Guay Not
Good afternoon everyone . We have a fun filled afternoon in store as the Copa America Final kicks off from Buenos Aries at 3 PM. Uruguay and Paraguay battle for South American supremacy and a place in the Confederations Cup. There is an interesting contrast in styles as attacking Uruguay take on defensive Paraguay. The Paraguayans have drawn each of their five contests in this ; three have resulted in 0-0 draws. They needed two penalty shootouts to be in the final. The Uruguayans started with two 1-1 draws, but finished with two wins in their last three matches. They are the form team led by Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan. They eliminated the hosts and favorites, Argentina, in a penalty shootout and were unlucky not to win in 90 minutes as they were the better team. The LA Galaxy host Manchester City at 4 PM, so it should be a busy afternoon,. So guay not join us.

Guay not, indeed! Thanks for starting our thread this afternoon, MUR, and for the shout-out.
I'm settling in for what I expect will be some fireworks this afternoon. Uruguay are heavy favorites but Venezuela will know that they'll have to sit through an eight-hour Hugo Chavez lecture if they aren't victorious. A lot on the line!
I've got the preview show from Univision on right now, but I may well switch over to an English language link on p2p.
Thanks, BD. Another interesting stat is that Paraguay's five goals have come from five different goal scorers. Therefore, not one player on that team has more than one goal. Luis Suarez has three goals and FC Porto defender Alvaro Pereira has chipped in with another two for Uruguay. The leading scorer in the tournament is Peru and Hamburg striker Jose Paolo Guerrero who has five goals, but three came when Venezuela were down to ten men yesterday. Uruguay kept him off the board.
I would think that Uruguay must be the favorites, but they will have to be patient against this well organized Paraguayan team.
Starting line-ups:
Uruguay - Muslera, Lugano, V. Pereira, Cacares, Coates, Perez, A. Pereira, Gonzalez, Arevalo, Forlan, Suarez.
Paraguay - Villar, Veron, Marecos, Piris, DaSilva, Ortigoza, Riveros, Cacares, Zeballos, Vera, Valdez.
The final is underway from Buenos Aries.
why are fans in parkas, hats ,and gloves in 57 degree weather. That is not Arctic weather.
Uruguay win an early corner after a defensive mix up.
What a superb save by Villar from point blank range from a header off a corner , followed by two goal line clearances.
Uruguay win another corner.
Half chance there for Paraguay.
Forlan to take the corner that leads to another.
The corner fails to clear the first defender , but Uruguay maintain possession.
Alvaro Pereira has a bloody nose.
Oh - Lugano's header cleared off the line!
Luis Suarez wins another corner.
Villar punches clear from the corner.
Another corner for Uruguay.
Lugano wants a penalty, but there was minimal contact.
Some definite shirt-tugging going on there on Lugano - I loved the pained expression on his face getting up. Nothing he hasn't done to his opponents.
Paraguay have not seen this sort of pressure in this tournament as Villar rushes to clear.
Paraguay win their first corner.
The corner is cleared and Uruguay counter.
Looking at the replay, Uruguay should have had a penalty for hand ball on the line with the Paraguayan defender being off for an early bath.
I've got the ESPNUK coverage on here:
http://nwxyz2.blogspot.com/
It's about 10 seconds behind.
A real let-off there for Paraguay!
But it didn't last long - Suarez with the opener!
GOAL !!!! LUIS SUAREZ WALKS THROUGH THE DEFENSE AND FINISHES OFF THE POST!
Brilliant finish there from nothing. The deflected ball came over the top and he sold a lovely dummy, jinking in on his left foot and scoring off the post.
1-0!
This goal was coming. It was just a matter of time.Uruguay have been on the attack from the kickoff. They deserve their lead.
21 goals for Uruguay for Suarez now. He'll be a threat in the Premiership for sure - the boy's on fire!
Suarez now has four in this tournament while Peru's Guerrero has five.
Not good new for Man United.
Valdez volleys over. That was a half chance.
Paraguay will be forced to attack. They are not used to coming from behind early in a match.
I still don't rate Liverpool that highly. They don't have the depth of squad. If they have injuries to Suarez, Kuyt, Gerrard or Carroll, they're in trouble.
Cacares with a cynical tug back on Suarez - earns a yellow card.
Caceres is booked for Paraguay for a nasty challenge on Suarez as a break was on. Great skill by Suarez.
That is a good Point, BD. The Scouse need to sign a few more players.
Butch Wilkins doesn't think that Villar could have done anything to stop that shot from Suarez but I disagree. I know that it was deflected but I still reckon he could have got something on that.
