The Magic of the Cup Continues
Morning, boys! It's FA Cup 4th Round Saturday ahead of us today. I"m starting with the magical atmosphere of lower league Kidderminster v. West Ham. At the same time, Chelsea will be hosting Plymouth of L2. Later on, we've got the mouth-watering match-up of table topping Man City against top of the Championship Fulham. At 12:30 there is the East Anglian Derby between Cambridge and Luton. And finally at 3pm, there is the all-Premier League clash between Spurs and Brighton. Along with that, at 1pm, there is Premier League relegation dogfight between Watford and Burnley.
Join me for all the magic this morning.

The big news of this morning is that Thomas Tuchel has come down with a case of Covid and won't be on the bench at Stamford Bridge.
West Ham get us started wearing a light blue away kit this morning.
Kidderminster are in the sixth level of English football and have already beaten eight sides to get to this stage.
Good Morning, Bob. Here to join you for the Fourth Round matches. Thanks for getting us started
Sorry to hear about Tommy T getting CDOVID. Based on the pre-match reports about players complaining that he's too demanding tells me that the players may be glad to get a break from him
The Hammers have started on the front foot but the Kidderminster faithful are cheering every kick.
These two teams met in the Cup in 1987 whenKidderminster made it to the Fifth Round. Hammers won that match 0-1 on this pitch
Morning, David - great to have you on board for another Cup weekend.
We fortunately didn't get any more snow last night, so I won't have to shovel this morning.
As you stated Harriers have played quite a few cup matches while the Hammers only platting their second of the season
No snow for us this , but one of the distant mountains has snow near the top. That's how we like it
Thanks, Bob. Glad to join you on chilly morning
Yes, and this would have been the fixture my beloved Leeds would have played in today, had we managed to knock out WH in the last one. I'm not sure that Bielsa would have fancied it given our approach toward Crawley Town last year.
OH! Austin forces a save from Arriola from the D after a long ball failed to be cleared
Leeds hasn't has the best of luck away to lower level opposition in the Cup over the years , so perhaps they're better off not playing here
Well then, Plymouth have taken an early lead against Chelsea.
Champ just stated that Argyle took a shock lead at SB
Another chance for Harriers and it's straight to Arriola from just outside the box
Then the hammers win a corner
We've never been the best of Cup teams. Even during the Revie years when we were in several finals, we only won just the one time - in 1972 against the Arsenal.
Short corner routine from Mark Nobel results in Noble winning another corner
Steadfast defense from the Harriers as Behrahma tries to find Yarmolenko.
That corner from Nobel was not exactly Nobel Prize quality. right mate?
Agreed, Bob. Lost top Colchester in 1971, Black Cats , 1973, and Bristol City at ER in 1974. You must have really enjoyed that win in 1972
Do you think Tommy Tuchel is watching the match at home wearing an Argyle Sweater?
I'm confused by Double T's comment about Apple TV. As far as I know, if you're watching on your telly, you need to have either an Apple TV or a Roku device in order to watch ESPN+ at all. And I've never known how anyone could watch more than one game on the telly on ESPN+. You need to have one on the laptop and one on the telly, right?
The pitch is in better condition than I thought and the stadium is bigger than I thought . They did spend five seasons in L2 from 2000-2005. I've seen worse pitches and smaller stadiums
Kidderminister must be pleased with how the first 15 minutes have gone. They've kept their shape and are in this one.
I'm only watching on the telly with ROKU TV and I can only watch one match . I could watch the match from SB on the computer but it would be tough to blog
Champ says Sir Geoff Hurst its 80. He looks really well for his age
Where in the country is Kidderminster - do you know?
Dioup with a clumsy late challenge on Morgan Smith
He does indeed - he's lived a charmed life since winning the World Cup. I'm sure he's celebrated everywhere he goes.
Yes! Kidderminster take the lead through a free kick that was swung in, Arriola bobbled it and Penny stuffed it in!
