The FA Cup Saga Begins Here!
Happy TGIF, chaps! I've hit my data writing goal today, so I'm settling in to watch the beginning of the long and winding road to the Cup Final in May. It all kicks off with a bang this evening with Swindon Town hosting the Premier League Champions Man City. The FA has given strict instructions to teams that there will be no postponements, as we saw yesterday in the Carabao, so they either need to show up or forfeit. That should make things interesting.
Join me from 3pm onward on the Plus, won't you?

Having beaten Crewe Alexandra and Walsall in previous rounds, Swindon Town have been rewarded for their efforts with the considerably trickier job of hosting Manchester City in their first third round FA Cup tie in 11 seasons.
No fewer than 72 places separate the League Two side from the runaway top flight leaders but a bout of Covid-19 in the Manchester City camp has provided Swindon with a glimmer of hope ahead of kick-off.
The team news for this evening's clash:
Swindon: Ward, Odinayo, Iandolo, Conroy, Gladwin, Lyden, Simpson, KcKirdy, Kesler-Hayden, Hunt, Reed. Subs: Mildenhall, Crichlow, O'Brien, Williams, East, Parsons, Dabre, Cowmeadow, Grant.
Citeh: Steffen, Walker, Dias, Ake, Cancelo, Rodrigo, Gundogan, DeBruyne, Palmer, Bernardo, Jesus. Subs: Carson, Slicker, Laporte, Kayky, Bobb, Egan-Riley, Mbete, McAtee, Lavia.
Referee: Darren England
We're underway at Swindon in this 3rd Round match-up.
Fast start from Citeh, with Palmer forcing a good save from the Swindon keeper Ward.
Under intense pressure from Joao Cancelo, Jordan Lyden just fails to connect with an excellent Ellis Iandolo cross from the left. Good stuff from Swindon.
LOL! Less than 10 minutes in and Swindon goalkeeper Lewis Ward gets his first warning for time-wasting from referee Darren England after dawdling at great length over a goal-kick.
Cancelo works a shooting angle but fires well wide.
After a useful start, Swindon are starting to look overawed. And no wonder - Pep has put out a fairly impressive side for a 3rd round clash.
GOAL! Citeh are in front! Cole Palmer works his magic down the flank and lays one on a plate. Leeds have been interested in the Citeh youngster and no wonder!
0-1 Citeh!
Oh - Bernardo was nearly in for a second goal there. Citeh are all over Swindon.
Oh - Jesus weaves his way into the box and tees up KDB. Tame effort from the Belgian that was smothered by Ward.
Zack Steffen has to deal with a dodgy backpass. Good thing - he was in danger of falling asleep.
Hi Bob,
Sorry about being scarce!
I am here for a bit
City already ahead...I bet not many people know that Swindon are one of the 50 teams to play in the Premier League
Do you remember what season?
A lot of top players playing for City....I thought they were rampant with Covid
Palmer goes down in the box looking for something. Nothing doing from referee England.
Young Palmer with a horrible dive
GET UP!!
Geez....even Swindon play it it around their box....and City score
ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC!
Commentator says brilliant!!
KNOCK IT OFF....AWFUL PASS
STUPIDITY!
GOAL! Bit of a disaster there from the Swindon defense. They try to play it out of the back inadvisedly and give it up to Jesus, who plays a neat one-two with KDB and then slots home.
0-2!
They say brilliant from City....no it wasn't!!
They won the ball because of stupid pass....luncacy
Welcome, Dave - thanks for joining me. Sadly, this one is going predictably.
I totally agree with you about trying to play it out of the back at this level. L2 sides aren't good enough to do it - just lump it long.
Hi Bob
I just don't get it giving the ball away in your own box....because it is the 'way' to play
Palmer is looking really tasty - I hope that Leeds can get him on loan.
But the commentator gave them credit
Then went gaga over City!!
You and I could have scored given the ball inside the box!!
I get it for Premier League sides because lumping it just gives up possession to the other side most of the time but not at this level.
Is he supposed to go to ER?
Swindon defenders haven't learned anything - a Swindon guy just retrieved the ball in the box and instead of turning and wellying it, he played it back to a teammate on the goal line!
Long ball is not always bad....a long ball can actually be won and the possession is not lost...If you lose possession...win it back....in the less dangerous end!
I guess I am just an Old Fart
We've expressed some interest. Bielsa is buds with Pep, so we've done some business with him over the years. Jack Harrison's loan and recent transfer is the most notable of those deals.