Alvaro Perreira is the victim of a harsh tackle.
Paraguay is resorting to thuggish tactics. They risk finishing the match with nine or ten men.
It's all kicking off here now. A fairly innocuous challenge there on Arevalo but he is left clutching his ear in pain. And a lot of his teammates are getting involved for no apparent reason.
Sorry - you're right; it was Pereira.
I though the shot went in off the post. He made a couple of brilliant saves before the goal. The Paraguayans appear to be suffering from nerves.
It looks like Sepp Blatter is having a nap up in the director's box.
Liverpool fans will be wincing there as Suarez is chopped down again unceremoniously.
Suarez is now fouled. it did not appear to be a serious challenge despite the antics.
Blatter is only awake during election time and when women players are wearing short shorts
Perez picks up a yellow - left his foot in.
Diego Perez is booked for that strong challenge.
And now it's Cacares into the book. The ref trying desperately to get control of this match.
Uruguay's Cacares is booked, but the ref was conned by the antics of the Paraguayan player.
The free kick is headed clear.
Any bets on who will get the red card first?
I'll go out on a limb and say the Paraguayan Marecos.
I think it will be the big number ten on Paraguay.
Forlan has not scored in this tournament.
Now it's Maxi Pereira into the book.
M. Perriera is booked for Uruguay.Again the player's antics dictated the ref's decision.
True - but he has laid on a lot of the goals.
The ref has had just about enough with the antics from both sets of players. Waving a lot on now.
That is a good point , BD. As I type Forlan had a chance to score his first of the tournament . He was through with just the keeper, but Villar blocked his attempt.
Oh - Forlan needed just a step to get clear of the defender. Nearly.
Hey Guys,
I just got your skpye message Bob.
i have a link going from ESPN but also have turned on Univision. The TV is about a minute ahead of the link
Forlan is just getting his chance
The corner from Forlan is headed away.
I won't be around for long. It is Kathy's dad's 92 birthday today. He is coming over for dinner
Good after UWS. I am watching the match on Univision.
Welcome, UWS! ESPN will be showing the Galaxy v. Citeh match at the top of the hour.
Happy birthday to Kathy's dad. That is a tremendous achievement.
I'm on this ESPNUK link for this match:
http://nwxyz2.blogspot.com/
Crikey! 92! That's a good innings. Many happy returns to Kathy's dad.
I think I will be on that link in the second half, so I can watch the match on ESPN.
Oh - Suarez barged his way through there but hit the side netting with his shot. Might have shot across Villar there.
We are spoiled for footer these days, aren't we lads!?
Nearly 2-0 as Suarez shot into the side netting, then Forlan shot into the ground, but Villar stumbled back to recover.
We sure are. There are so many more options than in the good old days.
Suarez wins a corner but he seemed to pull up short there.
Suarez wins a corner when it appeared that the ball was about to run out of play.
Maxi Perreira shoots well wide after the corner was headed away.
Pereira hits wide of the mark from the corner.
Suarez needs to shut it as he has had too much to say to the ref.
2-0! Forlan!
GOAL !!! 2-0 AS FORLAN SCORES HIS FIRST OF THE TOURNAMENT.
I guess he heard me complaining!!!
The double act pays dividends again - Suarez lays off to an open Forlan who leaves Villar for dead.
Is there a better front pairing than these two in world football?
Forlan scores the U's second... Univision misses it live
Diego Perez chases a lost cause and wins a corner for Uruguay.
The Para defense is all over the shop now. They don't know what's hitting them!
Uruguay win another corner.
There will be two minutes of stoppage time.
Two minutes of stoppage time to come. Paraguay will be happy to get into the dressing room and try to regroup.
My apologies to Arevalo. It was his interception and lay off that created the second goal.
Forlan is now one goal shy of equaling the scoring record for Uruguay.
Suarez heads from a cross as it could have been 3-0.
Oh - that Suarez was nearly a good chance. Just nicked wide.
Uruguay deservedly lead 2-0 at halftime . It could have been more.
Oscar Tabarez will be happy as he walks off. His side are totally in control. 2-0 up and they're hugging each other coming off. Still 45 minutes to play, lads.
Chelsea defeated the Thai Select XI 4-0 earlier today. I watched a later airing at 11 AM.
Super Sunday rolls on with the Galaxy v. Moneybags Citeh starting up now on ESPN. Here are the line-ups:
Citeh - Hart, Richards, Kompany, Lescott, Clichy, Barry, Johnson, DeJong, Silva, Dzeko, Balotelli.