1-0 Harriers!
Hi guys....I join as Kidderminster take the lead!!!
Actually Arriola came for it and was blocked by Diop and didn't get there at all. What a moment for the non-leaguers!
GOAL ! ALEX "TOM " PETTY GIVES HARRIERS THE LEAD. ARRIOLA WITH A JOKLE OF A PUNCH STRAIGHT DOWN TO THE GROUND AND PETTY SMASHED IN A FROM A FEW YARDS OUT
Yeah - Bielsa would want nothing to do with this match. The Harriers look well up for it.
Good Morning , Dave. Perfect timing and giant killers win progress in both matches if the scores hold
Morning, Dave - welcome! Good timing on your part. It's looking like a magic of the Cup kind of morning with both Plymouth and now Kidderminster in the lead.
The home fans having a lot of fun with the "Who are you?" chants now.
To answer your question, Bob, Kidderminster is in worcestershire near the borders of Stafford shire and Shropshire. Hope that helps
Yappin' TT already bugging me. He was talking about the bad pitch
I actually think it looks quite good. I was hoping for a dirt patch
I don't think Davie Moyes will be putting Worcestershire sauce on his steak if the Hammers are dumped out here. What do you think?
BTW, Kidderminster is 17 miles south-west of Birmingham
I had commented earlier that the pitch is in better condition than I expected and the stadium bigger than I expected,. They played five seasons in L2 and I would rate their facilities at that level. No excuses for the Hammers
There is a busy week of Premier League action ahead of us, with several games every afternoon. I believe that you lot play away to Burnley on Thursday. We'll need some help from you for that one.
Hemmings fouled byt Diouop just outside the D. He conceded the foul for the goal
Thanks for the geography tip, Dave - I was wondering.
OH! Free kick from Amari Sterling curled just wide. No wonder why he starts for St. Kitts & Nevis, LOL!
I agree - this is a decent ground for non-leaguers who were only formed in the 80s. Must be some money behind it.
TT is so full of crap
"on a field like this it is hard to get the technique right or a free kick"
THE BALL IS STANDING STILL!!!
Thanks for the info,Dave. I was thinking more that they would be midway between Bristol and Birmingham. Didn't realize they were that close to Birmingham.
I don't even think that the Cock are showing the Burnley Watford match today!
Am I wrong?
Bloody Olympics
I keep telling my American sports fan friends how much fun they'd have if there were a competition where, say, the Bills would have to play some sem-pro side, but I honestly don't know if the infrastructure even exists. Are there semi-pro American football teams or is it just college and NFL?
Bib, I think they were formed in the 1880s, LOL!I also think they have played at this ground in their entire history
What score do want in that one, Bob?
I don't think it is - scandalous. Becky Lowe should be ashamed.
I think you're right Dave. Elizabeth and I watched the opening g ceremony and I thought it was really mediocre
That definitely needs to be a draw for us. Anytime two of the relegation threatened sides play, a point each for them is the best result.
I'm boycotting the Winter Games due to the US government diplomatic boycott. Don't want to give the murderous Chinese regime any help.
Hammers don't have a lot of joy in this part of the country. Lost to the Shrews in this Round a few years ago in Moyes first spell in charge of the Hammers and I think lost in a replay to then Hereford United in the 1970s. I bet Hereford's pitch was in worse condition than this one
That's a good point, Bob. Definitely not
Walt texted me that he watched the Olympics for an hour and they showed no sport! All the soppy story crap!
I hate that!
I have always complained how the Olympics is shown over here. In England, whenever the sport was...it was shown live. Here, they show almost no live sport. Everything is tape delay
TT is really annoying me. He keeps complaining about the pitch and the stadium. Top flight facilities were indorse condition in the 70s and 80s. He's a spoiled, pampered, baby
West Ham just haven't got going at all in this one. Moyesy will have to sort them out at half time.
