - no big deal.

7:07 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, Bob. Champ wouldn't even like the weather on the NC/GA border

7:07 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

They're a tough bunch in WNY for sure

7:08 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Weah was away there and should have been able to get a ball over but Dominguez did well to track back to win a goal kick.

7:09 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Weah played down the rtioght and appeared to have won corner , but it was given as a goal kick

7:09 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I think you're really going to enjoy the four seasons in NC.

7:10 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - Ferreira got free there and pulled a ball back that Pulisic latched onto. His shot was blocked. US starting to stretch the Salvadorans.

7:13 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed. We will have the four seasons here and despite that it's cool, but not too cold in the winter and the Summers will be in the mid 80s which is rather pleasant after the brutal Summers in South Texas

7:14 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm sure that you'll take mid-80s after all those years in the Harlingen steam bath.

7:15 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - big chance for Ferreira there. Blasted over the top.

7:16 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Best chance of the match for the U.S. Cross from McKinnie headed by Antonee Robinson to Ferreira then back to Robinson then back to ferreira who went past the defender and shot over with just the keeper to beat

7:17 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Definitely. Looking for ward to the most tolerable Summer since the mid 80s

7:17 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - what a miss by Ferreira! Great ball in by Dest, flicked on by Weah and Ferreira misses from about four yards.

7:20 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Another missed sitter by Ferreira Serge Dest played down the right , his cross headed on by Timmy Weah then Ferreiras blasted over at the far post from a yard out

7:20 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Berhalter's gamble doesn't seem to be working out.

7:21 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - Ferreira nearly played in Weah now - corner won.

7:21 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Timmy yeah tackled for a corner off a pass from Antonee Robinson

7:22 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm off to help Kate with the dinner prep. Back in a tick.

7:23 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

El Salvador winning free kicks for really soft challenges.

7:24 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Cheers . What's on the menu tonight?

7:24 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Not too far wide by Alex Rodan from just outside the box off a nice through ball from Duenas

7:29 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Nasty by Dominguez on Ferreira . Should have been booked for that

7:30 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Off the free kick, Serge Dest has a pass cleared for a corner

7:30 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Tim Weah down for the U.S., , but back up. It appeared that he took an awkward tumble

7:32 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

More frustration for the US team.

7:36 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

You didn't really miss much. I'm sure the dinner prep is more entertaining depending upon the menu

7:40 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Timmy Weah should have worked the keeper but shot wide after a pass from Antonee Robinson. It must have been blocked as a corner was given and nothing came from the corner

7:43 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A minute of stoppage time

7:46 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It's 0-0 at the half in Columbus

7:47 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Jamaica vs Mexico is 0-0 a few minutes before halftime

7:47 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Finally I can join you after a frustrating wait for a charge and an even more frustrating performance. We need strikers that can take their chances and so far, Ferreira and Weah have not been composed enough to work their keeper. Pulisic seems a little put-off with the attention he's received. Dest and Robinson can't get behind their defense.

I'd really like to switch in Pepe for Ferreira. Pepe hasn't beek scintilating recently, but I like him more than Ferreira who is just uncomposed and lightweight.

Hoping for a renewed focus on sticking the ball past these chumps.

8:00 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The second half is underway from Columbus

8:02 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Good evening Steve. Agreed. We should be thrashing these mugs and a very accurate description

8:04 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

TT agrees with steve that pepi needs to come on for Ferreira

8:04 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm back after a lovely pasta and salad to enjoy the second half. 0-0 in both matches tonight. Very frustrating first half of the US. Must be better.

Welcome, Steve!

8:05 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A better cross from Antonee Robinson and Alex Roldan got just in front of Ferreiora to head away

8:06 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Welcome back, Bob. Sound like a tasty meal

8:06 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Weah wins a corner

8:06 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

McKinnie out jumps the keeper , but the defensive header was headed back to the relieved keeper

8:07 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

WAY HAY ! ANOTNEE ROBINSON GOIVES TYHE U.S. THE LEAD

8:09 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Yes! Antony Robinson breaks the deadlock ghosting in at the back post to hammer home.

1-0!

8:10 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

At last. Robinson with the breakthrough after good work from Weah. 1-0!

8:10 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It was the first time that Timmy Weah got behind the El Salvador defense as he got past two defenders then forced a kick save from the keeper then headed on by Ferreira to Robinson, who scored with a great finish

8:10 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That puts the U.S. top , a point ahead of Canada, who just kicked off in Honduras and three points ahead of Mexico, who are currently drawing 0-0 in Jamaica

8:11 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Tim Weah really made that goal bursting through on the right. He's been the difference tonight.

