The Beginning of a New Era
Some people are up all night to get lucky but I'm up with the bleedin' chickens this morning to greet the beginning of a new era for footie watching in the USA. NBC Sports begin a three-year relationship with the Beautiful Game and Fox Soccer Channel - our home for the past decade - is no more. Join me for the beginning of what promises to be a fascinating season of a wide-open Premiership this morning.

Our first look at a new era is a distinctly old one - the usual Premiership-produced preview package show that can be seen the world over by viewers of channels that buy the Premiership rights.
Right now, the Preview show has ended and something called "The Premier League Match Pack" has started. It appears to be another packaged Premiership show with a focus on the statistics surrounding the game.
That's odd - Fox Soccer Channel appears to still be on the air, showing their tedious "Being Liverpool" series in re-runs all day. No sign of their new comedy network "FXX" or of "Fox Sports 1" on my system. Instead, I see a listing for a "Fox Sports 2," which is currently showing UFC Fighting.
I've got a link up for the Leeds v. Not a Big Club clash at Elland Road here: http://firstrowus1.eu/watch/201555/1/watch-leeds-united-vs-sheffield-wednesday.html
The "Match Pack" show is winding down. Now we should see what this new NBC Sports coverage really has in store.
Morning Bob
Here we go!
Here we go....no, it's more pre-packaged stuff on NBC Sports. Wonder when the live stuff will kick in?
Decent opening by NBC
Morning, UWS - I've been up an hour sampling the new coverage. Here it is - the first live taste of the new coverage.
Shots of the grounds way before kick off
Great shot of Anfield
Those shows you were shown before.
I'm liking it already - a look around the grounds and now the players coming in to Anfield. Reminds me of Cup Final coverage back in the day.
I see all those other matches are on NBC Live Extra
That is on the link I sent you last night
Great Sky Sports coverage from an expectant Elland Road where I'm hoping we can hand Not a Big Club their third successive loss this season.
Yeah - I see that. I'm getting the United match on my NBC affiliate - are you?
So, who are the goal scorers we are looking for here
I have Mark Walters! I hope he's playing!
Morning all. I'm at work and will try to follow along here and on the BBC text. I'd watch the NBClive app, but my cable company blows and does not allow it.
Jonathan Walters.. not Mark... HE'S PLAYING!!!
And 'Mon the Hoops!
Yes,
NBC Sports for the first two games
NBC for the big one
Morning SS
BTW, I think the change of the Fox channels starts at 4pm or something
A beginning of a new era on NBC
An end of an era at Via Lino
We still haven't sold the house but we are going to make the move to Sandalwood midweek next week to be in before school starts. So, this is my last Saturday in this house!
Of course, this is the first Prem game in THE COTTAGE
Great question -
Goalscorers - Daniel Sturridge (Blue Devil, MUR, Matt, Sporting, Someone, and Yellows); Diego Costa (Chelskilad), Olivier Giroud (Gooner), Steven Gerrard (Red Devil), Coutinho (Red Dragon, Simon), Jonathan Walters (UWS), Peter Crouch (WHR).
We should have had a prediction for the first time goal line technology will be used
Morning, Someone. Hope you're enjoying the craic of a new season starting up.
LINE-UPS - Liverpool v Stoke (1245 BST)
Liverpool: Mignolet, Johnson, Toure, Agger, Jose Enrique, Gerrard, Lucas, Henderson, Aspas, Sturridge, Coutinho. Subs: Brad Jones, Alberto, Allen, Borini, Sterling, Wisdom, Ibe.
Stoke: Begovic, Cameron, Shawcross, Huth, Pieters, Whelan, Nzonzi, Palacios, Walters, Crouch, Etherington. Subs: Muniesa, Pennant, Jones, Wilson, Adam, Sorensen, Jerome.
Referee: Martin Atkinson (W Yorkshire)
MOT!
The Leeds XI - Kenny, Peltier, Lees, Pearce, Warnock, Green, Austin, Murphy, McCormack, Poleon, Varney.
Good morning BD and UWS. Got a strong pot of coffee brewing , but still warm enough for the AC to be running
Looking for a link as the match won't be televised until this afternoon. BEIN showing an infomercial. BOO! They are not a Big Channel.
