The Relegation Battle Heats Up!
With a handful of matches left in the Premiership season, we really enter the relegation battle proper today. Half of the table could still conceivably be relegated this morning. Two of those teams - Reading and Southhampton kick off in a few minutes in the early kickoff. Then we get the regularly scheduled matches at 10am including Stoke v. Villa. And the day ends with two of the sides who would like to replace the likes of QPR and Wigan - table topping Cardiff against Watford. Join me for all the dogfight action.

The ESPN2 preview show has started and all eyes are on Nigel Adkins, who has gone from proverbial frying pan to fire in the last few months.
The team news out of Reading this morning:
Reading - Federici, Gunter, Kelly, Mariappa, Morrison, Karacan, Akpan, Guthrie, McAnuff, Robson-Kanu, Le Fondre
Subs: McCarthy, Harte, Pearce, Leigertwood, McCleary, Pogrebnyak, Hunt.
Southampton - Boruc, Clyne, Yoshida, Hooiveld, Shaw, Schneiderlin, Cork, S. Davis, RamÃrez, Lambert , Rodriguez
Subs: K. Davis , Fonte, Fox, Ward-Prowse, Lallana, Guly, Puncheon
Pelter target: Mike Jones (Cheshire)
This is a must win for Reading today - on 23 points from 31 matches. That's against Southhampton who are in the relatively safe situation of 34 points from 31 and in 12th place.
Good morning BD. Will Nigel be extra keen to get one over the club that sacked him a few months ago?
They're off from the Madjeski!
Nigel Adkins is really familiar with this Sotton side and should know how to get Reading to play accordingly.
And we're underway at Reading. Crucial match here.
Sean Morrison heads a Reading free kick over.
Morning, MUR - how was your week?
I agree with you. Adkins should have Soton's number today. It's a must-win.
Speaking of the managerial merry go 'round. It's Neal Redfearn who takes charge of my beloved Leeds this morning as we travel to Charlton. His second in command as caretaker manager is our old boy Richard Naylor.
I had a really busy week with STAAR testing and am glad to have the weekend off. How was your week?
I am sure Neil Redfearn is a placeholder till the end of the season.Did he ever play for Leeds? I know he played for Barnsley in their lone top flight season.
Sotton starting to get on top as a nice cross was cut out by Chris Gunther.
It was a decent cross from Steven Davis after being put through by Schneiderlin
Gaston Ramirez shoots well over from long range.
I feel your pain about the STAAR testing. I had a full day EdTPA training up in Buffalo on Thursday.
Sotton fans chanting there's only one Pochettino. I remember them protesting after Adkins was sacked. They should be more appreciative of what he did to get Sotton to the top flight.
I just checked the source - Redfearn played for a lot of clubs in his journeyman career but never for Leeds. He has been our Reserve Team coach for a couple of years though. I agree with you - it's just a temporarily position.
I am sorry to hear that. Is that training for the teacher certification test? I am sure you are pleased it is out of the way
They're right to chant the Argentinian's name - he's got them nearly to safety at this point.
I guess so. They are two wins from safety and look the more likely team to win this match.
There was a vigorous discussion on 606 this week about whether Ricky Lambert should be in the England squad. The rationale was that the leading English goalscorer in the Premiership should always have a slot in the squad as someone to come off the bench in the second half and find their way to goal instinctively.
That is Lambert over the likes of Defoe, Andy Carroll or Peter Crouch. I have to agree.
Our next round of testing is the TAKS test for juniors April 22nd-24th.Then STAAR testing May 6th-May 17th,.
Oh dear - Adam LeFondre, a hero on many occasions this season, has skied a great chance over the bar. LeFondre seems more effective as a supersub than as a starter.
Robson-Kanu goes down under the challenge of Hoivelt but the referee is having nothing to do with it. Looked a good tackle to me.
Reading piling the pressure on now. Boruc has to tip aside a great header there.
WOW!You would have bey your money on LeFondre of all Reading players to score in that position as a free kick fell nicely to him from 12 yards out and he ballooned it over then reading wanted a penalty , but it seemed a fair tackle on Hal Robson-Kanu by Scheneioderlin. Great save by Boruc from a Maraippa header off a corner. ALL Reading
The home crowd is loving this stuff now. Chris Gunther is ripping the Soton left back apart down this right side.
It was a great cross by Danny Guthrie for Mariappa as Adkins has made lots of changes to the starting lineup.
Schneiderlin was up in attack as he headed a cross from Rodriguez well over.
You can tell that Adkins is really up for this match as he is barking out lots of instructions.
I agree with you that Lambert should be in the England squad. He would be in mine.
A cross from Steven Davis leads to a corner.
