Another Day of Brasil 2014 Qualifiers
Remember this moment from the last time Ukraine and England met? Well, John Terry won't be on hand to clear them off the line this afternoon. Neither will I, as I'll be teaching. But I'll be checking the scores during my class breaks and will be on hand to blog the US v. Jamaica match tonight on FSC at 8pm. Come on, England!
60 Comments:
Bugger! I'm back at my first class break and England are 0-1 down in Ukraine just into the second half. We need two goals!
Come on, England!
Here's the starting XI for tonight:
Hart, Johnson, Jags, Lescott, Baines, Lamps, Gerrard, Milner, Cleverly, The Ox, Defoe.
Might be time to think about some of these attacking options on the bench:
Lalana, Sturridge, Welbeck, Sterling.
Not surprisingly, Montenegro are 0-5 up against San Marino, our next opponents. Wish we were playing them tonight.
Not at all happy to see that Woy has plumped for Lamps and Gerrard in the middle again. Jack Wilshire can't get healthy quickly enough for me.
I'm back home in Blue Devil HQ now. So, 1-1. I suppose given the events of the match, it seems like a point saved. And yet, given that we beat these punks a couple of months ago on their turf, I can't help but feel like it's two points dropped at home.
Here's where we stand after this week's matches in Group H:
1. Montenegro - Played 2 Pts 4 +6GD
2. England - Played 2 Pts 4 +5GD
3. Poland - Played 2 Pts 4 +2GD
4. Ukraine - Played 1 Pts 1 0GD
5. San Marino - Played 1 Pts 0 -6GD
6. Moldova - Played 2 Pts 0 -7GD
Now, it's CONCACRAP time, with the US facing Jamaica for the second time this week, this time on US soil.
We need a win, a big win tonight.
Here are the current standings in Group A:
1. Jamaica - Played 3 Pts 7 +2GD
2. Guatemala - Played 3 Pts 4 +1GD
3. USA - Played 3 Pts 4 +1GD
4. Antigua - Played 3 Pts 1 +GD
Jurgen is going bold tonight with an attacking 4-2-3-1 formation, knowing that the US need a big win tonight:
Howard, Cherundolo, Cameron, Boca, Johnson, Jones, Williams, Zusi, Dempsey, Torres, Gomez.
Tonight's match is in Columbus's brilliant Crew Stadium. I hope that Someone Said is enjoying this one live tonight.
Guatemala are 0-1 up in Antigua at half-time. It would be really useful for Antigua to pull out a draw tonight, but it's still incredibly embarrassing that the US are third in a really weak group.
Wahay! The coverage has started on ESPN2 and it's the Ian Darke show tonight.
Ian Darke alongside Double T and they seem to be at Crew Stadium. Wow - excellent coverage!
I'm never seem Graham Zusi from Sporting Kansas City before. It'll be good to have a look at him.
The teams are out on the pitch now.
Now it's a moment of silence for 9/11.
It's all on the line tonight for Jurgen and the US side. Kick off time!
We had a quick goal the other night. I'd take another one, but with a different result please.
Patient build up here from the US.
Cherundolo does well to beat his man and then his final ball is woeful.
Jamaica are clearly dropping deep and hoping to spring the speedy players like Omar Cummings.
Oh - the debutante Zusi with a lovely run shot off the bar!!!
The US are already starting to find some joy through Cherundolo and Zusi down the left side.
I want to see some better balls.
Oh - Gomez brought down that long ball out from Cameron but couldn't finish it.
Getting a bit chippy out there now. The Honduran ref has got to get a hold of this one.
Zusi is apparently a bit of a free kick specialist.
It's Gomez swinging it in and Jones couldn't steer it on goal.
On second look, Jones should have put it on target at least.
Again it's the final ball that's letting the US down, particularly on the right side.
Palmer chops down Jermaine Jones and gets a yellow.
Nice free kick swung in by Gomez but punched out by the keeper.
Oh - Cherundolo's cross shot is deflected and then saved by the keeper onto the post. Wow!
Oh - how did that not go in. Johnson had a shot deflected and then Zusi's shot is saved again by Miller.
Tremendous pressure by the US now - only 21 minutes in and it's got to be a matter of time.
Oh - another mad scramble finally landing at Zusi's toe. His shot is well over.
Torres is really just not doing it for me.
Oh - Danny Williams with a rocket against the post and out. Wow!
Oh - Gomez is flagged offside - unfair that. He was on. Shot saved anyway.
Guatemala are still 0-1 up in Antigua. Not good.
More good stuff from Zusi and he loops a long cross over to Gomez who leans on his defender.
Some handbags now as Jermaine Jones goes down in a heap.
Yes, it was an elbow thrown by Ryan Johnson at Jones.
Half-time: The US really should be two or three nil up at this point but it's still goalless.
Jamaica get us underway in the second half. A quick US goal would settle the nerves.
GOAL! There it is! Hercules Gomez with the free kick!
1-0 USA!
After all of those great saves in the first half, Miller blew that one. Should have easily tipped it around.
Omar Cummings gets US hearts a fluttering there with a near post shot. Timmy always had it covered though.
Brek Shea is coming on for the useless Jose Torres. I don't know what Shea has to do to get into the starting XI.
The US have taken their foot off the gas here when we should be pushing for a second goal.
Oh - that was dangerous. Timmy is not happy with Danny Williams there.
Mo Edu comes on for Graham Zusi who gets a pat on the back from Jurgen. Jurgen seems to be shutting up shop.
Suddenly there's no rhythm to the US play.
Goalscorer Gomez comes off to a good ovation. Jozy on in his stead.
Guyana are losing 2-3 to El Salvador at home. Mexico are 0-0 with the Ticos at home.
Five minutes left for the US to hang on to an edgy lead.
Brek Shea is causing a bit of nonsense there in the corner doing some time wasting.
Jozy won't be in Jurgen's good books there with a luxury backheel. Gave the ball away cheaply.
Into stoppage time now. Jamaica desperate to get the ball up the pitch. Great crowd noise in Columbus.
That's it - a deserved win but it was a lot harder than it needed to be. Still it's enough to put us back on top of Group A qualifying ahead of a trip to Antigua and then a final match at home to Guatemala.