Last night TT couldn't say Middlesbrough correctly last night. Now he is butchering West Ham...he puts the emphasis on the wrong word...just like he does for the World Cup
Don't emphasis the first word!
Agreed. Moyesey will have an interesting talk at the half
That drives me crazy, too, Dave. Whenever I watch the Olympics back here, they're always doing these feature stories about how one of the athlete's cousins has just recovered from testicular cancer or something. Honestly!
TT in typically awful form today. Won't shut up about the stadium and pitch which are ion decent enough condition to where the Hammers have not excuses. Also said it's okay for the Hammers not to be up for the match. Pl.ayers need to be up for ALL matches
LOL, BOB! I wouldn't havethe balls to air that story. Point well made.
If you're looking for linguistic purity, you'll need to call in Derek Rae. He'd have put in Ph.D. level research on the Eastender dialect ahead of this one.
I swear TT was go on about how there is not an equal playing field with VAR
Of course, the matches started at Mildenhall FC and Lakenheath FC last summer.. they dont' have VAR
TT says U.S footie would increase if these types of matches were played. They do and it's called the U.S. Open Cup. I think promotion and relegation wold do more to expand the game in this country
I suppose NBC isn't confident that big audiences are going to show to watch sporting competitions that they wouldn't otherwise give a toss about, like the Luge or Bobsledding unless they make it into some human interest story.
Agreed about relegation
Let's BAR VAR !
Surely Double T played in the US Open Cup at some point with the Revs. What's he talking about?
If you miss any events I guess you could watch on the Cock. I'm sure none of you wanted to hear that
Quality Harriers corner headed wide at the far post
I agree, David - but the owners are terrified that the fan base wouldn't go with the team if they were relegated and suddenly weren't on the telly and were playing A League sides. But it's worth a shot.
Azpi ties it up with a back heeled equalizer for Chelsea
That's a shame - it would have been fun to have a giantkilling morning.
That's a good point, Bob. I think it's more that the ownership in this country don't want to take a risk, but you maker as really good point
I love to watch all those things if it is live!
I remember during the LA Olympics in 84. I was home from college and the BBC coverage would come on the air around 11. They would have some people talking in the studio and then go off to the swimming pool or stadium and stay there for everything!
After one race in the pool ended, there was a medal ceremony and then another race
That's what I loved. It was an event that you felt like you were there
Classic caught in a pickle off a solo run as he wins a free kick
Not exactly a Nobel Prize winning free kick from a Nobleman named Mark who was well off the mark
Such a shame about Chelsea.. I would have loved them being knocked out
I love to watch that Bradord match sometimes
Long range shot from Bernhrama high and wide. A minute of stoppage time
That was quite a comeback from Bradford at SB. I think Chelsea won the Prem that season
Kidderminster one up at the half as we have a giant killing on out hands
It's 1-1 at the half at SB.
The Kiddies take the lead
They had a good run in the 94 Cup
I remember the Final Build up featuring them
Half-time at Kidderminister - the non-leaguers march in 1-0 up. Quite a turnup. I'm off to grab another cuppa.
A Penny for Moyes's thoughts after Alex Penny gave Harriers the lead
You can't use that pun...Jon C already used it
No reason Plymouth shouldn't be wearing Green
Geez...they just showed some highlights from SB...they didn't show the Chelsea goal!!
After last night's match, went out with the boys to work on the driveway....the WORST ever to clear! Able to take off a few inches but there is at least two inches of snow/ice that you can't get clear!
Back we are at Kiddie for the second half
YIKES! Be careful. Those sound like dangerous conditions in ENY. Be safe!
I hate how all the talk of Premier League Era
There was history before the Prem
off we go
Did Champ use the triple pun I used at 8:15? I'm guessing no
Second half underway from Aggborough
The second half is starting up and Moyesy has turned to his skipper Declan Rice and old hand Craig Dawson to turn things around.