Poor corner and Mariappa is down with a head injury
I noticed that there is not a late EPL match. The late match is the promotion six pointer as Evil Cardiff host Udinese West
Great cross by Jack Cork headed across the box by Rickie Lambert and headed wide by Gaston Ramirez.
GOAL!!! 0-1 SOTTON. BEAUTIFUL ONE TWO BETWEEN RODRIGUEZ AND LAMBERT AND HIT FIRST TIME BY RODRIGUEZ PAST FEDERICI
In all honesty, Sotton have been the better team and look more like the Prem team while Reading have shown why they are in the position they are.
A corner by Danny Guthrie is headed across and bicycle kicked wide.
Nearly a second for Rodriguez and Sotton as a powerful effort comes of f the corner of the bar and the post.
Federici wanted a foul on the Sotton goal, but I never saw a foul on Federici. Rodriguez got too easily behind the Sotton defense.
WOW! Gaston Ramirez missed an open goal as Rodriguez dispossessed Mariappa. His shot was well saved by Federici , then Ramirez shot he rebound wide when it was easier to score.
Morning Boys
I have been upstairs for the first half but had the match on.
Sotton deserve their lead
Two minutes of stoppage time.
Good morning UWS. I agree. They could have easily been three up by now.
Sorry to cut out on you, MUR. Had a call from a friend who's not clued into the Saturday morning soccer routine. Saw the Soton goal - a real nail in the Reading coffin.
Halftime and Sotton deservedly lead 0-1 at the Madjeski.
Half time and Southampton are almost safe
http://www.firstrow1.eu/watch/179179/1/watch-soccer-saturday.html
Morning, UWS! That's half-time and Reading are up against it and could easily be two down. Somewhat fortunate to only be 0-1.
Back after washing some dishes.
No probs , BD.I agree that Reading basically have a nail in the coffin unless there is a remarkable improvement in the second half.
Cheers, UWS. A great link.I have had some coffee. Now time for brekkies.
Couldn't agree with Le Tis more
Teams out for the second half
SS showing Benzema's high foot in the Gala game.. not even a ticking off... Nani got a red
Back for the second half kick-off - Reading will need a goal back quickly.
The second half is underway as brekkies just finished cooking.
Another Reading comeback?
The panel pick two wins for United and two draws
I'll take any of those
Grand National Day in England
Reaidng have an early corner. Morrison heads on then Sotton easily clear the corner from Hal Robson-Kanu. Hoiveldt blocks from Guthrie.
Definitely an up and at 'em approach from Reading in the start of this half - but do Reading have the quality?
Did you have a flutter, UWS?
I forgot about that. I guess it's that time of the year. Have you placed a wager. When I was a student at Feltwell I won five quid on a horse.
That was a good chance as Steven Davis got behind the Reading defense and shot right at federici
I definitely want a win vs Citeh on Monday
Hearts mounted a comeback as they were trailing Ross County 1-2 with fifteen minutes remaining and ended up winning 4-2.
not a brass farthing
Pav Pogs is warming up for Reading. He has been a major disappointment this season.
You guys didn't reply to my email about contact numbers!!!
It still looks as if Soton could hit Reading on the break for a second or third goal.
A famous quote lads?
Oops - sorry about that, UWS. I got it late last night and then I completely forgot about it. I'll do it right now while it's on me mind.
Sorry UWS. We got home really late last night and I was really knackered.I will look at it today
Jobi Macanuff wins a Reading corner that he takes and is caught by Boruc at the second attempt.
I agree Bob.However, reading deserve credit for givi9ng it a go.
Hal Robson-Kanu wins a corner off of young Luke Shaw.
a famous quote lads/?
What does this mean?
The corner is eventually cleared by7 Rodriguez.
cheers bob
There it is ,. As Bob stated, Sotton are dangerous on the break. Lambert found Rodriguez down the left and his return pass was nearly put away by Lambert
Wide by LeFondre from just outside the box after some shaky Sotton defending
Gareth MCLeary on for Danny Guthrie. Basically, like for like.
Adam Lallana is on for Gaston Ramirez. Also like for like.
What about the 606 discussion about Ricky Lambert in the England squad. Should he be included to be an "impact substitute" ahead of the likes of Defoe, Carroll, Cole and Crouch? Should the top English goalscorer in the Prem have an automatic slot in the England squad?
Sorry - that question is for UWS - MUR and I already agreed that he should be.
Definitely in the squad.... what would hurt having him available to come and score a late one
Great tackle on Rodriguesz for a Sotton corner. great passing.
cheers MUR
Shaky defnding off the corner , but it eventually makes it's way to Federici
I just emailed you my contact info, UWS.
I agree - I don't see what the inclusion of a Carlton Cole does for the England squad.
Me too, Bob.
Sotton look the Prem side while reading look the side that never left the Championship.
