The Friends to the North
Afternoon, chaps - I'm settling in to enjoy the big WC qualifier this afternoon. It's not exactly a must-win for Greg Berhalter's US outfit but a loss would be a real blow in World Cup qualifying. So, I expect them to play it cautiously against a dangerous opponent this afternoon. Come on, you Yanks!
246 Comments:
Even if this is being played in a stadium about as impressive as the one at LHS, Canada are no mugs anymore. We'll have to upgrade the performance today.
Afternoon, Steve - I'm into the Paramount Plus site but still trying to find the match on there. They're desperately trying to suggest that I watch some re-runs of Blue Bloods.
Wahay - I've got it pulled up finally. The preview package is on.
Afternoon Boys
Double dipping NFL/WCQ
Yeah, same by they want me to watch some western 1865.
Love Blue Bloods
I may be locked out because they've wised up and are limiting the number of viewers on one sub. I'm off for the Andres and Nico Cantor version.
Good Afternoon everyone..I'm watching Paramount Plus on Roku TV. It's a double header. Mexico vs Costa Rica after this . Not sure if I'll watch that match
The line-ups for today's match:
Canada - Borjan, Johnston, Vitoria, Miller, Buchanan, Maye, Laryea, Adekugbe, Larin, Osorio, David.
US: Turner, Robinson, Richards, Robinson, Dest, Aaronson, Adams, McKennie, Musah, Zardes, Pulisic.
Why dont Canada wear red/?
I look at the foreign legion for the Canucks and wonder if the US's immigration policy was more humane whether the likes of Larin, David, Davies, and Buchanon would be US players.
Still so ticked off this match isn't available on a TV set in the US!!
It is the top of the table clash
Anthems now.
I think a draw would be a decent result.Expecting Mexico to defeat Costa Rica and Panama should defeat Jamaica. The other match is the battle for the wooden spoon
Dre and Mo on the Mic....get grown up names!!
Good afternoon everyone
Shame Mexico scored two inside the last ten minutes to win in Jamaica
Derby scored two goals after the 87th minute to draw 2-2 at home to Brum
Cardiff beat Forest
Hi David
The stadium has a capacity of 24,000 but since it's supposed to be 50% that permits 12,000 supporters. Sure looks a lot more than that
Hello Dave
Afternoon, David - how are you, mate?
They're off from Hamilton, Ontario
We're away from Hamilton - not too far away from me - about two hours from here.
Doing well, thank you for asking. Just got back from a walk to the lake on a lovely day and ready to chat. How are you?
WOW! Your'e much closer to a Canadian venue than a venue in the U.S.
I see what you mean, Dave. I don't like Canada wearing all black
What on earth the Canadian keeper wearing!!
You got a score hat-trick against a guy were sweatpants !!
I'll be curious to watch young Brendan Aaronson today - still the off chance that Leeds can seal the deal with him by tomorrow evening. We've offered £20 million.
LOL! Definitely, Dave - sounds like the sort of thing that the bloke from the Faroe Islands used to wear.
I never got an hello from Bob...feel privileged David
Useless free kick delivery
Atrocious free kick from Pulsic cleared by the first man
McKennie with a strange long throw technique - I'd call that a foul throw.
US start on the front foot
I don't blame you, Dave. He definitely needs to say hello
Sorry, Dave - love ya!
The Hungarian keeper, Karaly used to wear gray sweatpants and had a spell with Palace. I nicknamed him Captain Sweatpants
Well in, Bob.
ouch....straight down the middle
One Nil Cannucks
BUGGER! Kyle Larin give the Canadians the lead with a well place ed finish off a nice through ball. The U.S. defense fell asleep
Bloody hell - the Canadians have taken the lead early on. Not good.
Not good positioning from the keeper either....too close to the near post
TD KC
Bad mistake from M. Robinson to let them in like that.
Not sure why the U.S. fell asleep off a poor goal kick. It was headed on at the halfway line then Kyle Larin played a one two with Jonathan David before scoring with just Matt Turner to beat
Modern Day Corner....doesn't beat first man
It is dangerous the ONE in a MILLION times it is won at the front post
Let's get back it back, boys!
