Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Morning, Birthday Boy! How are things out in the eastern part of the state? I'm here in Blue Devil HQ with bruvver and nephew, looking forward to the match.
Traditionally, the 3rd/4th place games are exciting because the pressure's off and the teams come out and play with freedom. For example, the 3rd/4th match in 2002 produced nine goals including the fastest in WC history. Let's hope for the same today!
Good morning UWS and Blue Devil. I hope the 3rd/4th place game is as exciting as the match in 2002. West Germany and Uruguay met in the 3rd/4th place game in 1970 with West Germany winning 1-0.
Good Morning MUR and BD... I hope it is good game
Bob, make sure you say hello to Steve and Eric

Heartbreak for Miroslav Klose, who has flu and cannot start for Germany tonight. More team news on the way from Port Elizabeth.
Hello Eric and Steve. Klose will not have a chance to break Ronaldo's career World Cup goal scoring record as this is probably his last World Cup.
What a shame for Klose. He must be really gutted to miss out on his chance. I really thought he might have a good shot of topping Fatty Ronaldo today.
The Gooner and Chip off the Gooner Block wish all of the LOB faithful a happy World Cup Final weekend.
Manchester United has released the 23-man roster for its upcoming North American tour that includes a stop at Reliant Stadium in Houston for the Major League Soccer All-Star game.
Wayne Rooney, not surprisingly, is not included in the squad, nor is Gary Neville, who suffered a calf injury in a recent training session.
Those accompanying Sir Alex Ferguson to this side of the Atlantic Ocean are: Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Dimitar Berbatov, Edwin Van der Sar, Tomasz Kuszczak, John O'Shea, Wes Brown, Rafael, Fabio, Jonny Evans, Darren Fletcher, Chris Smalling, Darron Gibson, Nani, Danny Welbeck, Federico Macheda, Mame Biram Diouf, Tom Cleverley, Ritchie De Laet, Corry Evans, Ben Amos and Gabriel Obertan. Javier Hernandez will meet up with the team a day prior to the All-Star game.
I wish all LOB members a happy World Cup weekend. Since I will not be able to join LOB for the World Cup Final, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at LOB for allowing me to be part of the group and making me feel really welcome. I have enjoyed being part of LOB since joining in February. I have never been part of a blog prior to joining LOB, so this has been a learning experience as well.
According to ABC,Klose will be on the subs bench tonight. He might get some playing time.
Chris Fowler,Lexi, and Stevie Mac are in the studio. Loser Lexi is talking about placing in show. This is a World Cup match, not a dog judging contest.
It's been great to have you on board, mate. I'm looking forward to meeting you in the flesh (so to speak) in Wakefield in August and to some banter during the 10/11 season.
It has been fun.. you'll be missed tomorrow
Thanks for the squad Bob
I don't think I will be able to go see them play this time. I went to see them the last two times. The first year was great with all the stars here. The second time was not so good. Of course, beating Juventus 4-1 the first time and losing on penalties against Milan after a 1-1 draw might have something to do with it!
They are not playing in NY either. They will be in Philly and Toronto... you should go to that one Bob!!
Did you know that the USA are playing Brazil at the new Giants Stadium on August 10 at 8 pm
This is a rematch of the 1970 3rd/4th place match. This is the first time in World Cup history that we have a rematch of a 3rd/4th place game.
Chris Waddle is talking about how bad he felt about playing in this game in '90. He said that the normal nonstarters were really up for it
Here's a trivia question for you lads. Who is the only England player to capture the Golden Boot? And what year did he grab it?
Five Live said that Podolski has the flu and Klose has a bad back
Gary Lineker in '86
Klose doesn't get a game for Bayern but still does it for the national team... Fabio, how about the #7 at Old Trafford???
Thank you UWS and Blue Devil. Thank you for the squad BD. I believe Manchester United plays an MLS ALL Star team in Houston on July 18th. I am not sure if I will be able to attend .
UWS is correct. It was Lineker in '86 with six goals.
Last time Uruguay have beaten a European team in the World Cup was in 1970
I think the beat the former Soviet Union with a late extra time winner in the quarters. They have NEVER defeated Germany in eight meetings. They have six losses and two draws. This is not a good sign for Uruguay.
What the hell is Lexi talking about - "HP Sauce?"
I remember in '86 after Maradona scored two against England in the quarters and two against Belgium in the semi final. He was only a goal behind Lineker with the Final to go but he failed to score!!
He was also talking about placing in show. I am not sure what he is thinking?
I have stopped listening to him
Uruguay I think want this more than Germany
Butt is making his first start for Germany at age 36.