Having the same discussion on the Beeb's footer pageShohidur Rahman: "Heskey played for England 62 times but Lambert can't get a single cap. Right...
Ben Foley: "Dare I say that Rickie Lambert is better than Wayne Rooney this season?"
Not the most decisive keeping by Boruc as he caught a long reading cross at the second attempt.Hope he's that shaky when Poland visit Wembley
Great pints by Shohidur and Ben
TWO NIL!!
GOAL! Lalanna sticks the knife in just as I'd thought that they would. Over and out for Reading.
0-2!
GOAL!!!! GAME,SET, AND MATCH AS NOSTRABOBUS STATED. SOTTON SCORED ON A BREAK AS IT WAS A GREAT FINISH BY LALLANA OFF A NICE PASS FROM RODRIGUEZ.IT ALL STARTED IN THE BACK WITH YOSHIDA.
Great ball over the top by Rodriguez and silky finish by Lalanna. Reading fans beginning to leave now.
People are say Jay Rodriguez should play for England!
Is he English or are they talking tongue in cheek
Do we call you Nostrabobus? They scored just the way you stated they would.
Do you think Gerrard is the best Liverpool player ever?
It was just said on SS
There is NO WAY he his
How many titles has he won? I've won just as many!
What about the players in the 70s and 80s
Jobi McAnuff upset and rightly so as it took a deflection off of Jack Cork, but a goal kick was awarded.
I agree, UWS.He doesn't compare to the players from the 70 and 80s.
I have noticed that Ian Darke likes to commentate and look for controversy
Reading thought they had a goal, but the replay showed that a slight piece of the ball did not cross the line.
Ian is a typical papparazzi.
Woy must be licking his chomps at facing Boruc in goal when they take on Poland.
Nothing's going right for Reading. Looked like the ball was over the line but not called a goal. Shame - that would have livened up the match.
Liverpool haven't taken full points at West Ham since 1963????
Surely that can't be right!
Bloody Hell! Boruc looked more like a volleyball player, trying to gather that cross.Pochettino will not be pleased, but circus scouts might.
Nah - definitely a few better than Gerrard:
Ian St. John, Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush just for starters.
I didn't hear that right!
The replay showed that only part of the ball crossed the line. A great decision by the linesman
I agree, Bob.Others too.How about Ian Callaghan , Ronnie Whelan, Terry MCdermott, and Souey?
It must have been the other way around
I am sure Liverpool have won at Upton Park since 1963. They did get a right thrashing on their last visit to Upton Park.
Madjeski no longer the Reading owner? I was not aware of that.
Sotton are definitely worth their upcoming win and now are just a win from safety
Winning breeds consistency. A great statement for Grand National Day?
West Ham's only post-war top-flight win at Liverpool was a 2-1 victory in September 1963.
What is this Kentucky Derby that Ian speaketh of? I hear Newmarket is a more prestigious race!
Who owns Reading now? Maybe that's part of the problem this season.
Now I get it. The early match tomorrow is at Anfield. The Hammers last win at Anfield was when my parents were newlyweds.Back when Shanks was in charge.
They are newly promoted, but just lacked the quality to stay up. Nigel was brought in with an eye for next season, sot at is when we will really see how good the new ownership is.
I hear there is a minor horse race at Belmont?
Never a foul by Morrison on Steven Davis.
Now Do Prado is on for Steven Davis.
A long Reading throw is headed on By Noel Hunt and straight to Boruc.
Three minutes of stoppage time.
Do Prado misses a sitter as it could have been 0-3 . Great pass from Lambert
Sotton getting ready to make a change , but they will probably run out of time.
Noel Hunt wins a late corner.
Surely Southampton can buy tickets for Old Trafford next season
A shot is easily blocked off the corner and Sotton easily win 0-2 at the Madjeski.
I believe so, UWS.
Le Tis loves the look at the table
Southampton top of the bottom half
Well - that's the end of a depressing day for Reading. Another home loss and surely that's it for them in the Premiership. 23 points from 32 matches now - only six matches left. They would probably need 16 points from them. I don't see it.
West Brom vs Arsenal on FSC. No footer on plus as they are showing Heinneken Cup rugger.Brighton vs Leicester is on BEIN.
I agree BD and UWS. Time for Nigel and reading to get ready for next season.Le Tiss must be delighted as this is Sotton's best season in about a decade.
I have the ITV link running.Cheers to UWS for supplying that info.
The favorite for the National is being ridden by a woman. Could there be a first time winner for the ladies
I am off for a walk
I have SS about to start on my iPhone!
Cheers, UWS. Could be a historical day
They're off from the Hawthorns.
The 3pm GMT kickoffs are starting up now. Come on, you Whites!
Watching the match from the Hawthorns - listening to SS.