That was better...headed wide
Richards might have done better with that header.
Chris Richards heads wide from the corner from Pulisic . Expected better from the Hoiffenheim player on loan from Bayern
Pulisic out muscles his marker then goes on a run down the left but a poor pass is straight to Sweatpants Borjan
I love the nickname "Sweatpants." That's classic, David!
Stop diving Puli
Cheers, Bob. Thought you all might like that one.
There's not cohesion to the US attack so far.
Who are these commentators?
Pulisic with a shot blocked by Corey Miller off balance
Decent ball there from Aaronson to Pulisic there. I liked that. But he's taking up a position that Raphinha does for Leeds, so that's a non-starter.
I think one of the announcers is Mo Edu. The other one might be John Strong.
Zardes has basically been too lightweight in the U.S. attack up to this point
Serge Dest wins a corner off a pass from Musah
The corner from McKinnie easily cleared away
I mentioned it earlier...when I was being ignored
Guys named Mo and Dre
Definitely - why isn't Pepi playing up front today?
No one puts Dave in the corner.
That was a foul...ref not blowing it up
More nice stuff from Aaronson.
CROSS THE BALL WITH SKILL
PLAYERS CAN'T CROSS ANYMORE!
Poor cross from Robinson early cleared away off a run and pass from Aaronson
Cross from Zardes poorly cleared then Aaronson has a shot blocked
The US are on the front foot still
They are attacking....I like to see it
Naughty by Corey Miller on Aaronson. Why is he getting away with so many of these challenges
It's about time for Miller to go into the ref's book.
Oh - a couple of decent chances for the Canucks but blocked out.
It really has been all the US
Steven Vittoria booked for a foul on a U.S. break after some desperate U.S. defense in their box. Steve will be suspended for the match in El salvador on Wednesday
Finally - Vitoria goes into the book for a blatant hack on Pulisic.
The only problem with the U.S. is despite doing just about all the attacking the final ball is off. They need to work Captain Sweatpants in the Canadian goal
Canada break off a poor pass from McKinnie
Now Borjan has been elevated to the rank of "Captain?"
Has anyone else noticed that this stadium looks like an L2 stadium?
Marc Anthony Kaye more like Danny as he was caught faffing about at the back , but got away with it
Marc Anthony Kaye again like Danny as he fouls Pulisic just outside the D
Free kick to the US
The pass was not good to start and the dribble wasn't either
Luckily got the foul
Now then - the US have a decent free kick chance. Must make the most of it.
Free kick from Pulsic well over.
Oh, dear - high, wide and 'orrible.
Really bad timing for Pulisic to be in such poor form. He won't get the arm around the shoulder from Herr Tuchel either
You can see houses in the background! It looks like a non-league ground.
The Canadians have been more negative than I'd expected. Who's their manager - Gary Megson?
Canada's manager is a Geordie named John Herdman. He previously managed the Canadian women's team and the Kiwis women's team
They said the stadium has a capacity of 24,000 which is a bout a Championship capacity. it reminds me of Selhurst Park in the middle of a neighborhood. Not the same quality
Oh - great save from Sweatpants!
OH! header from McKinnie tipped on to the bar by Boirjan U.S. unlucky not to be level
Of course, I bring up the sweatpants and David gets the credit
I feel like Basil Fawlty....I am going to go hit some guests
LOL! Love ya, Dave!
And don't mention the war.
Three minutes of stoppage time to come. An equalizer would be really timely.
Canada are a national team version of Leicester with whippets up front and attack dogs at the back. And it's working better than the US's Beerholder-ball.
LOL, Dave. Definite credit to you, but it did make me think of Kiraly once you brought itup. Sorry, Basil
Agreed, Steve. The Canadians are a lot like the Foxes.
Canada wins their first corner of the match
All USA... but they are losing
Canada one up at the half despite the U.S. dominating
I'm not convinced that the surface is natural grass? Does FIFA allow qualifiers to be played on astroturf?
