Stranger Things Have Happened in Football....
Arsenal fans won't exactly be lining up at the betting shops to put their dosh down on the Gunners this afternoon as their side go up against a very tasty Bayern side with a two goal deficit from the home leg. Yet...you never know. Tune in from 3:45 pm onward as the last English club in the Champions League tries to achieve the unimaginable.

The team news is in from Munich:
Bayern Munich: Neuer; Lahm, Dante, Van Buyten, Alaba; Martinez, Gustavo; Muller, Kroos, Robben; Mandzukic. Subs: Starke, Rafinha, Contento, Shaqiri, Tymoshchuk, Pizarro, Gomez.
Arsenal: Fabianski; Jenkinson, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs; Arteta, Ramsey; Walcott, Rosicky, Cazorla; Giroud. Subs: Mannone, Arshavin, Vermaelen, Ox, Diaby, Gervinho, Coquelin.
Referee: Pavel Kralovec (Czech Republic).
Wenger has said that his side will "go for it without being silly," but I don't really see that here. It looks like the standard Arsenal side with only Giroud as an out and out striker, Walcott running down the right and Rosicky and Cazorla as the main playmakers. Plenty of firepower on the bench with Arshavin, The Ox and Gervinho.
One match I certainly won't be watching this afternoon is the replay between Blackburn and Millwall. Their first go at it was one of the worst footballing contests I've seen this season.
Warren and Waldo are having a bit of banter about whether having several players missing will make it a better match. Wilshere and the PigClimber are the most obvious absences.
Anybody know what's going on in that Heineken advert? I'm scratching my head over that one.
Anyroad, teams are out on the pitch listening to the CL anthem bollocks.
Arsenal have to hit Bayern early if they're to have any chance at all.
Rob Hawthorn and the Neviller on the mic - loverly.
Early jitters in the Arsenal back four.
Fairly cagey so far - Arsenal really have to pick up the pace and go for it.
GOAL! Arsenal are 0-1 up!!!!!!!
What a start!
Exactly what Arsenal needed. Walcott found Giroud in the middle and he rocketed his shot into the top of the net. Game on!
So that's now 3-2 on aggregate. Two more goals needed.
Arsenal are starting to win the second balls in the midfield.
In the other CL match-up tonight, Malaga go into the home leg against Porto 0-1 down.
Unfortunately, given the time difference, I'm going to miss most of this one. I've got to run down and set up my classroom in a moment.
Good afternoon, BD. Sorry for coming in late. I've been around for the whole match and saw the goal, but had to close down the kids games because it was slowing down the computer
Some more pressure now from Bayern, winning them a first corner.
A corner from Toni Kross headed out and shot over by Dante.
To the Gooner's relief Gustavo lifts his shot over the bar.
Afternoon, MUR - how about that fast start for Arsenal. Are you hopeful?
Now Cazorla has a chance from a free kick. Lifted in toward Mert but it's too high for him.
According to soccernet the FA Cup replay between Blackburn and Millwall is tonight and it's 0-0 midway through the second half
If Arsenal score another without reply before halftime then I think they have a shout
Really - it started early? I would have thought they'd start at 7:45 GMT.
I think if it's still 0-1 Arse at the interval, they've got a chance.
I'm off to set up my class. Back in a tick. Hoping for another Arse goal before I get back.
I was also surprised there would be a replay this week because they usually wait ten days due to security reasons. They used to have replays the same week, but not any more.I guess there must be a clash with Championship fixtures in early April and the international break
Cheers BD. See you soon. Have fun.
Mueller thought he won a corner off of Kos, but I think the linesman got it right despite the protests from Mueller.
A great Bayern possession, But Martinez shot well over with a long range effort. Poor shot.
Back for a moment. Still 0-1. So far, so good, I'd say.
Yeah - the international break next week is really going to mess things up.
Flappy saves comfortably from Kroos, but how can the Gunners expect to score again if they continue to concede possession near their box.
Welcome back.Kickoff in the FA Cup quarter replay was at 7:30 PM GMT.That would explain why the replay was three days after the match because that has not been done in years.
The Neviller is clearly not an Arsenal fan.
Poor effort from ball hog, Robben,
More ball-hoggy than Defoe if that's possible.
I think you would agree with me that this was a ridiculous time for an international break.
Into the side netting by Mueller and he yells for a corner. He's about to talk himself into the book.
The dangerous Muller bursting through but can only find the side netting.
Arsenal not hanging on to the ball enough in midfield. Another foul by Arteta.
Millwall take the lead at Blackburn in the 43rd minute. That was two hours and thirteen minutes without a goal.
Dangerous ball from Theo to Giroud as with the goal, but Gioroud could not connect
Wow - talk about goal starved!
They just need to keep doing that. I think Theo is the key if Arsenal are to get anything out of this.
Danny Shittu scored the Millwall goal.
Arteta has got to be close to a yellow now.
Still the greatest name in world football.
Ramsey concedes a free kick in a dangerous position.
