Lakenheath Old Boys

The Friends to the North

Afternoon, chaps - I'm settling in to enjoy the big WC qualifier this afternoon. It's not exactly a must-win for Greg Berhalter's US outfit but a loss would be a real blow in World Cup qualifying. So, I expect them to play it cautiously against a dangerous opponent this afternoon. Come on, you Yanks!

Even if this is being played in a stadium about as impressive as the one at LHS, Canada are no mugs anymore. We'll have to upgrade the performance today.

Afternoon, Steve - I'm into the Paramount Plus site but still trying to find the match on there. They're desperately trying to suggest that I watch some re-runs of Blue Bloods.

I look at the foreign legion for the Canucks and wonder if the US's immigration policy was more humane whether the likes of Larin, David, Davies, and Buchanon would be US players.

Still so ticked off this match isn't available on a TV set in the US!!
It is the top of the table clash

The stadium has a capacity of 24,000 but since it's supposed to be 50% that permits 12,000 supporters. Sure looks a lot more than that

Not sure why the U.S. fell asleep off a poor goal kick. It was headed on at the halfway line then Kyle Larin played a one two with Jonathan David before scoring with just Matt Turner to beat

3:18 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

3:18 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Chris Richards heads wide from the corner from Pulisic . Expected better from the Hoiffenheim player on loan from Bayern

3:19 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Pulisic with a shot blocked by Corey Miller off balance

3:28 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Decent ball there from Aaronson to Pulisic there. I liked that. But he's taking up a position that Raphinha does for Leeds, so that's a non-starter.

3:29 PM

I think one of the announcers is Mo Edu. The other one might be John Strong.

3:36 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Naughty by Corey Miller on Aaronson. Why is he getting away with so many of these challenges

3:37 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

It's about time for Miller to go into the ref's book.

3:37 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - a couple of decent chances for the Canucks but blocked out.

3:39 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

3:39 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Steven Vittoria booked for a foul on a U.S. break after some desperate U.S. defense in their box. Steve will be suspended for the match in El salvador on Wednesday

3:40 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Finally - Vitoria goes into the book for a blatant hack on Pulisic.

3:40 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The only problem with the U.S. is despite doing just about all the attacking the final ball is off. They need to work Captain Sweatpants in the Canadian goal

3:41 PM

3:47 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The Canadians have been more negative than I'd expected. Who's their manager - Gary Megson?

3:49 PM

3:50 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

They said the stadium has a capacity of 24,000 which is a bout a Championship capacity. it reminds me of Selhurst Park in the middle of a neighborhood. Not the same quality

Canada are a national team version of Leicester with whippets up front and attack dogs at the back. And it's working better than the US's Beerholder-ball.

3:54 PM

LOL, Dave. Definite credit to you, but it did make me think of Kiraly once you brought itup. Sorry, Basil

3:55 PM

3:56 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Canada one up at the half despite the U.S. dominating

3:57 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm not convinced that the surface is natural grass? Does FIFA allow qualifiers to be played on astroturf?

3:57 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Half-time: Neither side has looked particularly good this afternoon. The US have dominated against a Canadian side that has sat back for the most part and absorbed pressure. A draw is looking increasingly like a good result for the US today.

4:00 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

All to do in the second half, so typical Beer-holder ball performance. I don't care if Pepi crapped in Greg's Weeties, he simply must be given a go at the expense of Zardes. Zardes is a second half guy, a bod you throw on when we've run their defenders ragged.

Sport Day Central here in ENY

I have the NFL on the TV, WCQ in one window on the computer and another window with England vs Windies in T20 Cricket

4:06 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

There's a real difference when the Canadians get position and push the ball forward to Buchanon and Larin. They started to attack with real purpose. After the goal, the Canadians were happy to defend deep, denying the threat of Dest and Robinson. The US is too deliberate in the buildup, and our passing is not successful enough. All of the passing finds a player who has to make a real effort to control it. Second half started. C'mon USA. Just be better!!!

4:14 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Canada now four points up on the US in second. Mexico play the Ticos later on, which gives them an opportunity to jump over the US into second. Panama play Jamaica. A win there would put them within a point of the US in fourth. This would be a very bad match to lose.

4:14 PM

4:16 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I would have taken off Zardes at the half for Peoi. He's done practically nothing

4:17 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Another yellow card for the Canadians now.

4:17 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Totally agree - who have we got on the bench to replace Zardes?

4:18 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I just read the comment about Lamps being named the new Toffees manager. I think he will flop and a sign as two how far the Toffees have declined that he's the best manager willing to manage there. Could also be due to the fact that not many top managers are currently available at this stage of the season

4:19 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

THAT, from McKennie must stop!

4:19 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Pepi would be my choice to replace Zardes. He's a match winner

4:19 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'd love to see Vitoria off for a second yellow before long.

4:20 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Why would Puli cross that ball...he's inside the box...stops turns....passes it outside the box

They do know the goal is inside that box?