We're away at Elland Road then. Stephen Warnock is lucky to avoid an early yellow card.
Morning, MUR - chilly morning in WNY here. Have the coffee going.
So Sturridge, Coutinho, Gerrard, Walters and Crouchie all in the starting line-ups. Should be interesting.
Can you send some of that cool air our way . I probably won't see any till I come up to WNY.
In terms of first red card players, we've got:
Ryan Shawcross (Blue Devil, Simon); Andrew Taylor (Chelskilad, Sporting), Danny Gabbidon (Gooner), Georgios Karagounis (MUR), Chico Flores (Matt); Steven Gerrard (Red Devil); James Collins (Red Dragon); Ahmed El-mohamedy (Someone); Steve Sidwell (Swansong, Yellows); Paul McShane (UWS); Ron Vlaar (WHR).
An early corner for the Leeds boys - whistled off by the ref for some pushing.
So where is the LOB Shield on this first day of your defense, MUR?
Got the link . It's ten minutes in and still 0-0. A tasty Yorkshire Derby.
The shield is currently in front of me, right behind the computer screen.
Morning MUR
Chilly in Eastern NY as well
Oh - Poleon was nearly onto that long ball. He does cause panic in defenses.
It's Black vs White , just like Spy vs Spy in Mad Magazine!
Just don't let Sparky pee on it, eh? ;-)
Raaaather tasty.....
Send some of that cool air to South Texas please! It was 100 yesterday and has been almost every day for the past four weeks! Send it and send it quickly.
I was listening to Talksport coming home from taking Tom to Cortland.
They said rain was coming in... it's pouring at Anfield!
Too high for Sparky , but within Fred's reach. So far, he has been a well behaved cat about it.
WHy would Mark Hughes want to pee on it!!!!!
Poleon with another great run but he just overran it as he got into the area.
Glad to hear it!
We just saw it on NBC Sports. Looks like a cold , rainy day on Merseyside. That needs to shipped to South Texas.
Richard Keyes and Andy Gray have a show on Friday nights on TalkSport... they are in Doha... working for Al J.
How was that a foul by Poleon on Giles Coke. This ref is picky considering it's a derby.
Sparky is our dog, but the shield is out of his reach and he wouldn't pee on it because he is a good boy.
More great work from Poleon and he went down under a challenge. Ref calls it a corner.
I have the Yorkshire derby link going
Come on Leeds
Don't like a lot of those empty seats there
Nice strong run by Polleon poses problems for the Not a Big Club defense and leads to a corner. Head tennis in the box off the corner and it runs harmlessly to Chris Kirkland.
Not surprised that Andy and Old Hairy Hands have ended up in the Emirates. They're not so keen on women over there.
My comment on Andy Gray and Richard Keyes is that they are jerks and that is the only place where they can get a show. Great update.
I hope NBC go to the ground early
Sounds like they're going early
Sounds like they're going for You'll Never Walk Alone
I like it!
We almost there to find out what commentators they are going to use
Like the group for the pregame show. Rebecca Lowe needs to work on the helmet hair. Otherwise heads and shoulders above the FSC numpties.
Oh - great block by Paddy Kenny there. Near thing.
I figure that Sparky was the dog but I thought a joke including the Stoke manager was apt!
Maguire booked for a foul on Stephen Warnock. Harsh and another picky decision.
First yellow for a Wednesday card
Don't think it was worth a card. It was just a foul
Soccer Saturday is on already. I amy have that on soon
They're in the tunnel at Anfield. I like it
No American voices, I notice. It's Rebecca Lowe, who I like (helmet hair or not) as host, with an all-English panel.
An all-English cast, including the reporters on the sidelines. I'm not sure of that as a strategy. I thought that FSC had done a nice job integrating the two, with a panel of Warren Barton and Eric Wynalda, etc.
If you have so many windows open then why own a Mac?
Good coverage of the tunnel walk, teams coming out. I like that a lot. No ads interrupting so far.
Is it a famous tunnel? Did it used to be really skinny with stairs where they touched a THIS IS ANFIELD sign
So far so goo.... countdown to kick off in the bottom corner
I prefer the NBC panel and other than the helmet hair I am pleased with the panel's form.
Here's YNWA
Decent effort from Farmer - but Kenny had his angles right.