Half-time: Neither side has looked particularly good this afternoon. The US have dominated against a Canadian side that has sat back for the most part and absorbed pressure. A draw is looking increasingly like a good result for the US today.
All to do in the second half, so typical Beer-holder ball performance. I don't care if Pepi crapped in Greg's Weeties, he simply must be given a go at the expense of Zardes. Zardes is a second half guy, a bod you throw on when we've run their defenders ragged.
Lamps confirmed at Goodison
Panel is upset with the US
I don't think Canada do anything!
Sport Day Central here in ENY
I have the NFL on the TV, WCQ in one window on the computer and another window with England vs Windies in T20 Cricket
There's a real difference when the Canadians get position and push the ball forward to Buchanon and Larin. They started to attack with real purpose. After the goal, the Canadians were happy to defend deep, denying the threat of Dest and Robinson. The US is too deliberate in the buildup, and our passing is not successful enough. All of the passing finds a player who has to make a real effort to control it. Second half started. C'mon USA. Just be better!!!
Canada now four points up on the US in second. Mexico play the Ticos later on, which gives them an opportunity to jump over the US into second. Panama play Jamaica. A win there would put them within a point of the US in fourth. This would be a very bad match to lose.
You are truly NocitoSportsCenter, Dave.
I've gone back to ignoring the NFL now that the Bills are out.
Underway again
AND TELL ZARDES HE'S THE FORWARD OUTLET FOR CHRISSAKES AND TO NOT DROP BACK INTO THE MIDFIELD. FFS,
Back for the second half. `
I would have taken off Zardes at the half for Peoi. He's done practically nothing
Another yellow card for the Canadians now.
Totally agree - who have we got on the bench to replace Zardes?
I just read the comment about Lamps being named the new Toffees manager. I think he will flop and a sign as two how far the Toffees have declined that he's the best manager willing to manage there. Could also be due to the fact that not many top managers are currently available at this stage of the season
THAT, from McKennie must stop!
Pepi would be my choice to replace Zardes. He's a match winner
I'd love to see Vitoria off for a second yellow before long.
Why would Puli cross that ball...he's inside the box...stops turns....passes it outside the box
They do know the goal is inside that box?
Same combo as for the goal win a Canadian break off a U.S. corner. Jonathan David on a run and found Kyle Larin, but fortunately his pass in to the box didn't't find anyone. A horrible lack of commitment in the U.S. challenges
Useless attempt of a dribble by Dest
Puli is struggling with form. He's just not enjoying his football and under too much pressure to be the US talisman.
How are Canada on top of the group?!?!?!
More uselessness by the Chelsea man
and again
Really poor outing for Pulisic today.
Yet another atrocious cross from Pulisic. This time win a U.S. break. Then easily tackled on the next possession
A player in form, doesn't just pick up the ball and waste it like that. Puli just can't get it done.
I was thinking the same thing, Dave. I just don't think any of the CONCACAF teams are that good this time around.
Puli shown the bye-line by some Canadian hump. And then he lost the ball.
Shame that Timothy Weah is out for Covid today - he was the bright spark the other night.
Liam Fraser on for Marc Anthony Danny Kaye
Kaye is replaced by Fraser for the Canucks.
Agreed about Tim Weah. Also agreed that CONCACAF just doesn't have good teams this time around. I didn't expect any of them to do well this time around
Decent effort there from McKennie and Aaronson but Sweatpants smothered it.
You guys would know better than me
What is wrong with the US?
They have a few players playing at top European teams
They have a well established home league
Why do they stink?
Sweatpants Biorjan with a comfortable save from Aaronson
I can't see any of these CONCACAF teams getting out of the group stage.
The U.S. has the players but they're horribly run. USSF is a shambles and they have horrible managers
Tactical naivitee for one.
Dangerous break from the U.S. but well wide by Tejan Buchanan.
Steve and I were chatting about this the other night. I think the problem with the strategy of getting as many US players to Europe is that they're not consistently playing for their clubs. Pulisic is a good example of that - he rarely gets a match for Tommy Tuchel.
That's beer Holder ball, Steve
Could have easily conceded a second there - that's the danger with this Canadian side as the US increasingly get desperate for the equalizer.