8:12 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Great save by Gonzalez by Ferreira . Cross from Weah chested down by Musa to Ferreira

8:12 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - Musah nearly makes it 2-0! Good save by Gonzalez!

8:12 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Oh! Musah is robbed. A great piece of improvisation denied by their keeper.

8:13 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A U.S. corner is frantically cleared for another

8:13 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

All US pressure now - a corner chance.

8:13 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - McKennie with a header from the corner just over the top.

8:14 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! McKinniie should have put the U.S. two up. A free header off the corner headed over

8:14 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Ach! Wide open opportunity and McKennie can't keep his header down.

8:14 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Duenas and Calvillo on for El Salvador. They really haven't responded since the goal.

8:15 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Calvillo for Duenas

8:15 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Some great news for the U.S. as ten man Jamaica takes the lead vs Mexico

8:15 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Silky stuff from #21 to put the ball into touch

8:16 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Mexico third, slightly ahead of Panama ope goal difference, who are in the playoff spot. Panama kickoff in Costa Rica in about fifty minutes

8:17 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

So, the US are on top of the table now on 18 points, one point ahead of Canada who aren't playing tonight. The match on Sunday is big.

8:18 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

My mistake - the Canadians are playing tonight away to Honduras and they're 0-1 up.

8:19 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Number 21 faffing about in his own box, gifting the U.S., a corner

8:19 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Boy does that scoreline in Jamaica make our next match against the Canucks a must win. Home free if we hold on here and dish out some special poutine on the weekend.

Aha! Prospective Leeds man to make an appearance.

8:20 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That puts the Canadians top of the group. Honduras rock bottom

8:21 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Brendan Aaronson on for Pulisic

8:21 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Puliisic is replaced by Brendan Aaronson, who Leeds have been chasing. We've made a 20 million bid for him, which has been declined by Salzburg.

8:22 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Steve, you must be delighted that Matt Turner is headed to the EM, albeit in almost a year from now

8:22 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Aaronson on for Pulisic and I can't disagree with that.

Robinson nearly with his second!

8:22 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Decent near post saver by Gonzalez from Antonee Robinson

8:22 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I am. I fancy a bit of Matt and I think that makes Leno's renewal at the end of this season a long shot.

8:23 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Absolutely, Steve - the Canucks are back on top of the table. Goal difference might be a big factor, too, so the US really need to get some more tonight.

8:23 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That will be an interesting competition for the starting spot between Ramsdale and Turner. Jay Leno Berned as Gunners keeper and should be gone this Summer

8:26 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

In the tundra, at home against thsee mugs, we should be at least 3 to the good.

8:27 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Totally. We might rue those Ferreira misses in the first half.

8:27 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Turner gets the cup games. No way he vaults Ramsdale unless something calamitous happens to Aaron.

8:28 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Double substitution for the U.S. Zardes on fo r Ferreira on his home grounded Jordan Morris on for Timmy Weah after a long timer out with injury

8:29 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Naughty by Narciso for Zardes and not even a booking., Advantage should have been played

8:31 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

More-ish not as positive a move at would Pepi. Zardes will work very hard to keep their defenders busy while only adding just a bit of scoring threat. Weah's withdrawal makes no sense.

8:32 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Gonzalez a real Gil as he drops the free kick after colliding with his own teammate and now both el Salvador players are down

8:32 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

This keeper is giving me a hive. He's either pulling off the miraculous, or feigning injury. A fuera with him.

8:33 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed. Weah has been better but has played well this half . Beer holder with some questionable decision making

8:33 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed. , Steve. He needs to go afuera

8:35 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Beerholder is more lucky than good.

8:35 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, Steve. I will drink to that. Happy Hour will end in Qatar in November

Bonilla wins an El Salvador corner off of Tyler Addams

8:39 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Antonne Robison curls a shot straight to Gonzalez off a pass from Serge Dest after a cross from Antonee Robinson was headed out

8:42 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Aaronson hasn't done much for me yet.

8:42 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A rare chance for El Salvador and a free header for Rivas who glances it well wide

8:42 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Too casual from the US. We need to close down their crosses and bolt this one down.

8:43 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think Aaronson is Rusty because the Austriasn Bundesliga has been on Winter Break since December 11th. Still, he should be doing better

8:43 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Not yet. But this is an outlier performance from Brendan.

8:44 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Blanco brings down McKinnie and again , not even booked

8:44 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Zardes heads over the free kick from Aaronson

8:44 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Tyler addams fouled and yet another foul without even a booking

8:45 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Acosta on for Musah

8:45 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH, But for a poor touch by Zardes the U.S. would have scored.

8:46 PM