Apparently, it is bucketing down with rain at the stadium
19:19
Tell you what, you can go anywhere if you happen to be Fifa president. Germany's players are waiting patiently in the tunnel, and who appears to shake their hands and indulge in a little light "banter", but none other than Sepp Blatter.
Five Live says they are coming out of the tunnel... ABC miss it!
BD, I apologize for not responding to you earlier statement. I look forward to meeting you in person at Wakefield as well. My only regret is that there will not be more LOB members there.
Teams out on the tunnel. Sepp "40 Bad Ideas an Hour" Blatter shaking the hands. Where's QE2?
You, Bivalve and me will have to represent the LOB. I'm hoping that we might be able to pick up a new participant or two that weekend, eh?
The weather looks okay but the pitch looks a bit dodgy.
Uruguay's anthem is one of the longest in the world. They only played the first two verses!
Good to see that Howard Webb, as I predicted, is going to be the ref tomorrow
Any news what color each team is wearing?
Spain are the higher ranked? Do they get the choice?
Would Holland want to play in white? They wore orange twice in the '70s... how did that work out for them?
Germany make five changes to their starting lineup while Uruguay keep their normal lineup.
And away we go... one more kick off to go!
I predicted Webby as well. Great minds think alike! The teams kick off
Don't they flip a coin for the home team advantage?
Can't find it anywhere yet
I agree with Ian Darke. Bollocks has not been missed by Germany.
Early free kick for the Germans....
And Mueller's got it in the net!
No, offside called on Cacau I think.
Mueller was flagged offside.
Ball in the net, but Ian Darke didn't hear the whistle.. I did
I don't think it was offside... it was handball by Mueller
ooh, nasty challenge!!!
New boy Aogo goes in with a XXX tackle and should have got a red. Yellow only. Nasty.
Aogo is booked for a nasty challenge.I agree that he could have been sent off.
That should have been a red
Now Uruguay have a free kick chance. Forlan's scored two of these. Can he get his fifth here?
No - into the wall. And now it's another free kick. Handball?
Forlan hits the wall but a handball
The ref is being pressured so far with some tough calls
Diego hits it just wide and high
Forlan curls the shot wide.
It is an open match but not very friendly!
This match already has a much more open feel than either semifinal.
Ian Darke stated that he would pick Pig Stick" as his player of the tournament. I would pick Wesley Schneider who has five goals, four assists, and four man of the match awards. What a tournament!
Oh - Friedrich hits a crossbar with a great header from the corner.
ooh Fredrich off the bar
That's the guy who scored against Argentina!
Never scored and now this
The Gremans pile on the pressure as Friedrich's header bounces off the bar off an Ozil corner. A textbook corner.
I would plump for Forlan for Man of the Tournament.
What a start by Germany. They are really out to prove a point.
I thought that was a great tackle by Jansen. Harkes is wrong. He never caught the foot.
Uruguay are playing like a tired team.
You're right, MUR. Uruguay aren't click quite yet.
Uruguay will place higher in the World Cup than their South American qualifying group. They barely defeated Costa Rica in a playoff.
For some reason the crowd has decided to start a wave. That's where all the noise is coming from. It has nothing to do with what's going on on the pitch.
GOAL! Mueller sticks home a rebound after a Schweinsteiger rocket is only parried by Muslera.
1-0 Germany!
GOAL!!
MUELLER WITH HIS FIFTH!!!!
Keeper could only parry Bastion's shot
1 nil
The Pigsticker took a wicked Jabulani swerve which made it difficult for Muslera to handle.
GOAL !!! 1-0 GERMANY. THIS HAS BEEN COMING FOR A WHILE. MUSLERA COULD NOT HOLD THE ROCKET FROM SCHWEINSTEIGER AND MUELLER WITH GREAT INSTINCTS SCORES THE REBOUND.
Mueller would win the Golden Boot with more assists right now. That's not going to help my Predictions ranking at all.
Did you hear that?
Mueller to win the GB for having more assists!
There can't be a draw!! If I new that, I wouldn't have chosen two!!
I do not blame Muslera for the goal. Pig Stick must have been 40 yards out. What a rocket of a shot and what a swerve.
No matter how today finishes... Uruguay are going to finish higher in the World Cup Finals than they did in qualifying!
I think Schneider has one more assist then Mueller and also has five goals. My source is Wikipedia.
No - I don't blame Muslera either. He was clearly fooled by the swerve and was going the wrong way.
The BBC keep calling it the Golden Shoe!!
