Dahlgren Day in the Cup!
Morning, boys! I hope you're enjoying your FA Cup 3rd Round weekend as much as I am. This morning, we've got matches of interest to the Dahlgren family starting with a challenging visit to the capital for my beloved Leeds United to meet up with West Ham. David Moyes has had Marcelo Bielsa's number since we returned to the Premier League, but perhaps the the magic of the Cup will help us today. That's followed by high flying Arsenal's visit to Championship side Nottingham Forest. It should be a fascinating afternoon.
Join me for all the action.

The coverage for the big match has started on ESPN+ - wahay!
The teams coming out on bright January afternoon at Upton Park:
West Ham: Areola, Fredericks, Dawson, Diop, Johnson, Rice, Soucek, Bowen, Lanzini, Vlasic, Antonio. Subs: Yarmolenko, Fornals, Noble, Masuaku, Kral, Randolph, Okoflex, Alese, Baptiste.
Leeds: Meslier, Ayling, Llorente, Hjelde, Firpo, Bate, Koch, James, Klich, Harrison, Greenwood. Subs: Forshaw, Raphinha, Klaesson, Dallas, Drameh, Summerville, McCarron, Jenkins, Moore.
Referee: Stuart Attwell.
A very strong West Ham side today, whilst Marcelo Bielsa tries out some of the kids, including 18 year-old Lewis Bate, who we got from Chelsea this summer. It'll be my time watching him.
I like seeing your youngsters given a go. That's what the cup is all about, giving it a go, enjoying seeing players who don't always feature, and snatching a win here and there. MOT!
Some good build up play from us and Jack has a chance to swing in a cross but overcooks it.
Morning, Steve - great to have you on board this morning.
I totally agree - this is a perfect opportunity for 18 year old Lewis Bate, who picked up from Chelsea this summer. He's been shining in the Academy side recently and Bielsa really rates him.
A bit of a slow start to this one - I thought that West Ham might try to punk us early.
Also my first look at Leo Hjelde, an 18 year-old Norwegian who can play either at center back or right back.
We should have made more of that mistake.
Oh - Jared Bowen with a chance there that's cleared off the line by Luke Ayling. Close call.
Decent move there and Sam Greenwood nearly got in.
Oh - Antonio has a go from the top of the box and it's deflected off Llorente for a corner.
I just noted that Attwell has been given this game. He should sit out a few in the Championship for that shower of a performance last time out. He's a serial incompetent.
I like how we're fighting for every second ball.
Oh - Firpo puts Dan James away and he gets to the by-line but then his ball is to no one.
We've done reasonably well in the first quarter hour and can use this foundation to play our way into the match.
Oh - first chance for Lewis Bate to stretch his legs. Tried a curler but it didn't trouble the WH keeper.
Leeds fans singing Marcelo Bielsa's name now - well in!
Greenwood picks up the ball some 40 yards out and has a go. Well over the bar.
WH have a free kick chance now. Mark 'em up!
Half way through the first half and we're still hanging in there.
Good morning Bob and Steve. Here to join you until the movers arrive
Morning, David - thanks for joining me.
Morning guys
Not sure if I am going to be around today.
I might have to take Jon to to a wake for his friend's dad
It is far away and the roads are ice!
Liverpool losing at home...lovely
West Ham fans getting a bit restless at this point.
Morning, Dave - I hope you have a safe trip with Jon.
Both West Ham/Leeds and United/Villa play each other back to back in the League and Cup
Neither side getting their teeth into this one yet. Llorente has shepherded Antonio well however.
Oh - Bate had a chance on the volley there at close range but got it all wrong. I feel bad for the kid.
Too cute there from Sam Greenwood with the backheel. He has to make more of those kinds of chances.
This season in the 150th anniversary of the FA Cup...I remember the Leeds/Arsenal Cup Final was the Centenary Cup Final in 1972
I think this is the 141st edition with years missed for the world wars
Bugger....Hammers take the lead
And just like that, we're 1-0 down. A bit of a scramble and Lanzini is there to poke home. (sigh)...
Didn't last long
Pool on equalize vs the Shrews
Shame - West Ham hadn't done much up until that point. There is a VAR check on it, though. Please please please.
VAR checking... could it be offside... two men offside...are they 'active'
Bowen was perhaps playing an active role in the attack from an offside position. Come on, VAR!
It shouldn't count...Bowen was involved
What's taking so long....I hate this crap!
The goal stands - we were robbed there.
