Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Yes, we have a few more Carling Cup, Second Round fixtures to attend to this afternoon, plus the tasty Premiership encounter between Liverpool and Newcastle. 'Pool could really be in trouble if they don't get a result tonight. Here are the Carling fixtures:

Chesterfield v Man City

Doncaster v Derby

Fulham v Wycombe

Middlesbrough v Notts County

Scunthorpe v Aston Villa

Five Live are doing the Liverpool vs. Newcastle match, which no doubt will pop off at the kick-off, but Five Live Special are focusing on the Carling Cup, with live commentary from the Scunthorpe vs. Villa match.

Plenty of Premiership scalps on offer for the lower league sides today. I reckon Villa should be alright given their recent form, but Citeh, Boro and Fulham could well come acropper as Wigan did yesterday, especially if they run out the B teams.

Villa seem to be running out the A team, which is just as well since Sorenson has just pulled off a double save in the opening minutes. Petrov and Angel up front.

Doncaster Rovers already one up at Derby.

Just as I'd predicted, a makeshift Fulham side has just given up a goal to Wycombe. Serves them right. Bloody hell, what else to they have to play for - a Champions' League spot? Don't make me laugh!

Liverpool - Newcastle have just kicked off. I notice that Rafa Benitez has learned very little from Liverpool's recent poor form, as he's sticking with the miserable Kuyt-Bellamy front pairing. Poor Crouchie is languishing on the bench again. What does the lad have to do? Also the calamitous Reina is in goal rather than Dudek.

Meanwhile Newcastle have a dangerous looking side with plenty of pace from Martins, Duff, Ameobi and Millner.

Hey mate, sorry I was distracted by my statistics homework for a moment. Good to have you on board.

Blackwell: well, he had to go didn't he. Second bottom is just not good enough for a club like Leeds. Who's next? Hard to say. I know that Curbishley's name has come up, but he's been in the line for just about every open job, including WBA.

Ooh, Angel just hit the crossbar for Villa!

Yeah, I'm listening to the Villa game now. Derby are now 2-0 down and heading for an early Carling exit. Blimey, it's a long way from the glory days of the Baseball Ground in the 70s with players like Dave McKay and Colin Bell.

Curbs has said no to WBA...did he know this job was available?
Villa hit the post again

Yeah, I think Alan thinks he's too good for the Coke. He is mistaken.

Colin Bell?????
He was the Citeh player!! Who do you really mean?

3:31 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, he played for Citeh as well as Derby. I'm almost sure that they were both in that side that won the Championship circa 1975. I'll check it you bastard.

Penalty for Villa. Angel to take.....

It's saved but Angel taps in the rebound. Villa 1-0.

Did Liverpool keep the same side from the weekend?
If so, it is the first time in 90 + games.
Penalty saved but the rebound is put in

It looks pretty close to the side that lost to Chelski to me with Bellamy and Kuyt up front, Sissoko in the holding role and so on.

Bugger... Liverpool just scored

You're absolutely right - I was thinking of Bruce Rioch. I've also just seen that Frannie Lee and Charlie George were in that side managed by Cloughie. In any case, it's a bloody long way from that heyday to get thumped by Doncaster Rovers in the Second Round of the Carling Cup. I suppose you could say the same thing about Leeds, but at least we won our match, eh?

Good point

Shame that Citeh and Boro are in the lead. At this stage I always like to see the big clubs knocked out - it obviously reduces the chance of getting a nasty draw with a Premiership club.

Woo hoo, at least Fulham seem to be going out.

Colin Bell? Boro winning?

Yeah, this stats. class is doing my head in. You know I was never any good at math.

I remind you: how much are you (or anyone else happening to read this) paying for this blog service. Yes, I thought so. If you want accuracy, turn to the Beebs.

Btw, any thoughts on the bung story?

3:46 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Another good point.

I am not sure about the Bung story. I haven't read a lot of it. I am surprised that Skysports haven't made much of it on FSC. I am sure it goes on a lot. It is the agents that make it so murky.

3:49 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, it seems as if the agents are the one's mainly at fault and I suspect that Allardyce, Redknapp and co. will escape the FA's charges, while the dirty agents will lose their licenses.

Gooner reckons that this investigation is why Big Sam didn't get the England job - what do you reckon?

Wow, I come back from my game and Boro, Fulham and Citeh all fall in the Carling Cup!!!
Shame Liverpool beat the Toon.
Alonzo scored from 65 yards out. He lobbed the keeper. Last year he scored from his own half against Luton in the FA Cup when the keeper had come up for a corner.
Some guy put a bet that he would score from his own half during last season. HE WON LOTS OF MONE!!!
I wonder if decided to do it again this season.

Just got back from UF and to my delight there are now three more Premiership sides out of the Carling Cup, adding to Wigan yesterday. Lovely. Yet, Villa seem a real threat in this competition. They don't really have a shot at challenging for the Premiership title, but they could easily put in a good run in the Carling if they continue to take it seriously as they did today. We'll see what comes out of the draw. Is it tomorrow? Friday?

Trev, you're probably right about Roy McFarland, but it strikes me that he doesn't look a lot like Colin Bell. Ah well, my mind is now totally fried on the stats.