Absolutely on both statements , BD. Millwall lead at the half.Their last semi was in 2004 on their run to the final that year. Their only final.
Still 0-0 in the other CL match as Porto lead 1-0 on agg. I could see that going to ET
The Verminator is warming up. Not so fast, lad!
Jupp Heynkes rumored to be heading to Schalke at the end of the season as Pep will be taking over. Schalke currently have a caretaker manager.
Not sure how Pep will do in Germany. Bayern have always had a tradition of hiring their own.
I watched Schalke vs Gala yesterday. A thoroughly entertaining match. Very even and well played. Ex Schalke player, Altintop, scored an identical goal to the one Modric scored at OT. It also made the match 1-1 at the time.
Giroud was crunched there and the ref called back play.
Giroud down after Van Buyten stepped on his foot. It seemed accidental.
Snow flurries in Munchen. Not here.
Off to my class. Enjoy it, mate!
Cheers, BD. Do you want text updates?
Malaga take a 1-0 lead vs Porto and its 1-1 on agg. That tie is in the balance.
One minute of stoppage time from the Allianz Arena
Halftime and the Gunners lead 0-1 in Muenchen , but trail 2-3 on agg. They need to score twice without reply in the second half. Malaga lead Porto 1-0 at the half as it is 1-1 on agg.
The second half is underway from Ewood Park
I am shocked!
Come on you Gunners!
The second half is underway from the Allianz Arena .
COME ON YOU GUNNERS!
I am here for the second half kick off
Good afternoon, UWS.
When did the gunners score?
Hiya MUR
OH! Just wide by Robben after the Gunners coughed up possession.Corner to Bayern.
Millwall winning at Ewood?
The Gunners scored about four minutes in . Ramsey and Rosicky played Theo down the right and he put in a superb pass for Giroud to finish at the far post.
repeat of the 04 Cup Final still alive
Yes 1-0. Shittu scored just before halftime. Malaga lead Porto 1-0. It's 1-1 on agg in that Cl match
Correct, but we need to win at Stamford Bridge whenever that replay is.
I am surprised the replay is only three days after the original match. They usually do it ten days after due to security reasons, but the international break and Championship matches forced the replay to be tonight.
Arsenal's only attempt on goal was the goal.
Mnaduskic down,. Why did the Gunners kick it out of play. They are two down and need a goal. No time for sympathy over a fake injury
An ambitious long range effort from Giroud is high and wide off a cross field pass from Gibbs.
It used to be the midweek after the games until the Prem came around!
No one knows when the SB replay will be... possibly Good Friday!
Theo well offside from a through ball by Rosicky. He sure seemed well on when looking at the replay. Not close.
Is Arsenal going to do another Chelsea from last year!
Phillip Lahm booked for Bayern. It was for a foul on Carzola, but seemed harsh.
I sure hope so, but they need to score and soon!
Arsenal need to start pushing forward... they still need two more
Flappy easily saves a long range effort from Mueller.
I am off on Good Friday> Isn't that only three days after World Cup qualifiers. I thought they couldn't play until four days after. I thought it was supposed to be the weekend that the Manc Derby was scheduled.
Rosicky fouled by Gustavo just outside the box after Theo was put down the right.
Into the wall by Carzola. Horrible free kick . Was that hand ball?
PHEW!Mueller got behind the Arsenal defense, but his shot was deflected straight to Flappy.
Theo gifts possession to Robben and Rosicky is booked for a foul from behind on Robben.
OH! Just wide by Gustavo after a nice run and pass by Lahm.
Toni Kroos shoots wide from outside the box as Robben laid off the pass after initially being st up by Alaba.
Super Mario warming up for Bayern
I read that they aren't supposed to play at the same time as CL or EL games!
around 10 minutes to go in the Cup
Millwall about to ruin the Lancashire monopoly.. hope Chelsea don't do the same!
Robben with a chance... saved
WOW! Robben was put through by a superb back heel from Mueller, but Kos recovered to tackle hiom for a corner as he was about to shoot. Two blocked shot off the corner and now another
Agreed, UWS. Want United in the semis for a Manc Derby and a chance to avenge the semi defeat from two years ago.
Miles over by Toni Kroos.
Gervinho on for Ramsey and Ox on for Theo.
Interesting!
One-time Champions League winning keeper Peter Schmeichel: "If I had 30 minutes to save my season I would try a bit harder..!"
Mark Lawrenson, at Allianz Arena for BBC Radio 5 live
"I can't remember the last time Manuel Neuer made a save..."
Super Mario on for Mandzukic as one Mario that is a striker is on for another. Like for like.
Giroud booked for kicking the ball away. That is not what was meant by trying harder.
I agree with Lawrenson and Schmeichel. I understand that Bayern are dangerous on the counter , but the Gunners need to risk leaving gaps at the back as they need two in just over fifteen minutes.
Pert of Arsenal's problem is that they keep giving the ball away as Gary Neville stated.
Only 10,000 fans at Ewood!!