Ariel coverage as well
Stoke fans trying to ruin it!
They seem to be getting the pre-match atmosphere thing right on NBC.
I enjoyed the tunnel coverage and what would it be without it being a cold , rainy start to the season on Merseyside? Greta showing of "I'll Never Walk Alone."
WELL DONE NBC!
Still not as impressive as the old Kop standing and singing
if FSC were a Monty Python character it would be the dead parrot. Your thoughts?
Marvelous - Liverpool getting ready to kick off.
Brilliant... no commercials
NORMAL COMMENTATORS!!
The Prem season is underway from Anfield.
It has ceased to be....
Lucas concedes the first foul of the season.
This parrot is no longer!
NBC seem to be just copying the Sky coverage - and why not? It works. I always wondered why Fox didn't go with its English assets.
FSC have curled up their tootsies but THANK YOU for many years of service
Jeff Cameron concedes the second foul. I live in Cameron County.
Is anyone going to take an early lead in the PPP?
I second that UWS, but the FSC numpties will now be on FS1.
Ross Mac with a decent effort well saved by Kirkland
Oh - Ross nearly with an opener there. Murphy found him well but Kirkland kept the chip out.
Chris Kirkland did well to tip over an effort from Ross.
The corner is cleared,
I've got the stoke match on talksport, listening in for my early two points.
Varney tries a pop at goal now - easily collected by Kirkland.
Varney straight at Kirkland.
Good morning Someone!
Good morning Someone!
my man gets a mention about getting goals.... come on Walters
First signs of daylight in South Texas.
COME ON DANNY!
Liverpool win their first corner.
Oh dear... sorry mate
Nice Stoke break off the corner from Stevie G. Poor pass from Cameron County.
Stoke hits the crossbar... who was it
BUGGGGGGERRRRR! Not a Big Club take the lead at Elland Road. It's the third match this year where we've conceded the opening goal. Something to work on.
Huth with the volley... anyone pick him?
BUGGER ! NOT A BIG CLUB TAKE THE LEAD OFF THE CORNER . ANTONIO HEADED ON AND ZYETTE EASILY HEADED IN. Sorry Bob.
I did not pick Huth, but he hit the bar while Not a Big Club scored.
I wonder what Jackie CX thinks about the proceedings?
No one picked Huth - I already printed out all of the first goalscorers, mate. Go back and read them at 7:13 am.
I know that TalkSport have live commentary on Swansea v United later on and then Palace and Spurs tomorrow.
I listened to the England match on Wednesday. It wasn't blacked out. I hope the Prem games aren't
Five Live is already blacked out this morning
There are a lot of old Five Live rs on TalkSport now
Mark Saggers and Colin Murray to mention two
Sturridge!!!!!! No - it's called back for offside. Nearly two points for me and the boys.
DamN IT! Sturridge has a header from a Stevie G free kick disallowed. Fractionally offside. Picky linesman!
Darn you offside flag!!!
Feed the Daniel!
Me too, Bob.
Sturridge finds the net and Blue Devil, MUR, Matt, Sporting, Someone, and Yellow jump out of their seats
OFFSIDE... how sad, how bad, never mind
Now Liverpool hit the crossbar!!
Agreed, Someone - we were nearly in there with the two early points.
Oh - Kolo Toure off the bar with that header.
OH! Kolo Toure heads a corner from Stevie G off the bar then blasts the rebound over.
The crowd is a little muffled.. don't like that
Danny rounds Begovic. Forced out wide then his cross is headed away/
Still worried what commentator are going to be used for the NBC proper network are going to use
Agreed, UWS.
We're going to have over a 1000 comments today... no doubt about that
glad to see Sturridge didn't go down there
Rudy, Austin, TX heads a corner harmlessly wide.
Agreed. Stevie G won't let him take pens.
Danny slips in the box , but Liverpool keep possession.
Not a Big Club doing all of the attacking now. Not liking this at all.
Remember Bob... Leeds fell behind to Brighton
Two minutes of stoppage time at ER.
Good point, UWS.
Karl Antonio nearly onto a header for #2 for Not a Big Club. Blow up, ref - we need to regroup!
Mikael Antonio wins another header off a corner, but well wide.
Yeah - I'll take another 2-1 win.
Crouch flops in the box. Glad the ref used common sense.