They count it.... so inconsistent!!!
THIS IS RIDICULOUS!
Come on, boys - let's get it back.
Of course, I don't like goals called back for nothing but if it takes that long...it is obvious he is involved
Bowen clearly offside, but VAR faffing around wasting minutes. And then getting it wrong. VAR is only handled worse in the MLS.
100% offside because of the law
Morecambe leading at Spurs!
This ref...., clear embarrassment, backed to the hilt by incompetents.
Decent move there wins a corner through Jack.
"Bring me sunshine..."
Phew! Antonio was in there but just couldn't reach the cross. It looks like's injured himself.
Hatters 4-0 vs Harrogate
I watched the first half from Kennilworth Road
Have you seen the away fans entrance at the KR
It is between Coranation Street houses...
https://footballgroundguide.com/leagues/england/championship/kenilworth-road-luton-town.html
...bring me laughter, all the while"...
Did you ever visit Kenilworth Road. I don't we ever did. Mark Enderle was saying on FB that it was the first ground he went to.
Nice one Steve!!
I never went to KR
Shame that Mellier couldn't hold onto that once he had his hands on it.
Never went to Kenilworth. I think Norwich and Ipswich were more attractive while I was there, and just as easy to drive to.
Three minutes of stoppage time to come.
Meslier took Firpo out with that catch.
After that lovely duet of Bring Me Sunshine by the Dahlgren Brothers...I have to leave
I'll be listening to SXM radio in the car
It is nasty out there!
The movers are here. Hopefully they will be finished by the late match.
Half-time: We've done reasonably well under the circumstances and have even had a few decent chances but we're obviously missing a sharp edge up front. I haven't been convinced by Sam Greenwood when I've watched the U-23 clips online and this performance hasn't changed my view.
Meslier and Firpo should be able to walk those injuries off. Just get into the dressing room and sort it out.
Oh - WH was away there but Meslier was somehow able to save. He doesn't look 100% though.
I hope you can continue to patch Mellier up. He looked a bit slow to get to Bowen's shot at the end.
There goes the half time whistle. Unlucky to be behind Bob. Put something in the half-time tea and get this one back.
I'm hoping that Bielsa can use the players' obvious anger over the goal to fire them up.
I cannot believe that after last week, Attwell in those five minutes of deliberation didn't trot over to the monitor and watch Bowen's offside position. The muppet running the VAR is to blame for not being decisive enough, but Attwell's in charge of that situation and he's bollixed it up in successive games. Just shameful.
Half-time scores around the country:
Cardiff 1 PNE 0
Charlton 0 Norwich 0
Liverpool 2 Shrewsbury 1
Spurs 0 Morecombe 1
Stoke 1 Leyton Orient 0
Wolves 1 Sheffield Utd 0
Teams coming back out - I see Stu Dallas stripped off and ready to come on.
Wahay! Raphinha also coming on.
Greenwood and Bate has been withdrawn. So, Bielsa's having a go here.
Raph on for Greenwood is a positive move.
The commentary team seem bemused by Dan James being used up front, but that's what we've been doing for weeks now with Lord Bamford and Rodrigo both out.
Phew! Antonio showed Luke a clear pair of heels and fortunately didn't connect with anyone with his cross.
Oh - Raph got to the by-line but couldn't find Dan.
Oh - great save with his legs by Meslier!
Luke tries to find Dan's run but the ball floats harmlessly into Areola's arms.
Vlasic buys a cheap one there - he had just slipped over. Referee Atwell conned again.
Fortunately, Lanzini scoops it into the wall.
I've been pleased by Leo Hjelde so far - he's been really steady. With Coop, Struijk and Cresswell all out, he might be a decent option.
Luke Ayling is being replaced now with Adam Forshaw. Odd one - maybe he picked up a knock or is being saved for next week's match.
I want to see Raph attacking the area there instead of passing it off.
Looks like we've switched to a back three in order to push Firpo further up.
I like the look of Hjelde as well. David would say that he's Hjelde up well.
I don't really think that West Ham have got out of first gear today. It feels as if they've got the ability to beat us handily but can't be bothered.
LOL! Nice one, Steve!
I assume that the movers came and that David's having to supervise that effort.
Another attack peters out for us - no sharp edge.
The Hammers are in a slump at the moment. This should be nil-nil.
Klich looks as if he's twanged something now.
Totally agree.
Another clash between Meslier and Firpo now - they've been in the wars today.
