Hope Solo Controversy
The controversy of the decision to drop Hope Solo for the Women's World Cup semi final match with Brazil last week continues to run and run. I reckon that the decision was barmy given Solo's record but that her decision to call out her fellow team-mate Brianna Scurry and her coach was right out of order. I wouldn't play her again. Gator B . . . you baiter, you. . . you know my position on this one . . . Nike should've chopped Ryan's head off before the consolation match . . .it was absolutely the DUMBEST coaching move EVER . . . bar none . . . Brianna hadn't played in ages . . . neither of the first two goals go in with Solo in the nets . . . a simple timely call by Brianna would've kept the defender away from an ill-conceived header on the first goal . . .Solo would've been better served by keeping quiet, but, in my eyes, this was the equivalent of Ryan sitting down Abby because he had a "gut" feeling she wasn't going to score against Brazil.
Agreed. The one position that you don't mess with when things are going well is at keeper. I don't know enough about the players that are around in that position but Brianna is well past it and keeping faith with Solo was the right choice.
Ryan should feel the ax for that move because clearly he bottled it at a moment where the US were poised to get to a final, the only fitting tribute to Lilly's tireless service.
Solo shouldn't have said those things to a camera, but really, she's right. Scurry made a hash of those goals and in my mind was always the weak link in every womens 11 she played in. Solo's not likely to be the favorite in the dressing room, but Ollie Kahn had a great career made up of blasting anyone who displeased him to anybody he cared to.
Because she's a girl, she's not gender disqualified to be a bit of an asshole?
Bottom line, pick the best 11.
Agree with both comments. Ryan should get the axe for several terrible decisions during the WC. But would you be keen to play alongside someone who had thrown another player and her coach under the bus in public? I wouldn't. Keep it in the dressing room, Hope.
Absolutely she should have addressed those sentiments to Ryan and Scurry themselves rather than through the media. But as long as she's the best keeper available for selection, I'd play with her. I know Abby's said that she doesn't want to play with Solo again, but ask her again after Scurry's or another inferior-to-Solo's next howler dumps the US out of competition early.
I certainly would prefer Solo over the serial error prone midget Brianna Scurry. Again, Scurry's been the weakest link in every national team that she's been in. The irony that she's so bad when on the men's side we're spoiled for choice has crossed my mind many times. Probably hers too, but she just flapped at it as it came over.
Ryan, he just was never going to be good enough. Tactically, he blew the first game against, Korea(?). And finally after he'd arrived at the best 11 to go forward, he starts tinkering? He's gotta go.
Yeah, Ryan's got to go and no doubt Scurry will retire after all of this fuss. It'll be a bit of a clear out with Kristine Lilly retiring as well, so the remaining pieces of the '99 winning side will all be gone.
Still, even with a new coach, would you want to be in the locker room with another player who's going to call to out on ESPN when you miss a header? I wouldn't.