Apparently it was called "The Golden Shoe" up through 1978. Mario Kempes was the last person to be awarded that.
I think the booing of Suarez is horrible. The fans need to get over. Suarez was already punished. Forlan's corner is cleared by Friedrich then Ozil crosses to Khedeira whose header is tipped over by Muslera. The play was called offside.
GOAL! Cavani - who has come alive in this match - slots home after a great tackle by Perez from Schweinsteiger.
1-1 Game on!
GOAL 1-1. CAVANI SCORE . WHAT AN EXCELLENT BREAK BY URUGUAY AND A GREAT TACKLE ON PIG STICK IN MIDFIELD.
Struth... I take the dog outside for a pee and miss teh equalizer!
I agree, MUR. Lay off Luis. I think he compounded the handball with cheering the missed penalty from the touchline and then the statements about his "Hand of God." But still - any player would have done the same.
Harkesy claims he would have been quick enough to head a ball off the line. What a larf!
Pig stick turns from hero to villain after a rare error in midfield . Suarez deserves credit fro a superb assist. Cavani scored with a great finish .
I am in agreement too. When it happened I didn't put any blame on him. I turned on 606 and it was completely negative
He didn't get away with it... he missed the semi final
If a penalty wasn't given.. then I would have a problem
I was pleased to see Luis have a hand in the goal. He would be a great addition at OT.
I'd take him
Stop talking about how small Uruguay is!!!
You only need 11 to play!!!
Uruguay has population of 3.5 million. The least of any country in the World Cup.
Good point,UWS!
Again... stop talking about it!!
Manchester weather out there!
Doesn't seem to be fazing the Germans. They're used to it peeing down.
Cavani appeared to be on side as he was going for his second goal.
I hate how 'americans' pronounce Uruguay!!
Oh - Suarez should have hit the target there. In one on one with the keeper.
Suarez hits one just wide
You mean with a hard "Y" sound?
Butt deals well with the cross. This has been his only action other than picking the ball out of the net. Suarez breaks after Khedeira loses possession, but Suarez shoots wide with just the keeper to beat.
Free kick chance for the Germans
Free kick for the Germans now but probably too close in for this ball.
Deflected out for a corner....
Pig Stick's free kick is deflected off of Lugano for a corner.
No, the U sound at the beginning
I say Your a guay.. so does Ian Darke
The americans say er aguay
Forlan almost scores from a corner
The corner creates problems for Uruguay and they give away another corner. the keeper fumbles and Uruguay break through Forlan , but Suarez is tackled.
You're the Spanish speaker, mate, so I'll defer to you on those matters.
How do you guys say it?
I say it like Ian... not John
Cacau nearly in but Fucile nicked it away at the last second.
That is it
Half time
1-1
One minute of stoppage time as Forlan nearly scores off a corner. Cacau wins a corner. It doesn't work. Halftime and 1-1.
I say it your way but I do hear people saying it without the hard "Y" sound at the beginning like Harkesy as if that's correct. I dunno...
I think I can help with the pronunciation of Uruguay as I live in a predominantly Spanish speaking area. It is oorroogwi. The final i is an upper case i and the double r is the Spanish double r. The Spanish in this area is much different than Castillian Spanish. I hope my explanation was not too detailed and I hope this helped.
The teams are coming out for the second half
Germany out first
I say it wrong then... but I still think it is right!
I have already set the DVR to record the final tomorrow.I should get back from San Antonio. shortly after the final ends. I will leave once this match ends.
The teams kick off.
Make sure record with penalties in mind!!
I will be shocked if we do not see another goal this half. The final three minutes of the first half were literally end to end action.
Second half starting up now....
Keeper struggling again!!
Muslera is really struggling with the corners.
Uruguay in again but Jorgi Butt got in the way well.
oooh, Suarez almost scores there!!
Nice save
THE CROWD ISN'T BOTHERING HIM JOHN!!!
Butt makes a great save from Cavani and Suarez sees his rebound blocked.
I can't imagine that Luis is even aware of the booing. He wouldn't give a toss if he did hear it.
The low corner from Lugano was easily cleared.
I thought Butt did well with the double save. Were those his first saves of the match?
GOAL! Diego Forlan scores his fifth!
What a strike!
TWO ONE!!
Great finish by Forlan!!!
Butt didn't even move there. Rooted to the spot.
BTW, Harkes I think has been talking to Lexi too much lately!!!
Wow what a goal by Forlan. A nice volley left Butt flat footed.2-1 Uruguay.
Forlan must be watching our predictions game . Who is he rooting for?
