Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Indoor League!

Hey-yup Lads. It's getting a bit parky out there. Time for some indoor league, yes?

Ee, by gum, it is, Sir Trev. I'll give you a game of skittles anytime, mate. Any time. Get ready for some "floppers."

Honestly, though, it's 65 degrees down here in the Swamp today. Perfect weather for a wee kickabout.

Thanks for the laugh, mate!

I've often shared with friends the absurdity of the Indoor League . . . recall that they also had arm wrestling as one of the competitions . . . thanks for finding this, I'll share it certainly.

I found a bunch of "Indoor League" vids on YouTube yesterday, including a brilliant interview with a geezer who's really choked up over winning the coin shoving (whatever they call that) competition. I think Gooner's started a tradition on the LOB.

Here's the thing, though. Does anybody remember this being on the telly in the 70s? Maybe it's a part of my brain that been lost over the years, but I don't remember it.

You don't remember Indoor League? Really? I know I wouldn't know who Fred Trueman was without it. I had no idea that he was a cricketer because of my impression of him as that pipe-smoking, beer drinking, man-in-the-bar presenter.

My faded recollection was that it came on around 2pm once a week, but not year round. It was the only thing worth watching before 4 pm if you were having a sick day.

Do you really think that's beer in the mug? Wasn't there a prohibition of drinking on telly at that time? (May still be). It's looks like a pint of Best Bitter, but I reckon it's a bit of caramel coloring in with some fizz. Not that he didn't have a pint or two when the cameras weren't rolling, though.

My memory of Fred was as a cricket presenter on the Sunday County league matches, a surprising number of which I watched. That and the brilliant Python sketch that featured him bowling to a number of inanimate objects such as a car. I'll have to dig that one up on YouTube.

It must've been easy to write for Python with stuff like the Indoor League to saterize.