Galaxy - Saunders, Davies, Jordan, Franklin, Berhalter, Becks, Lopez, Stephens, Kirovski, Stephens, Jimenez, Cristman.
Apparently old Goldenballs has been stirring the media pot this week by arguing that Citeh have been "buying their way to the top." Is there anything new about that in world football?
I reckon that - if Tevez leaves - Mancini starting XI might be pretty close to the starting line-up in the Premiership. The only figure I see missing is Yaya Toure. Gael Clichy with his debut in a Citeh shirt today.
Looks like we're set for the second half from Buenos Aires as well.
I agree, BD. I don't really listen to Goldenballs.
I agree with Stuart Robson. I don't see a way back for Paraguay.
The second half is underway from Estadio Monumental.
Uruguay are 45 minutes away from their fist Copa America since 1995.
The first half kicks off from Carson , CA
Veron fouls Suarez.
The free kick from Forlan is headed away.
Looks hot in Carson.
Balo shoots straight to Sunders.
Do you agree with me that this is close to Mancini's starting XI in the Premiership?
Bloody hell - what on earth has happened to Gael Clichy there?!
Clichy has picked up a knock on his Citeh debut.
He seemed to take a blow to the head there and then he was stumbling about. Not pretty to watch.
He took an awkward fall when going for that header.
I do agree that this should be City's starting XI at the beginning of the season. You are correct, BD.
Liverpool fans will want to see Suarez off pronto. He's done his job already. The only thing he can accomplish now is pick up an injury.
Oh - unlucky for Valdez. That was a brilliant first time volley onto the bar!
Uruguay could have been 3-0 up as Suarez crossed behind Forlan then Paraguay nearly scored as Valdez saw his rocket come off the post.
Somehow Clichy is still on the pitch. I'm surprised. I think he might be concussed.
I think he took an awkward fall and I wonder if his head hit the turf. David Silva shot inches wide for Citeh.
Vera goes into the book - I think that's about six of them now.
Vera is booked for a nasty challenge on Diego Perez.
A fairly leisurely start at Carson. I'm not surprised. It looks brutally hot.
Yes ,three cards for each side.
I guess Mancini considers Jerome Boateng to be a bust.
Correct. The Copa is the more entertaining match.
Didn't Citeh sell him already?
Chelsea defeated the Thai Select XI 4-0 earlier today.
They might have. I know Bayern was interested. who will be Arsenal's starting left back?
The headline on Football 365 this morning was, "Sir Fergie Planning a Move for Joey Barton." Your thoughts?
Now there are commercials during the middle of the final. Now it is back to the match.
I hope not. he is the last player we want at OT. He would be a liability.
Not sure - maybe Kieran Gibbs?
Alvaro Pereira coming off and the Napoli striker Cavani coming on. More danger for the Para defenders, then.
Esteban Cavbani replaces Alvaro Perreira, who gets a deserved ovation from the Uruguayan fans.
Micah Richards is down clutching his knee now. This is not the warm-up that Mancini would have wanted.
Now Micah Richards is Injured as that could have been a penalty. Is this behavior necessary from the Galaxy? It's only a friendly.
Paraguay make a double substitution.
Richards hobbling off now as Balo converts the resulting penalty.
1-0!
Balo puts Citeh 1-0 up from the spot and Sunders is lecturing his defenders. Is it their fault he dove the wrong way? what is wrong with the Galaxy?
Cacares wins a corner for Paraguay.
why are the Galaxy resorting to thuggish tactics during a friendly. Is this what their fans want to see?
Suarez is flagged offside for Uruguay.
Para claim a pen but the ref says "play on."
Ceballos dove to try and win a penalty for Paraguay and was called for hand ball as he fell on the ball.
I am surprised by the Galaxy. They don't have that reputation in the MLS. A couple of half-chances there for Citeh. Tame shots.
Sebastian Eguren is on for Diego Perez. who gets a standing ovation.
Oh - somehow Para survive as Suarez and Forlan both came close to scoring.
The Galaxy seemed to have settled down . I wonder if someone said something to their officials. They cannot afford to be refused for future friendlies and lose much needed revenue.
Cristman has a chance there but basically passes it back to Joe Hart. I saw a lot of that when he was at the Revs.
Nearly 3-0 as Villar made a world class save from Forlan.
Oh - Saunders saves well from David Silva.
My link for the Copa match crashed.
I missed that - what was Mancini so exercised about on the touchline?
Yeah - I had to refresh it as well.
I missed it too. I am not sure.