I just don't see why Firpo is still down in the 65th minute only 1 goal from being on equal terms.
Firpo looks dazed and will have to come off - concussion protocol.
Young Cody Drammeh to replace him.
Twenty minutes left for us to rescue this one. We really haven't had a chance in this half.
Firpo should have the self-esteem to secrete himself in the dressing room. From my living room, I don't see that his collision with Messleir was bad enough to stun him.
Phew! Dangerous cross over there and Drameh just didn't enough to put Bowen off.
It's about time that Stuart Atwell started pulling out the cards. Lanzini into the box.
Oh - how did Dan not score there?! That's the sort of chance we need to take advantage of.
That's the sort of chance that Bamford was instinctively finishing last season for us.
Lanzini just demonstrated the need to adopt sin-bins. An orange for a cynical foul disrupting a Leeds attack that leaves West Ham down a man for 10 minutes would be much fairer than making Lanzini mind his Ps and Qs for the rest of the match.
I like that idea a lot.
Declan Rice tries to curl one in from wide, but doesn't really threaten Meslier.
Fornals coming on to replace the naughty Lanzini.
James is not an instinctive striker. He's been pressed into the position because of the injuries that have robbed you of Bamford, Roberts, etc. He's better on the wing and cutting inside or getting behind the defense and providing the chance to someone with more lethal finishing.
Our young Dutchman Crysencio Summerville is coming on to replace Hjelde now - an attacking move from Bielsa.
Agreed - he's best running down the left for us. I would have loved to have seen the connection that he might have made with Bamford.
Really soft yellow card there for Cody.
See, Lanzini now off the pitch and West Ham retain their lead despite his cynical behavior. It's an early rule change.
Crysensio on the pitch. That's a stonking great first name.
I sure hope that you pick up a center forward in the remaining transfer period.
Phew! A risky ball out falls to Fredericks who whipped one across the area. Could easily have gone in the at the backpost.
We just picked up a young kid from Espanyol but he's one for the U-23 side.
My main hope for the transfer period is hanging on to Kal and Raph and perhaps picking up Cole Palmer, who lit it up for City the other night, on loan.
Bollocks! Another call that doesn't go your way.
Big shout for a penalty there - probably shoulder rather than arm but close.
Kai's injured so that helps you keep him until the summer. And I just can't see Bielsa allowing Raph to leave when you're not yet assured of staying up.
We need one off the bum in the ten minutes or so. Come on!
That's my hope, too.
Oh - that was the chance! Dan James again fluffs it.
James again! How does he keep missing? He's have snaffeled up both of his chances in a Wales shirt. Sorry Bob.
That was very similar to the chance that Joe Gelhardt converted against Brentford recently.
Summerville and Jack not quite on the same wavelength.
MOT! Great sound from the Leeds faithful in the away end.
Four minutes of stoppage time to rescue this one now - come on!
Raph nearly onto that one.
We're finishing strongly here. Good to see.
Cody wins a corner now - come on!
Ilan is coming up for the corner!
West Ham break and Bowen kills off the match.
Shit. Sorry mate. Though with Covid fixture pile-up, not having FA cup games can only help. Get your squad healthy and get the league sorted.
Full-time: I'm not entirely displeased with that one. We played reasonably well and might have at least taken the match to extra time. But we're obviously light up front.
Next weekend is more important for us.
I'll be back in an hour for the Gunners.
I'm back from washing the dishes and tidying up around the place for the late one. it's Arsenal, currently in 4th against Forest in 9th in the Championship hoping to get into the playoffs.
The line-ups:
Nottingham Forest: Samba, Spence, Worrall, McKenna, Cook, Garner, Colback, Johnson, Zinckernagel, Yates, Davis.
Subs: Horvath, Tobias Figueiredo, Grabban, Joao Carvalho, Bong, Cafu, Xande Silva, Ojeda, Taylor.
Arsenal: Leno, Cedric, White, Holding, Tavares, Sambi Lokonga, Patino, Saka, Odegaard, Martinelli, Nketiah.
Subs: Biereth, Hutchinson, Tierney, Lacazette, Chambers, Pablo Mari, Kolasinac, Ramsdale, Oulad M’hand.
Referee: Craig Pawson (South Yorkshire)
Arsenal are missing their African Cup of Nations crew but are still putting out a fairly strong line-up including Saka, Odegaard and Martinelli who have been excellent in Arsenal's recent run of form. 18 year-old Charlie Patino gets a debut.
