Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Carling Cup Third Round!

It's Carling Cup time again. I missed out on the action yesterday when the Arsenal kids topped an Owen-less Newcastle and Fernando Torres proved a point by notching a hat-trick. Today, we've got ManYoo hosting Coventry and real, potential banana skin as Chelsea travel to Hull. That plus a couple of all-Premiership matches adds up to an exciting afternoon of the "beautiful game." I'll be around for it - will you?

Interesting looking side for Chelski today:

23. Carlo Cudicini
35. Juliano Belletti
22. Tal Ben-Haim
26. John Terry
3. Ashley Cole
24. Shaun Wright-Phillips
5. Michael Essien
9. Steve Sidwell
21. Salomon Kalou
17. Scott Sinclair
14. Claudio Pizarro

With the exception of Cudicini, Belletti, Sidwell, Sinclair and Pizarro, that's fairly close to their first team. You think that Avram realizes that this is the closest Chelski will come to silverware this year?

Come on you Shrimpers!

And in contrast, here's the side that Sir Alex is running out against Coventry today:

29. Tomasz Kuszczak
26. Phillip Bardsley
23. Jonathan Evans
19. Gerard Pique
25. Danny Simpson
17. Luis Nani
30. Lee Martin
22. John O'Shea
33. Chris Eagles
21. Fangzhou Dong
8. Oliveira Anderson

Good to see my boy Fangzhou Dong geting a match.

That's interesting - apparently Jay Jay Okocha is playing for Hull these days. I had no idea, but it reinforces my gut feeling that Hull will knock Chelski out today and cue more crisis talks at Stamford Bridge.

Dean Ashton has just missed a one-on-one with the Plymouth keeper; blew it over the bar. Shame.

From 365: "It's end to end stuff at Old Trafford at the moment with Coventry trying to attack Manchester United with Robbie Simpson looking dangerous."

Well, well, well. Come on you Sky Blues!

Half an hour gone in most of the Carling Cup matches and still no goals for the punters. I don't think I've ever seen a day in which all games in a competition were goal-less at this stage.

Damn! Chelski are one up through Scott Sinclair - his first goal for the club - at Hull.

Heya Dave. Don't leave - come on, you'll miss Gerard Pique's first goal for the club!

As Dave mentioned before he buggered off, Michael Mifsud has scored for Coventry in the 27th minute.

My oh my!

From 365: "Mifsud has nearly got his and Coventry's second at Olod Trafford, but his cheeky back-heel has come back off the post as Manchester United remain second best."

Half time whistles going and still only those two goals - for Chelski and Coventry - to report. The Hammers have come close on several occasions but may regret those big misses.

So, it looks as if the gambit of playing a stronger side in the Carling Cup worked out for Avram Grant this afternoon as Chelski battered the poor Shrimpers 4-0. Not so for Sir Alex as his kids went down to Coventry 0-2 at Old Trafford. Sorry Dave. Still, there's always the league, FA Cup, Champions League and so on.

West Ham, Spurs, Bolton all into the next round.