I refreshed and got the commercials, but not the match.
Oh - I see it. Balotelli with a circus trick there when he was in on goal. That is extraordinary. And he's got the hook from Mancini and they've gotten into it on the sideline. WOW!
That's the problem with Mancini thinking that he can rely on Balo if Tev leaves. I just don't know. That was one of the strangest, most unprofessional things I've ever seen, the sort of thing we used to pull off in the Dosedels' backyard.
I wonder if Balo is on his way out.
Well, I don't know. Mancini was absolutely losing his mind on the sideline there. He's had his trouble with Balo over the last year but that was inexcusable.
In any case, Jamie Milner is on for him while Balo is continuing the chatter shirtless on the bench. It's like he's six years old.
I don't blame Mancini as that should have been 2-0 , but he ended up missing an open goal , now Balo is furious and it's all on camera. I think he knows that Mancini outsmarted him.
I don't blame him at all either. I would have done exactly the same thing. It looked as if they might come to blows when Balo came off.
We tried the same thing, and as you stated , Balo is shirtless and his teammates look like they're fed up with him.He threw a water bottle on the ground too.
Decent support for the Galaxy here in the Home Depot Center.
Oh - great move there but Johnson was stretching as he shot over.
Coates picks up a yellow for deliberate handball there. Eight or nine yellows now by my count. Not good for the Fair Play campaign.
I think Balo's teammates want him transferred as Coates is booked for handball, which appeared unintentional.
The waning moments in Buenos Aires. Stuart Robson was right - there was really no way back for Para. And they were unlucky with the small handful of chances that did come along. Uruguay are deserved SA champions.
Stuart Robson stated that Paraguay are down to ten men. I did not see the red card. That is the problem when you try to watch two matches at the same time.
I agree. I think this has been the easiest match of the tournament.
The fake sheikh is going to have to get the checkbook out then if he and Tevez go this summer. Dzeko still doesn't quite look the part. They need someone who is going to score 20+ goals.
Diego Godin is on for Jose Cacares
Cristman again shows by Stevie Nichol was glad to see the back of him as he fails to make a schoolboy trap.
Uruguay deal with both Paraguay corners.
GOAL! Forlan bags his second and Uruguay's third!
Brilliant counter attack there down the left through Cavani, ball over to Suarez who nodded it back to Forlan.
3-0!
GOAL !!! 3-0 URUGUAY AS FORLAN BREAKS FROM THE PARAGUAYAN CORNER AND SLOTS IT IN THE CORNER. GAME , SET, AND MATCH.
31 goals for Uruguay for Forlan - he equals the all-time record for scoring.
oNE MINUTE OF STOPPAGE TIME IN BOTH MATCHES AS URUGUAY DESERVEDLY WIN THE COPA AMERICA.
I am back for a tick... did you see the Balotelli incident... what an idiot!
Uruguay pick up the Copa America - they have the best record in the tournament now.
Citeh are 1-0 up at halftime which is best or least remembered for Balo's antics.
Welcome back, UWS. Yeah - we were just chatting about that. Incredible stuff. The kind of fooling around we used to do in the backyard but not what you'd expect on a proper football pitch. Great reactions from Mancini in yanking him off.
It is half time.. take a look
Mancini substituted him and lambasted him
Hello UWS. we did. He was a complete disgrace. He should be fined then transferred. They should not let him play the rest of the tour.
Balo also threw a bottle on the ground, took off his shirt, and was being ignored by his team. Great reaction from his fellow players in realizing that his actions were completely inappropriate.
It's Big Red in the studio with the ESPN suit.
Big Red is an idiot for blaming Mancini. I guess he doesn't think Balo is responsible for his actions.
I will watch the Copa Celebrations rather than Big Red as Paraguay players receive their Runners Up Medals for four draws and one defeat in this tournament.
Villar receives a trophy for being named best keeper.
I think Suarez is lifting the MVP Trophy.
Lexi is an idiot and half!!!
He was saying last year that the all stars should be United last year and after they got crushed... he is changing his tune
DId you see that Balotelli said that the whistle blew
The Uruguayans collect their winners' medals and dance on stage.
Diego Lugano lifts the trophy as the players dance in a sea of sky blue and white confetti. the fans go bonkers.
The players celebrate as it is dusk in Beunos Aries. They will continue celebrating as they will make the short trip across the River Plate to Montevideo.
I agree with you about Big Red. What a tosser!
Four minutes of the second half have been played minus Balo. If I were Mancini, I would ask him why I couldn't find you on the pitch when I kept on looking and looking.
