Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Saturday Pick-Me-Up

I'm feeling a wee bit under the weather this morning, but a full slate of the footer should be just what the doctor ordered. Avram Grant has promised to stick five up front in order to emulate Ossie Ardiles's Spurs team of the 90s. With Fulham both scoring and leaking goal, it should be a real shoot-out. That's followed by ManYoo, still smarting from that League Cup exit, at St. Andrew's. And, of course, I'll have a keen eye on my Leeds boys, trying to make it eight out of eight today. Join me?

Citeh has maintained its terrific start under Sven by tonking Newcastle 3-1 this morning. They're now joint top with the Arse - who take on the Hammers today - on sixteen points.

Will wonders never cease?! Rafa Benitez has decided to keep Torres in the side after his mid-week exertions against Luton where he scored a hat-trick. Stevie G.'s also in the side. Maybe Pool will get back to their early season form today.

The battle of the rock bottoms between Bolton vs. Derby should definitely answer the question - who's the worst defender in the Prem? My money's on Dean Leecock.

Hey, Gator B, sorry you are under the weather . . .I'm off to coach Cal and then Maggie, so I'll be a no show today . . . but I'm still seething about Greg Ryan's decision to bench Hope Solo for the semi-final. He had a hunch Scurry would be a better choice because the way Brazil shot the ball required a keeper with quicker reaction saves. Huh? You have the best keeper in the world, who has been your no. 1 for 18 months and you want to play a hunch in the semi-final of the WC? Typical of coaches who are frustrated former players who want the game to still be about them, instead of the players. DUMB, DUMB, DUMB

Hull City have bounced back from that mid-week hammering by Chelski in the Carling Cup by thrashing Ipswich 3-1. Sorry Blubber.

I hear you on the U.S. Women's team, but didn't you think that it was out of order for Hope to call out Brianna Scurry in that public way?

Good luck to your kids today!

Hey, I am back from Rec Soccer.

How do Chelsea look??

Leeds just took the lead!!!

The Arse are winning at Upton Park.
They haven't won there in years

Hey Dave, I just got off the phone with the Gooner. Yes, we're one up through Seb Carole - his fourth of the season.

This has been a decent game - very end to end. Chelski are indeed playing five up front and Fulham aren't shy about attacking either. Ben Haim was extremely lucky not to concede a penalty - look at it at half time. Definite hand ball.

Blogger United We Stand said...

Keller is playing?
Nemi, where is he?

Anelka has just equalized for Bolton against bottom of the league Derby. Pompey are one up on Reading and Van Persie has put Arsenal in front against the Hammers.

I think Niemi has a knock. Good to see Kasey in goal - three Yanks on for Fulham today. Dempsey's had a couple of good chances.

Blogger gatorbob said...

They've looked good - who scored? Kanu?

10:42 AM

Uh oh,
Leeds are down to ten men. Kandol sent off for a second bookable offence

10:43 AM

Liverpool still at 0-0. What on earth has happened to them? They were flying in the first few weeks.

They didn't show the pen claim for Fulham

10:54 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Ben Haim went up for a header in the box and it came off his arm. I suppose the ref could claim that it was unintentional but he was miles away from the play at the time.

Alex coming on for JT in the second half. Picked up a knock or scared off by Dempsey?

11:03 AM

Terry off Alex on?

Did I just use first names or last!!

11:03 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Ooh, how did that stay out?

11:05 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I am starting to dislike Terry.
Everyone talks of toughness.
He has a fractured cheek bone.
Great save by Keller

11:05 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Apparently the second bookable offense that Kandol was sent off for was "sarcastically applauding the referee's decision." Pathetic. Now we've got to hold on at Gillingham with a one goal lead and ten men.

11:07 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Well, JT's Judas routine against Jose hasn't endeared him to any Chelski fans this week. Nor has his new deal with them for a nine-year contract, during which he'll be promised the largest cash payout in the club. Bit greedy, eh?

11:08 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

That is pathetic to be sent off for that!!!

Big mistake by David James.

Crowd cheers when Sheva goes off

11:13 AM

Blackburn have taken the lead at Sunderland

11:13 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

From the Beeb

A goalkeeping howler from David James who comes racing a out of his box on the right to cut out a long ball forward. He doesn't and Dave Kitson fires in from an acute angle with a cool finish.

11:14 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Blackburn score again

My SkySports window and has live table. They refuse to give Leeds there points. They are still back down with six points. They would be up to nine and in mid table

11:23 AM

Blogger United We Stand said...

Let's hope it continues to be miserable

11:33 AM

Yeah, that was a time wasting one as well. It sounds like since we were reduced to ten men, we've been trying to play the time out.

11:59 AM

Full time at Gillingham - 1-1. Can't complain too much about the string ending. But the referee certainly seemed to be trying as hard as he could to help the Gills out.

12:53 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Half time

Very very very unimpressive.

What is going on?

1:04 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Half-time and we still haven't seen any goals on FSC this morning. Why couldn't we have got that Pompey-Reading match?

This is still winnable for United, even though Brum are working very hard as they did last week against Pool. It'll take a moment of magic. I still think they should take off old man Giggs, let Tevez drift wide left and put on their only proper striker - Saha.

1:05 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

What did you think of the Fulham penalty claim - seemed a good shout to me.

Love the Drogba kung fu kick - lovely stuff.

1:10 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

GOAL! Ronaldo nips in tuck it home there after a bad mistake from Quedreau.

1:26 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Good save there from Kruschak after a deflection from Rio. McSheffrey looks a good player for Brum. And how on earth did they get Johan Djourou on loan off the Arse. Good biz from Stevie Bruce there.

1:31 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Get Giggs off - he looks thoroughly gassed. And where's he playing?

1:33 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Uh oh, Nafti's definitely going into the book there for a trip on Ronaldo.

1:35 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Finally Giggsy's coming off and Saha is on. And almost immediately, Saha's knocked Djourou off balance and the Arsenal kid is on the turf.

1:44 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

One nil up but still very depressed.
What is up with my lot?

Could have been a pen for Fulham. I agree.

I also agree with taking Giggs off. He was hopeless

1:45 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

We need Nev to get good crosses in.
Brown is no Gary Neville

1:47 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Agreed, Brown's had a torrid time against McSheffrey today. You can't see the Neviller being made a monkey like that.

1:50 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

As they say, though, the mark of the championship contender is winning 1-0 when not firing on all cylinders.

1:51 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Tevez off now. What did you think of him today, Dave?

2:04 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

It's a testament to Brum's performance today that SAF hasn't rested the main attackers earlier.

2:05 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Well, another win for United.

But I am very upset and disappointed.

This is not how I want my team to play. United NEVER take to the corner to waste time. That is not the way United play. Ronaldo, Saha and Rooney all did it!! What is going on? Knock it off.
I am not a happy camper.

Cheers,
Dave

2:10 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Another win for United and a useful one there. You may not be happy with the way that your side is performing but you can't argue with three points - something Pool couldn't get last weekend against Brum. It's clear what Stevie Bruce intends to do this season. Will it work? That remains to be seen. There are a lot more rubbish and disorganized teams in the league.