Do you know the season Swidon were in the Prem?
In that kind of approach, what's the point of midfielders?
Fingers crossed then for him to come
Harrison was good for Leeds until it became permanent...he doesn't look as good now
Oh - Bernardo got around the back there and pulled another decent save out of Ward.
They are part of winning the ball
Wining the second ball
Winning back possession....NOT IN YOUR OWN BOX
It's been a poor season for the whole side, in fairness.
Fair enough.
Walker clears a cross
Relentless City pressure with Swindon struggling to get the ball out of their own half.
Didn't like the cross....the color man says a "super flash cross"
Put on his head....he knocks it in at the back post
Well...you refuse to answer my trivia quesion.... Swindon were in the Premier League in the 1993-94 season.
They went down with the Blades and Oldham finishing bottom on 30 points in 42 games
It was back in the good old days....United won the Double....their fist of 3 in the 90s
The problem for long-ball advocates is that there aren't many examples of successful teams using it these days. It's notable that the teams in the Premier League who use it - Watford, Burnley, Newcastle under Steve Bruce, Norwich now under Dean Smith - are all threatened with relegation.
I remember a quote from Giggs when playing Swindon that season...one of the defenders said to him...I'll get you next season...Giggs said...no you won't!
Struth....thought that was in!!
Sorry, mate - I missed your question earlier. I do remember that season. Weren't they managed by Glen(da) Hoddle? It strikes me that they were one of those sides who played good football but weren't good enough to stay up.
I am not a advocate of always going long....I just am so anti-go short every time...pass it to a defender inside your own box even though there are three strikers standing less than 18 yards away!!
The are pressuring..go longer....it they aren't...build up
Nice one from Giggsy!
He was their manager the season before. I think he had moved to Chelsea by then...He was the Blues manager when United beat them 4-0 in the Cup Final
Totally agree - there has to be some dynamism, with short and long play depending on the situation. But defenders know that they're going to get a bollocking from the manager if they lump it rather than finding a man.
Half-time: Citeh predictably go in 0-2 up. It could be 0-6 or so.
I am off to pick up Kath
Talk to you tomorrow
TTFN
Teams coming back out for the second half now. Swindon have a big hole to dig out of.
Cheerio, Dave - see you in the morning!
Free kick chance for Swindon swung into a dangerous area but no one was following in and its gathered by Steffen.
Oh - Palmer, who has been a standout tonight, tries one from distance but it's deflected out for a corner.
KDB is down needing treatment now.
GOAL! Gundogan makes it 0-3 from the resulting free kick, bending it around the wall. I reckon that keeper Ward should have anticipated that one.
Penalty to City now! Jesus upended in the box.
Oh - great save by Ward!
That's another instance of the stutter step run-up not working. The penalty taker loses momentum with that nonsense, so Jesus' effort was weak.
That penalty save has lifted Swindon spirits a bit.
Now Swindon want a penalty, with Simpson going down in the box! Nothing doing.
Another Citeh youngster James McAtee comes on for KDB.
Now McAtee goes down looking for a pen. Darren England waves on once again.
Swindon double-substitution: Romoney Critchlow and Jonny Williams on for Ben Gladwin and Akin Odimayo.
Oh - Gundogan has a go from just outside the box. Sharp save by Ward.
Oh - short corner routine ends with Cole Palmer setting up McAtee for a go. Well over.
Now Bernardo and Palmer try to fashion another goal. Out for a corner.
Another excellent ball from Palmer to Gundogan who should have been able to square it.
GOAL! Swindon have one back! A quick break plays McKirdy through and he finishes well past Steffen on the near post.
1-3!
Steffen will want that one back. Not a good look for the American keeper who would like to edge Ederson out at some point.
Now Swindon have a free kick chance - they're tails are definitely up.
Oh - decent free kick in and Krichlow just can't keep his header down.
GOAL! Cole Palmer gets the goal that he deserved tonight. Bernardo has a shot blocked off and it comes to Palmer who sticks one in the top 90. Wow!
1-4!
Citeh's new Brazilian phenom Kayky is coming on for Cole Palmer now.
Oh - McAtee rockets one off the bar!
That's it - Citeh have negotiated their 3rd Round fixture with real professionalism. They've run out 1-4 winners.
I'll look for you lot in the morning - early start with a 7:15 am EST kickoff.
Cheerio!