Cross from Penny out of play. Out by more than a penney
That goal from Alex Penney showed the Hammers have been playing with less quality than JC Penney's . I bet Champ hasn't used that one
I feel for you, Dave - I had a marathon shoveling session yesterday morning after the plows had come through Thursday night and let a bank of salt and ice.
Both changes from Moyes both like for like tactically but an improvement in terms of leadership.
I have never seen this layer before on the driveway!
I'll be going out there a little later with a metal shovel...that might help
Fortunately just a couple of distant mountains with a light dusting at the tops. I sympathize with you two.
Just be careful. It's very slippery in those conditions.
You've had so much more snow than us...I shouldn't be complaining
I disagree with Craig Burley that some starters are getting a rest. They just got a off a two week break. The europeans didn't have any matches. How much more rest do they need?
The Kidderminster faithful want a penalty there but the ref waves on.
Yeah - we've had 65 inches since we got back January 1st. We usually get around 100 inches a season but it's typically spread out a bit more starting in November and carrying on through to the end of March or even early April.
SAY WEST HAM CORRECTLY!!!!!
OH! Close ranger shot from Benhrama blocked then Harriers hoof it away. Nice passing from Bowen and Rice
We're nowhere close to that but more than any season we had in Texas.
We really haven't had any huge storms at all
I wonder what our total is so far
Arriola misses the curling corner and Matt Preston heads over at the far post
Melanie is student teaching this semester. Classes were cancelled yesterday and Thursday due to potential icing on the roads. They're never prepared for that type of weather in Texas
Robert Plant in then stands . He's definitely part of history
Ben Johnson wins a corner off the goal scorer
Robert Plant is a legend!
Corner from Benhrama head away.Hammers keep possession
After Alex Penney scored a penney for Johnno's thoughts
Nice save
Shot from Bowen saved by he keeper and the post then the rebound from Bowen blocked for a corner after Harriers were caught in possession
Is anyone watching the Bridge match?
If so, is it all Chelsea
Corner out for another. Headed away but the Hammers have a sustained spell of possession
Then Luke Simpson turns around a swerving shot. Morgan Smith down off a foul from Craig Dawson, but back up
Soiucek for Mark Noble and Aaron Cresswell for Ben Johnson. Both like for like but a stronger lineup
I'm watching only the match from Aggborough
Moyes with one substitution remaining
I haven't been watching it, mate. I can only manage just the one at a time and I thought this one had a bit more romance.
Has either side had a shot on goal in this half? The Hammers just can't be bothered.
Champ correct that Spurts won the Cup in 1901 as a non league side , but they were a third tier side, not a fifth or sixth tier side like Harriers
They just mentioned the 94 Cup run. I knew I remembered them
I had that Cup Final build recorded for me by my sister. I think I still have the full 6 hour build up tape somewhere!
Luke Simpson in the Harriers just made two great saves a few minutes ago
Back when Cup Final Day meant something
Champ said that if Harriers win they would be the first side to make the Fifth Round twice as a non league. Not sure ion anyone mentioned that
Champ said Harriers one of nine non league sides to make the Fifth Round. Wonder ion anyone can name the other eight. I know of two
I always wondered about the 6th Tiers of the pyramid. It is North and South. I wondered how they dealt with the geography when a team is relegated or promoted... who knows where they come from
I read that when the new teams join they have to switch teams from divisions to even it up
Is Wimbledon one?
Didn't they mention Lincoln from a few years back?
Sutton?
Good point, Dave. I saw on Wikipedia that there are some border counties that are used to even it out. It was a a color coded map.
Wow - that is pretty convoluted.
I am just going to throw out teams from my memory
Blyth Spartans?
Champ didn't mention any teams. I think Weimblwedon made only as far as the Fourth Round as a non league side. I know Lincoln and Sutton are correct
Well done, Dave . I weals thinking about Blyth Spartans who were jobbed by the ref in the Fifth Round when playing Wrexham at SJP in 1978
I thought he mentioned it
I think Telford United in the mid 1980s and lost 0-1 to a then top Toffees side
Is there any level beyond the sixth one? Or is it just pub sides beyond that point?