Now theyr'e underway from the AMEX
The Foxes win an early corner.
Full schedule in the Championship - the highlight thought is later. Cardiff v. Watford - first v. third.
An early Leicester booking too.
Naughty by Yacoub for west Brom and similar by Gus's lads.
Will you be aorund for the late match in the Welsh capital
Bad for Pompey at all levels as their youth team loses 6-1 to the Fake Dons Youth team
A check on the team news out of the Valley:
Charlton: Hamer, Hughes, Jackson, Morrison, Pritchard, Wiggins, Kermorgant, Fuller, Solly, Harriott, Dervite-Vaussoue. Subs. Button, Taylor, Stephens, Kerkar, Gower, Wilson, Obika.
Leeds: Kenny, Byram, Peltier, Pearce, Warnock, Green, Tonge, Norris, White, Morison, McCormack Subs. Ashdown, Austin, Brown, Poleon, Diouf, Varney, Habibou.
Referee: S Atwell
Notts County take a surprise lead at Bournemouth
I've got to go up to Buffalo for the late one to support a friend who's reading in a Book Fair around 2pm.
Bolton take the lead vs wolves.
Have a great trip
Evil Neil has resisted using Morison and McCormack together but Saintly Neil has started them straight away. What a difference a week makes!
I am also watching Brighton vs the Foxes on BEIN. I guess you would want a draw from that
Wolves had a miraculous win in midweek but a loss again today at Bolton would put them right back in it.
well done by the Nice Neil!
I suppose so, MUR. I'm afraid I have to keep an eye on the bottom of the table as well, as Huddersfield in 22nd place have 48 points and we only have 52 before the kickoff.
I think 54 points are needed to stay up in the Championship this year
Agbon gives Villa t eh lead at the Britttania
Gabby Ag has scored a priceless goal for Villa away to Stoke. I'd love to see the Potters dragged back into the dogfight. A win for the Villans today would lift them above Wigan and out of the relegation spots.
Good point , Bob. I think a win at the Valley would ensure safety.
If that's right, a win today would make us safe. Come on!
Michu has it in the net but it's whistled off for a foul earlier in the move.
According top Merse, A perfectly goo goal by Michu was disallowed vs out of form Norwich
Kos concedes a corner to the Baggies.
OH! Headed off the line from a Baggies corner. It looked like Rosciky. Then Flappy misses a cross , but gets away with it.
Bolton lead Wolves 2-0. Bob will be pleased.
Gus is forced into an early change as the injured Buckley is replaced by one of the LUA Lua brorhers
I don't know - I worry about clubs that have a precipitous fall from grace. Wolves as a club could be in real trouble. Like Coventry - apparently they narrowly avoided a 15 point deduction for the start of the next season in L1.
Now I am delighted - Not a big club have conceded a goal at home to Blackburn. They're now well mired in the relegation muck on 47 points.
Celtic take the lead vs Hibs with Someone in attendance A Celtic and Motherwell loss will clich the title for the Hoops.
It was Jordan Rhodes. I thought you would be pleased.
I meant that you would be pleased in terms of Wolves and how that would affect Leeds in the relegation mix. Good point about big clubs falling
Jeff said that Hartlepool have gone 720 minutes without a goal and Jeff is unhappy with the two Daves going out on loan? How could we do any worse?
Luton trail 2-0 at Gateshead. hat illustrates your example of a club;s fall from grace.
The Foxes had a chance to take the lead as Andy King shot wide.
GOAL! Rosicky gets the opener for the Arse at the Hawthorns!
GOAL!!!! 0-1 GUNNERS AS ROSICKY DIVERTS ACROSS WITH HIS HEAD FROM GERVINHO.
It started with a long diagonal from Arteta to Gervinho. He worked his way in for a cross shot that Rosicky deftly headed home.
0-1 Arsenal.
It all started when the Gunners won the ball in midfield from a goal kick by Ben Foster. Great long ball from Kos to Gervinho and his cross was deflected into the goal by Rosicky.
Not a Big Club tie it up vs Blackburn. Bob will not be pleased . Both clubs in the relegation mix.
Bugger - Not a Big Club have equalized.
Not pleased at all - it lifts them out of the dropzone.
Clumsy foul by Rosicky and the Baggies have a free kick
The Baggies have a free kick chance now - Brunt over it....
Straight under the ball but Mannone collects.
The free kick is saved at the near post by Flappy as he actually held on.Decent free kick by Chris Brunt.
Aaron Ramsey booked for a clumsy foul
Brum have a legit goal vs Millwall disallowed.
Ben Foster blocks a cross from Gervinho with his feet
Villa nearly go two up at the Brittania as Weimann has a shot come off the post.
Blackpool take the lead at Forest. Bob will not be pleased.
