Nations League Friday!

Who's up for some meaningless Nations League friendlies on a Friday afternoon? There's no coverage of the big one between England and Italy, but FS1 has coverage of the Germany v. Hungary match from 2:45pm onward. I'll be around and about monitoring the matches on Five Live and The Guardian blog. Join me if you're starved of footie action.

Both teams are coming off the back of a hiding – England defeated 4-0 by Hungary, Italy spanked 5-2 in Germany – so there are plenty of changes. Gareth Southgate makes six, with Eric Dier picking up his first cap since November 2020, Harry Maguire returning despite not starting any of Manchester United’s last four Premier League matches, Nick Pope standing in for the injured Jordan Pickford, and Declan Rice, Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden also starting. Roberto Mancini makes seven changes, with Chelsea midfielder Jorginho returning, and West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca taking the place of the injured Ciro Immobile.

2:53 PM

I read the other day that Reece James is the best right back but TAA should start vs Iran because they will sit back and TAA would be a better crosser of the ball and creator of chances

Good Afternoon, Bob

I'd prefer to see Germany win - I hate the Hungarian regime under Viktor Orban.

3:05 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

If these results hold then the Magyars will have clinched the Group. Will they qualify for the four team tournament?

3:06 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

If it stays that way...Hungary could win the group vs German, Italy and England!! Everyone thought they were the whipping boys of the group

3:06 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That match played in Leipzig . Several of the Magyar players play for Leipzig

3:07 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I sure favored the Magyars to be relegated. The Three Lions now favorites for that

3:08 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Group winners in all four levels of the NL qualify for the Euro's playoff round if needed
That would really help Hungary

3:11 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Two internationals in Germany today
That doesn't happen often outside of tournament football

3:11 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I know that there's a four team tournament for the four League A winners . Is that tournament still going to be played?

Come on England
Come on England

3:13 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, Dave. US plays in Spain on Tuesday while Spain will be playing in neighboring Portugal that day

3:13 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Must win for England on Tuesday of these results hold. I think England avoid relegation Tuesday if these results hold and they win on Tuesday since head to head is the first tiebreaker

3:15 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

This and the Germany matches are the last two before the WC

Teams won't get any time together before it starts

3:15 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I don't like that arrangement . I wonder of that weill affect the quality of the WC tournament

James has failed to make the cross more times than not

That's why I think TAA should play against Iran

Hopefully defending will be at a minimum for that match

Italy have done nowt - they're rubbish. You're at home, for goodness sake!

3:29 PM

I think all three of England's opens in the group will be playing defensively. I would be surprised if I'm wrong about that

3:30 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

From what I'm hearing both team this match are playing poorly. Italy showing why they failed to qualify for the WC

Second halves underway from Milan and Leipzig

3:49 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The announcer says that a pass was from the first half play book. Straight out of play

3:49 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Dier clear in the nick of time as Cristante just failed to connect to give Italy the lead then skipper, Bonucci booked for a foul on Sterling just outside the Italian box

3:51 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Free kick from Reese James well over.

3:52 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Shot from Harry Kane blocked by Bonucci for an England corner

3:53 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

England nearly took the lead Rodrigo Tolloi nearly scored an OG . Went out for a corner a foot wide of the goal

4:04 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Germany nearly tied it up. Long range shot went off the side netting beating the keeper.

4:04 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

BUGGER! ITALY TAKE THE LEAD. RASPRADORI WITH THE GOAL

4:11 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Nice finish off a long ball from Bonucci . Poor defending by Kyle Walker.

4:12 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

As things stand the Three Lions will be relegated at the end of this match

4:14 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Jack Grealish on for Saka and Luke Shaw in for a Walker named Kyle as Southgate makes a double substitution.

4:15 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

As things stand the Magyars will win the group and the Three lions will be relegated tonight. That would make the match at wembley on Monday basically meaningless.

4:18 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Half a dozen stoppage time minutes in Milan. A quintet in Leipzig

4:35 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Jack Grealish has talked himself into the book. Will be suspended for the match on Monday vs Germany. Rudiger also suspended for that match

4:37 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Hay Jude ! Bellingham with a free header from seven yards out well over and that may do it.

4:39 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It's over in Leipzig. Magyars win 0-1 and have won the group.

4:40 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It's over in Milan and Italy win 1-0. England have been relegated and will be a second seed in Euro qualifying.

4:41 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That's it for me. Look forward to chatting on Monday.

CHEERS!
