Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

UEFA Cup Final Live!

Everyone was expecting to see Bayern and Fiorentina today but it's Zenit St. Petersburg vs. Rangers instead. I'm sure that Davey will be tuning in just to see the hallowed pitch of Old Trafford on display one more time this season. It's on FSC live starting at 2:45.

Join me for the afternoon, won't you?

It sounds like Ibrox inside Old Trafford tonight as something like 60,000 Rangers have made their way down the motorway to Manchester today.

But you'd have to fancy Zenit after their destruction of Bayern in the semis, whereas Rangers eked out the win on penalties after fairly uninspiring performances.

To add spice to the occasion, Zenit manager Dick Advocaat used to be at Rangers.

Here we go....

Good early possession from Zenit here. The pitch at OT looks like a snooker table - should inspire some good football.

2:48 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Good early chance for Darcheville but the Zenit defense clears well.

Blogger gatorbob said...

Great atmosphere from the 'Gers fans. The whole Stretford End was basically bouncing up and down there trying to put off the Zenit player taking a free kick. Incredible!

Wow! Max Bretos just mentioned that over 100K Rangers fans came down to Manchester today. I'd heard 60K. That is amazing. It'll be even more amazing if the day goes off without trouble in the city.

One way traffic from Zenit so far. Rangers look fairly unimpressive.

3:04 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

It really looks as if Rangers are playing for penalties straight from the start.

Boy, this match is like a couple of doses of Nyquil before bedtime.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Half an hour gone - Rangers have yet to have a shot on goal.

3:20 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Dangerous free kick opportunity now for Zenit....

But it comes to nothing. The 'Gers backline is well drilled, I'll give them that.

3:21 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Darcheville already looks gassed from continually having to track back.

3:23 PM

Half-time: 0-0 Probably the most dull half of footie that I've watched all season. I actually broke off during the match and answered my email.

I am here

Rangers have been like this all season in the UEFA Cup

3:52 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Rangers aren't exactly trying to defuse the pre-match criticism that they're boring and negative.

3:53 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Rangers look hopeless

3:53 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Hi Dave! Yeah, they are boring, aren't they? Are you enjoying a last look at OT for the season, though?

3:54 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Hull have tied it up in the Playoffs
It is 1-1 on the night and 3-1 on agg.

3:55 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Rangers go close a couple of times and maybe a pen. There was in the first half for Zen.

3:56 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Mr. Dahlgren, the final is at the City of Manchester Stadium.

THAT'S THE WRONG TEAM MATE!!

3:57 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Definite penalty there, for sure.

So Hull and Bristol City in the playoff final, eh? Could either stay up next season or will they both be shooting practice for Rooney and co?

Mike is in the middle of the Here and Now Tour.
They just had a show in Manchester. This was his comment.

Just escaped from Manchester with 100,000 Glaswegians singing their hearts out!

3:58 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

This isn't OT? Sorry, mate.

3:58 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

They were the ones I wanted. I didn't want Watford, Palace or Warnock in the Prem again

3:59 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I'll bet it's a magic atmosphere today.

3:59 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Why didn't Walter Smith play that Novo geezer? He's a much better player than Darcheville.

4:01 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I agree with you on Warnock - he should be banned from football altogether.

4:02 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Pleasant surprise
I turned on Five Live Sport Extra and the Playoff hasn't been blacked out

4:03 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I'll have to check it for tomorrow.

4:04 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

It was blacked out on Monday

2102: "Rangers have gone eight hours of Uefa Cup football without conceding a goal."

Of course, when have THEY scored a goal?

4:05 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Yikes, what the keeper doing!!!

4:06 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oh dear, Alexander has gone walkabout but the Rangers defender clears.

4:06 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

The Zenit attacker should have done better there.

4:08 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Weren't United in for Barry Ferguson at one point?

4:13 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Hull have just scored a second.

AND Zenit scores!!!

4:14 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I hope we weren't in for Fergie!!
He was hopeless at Everton

4:15 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Surely it's time to stick Novo on.

4:16 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

They should have scored again

4:18 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I've just noticed that Nicky Barmby scored Hull's first goal. He's a walking trivia question. I reckon he's got to be the player with the most number of Premiership clubs if Hull go up. Off the top of my head, I can think of Spurs, Leeds, Boro, but there are probably others.

4:19 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Liverpool?

4:19 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Hull are minutes away from being in the final for a place in the top division for first ever time
The largest City not to be in the top division.
They are also going to Wembley for the first time in their history!!
They were Leeds rivals to go down last season!!

4:20 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I remember that!

4:21 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Just looked up Nicky

Spurs, Boro, Everton, Liverpool and Leeds.
Forest and Hull outside the top tier

4:21 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

So that would be six Prem. clubs if Hull go up, surely a record.

4:22 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Platini's looking really bored with it all.

4:24 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Rangers fans not singing anymore.

4:25 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Well, he certainly has Giggs beaten

4:25 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Did you see that Ian Dowie is the new QPR manager?

4:29 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Really? He's the sort of person I can't understand keeps getting jobs. What's the point? Has he ever done anything as a manager?

4:31 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Hull have scored again.

4:32 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Rangers should have put that one away!

4:33 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

What a sitter!

4:33 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Make that FOUR for Hull
SIX-one on Agg.

4:34 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Kim Jong Il's coming on?!

4:35 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

It's over at the KC Stadium

The Battle of the Citys in at Wembley

4:35 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Over at the CoM Stadium

Rangers are done.
Could this hurt their league chances?

4:36 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

That's it!!

BEST OF LUCK TOMORROW!!

4:37 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

2-0 Zenit! A training pitch goal there. Nice interplay but they made Rangers defenders look like chimps.

4:37 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Cheers, mate. I'll be here with bells on!

Some problems in Manchester when the big screens failed to work in the city center.
Riot police had to come in.

Shame