I think Mexico might do their customary round of sixteen elimination if they improve like the one WC where they qualified via a playoff vs the Kiwis.
I think it's more tactical naivety . Some of the U.S. players play regularly , but the tactics from Beer Holder are naive at best
It'll depend on the group. El Tri haven't impressed me. Of course, Raul Jimenez hasn't been himself since the head injury.
Aaronson goes down looking for a penalty. it looked a fair challenge and the ref waved play on
SHOOT THE BALL
Aaronson went down in the box there but the ref waved on. Looked soft to me. I thought he might have hit it with his left peg but he wasn't keen on it.
Agreed about El Tri. It will depend upon the group, but I think they haver a better chance of advancing from the group stage the U.S. or Canada
Beer Holder to make a triple substitution. Pepi one of those to come on along with Acosta and Jordan Morris. Sadly, only Pepi might make an impact
Acosta for the injured Tyler Addams. The other two changes yet to be made
Changes now for the US - Morris on for Adams.
That should give the US some additional firepower.
Stupid foul by McKinnie on Richie Lareya just outside e the U.S. box
We should be past fielding a player like Zardes who cannot be counted on to stay forward when he sees an opportunity to run after a ball in the mid.
And Bob's dead right. Puli is in the worst form of his career. Chelsea is a nightmare for him. And our players should be discouraged from playing in the EPL. It's a career killer over and over again.
Pepi for Zardes which should have been done at the half. Jordan Morris for Aaronson will be a loss in quality
Free kick curled well over.
Why take Aaronson off, though - he's been decent, while Pulisic has been dire.
SAVE....US....STILL IN IT
OH!@ Double save by Matt Turner. First was a fumble and the second made up for that. Canadians could have gone two up.
I think if players go to a club like saints or Toon then they should be regulars , but not one of the top clubs like Chelsea.Puli did well with Dortmund. Perhaps the Bundesliga is better for the U.S. players
Geez....great wing play...run the ball out of bounds before crossing
Junior Hoilett on for Kyle Larin
Have them go to Everton!
Canada really parking the bus now.
Fulham is another club. USMNT players have done well there
Why stop that mug from going after Robinson. If he's lost his head, let him do something to get sent off.
ANOTHER USELESS CROSS!!
That's true - the Fulham connection was a good one for American players.
Did Frank fancy Puli at SB?
Arriola for Musa and Reggie Cannon on for Dest. The final rolls of the dice from the Beer Holder were bloody useless.
Cannon and Arriola on now. How many subs are allowed?
TOOTHLESS!!
Ah - Morris misstimed his run there because he got too excited. He might have been in there.
I think Puli did better when Lamps was in charge. Everton might be a good switch for him
Poor cross from Pepi straight to Sweatpants Borjan
Canada time-wasting. This is embarrassing for a home side.
A big disappointment today too is how easy we've made their keeper look good. He's got no pedigree and is nothing much.
High and wide by Pepi off the astroturf bounce
Poor from Pepi there - he might have found Morris in the middle. The ball was on.
Agreed , Steve. Their keeper is a Serb reject who somehow qualified to play for Canada
Not happy at all with the way Beerholder has treated Pepi. Basically put him in the wilderness for two matches only to not start him today, and give him only a minimal amount of time to turn things around.
Artrocious pass from Jordan Morris off a nice break that started with a nice tackle by Chris Richards on Richie LAreya
What's Berhalter's issue with Pepi?
It is so bad
Again....Canada have done nothing!!
Morris knew he couldn't get behind so he plays a crap ball to Pepi to trundle over.
He likes Coke better?
English born Ike Ugbo on for Jonathan David on the final roll of the dice from John Herdman
Get up or get off
Nice one, Dave - well in!
Why try to make the long throw...you can't throw it long
Arriola with a shot blocked off a long throw from McKinnie
ooooh....just wide.... #7 are always good
Oh - nearly a spectacular equalizer from Arriola there. That would have been one for the highlight reels.
OH! Bicycle kick from Arriola inches wide after a cross from McKinnie was headed on by Pepi