4:22 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Same combo as for the goal win a Canadian break off a U.S. corner. Jonathan David on a run and found Kyle Larin, but fortunately his pass in to the box didn't't find anyone. A horrible lack of commitment in the U.S. challenges

4:22 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Useless attempt of a dribble by Dest

4:23 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Puli is struggling with form. He's just not enjoying his football and under too much pressure to be the US talisman.

4:23 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

How are Canada on top of the group?!?!?!

4:23 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

More uselessness by the Chelsea man

4:24 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

and again

4:24 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Really poor outing for Pulisic today.

4:24 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Yet another atrocious cross from Pulisic. This time win a U.S. break. Then easily tackled on the next possession

4:24 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

A player in form, doesn't just pick up the ball and waste it like that. Puli just can't get it done.

4:25 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I was thinking the same thing, Dave. I just don't think any of the CONCACAF teams are that good this time around.

4:25 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Puli shown the bye-line by some Canadian hump. And then he lost the ball.

4:26 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Shame that Timothy Weah is out for Covid today - he was the bright spark the other night.

4:26 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Liam Fraser on for Marc Anthony Danny Kaye

4:26 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Kaye is replaced by Fraser for the Canucks.

4:27 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed about Tim Weah. Also agreed that CONCACAF just doesn't have good teams this time around. I didn't expect any of them to do well this time around

4:27 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Decent effort there from McKennie and Aaronson but Sweatpants smothered it.

4:28 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

You guys would know better than me

What is wrong with the US?

They have a few players playing at top European teams
They have a well established home league

Why do they stink?

4:28 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Sweatpants Biorjan with a comfortable save from Aaronson

4:28 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I can't see any of these CONCACAF teams getting out of the group stage.

4:29 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The U.S. has the players but they're horribly run. USSF is a shambles and they have horrible managers

4:29 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Tactical naivitee for one.

4:29 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Dangerous break from the U.S. but well wide by Tejan Buchanan.

4:29 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Steve and I were chatting about this the other night. I think the problem with the strategy of getting as many US players to Europe is that they're not consistently playing for their clubs. Pulisic is a good example of that - he rarely gets a match for Tommy Tuchel.

4:30 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That's beer Holder ball, Steve

4:30 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Could have easily conceded a second there - that's the danger with this Canadian side as the US increasingly get desperate for the equalizer.

4:31 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think Mexico might do their customary round of sixteen elimination if they improve like the one WC where they qualified via a playoff vs the Kiwis.

4:31 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think it's more tactical naivety . Some of the U.S. players play regularly , but the tactics from Beer Holder are naive at best

4:32 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

It'll depend on the group. El Tri haven't impressed me. Of course, Raul Jimenez hasn't been himself since the head injury.

4:32 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Aaronson goes down looking for a penalty. it looked a fair challenge and the ref waved play on

4:33 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

SHOOT THE BALL

4:33 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Aaronson went down in the box there but the ref waved on. Looked soft to me. I thought he might have hit it with his left peg but he wasn't keen on it.

4:33 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed about El Tri. It will depend upon the group, but I think they haver a better chance of advancing from the group stage the U.S. or Canada

4:34 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Beer Holder to make a triple substitution. Pepi one of those to come on along with Acosta and Jordan Morris. Sadly, only Pepi might make an impact

4:35 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Acosta for the injured Tyler Addams. The other two changes yet to be made

4:36 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Changes now for the US - Morris on for Adams.

4:36 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That should give the US some additional firepower.

4:36 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Stupid foul by McKinnie on Richie Lareya just outside e the U.S. box

4:36 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

We should be past fielding a player like Zardes who cannot be counted on to stay forward when he sees an opportunity to run after a ball in the mid.

And Bob's dead right. Puli is in the worst form of his career. Chelsea is a nightmare for him. And our players should be discouraged from playing in the EPL. It's a career killer over and over again.

4:37 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Pepi for Zardes which should have been done at the half. Jordan Morris for Aaronson will be a loss in quality

4:37 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Free kick curled well over.

4:37 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Why take Aaronson off, though - he's been decent, while Pulisic has been dire.

4:38 PM

SAVE....US....STILL IN IT

4:38 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH!@ Double save by Matt Turner. First was a fumble and the second made up for that. Canadians could have gone two up.

4:38 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think if players go to a club like saints or Toon then they should be regulars , but not one of the top clubs like Chelsea.Puli did well with Dortmund. Perhaps the Bundesliga is better for the U.S. players

4:45 PM

4:46 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Canada time-wasting. This is embarrassing for a home side.

4:47 PM

A big disappointment today too is how easy we've made their keeper look good. He's got no pedigree and is nothing much.

4:47 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

High and wide by Pepi off the astroturf bounce

4:48 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Poor from Pepi there - he might have found Morris in the middle. The ball was on.

4:49 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed , Steve. Their keeper is a Serb reject who somehow qualified to play for Canada

4:49 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Not happy at all with the way Beerholder has treated Pepi. Basically put him in the wilderness for two matches only to not start him today, and give him only a minimal amount of time to turn things around.