IT'S THE QUARTER FINAL OF THE FA CUP!!!
Back at my class break and it's still 0-1. Quite remarkable.
STRUTH.. THAT WAS ALMOST A CHANCE!
Hey Bob
Welcome back... Arsenal not creating much!
It's 1-1 in the other CL tie tonight. Tight as a tick between Malaga and Porto.
What a shame . Great work by Ox as he put Jenkinson down the right and he put in a pass to Giroud , but he slipped in front of goal.
Arsenal need a goal now if they're to have any chance of getting the three they need. Any subs yet?
Malaga have just scored to lead 2-0 vs Porto and 2-1 on agg. That match cannot go to ET
Just got an email from my friend Dick from Charlotte introducing me to another guy he just saw wearing a United shirt around work
This is what he said
Hello Dave,
Glad to meet you! I have been a Red Devil since I was born I guess. I grew up in London and my Mother is from Manchester so my entire family were United fans. I went to 3 games this past November in England. Two in London which were both against Chelsea (EPL game and Cup game) and Arsenal in Manchester. What a great week. I agree about Liverpool. Hated them with a passion back in the 70’s and 80’s when they thought they were invincible. What a bunch of idiots…they have been “Walking Alone” since. Big rematch against the Blues on April one at the Bridge…we have to win it!
I told him he should join us
He sent me a couple of pictures from OT
STRUTH.. ALMOST!!!
Oh - just wide from Gervinho. That needed to go in.
Welcome back, Bob.Just wide by Gervinho. as he played a nice one two with Carzola. That needed to go in.
Roque Santa Cruz puts Malaga up on Porto 2-0 and 2-1 on agg
Gary Lineker, Match of the Day host
"If the answer is Gervinho..."
Great story , UWS. It would be great to have Dock from Charlotte on board.
Blackburn 0-1 Millwall
Chris Taylor should wrap up this FA Cup tie but smashes his effort from 14 yards over the post. The Millwall player really should score.
Great stuff from that guy in Charlotte. If you get his email, you should send him an invite. Or I can do if you're too hopeless. ;-)
Toni Kroos off for the Ukrainian Timoshyuk.
No, my friend, Dick, is a typical Yank.. the United fan is RC
Off again for the second half of me class.
Tymoschik on for Mueller. Millwall have defeated Blackburn 1-0 at Ewood Park and will play Wigan in the semis. the first since 2004, when the y lost to United on the final.
I sent him the address
How do you send an invite
MILLWALL IN THE SEMI FINALS!!!
Cheers Bob. Have fun. I guess I should have meant RC.
I am not sure how an invite is sent. Sorry about that. Bob sent one when I joined.
Statisticians Opta: "Millwall have made the FA Cup semi-finals for the fifth time, having only made the final once in 2004."
Arsenal need to attack attack attack
Spirit of 89 at Anfield
Will anyone be around for the EL tomorrow? Three Prem teams in action. All with a good chance of advancing.
THEY'VE SCORED!!!!!!
ONE MORE GOAL NEEDED...
GGOAL header off a corner from Carziola.Kos with the goal. Neuer blocks the Arsenal players from getting the ball.He shoul;d have been booked.
Neuer was a plonker there
Match on.Three and a half minutes plus stoppage time left for Arsenal to score another
He sure was. He should have been booked.
Still plenty of time... can they do it!
It only takes a second to score a goal!
Spirit of 89 ... come on
Absolutely , UWS. I wonder what Gooner is doing as Super Mario has been booked for foul
The free kick was too high for Merte
Chance to get it in.... straight out... weak free kick there
Arteta should have done much better there!
Three minutes of stoppage time.
3 added minutes... just like the Nou Camp in 99
Now Mueller is a plonker and not booked either
Get it in the box... stop just passing
Weak cross from Carzola.
Arteta with a stupid foul on Robben by the corner flag
That should do it
Arteta blew it twice here... I hate this type of play... BORING
The final whistle has blown and Arsenal win 0-2 , but Bayern advance on away goals. A valiant effort from the Gunners
It's over... great effort from the Arse
Commiserations Gooner and well done as well
First team in 17 years, no English team in the quarters
The first time since 1996 that there won't be a Prem team in the CL quarters
Take care MUR
Talk to you tomorrow... hopefully
Malaga have defeated Porto 2-0 and advace 2-1 on agg. Three Spanish teams in the quarters
Cheers UWS. I will be around tomorrow.
Three German
condolences to Gonner as the Gunners put forth a brave effort and fell just short . Sorry Gooner.
Only two German sides. Schalke went out yesterday
Cheers lads . I enjoyed it. I will be around for the action tomorrow.
My Bad.... you're right
So, the final 8 are
Spain 3
Barca
Real
Malaga
Germany 2
Bayern
Dortmund
Italy 1
Juventus
Turkey 1
Galatas
France 1
PSG
Cheers, lads. I think that Gooner might take some satisfaction in that valiant effort. In the end, though, it's no English sides in the quarterfinals.