That's half-time and we're behind again. Time for a rethink by Brian in the dressing room.
halftime and Not a big club have the lead.
MOT!
Nice pass from Stevie G to Coutinho , whose pass was deflected by Alberto straight to Begovic.
There's going to be a goal soon because I have go to the loo.... COME ON WALTERS
KNOCK IT OFF DANNY! shoot!
sHOT OVER BY cOUTINHO.
The thermometer out back is reading in the low 80s early doors. Warmer than NY?
Peter Beagrie with the halftime analysis.
Coutinho with a speculative effort that might have had The Red Dragon and Simon's hearts racing.
I forgot to list one goalscorer pick - Swansong went with Jordan Henderson.
Oh yeah - we're at 58F right now.
Lovely weather. Please that our way. The girls are going to run in the sprinklers this afternoon. Rather tropical?
Oh - Luis Enrique close to an opener and Gerrard blasts over.
Kenwyne and Pennant on the bench as Hughes is rather Pulis with the lineup.
Great block by Begovic from Enrique then Stevie G blasts over.
Were Liverpool fans singing " Nobody Expects the Spanish Inquisition?"
I"m back
Surely NBC won't start with a nil niller
Suarez shown in the stands as he still has six matches left to serve in the ban.
Chelskilad and Gooner have picked scorers not in the match
Either they thought this was going to be a nil niller or they were a couple right little plonkers and didn't know this game started early!
I sure hope not.
Not sure what their reason was.
I will be around for the Sunday and Monday matches. I return to work on Tuesday.
Brian with immediate action as Michael Tonge is on for Paul Green.
Begovic is keeping Stoke in this one. Great save again.
Henderson should have scored there... same ol same ol
Great block by Begovic by Apsas and that should have been the first goal of the season.
That's positive stuff from McDermott - I like it.
Penalty by Commons makes it 1-0, Celtic over Aberdeen late in the first half.
Dons will be playing with 10 men in the second half with Langfield seeing red.
Great tackle on Walters. Well done!
I start pre-season with Matt's varsity team on Monday but I don't go back to school until the day after Labor Day. I start the college the same day
I've had a bit of the Leeds Untied Calypso at half time just to get the blood going. Come on, you Whites!
Are you coaching Matt's Varsity team?
the second half underway from Er. Sounds like an easy win for Celtic, who have a target of 90 points for the season.
BUGGER!!!!!!!
YOU PLONKERS!!!
STURRIDGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Points on the board!!!
OH! Great save by Begovic from Danny!
WAY HAY! DANNY SCORES THE FIRST PREM LEAD OF THE SEASON. gREAT FINSH.nIOCE ASSIST FROM aSPAS.
Two points on the board in defense of the Shield. WAY HAY!
That'll be two early points for me, along with my mates MUR, Matt, Sporting, Someone, and Yellows, ta very much!
Crowd really muffled... my only complaint...well except for the two points all you just received!
Poor conduct displayed by UWS. The Red Dragon breathing fire or weezing asthmatically?
Well stated bob. Glad you are to share in our fun, UWS.
Later this morning I need Giorgious Karagounis to get "stuck in."
I am going to visit you in middle of the night and stick a bat up your nightdress
Walters with a decent effort well saved.... too late man
Great save by Mignolet from Walters. Too little too late.
STurridge wins a corner.
Then you will have to wait till November as it is too warm for a night dress this time of the year. You are still welcome to come for a visit!
Lucas with the first booking of the season.
Enrique heads out for a Stoke corner.
Even though Bob has stolen two points... I am still going to say it
IT'S LEEDS TIME!
Peltier goes to crowd but the ref waves on. And again - now it's Poleon. Ref is being very lenient on Not a Big Club.
INTO stoppage time and a minute oft hat as Shawcross had a shot cleared off the line from the corner.
Cheers, mate - I don't know how I've stolen two points. All I did was pick the main striker for the team that I expected to win the first match. You were having a laugh with Jonathan Walters, admit it.
Cameron County heads well wide off the next Stoke corner as Liverpool are one up at the half. I forgot the scorer.
Hey, he had a few chances!!!
Half time
Good job for NBC so far except for the crowd noise
Liverpool troop off at Anfield 1-0 up.
Agreed, Bob.