We're underway at the City Ground. Strange that this was a standard Division 1 ground back in the day but Forest have been in the wilderness as long as we were.
Arsenal wearing all-white today, as a charity and awareness effort.
Not a huge amount of rhythm from either side so far.
Not a lot going on in this match, to be fair.
Teams coming back out for the second half now - it's 0-0 and all to play for.
Forest seem to have adopted "Mull of Kintyre" as their theme song, for no apparent reason.
I am back
Roads were okay but our street. was awful!!
Almost went off the road twice!
Phew! Glad you made it back safely.
You haven't missed much in this one - it's been a damp squib. Arsenal clearly can't be fussed to win it. They're already thinking about that postponed League Cup match with Liverpool coming up.
Oh - Forest break and nearly score - great save by Leno.
The radio commentators weren't very appreciative of Arsenals white numbers!!
Forest are really giving it a go now and Arsenal will have to be careful. I'd stick some subs on to freshen things up.
It's a really weird kit.
Brought on Tierney on after 20 minutes!
Player going off wasn't too happy
What do you think about the 4th round draw?
Again, Chelsea sent some money to the FA to get a minnow at the Bridge
All for Knife Violence Awareness
Arsenal should go for it...don't want Extra Time!
Free kick chance for Forest
I think Martinelli did jump in
Decent effort...saved
I miss Forest being in the Top League
I've arrived and everyone else has buggered off
Inside the last 20... so many games you think will be good... are rubbish
Still can't believe the West Ham opener counted!
Free kick chance for the All Whites
Awful chip into the box
Goal kick
Martinelli with a tackle and a yellow
That could have been more than yellow...perhaps a pink
That is the type of tackle that should be punished....some tackles that get yellows are nothing compared to that
Forest free kick...any better...no....the Arsenal went straight thru the box...this one never made it in the box
STUPID
Just under 25,000 at the City Ground today
Arsenal with a chance...I think Saka should have laid it back instead of going across the box
Ten minutes to go... will the be a winner?
Well, before ET and/or Pens
Sorry, mate - my friend Paul Facetimed me for a bit. He's going through chemo for pancreatic cancer. Rough prognosis for him.
This one seems to be going to extra time.
Grabban off the bench is on the end of a dangerous cross... and Forest take the lead
8 minutes to go
Nope - Forest have scored! What a turn-up!
Yikes...sorry mate
Forest knocked out Arsenal at this point four years ago
Only time Arsenal had big knocked out at this stage for over 20 years....one and only time under Wenger
Good run by the Forest man...then goes to the corner there
I remember that match - I think our old boy Eric Lichaj scored the winner that day.
Arsenal need to step up the pace and go forward!
I hope this isn't the second of the trifecta of results in the Cup this weekend for the LOB regulars
McKenna knees it back...keeper picks it up....still...very risky!!
Nice move by Forest...great turn and pass.... shot blocked
I'm hoping that too, mate.
Arsenal haven't really shown any urgency at all today.
Lewis Grabban used to give us fits in the Championship, too.
Arsenal get the ball in the box...over the first man and no one else in the box....THEY NEED A GOAL!! CRASH THE BOX!!!
What do you think about the draw
Cambridge v Luton
Kidderminster v West Ham
Chelsea v Plymouth
City v Fulham
Pool v Cardiff
United/Villa v Boro
on comes an Arsenal sub...not exactly offensive!
Only 2 minutes of the 90 left
Long throw....cleared
Still no urgency....they are just passing the ball around....WHAT'S THE POINT!!!
Lose possession with ball never getting in the box!
Another long throw
Not sure what the point of throwing on Kolasinac now is. Three minutes of stoppage time.
Cleared again
Ref called a foul throw
Again, I miss Forest in the top league
Bloody hell - we could have had Kidderminster away!
The announced 3 is up.... still playing on
You've got a nice one at home to Boro if you can get by Stevie G's lot.
Is it me....still no urgency from Arsenal...they are going backwards and sideways and it is over
I JUST DON'T GET IT!!
Wow! Arsenal are out at the first hurdle!
Where is the the brain.
Sorry Steve
Forest go into the fourth round and will host the holders
Take care Bob
I'll be around for the first half of United tomorrow and near the end
That's the end of a fairly miserable day for the Dahlgrens in the Cup. Hoping for better from you lot tomorrow. I have to head over to campus for a bit tomorrow, so I probably won't be around on the blog. Maybe keep up via text?
