Pop quiz. One of the teams involved in Premier League action tonight is bottom of the table, facing a nine-point deduction because of the fact that they are in administration, have just laid off 85 staff, appear unable to find a buyer for love nor money, and will reportedly listen to offers for any of their players. The other is Liverpool. So which team is most under pressure to get a winning result tonight?

Clue... it's not Pompey

Costa are attacking the Kop in the first half!

Did they lose the toss or do they want to have a good half?

News out of the Premier League that Phil Brown has been sacked by Hull.
What has he ever done for the club anyway? Only getting them to the top league for the first time in their history and keeping them there!

4:10 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Hello UWS. I thought Costa had a good shout for a penalty. It appeared to be a blatant hand ball.

4:10 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Come on Pompey... do the double over Costa

4:10 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I know Hull City is struggling, but this is really disgraceful. Hull City were struggling against relegation to league one when Brown took over and had never been on the top flight. I guess that's football in this era.

Hello MUR.. I agree but I will never admit it

4:12 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Costa still don't seem to be going after Pompey here

THEY BETTER PLAY LIKE THIS NEXT SUNDAY!!

4:14 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I read your article about David Beckham. This is the first that I have heard about the injury. The article was really interesting. I will respond to it after the match. You brought up some really good points.

4:15 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

It is official... he is out for at least 4 months

4:16 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Costa may have one eye on the Sunday match instead of this match and may not be up for this match. I hope they play like this on Sunday.

4:16 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Beckham may be ready for the MLS playoffs providing The Galaxy make the playoffs. As you stated definitely out for the World Cup.

4:18 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

They have Lille on Thursday too!

Just typical if they play hard against us. I am definitely not saying it is a gimme

Costa have done against us lately. It remind me of United vs Costa in the 70s and 80s. United would do well head to head but Costa would win the league.
Vice Versa these days

4:22 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Still early in the match, but Costa have not really created a clear scoring opportunity other than the handball incident. Costa will look foolish if Pompey hold them to a draw in front of the Kop.

4:23 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Costa are asking for a penalty every five minutes!

I think Beckham may be done for good

4:23 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

At least don't play in Europe this week. Costa have a tough match vs Lille on Thursday. They might be fatigued by Sunday. I do remember us giving Costa a tough time in the 70s and 80s. They never had an easy match against us.

4:25 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Fernando Torres has been falling rather easily in the box. I think it was tougher to knock me down when I was a student at Feltwell.

4:27 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Torres couldn't miss that one.
Made by Gerrard and Maxi... TERRIBLE CLEARANCE!!

Costa 1 up

4:28 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Fernando Torres scores. 1-0. Rather Pompey GAVE Costa a goal. It was the only way they were going to score.

4:28 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The United defense won't be nearly as charitable on Sunday.

4:29 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Two nil!!!

Where is the Pompey defense!!

Babel and an eternity to make a move and score

4:30 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL. 2-0 Costa Babbek scores after good passing and ball watching by Pompey.

4:30 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Makes me wonder if Pompey are heading straight to League One.

4:31 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Three nil!!

Aqualani

First time they have scored three in a league game in six months

PLEASE DON'T GET THEM UP FOR SUNDAY!

4:34 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Now Costa can be as pathetic as they want for the remainder of the match and still get the three points. Goal Aquilani 3-0. No Pompey defense to be seen.

4:34 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Costa have three games in six days. I am hoping they will be exhausted by Sunday. I am surprised that Costa are playing a Monday night game with two matches just a few days apart.

4:35 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Was this Auqalani's first goal for Costa?

4:36 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Six minutes and three goals

When they are down, they could sneak up on us but now United will expect some competition

Wonder how they will play on Thursday? If they come out all guns a blazin... I will be worried!

4:38 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

This is more an indication of how poor Pompey are rather than how good Costa are? We beat Pompey 5-0 without really playing well.

4:40 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

If Carragher gets a goal scoring chance then what does that tell you about Pompey's defense?

4:43 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Chance for Piquionne. Misses a sitter. Will Pompey get another clear cut chance like that?

4:45 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Halftime. Costa 3 Pathetic Pompey 0 . I believe more of the same in the second half.

4:49 PM

Tomorrow there is Chelski vs Inter and Sevilla vs CSKA Moscow in CL action as well as Wigan vs Villa in the EPL. Afull round of action from the championship as well. Any comments or predictions?

I am back from picking up my 8th grader from tennis practice

As for my predictions, I think that Chelsea will be okay. I am not sure the Sevilla CSKA tie
Villa better win!

5:00 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

My oldest daughter will be starting middle school this fall and has indicated an interest in tennis.I am picking Sevilla since they held CSKA 1-1 in Moscow. The teams coming out for the second half.

5:04 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Not sure what Pompey can do in the second half other than play for pride.

5:07 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Nearly 4-0. Great save by Ashdown from Gerrard. Also great save from a deflected shot from Babbel

5:12 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Costa hit the woodwork

This game is done!

5:13 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Great save by Pepe!
Good run and nice strike by Brown but saved.... put it to the side of the keeper son

5:15 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Yes. It is matter of damage limitation for Pompey. I was hoping Pompey would make Costa work harder for their win . Great save by Reyna from Michael Brown. A Pompey goal would make things rather interesting.

5:15 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That explains why Brown scores few goals.

5:16 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

All the Costa fans are going to go on the radio and say that after this display their still going to win the league!!

5:17 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Great goalkick by Reina there... A low volley right to Babel

5:18 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Typical Costa.Hopefully Lille and us will give them a hard dose of reality.

5:19 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Interesting headed back pass from Piquionne. Almost 4-0. Why is Grant bringing on Mokoena? 3-0 down and bringing on a defensive midfielder. This sounds like damage control and a manager conceding the match.

5:25 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Glen Johnson appealing for a penalty. Seemed like a fair challenge to me. That's Costa's first penalty appeal since the first half.

5:27 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Martin Kelly making his premier league debut coming on a s a sub for Glen Johnson. The perfect time to make a premier league debut.

5:31 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I am off to coach my son's team

Talk to you tomorrow

5:32 PM

Kelly's first action is win Costa a corner even though it appeared to be a goal kick.

5:32 PM

Cheers UWS.See you tomorrow.

4-1 Pompey score a consolation through Belahdj . Gerrard should have been sent off for an elbow to the back of Michael Brown's head. Hopefully Gerrard will get a three match ban and be inelligible for Sunday's match.

5:50 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Match over. Costa 4 Pompey 1 An easy match for Costa. CL matches tomorrow.

5:55 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Gerrard faces a possible three match ban for an elbow missed by the referee.

Thanks for keeping the home fires burning today, lads. I was bombing up the Pennsylvania Turnpike coming home from the weekend in DC this afternoon while this game was going.

Shame about Pompey - it's all over bar the counting.

As to your pop quiz, Dave, I'm guessing Osasuna who lost 1-0 to Atletico Madrid today in Spanish Premier Liga action. Am I right?
