Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Gold Cup Update #2

I'm still having trouble catching these matches live with my life in relative chaos right now, but I'm still enjoying keeping up with it on-line. I'm especially amused by the plight of the Mexican side whose draw with Panama last night means that the rampant Guadelupe side could put them out with a big win on Sunday night.

The final round of matches is relative clear cut. Canada and the U.S. have already qualified for the next round and will almost certainly top Groups A and B respectively. That leaves El Salvador and Costa Rica to duel for second place tonight in their final group matches. That'll be followed tomorrow night with the U.S. facing Haiti and Honduras facing lowly Grenada. You'd have to pick Honduras to go through second. Finally on Sunday, we have that titanic match-up between Guadelupe and Mexico as well as the winner of Panama and Nicaragua having a chance to slip into the final rounds at El Tri's expense. Should be fun.

You failed to mention that the Panama Mexico game was notable too because

1. Aguirre the Mexican coach was sent off because he tackled a Panamanian player, who retaliated and was also sent off.

2. Then later after a fist-fight, a further Mexican and Panamanian player were sent off.

3. Then finally, a Panamanian was hit with debris from the stands. When being stretchered off, he was hit again with more debris.

Wow, goals too? What a cracker that must have been.

Fight, Fight, Fight!

b-t-w, Simon's been rabbiting on about how this tournament can't be taken seriously until the hosting of it starts getting shared around.

My take is that most of the time, the immigrant population of the US ensures that we play most of the time in front of a largely away crowd. Sure you can point to games against Cuba, Grenada, and Guadeloupe, but against any C.A. national team, Mexico, Jamaica, T&T, we're swamped by their support.

I completely agree with Simon. Although I understand why the U.S. is a convenient host nation, it's totally unfair. We have home advantage, which means that we tend to win every time and grab the Confederations Cup spot, inflated FIFA ranking and tournament seeding as a result. How well would we do if we had to play in the likes of San Salvador or Kingston?