He mentioernd there were nine teams but other than Harriers I don't remember him mentioning any specific teams
There are lots of levels.I guess the line between pubs sides and not is rather subjective.
Well, you have to work out the leagues if it is geographical
You can't have Portsmouth be relegated and take the place of promoted Carlisle and put them in the Northern division
Isn't there the Isthmas League or something like that
I haven't decided which match to watch at 10. I know they're promoting Citeh vs Cottagers, but I'm thinking of watching Palace vs Hartlepool
Kath just told me that the weather is supposed to be above freezing this upcoming week....I guess I'll let the driveway clear itself
The final roll of the dice from Moyes as Pablo Fornals Pickled on for Vlasic as the Hammers are caught in a pickle
Devante Redmond on for HArriers . Came up through the United academy the same time as Rash. Their careers are have gone in opposite directions
Just looked it up... 8 tiers followed by many division at the 9th and 10th levels
Yeah - we're supposed to get a warm up. If it's warmer, I may go out later this afternoon and clean up a bit.
The footie infrastructure in the UK is incredible.
Svent level is Isthmian Premier , Northern Premier League and there is the Southern Premier South and Central divisions at the seventh tier
1 PL
2 Ch
3 L1
4 L2
5 NL
6 NLN/NLS
7 North PL/Souther L Cent/South IsthmainP
8 7 leaves make up this tier
Agreed, Bob, and Dave. Then many more tiers below the ninth and tenth tiers
Awful dive by Yarma
Under 10 to go... a bigwig is losing...lots of added time?
Warm up for us doesn't start until Monday
Wish United would do that....INTO THE MIXER!
Arriola struggles to punch away the curling corner from Sterling, the St. Kitts & Nevis international.
I will be delighted for both of you when you have a warm up. Hopefully,a thaw doesn't lead to flooding, but tractor easier roads to drive on
Still 1-1 in the 86th minute
I just checked . There are fourteen ninth tier divisions and many more in the lower tiers. I'm stopping at level nine
Robert Plant has changed his seat with his wife
Thought he would stay in his lucky seat
Great research, Dave!
HE KEEP SAYING WEST HAM WRONG....SOMEONE TELL HIM!
Harriers free kick headed over from Preston. Matt , not where Moyes formerly played and managed
As I remember, the Led Zep guys are Brummies. Or maybe that was Sabbath.
Struth..how did that stay out
I think both Bob
OH! Missed sitter from Benhrama . Tamely hit close range shot off a Harriers p[layer and in to the grateful arms of Luke Simpson
My breakfast has just arrived at my shoulder - English muffin with some cheddar on it, eggs and banana.
I agree with Dave. I think both are Brummies. Ozzie Osbourne for sure and Robert Plant too
WOW! Great breakfast, Bob.
Both Daves with great research on the Footie Pyramid.
Added time at SB
So far , Prtem teams winless in the fourth Round against teams from the second, third ,and sixth tiers
Finally the Kidderminster crowd is making some noise as we approach stoppage time. They stopped singing for a long time.
United's loss was nothing then!
3 added minutes
AN LOB blogging trio of stoppage time minutes and desperate defending from Harriers
BUGGER DECLAN RICE TIES IT UP IN STOPPAGE TIME
Bugger... Rice saved the Hammers
Bugger! Declan Rice bursts through and stuffs it in the top of the net. 1-1!
I guess ET here too.
Name on the trophy!
I thought West Ham were going to win the League Cup after beating both Manc clubs but then lost to Spurs
How were they "flatfooted"
It was a spell of Hammers pressure and Mark Bowen passed to Rioce and credit to him as he went past two defenders then scored with a great finish in the roof of the net
ET at SB
Kate was not keen on that Declan Rice goal celebration with the Michael Jackson-inspired crotch thrust. It put her right off her brekkies.