I stated at the beginning of the half that I would be shocked if we did not see a goal in this half. I expect at least another goal in this match.
Have they answered this?
Is Forlan now ahead of Mueller?
GOAL! Janssen scores with Muslera flapping at the cross.
2-2!
TWO TWO!!!
Jansen
Was that the keeper's fault?
Yes... he was hopeless
Well, they're both on five goals. Not sure of the assist situation.
Ian... get over it!!
GOAL 2-2 AS MUSLERA MISSES THE CROSS BY AOGO AND JANSEN EASILY HEADS INTO THE EMPTY NET. I AM BLOODY NOSTRADAMUS!
ooh, Germany should have done better there!
Ozil should have buried that
Ozil should have put Germany ahead as He spent too long on the ball and was tackled.
Mueller's still ahead with three assists to Forlan, Villa and Sneijder all on one.
I predict one more goal.
Why are you Nostrabobus this time?
Perez is booked for persistent infractions.
Diego Forlan only has one assist so he remains in fourth place, behind Thomas Mueller and also David Villa and Wesley Sneijder as he's played more minutes (even before kick off he'd played more than both) than the latter pair.
He's Nostradavus today.
I just sense a goal. I guess I am.
Great hit by Suarez!
Suarez hits one and it's acrobatically kept out by Butt.
Suarez shoots the wet ball straight at Butt, but it had power and the swerve deceived Butt. He had no choice, but to fist the shot away.
Hey, you've been right all day. Well in, MUR!
Duran Duran is quick off the bench after wanting a call for a back pass. Not bad fro someone that has the flu.
ooh, Forlan almost in
Good match
Oh - Butt keeps Forlan from notching his sixth. Great stuff now at both ends.
Butt saves well from Forlan.Thank you BD.
This has been the best match of this tournament in my opinion.
Great skill by Suarez as he earns a corner.
My favorite is still the US v. Slovenia. And the Italy v. Slovakia was plenty entertaining as well.
Suarez Jabulanis over from the corner. I pick Forlan for man of the match as of now.
Nice rugby tackle there
Those were great matches as well,BD.
Cacau shoots just high and wide.after great work from Jansen.
BBC Radio 5 live's Chris Waddle
"It's very open, it's probably the best game of the tournament. Both teams have gone for it. The problem area for Uruguay is the goalkeeper but they could always sub him and put Luis Suarez in goal!"
Cacau strikes one over as if he knows that his time is almost up. I predict a cameo from SuperMario in a moment.
Keisling coming on for Cacau now....
Klose not coming in.. another youngster on instead
Kiesling is on for Cacau. I agree with you UWS. An excellent tactical decision. We may see Super Mario later.
Boom boom from Chrissy Waddle.
Pigsticker took too long after doing well to drift into the box.
Just like Germany and Uruguay, I want to finish my lat World Cup match with LOB on high note. That may explain my insistence on making accurate predictions.
Schweinsteiger took too long there
Gargano in for Perez who's been booked.
Muslera does better this time after he saves a rocket from Kiesling who just came on as a sub.
More chippiness from Aogo. He's really riding his luck today.
Did you guys chuckle at Waddle's comment... I did
Maxi Perreira takes the free kick. that was definitely not Forlan!
I did - good from from Waddle.
It was hilarious! A great comment by Chris.
Kießling nearly in there again. The boy looks a bit hungry for a goal.
ooh, nice cross and just missed
On Five Live today, they were saying one of the best moments on the radio is when Waddle slammed down his headphones with disgust over England's performance
Klose will not add to his total
Toni Kroos is on for Jansen.
GOAL! Sami Khedira knocks a header in for his debut goal for Germany. A bit of a scramble at a corner again.
3-2!
GOAL 3-2 GERMANY AS KHEDEIRA SCORES WITH A HEADER OFF A CORNER. HORRIBLE DEFENDING FROM THE CORNER.
It was Uruguay for a while but it now Germany and NOW THEY TAKE THE LEAD!!!
Another debut goal for a Germany... Khedira
Again, PUT SUAREZ IN
Khedira's first for Germany. My prediction is that this is the final goal of the match. I do not need any assistance from the octopus.
He did show good reflexes against Ghana. But would the crowd let him out of the stadium in one piece?
I would say ten TOTAL minutes for Uruguay to get a goal
Stupid Octopus!!
I have notice the one he picks is the one on the right!!!
Paul the Octopus is a genius. I doff my thinking cap to him.
I could pick the box on the right too
Boateng shoots straight at Muslera, but does a poor Robert Green impersonation.
Keibling should have done better there
